Uncle Festers

The plot thickens, as we learn more about the actual perpetrator of the murder.

Still working the case, despite being on mandatory leave Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) teams with the Maitland's lawyer to bring in a specialist investigator, Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo). Gibney has savant scale memory and interpretation skills and immediately heads to Dayton to investigate the Maitland's vacation. Meanwhile, Jack Hoskins (Marc Menchaca) has an encounter in a barn.

So. I'm just starting to get a little frustrated with the pacing now. It's still wonderfully acted and I'm enjoying the show overall, but it's proving a little annoying to me when we, as the audience, appear to be so far ahead of the investigators in determining what's happening. The character of Holly Gibney appears that she might be able to make the right connections through, given her relatively open mind. And it's really impressive that the series can cast Cynthia Erivo and keep her out of the show until the third episode.

The quality across the board, behind and in front of the camera remains apparent. I could just to with a little more happening now.

Starting to gain steam.

I wasn't a fan of the first two episodes. It's been over a year since I've read the novel, but the first two episodes covered too much ground too quickly. I enjoyed it, but didn't love it as much as the book. Episode Three eased all of my fears thinking the show runners screwed up the adaptation. After seeing episode three it's clear the show is in good hands. Very excited to see how they finish out the story and where they focus their attention. Anyone who hasn't read the book needs to stick with the show. There is so much that hasn't happened yet. I'm very excited to see it all unfold again.

slow but awesome

This series is getting very intense. Ignore the reviews and rating here. This episode was simply treat. Episode gave us a feeling of presence of a monster in the depicted town and in later stages,an interesting character is introduced. Cant comment much as it wud be spoilers. Tone of this season really reminds of True detective season and i wouldve really liked if the main detective had a better story(maybe i simply want rust cohle here). I am glued to this season so wud any serios tv lover be.

New character introduction - too cheesy
dudniknoter28 January 2020
As a person who did not read the book, neither watched any trailers, the first 2 episodes for me were in fact quite impressive.

Storytelling and consistency of characters' agendas were on top.

Back this episode. I don't know, but I always cringe when they introduce such overblown pompous characters like Holly. I understand. This is an adaptation from the book. But, nevertheless, they really hit the nail with seriousness and thrill with the first 2 episodes, and now in episode 3, it feels more of cheesy horror like "IT".

Slow, but good with some agenda
FilmChamp2020 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Every show has its slow episodes to explain characters or set up a narrative. All the actors and actresses do well and I love this new Holly character. She brings more mystery to the show while bringing forth a new type of a unique character.

Now comes the eye rolls.

-The need to throw in silly things with the Holly character. Throwing in her annoyance with her last case with guys with swastikas on their heads who were nazis. White man bad...racism...I get it. -Bunch of white dudes taking Holly's seat. -White man who was only asked for help then turns into hitting on Holly and checking her out. -White man saying she's crazy or weird...gotta rip on her. ...you get the idea.

Just sick of this kind of stuff. All the above were completely unnecessary. They weren't needed to remind us that she is a black woman in this political climate trend within movies/shows. Holly is an awesome character played by an awesome actress. Period. That's all That is needed to show her strength and for her to become a favorite character.

Disjointed and confusing

and in modern shows just layer on more actors.

LOVE Holly
whatithinkis20 January 2020
Excellent episode.

This series is quite good. As others have said, as good as the first 'True Detective' and with the noir vibe.

Merging it with the 'weird' vibe is so good.

Bad casting for the psych or whatever she is. Trying way too hard and ruined the scenes she was in

New Holly is a disaster...
geraltwitcher2320 January 2020
So, HBO ruined this very good show for me. Why you need another actress for Holly?

Not much to say...

This is one of those shows where it's tough coming up with a comment of decent length and/or detail for every episode. That's particularly frustrating for me as I'd like to have decent length comments on every episode of every show I watch, but as I said, it's tough.

Anyway, this was an engaging episode as I'm sure they'll all be. If anything, I hope everything feels worth it, in the end. That's all I can come up with.

Slow burn episode.
cruise0120 January 2020
2.5 out of 5 stars.

Slow direction and script with its storytelling. Holly Gibney is introduced to help with the investigation. The actress that plays her is great with the role. This episode is boring and does not make it any better.
