Dating shows have always been a guilty pleasure. Ever since the ’60s with “The Dating Game” and “The Newlywed Game,” audiences have been hooked. But in the modern viewing era, only one franchise has stuck in viewers’ hearts.
“The Bachelor” debuted in 2002, and nearly two decades later, no other show has managed to break through. But almost 20 years after the ABC franchise premiered, romantic reality shows are again having a moment.
Now, in our shelter-at-home world, audiences have found a trio of Netflix shows: the social experiment series “The Circle”; “Love Is Blind,” viewed in more than 30 million households in its first two months; and the raunchier “Too Hot to Handle,” which challenges horny 20-somethings to refrain from engaging in sexual activity while frolicking around a sun-drenched resort in swimsuits.
“We’ve been able to carve out a realistic and reflective way of how society is,” says Brandon Riegg, who heads unscripted originals at Netflix,...

Here’s a little good news about our latest renewal update: Not a single CW series is in danger of getting cancelled. Earlier this month, the network picked up its entire lineup for the 2020-21 season.
But the remaining four broadcast nets have yet to follow The CW’s early-renewal lead, which means a dozen-plus series on ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC remain vulnerable ahead of May’s upfront announcements. The fate of a handful of struggling series have already been decided (R.I.P., NBC’s Bluff City Law and Sunnyside), while several others are all but certain to relocate to...

Stumptown is trending downwards.
The Cobie Smulders-led ABC drama slumpd to series lows Wednesday night.
Stumptown Season 1 Episode 11 had just 2.5 million total viewers and a 0.4 rating in the demo.
The good news is that ABC is no longer factoring Live+Sd results into renewal or cancellation decisions.
Live+3 is the way forward, and Stumptown remains a strong performer for the network in that metric.
For that reason, ABC will likely renew it. However, it's unclear whether the network would keep it on the fall schedule or push it to midseason.
Opening the Alphabet network's night was The Goldbergs, which had 3.6 million viewers and a 0.7 rating, coming down from its fall finale.
Modern Family (3.8 million/0.9 rating) and Single Parents (2.5 million/0.8 rating) were way down from last week's high-flying post-Jeopardy results.
The series will wrap up for good this April. Are you enjoying the final season and all of the crazy twists?...

NBC’s trifecta of “Chicago” dramas dominated the Wednesday night TV ratings in the absence of “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time.”
“Chicago Med” and “Fire” both ticked up from a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49, to a 1.2 rating this time around. The former drew 8.4 million total viewers, up almost 1 million from last week, while the latter drew 8.1 million pairs of eyeballs. “Chicago P.D.” was also up on last week at a 1.1 rating, but dropped a little in total viewership to 6.8 million.
CBS came second overall on the night behind NBC. “Undercover Boss” was even on last episode at a 0.7 rating and 4.4 million viewers, followed by “Criminal Minds” which was also steady at a 0.7 and 4.6 million viewers. In the 10 p.m. slot, “S.W.A.T.” scored a 0.6 rating and 3.6 million viewers, down from 4.8 million last week.

There was a “Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time”-shaped hole in Wednesday’s primetime block — seeing as the event series came to an end Tuesday with Ken Jennings’ victory over James Holzhauer and Brad Rutter — which allowed for NBC and its “Chicago” franchise to dominate the weeknight that was won by ABC and its “Goat” a week ago.
Returning to its regular block of programming, ABC slipped from being last Wednesday’s No. 1 broadcast network in the key adults 18-49 range to last night’s No. 3.
NBC was first in ratings with a 1.2 rating/6 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 7.8 million, according to preliminary numbers. At 8 p.m., “Chicago Med” scored a 1.2/6 and 8.4 million viewers. “Chicago Fire” at 9 earned a 1.2/6 and 8.1 million viewers. At 10, “Chicago P.D.” closed the night with a 1.1/6 and 6.8 million viewers.

It’s the end of the road of Fox’s freshman drama series Almost Family. After not getting a back order and being left off the network’s midseason schedule, the family drama is now being pulled from its Wednesday for its last two episodes, which will air on Saturday. Also headed to Saturday is Almost Family‘s lead-in, Flirty Dancing, whose last two episodes also will air on the low-trafficked Saturday night.
Originally, Almost Family, from creator/executive producer Annie Weisman and exec producer Jason Katims, was supposed to finish its 13-episode order on Wednesday, paired with Flirty Dancing, before being succeeded in the post The Masked Singer slot by Lego Masters on Feb. 15.
Almost Family aired behind The Masked Singer in the fall and followed the six-episode Flirty Dancing in January, the reality series that is bridging the two cycles of The Masked Singer.

America’s iconic trivia show Jeopardy! topped ratings in primetime for a second night in a row. The Jeopardy!: The Greatest of All Time special featuring all-star champs James Holzhauer, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter ticked down a tenth from Tuesday’s debut, but that didn’t stop it from dominating with a 2.3 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 14.82 million viewers.
Modern Family benefited the Jeopardy! lead-in and returned from the holiday break with its best rating in 16 months and biggest viewership in more than two years. Also returning was Single Parents, which also saw its best numbers. Stumptown returned steady.
NBC saw the return of the Chicago franchise, and there was a one-tenth slip in ratings across the board from the fall finales of Chicago Med, Chicago Fire (1.1 7.91M) and Chicago P.D.. The trio had high viewerships for the evening behind Jeopardy!

Part 2 of ABC’s “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time” built on the strong performance from part 1 to comfortably win the Wednesday night TV ratings race.
The quiz show, which is pitting three of the greatest contestants to have ever played against each other, drew 14.8 million total viewers, up from 14 million on Tuesday night. Its 2.3 rating among adults 18-49 was down fractionally from part 1, but still represented by far the highest rating on the night.
The “Jeopardy!” success helped lift “Modern Family” to a two-year viewership high in the 9 p.m. time slot. The comedy, which is in its final season, drew 6.4 million viewers and a 1.5 rating. Later on, “Single Parents” came in at a 0.9 and 3.4 million viewers, followed by “Stumptown” with a 0.5 and 2.7 million viewers.
NBC came second on the night behind ABC, thanks to its ever-reliable “Chicago Trifecta,” as “Med” and “Fire” both scored a 1.1, followed by “P.

Jeopardy! in primetime is working wonders for ABC.
The second part of the miniseries focusing on the greatest players of all-time delivered 14.8 million viewers and a 2.3 rating in the demo.
This was up a bit in total viewers vs. Tuesday's premiere, but off just a tenth in the demo.
Out of Jeopardy, the final season of Modern Family resumed with 6.4 million total viewers and a 1.5 rating -- the show's highest-rated and most-watched episode since September 2018.
Single Parents even benefited from the halo effect, perking up to 3.4 million viewers and a 0.9 rating, easily hitting season highs.
Unfortunately, Stumptown failed to get a boost, returning from hiatus with 2.7 million viewers and a 0.5 rating.
That series typically gets a lot of mileage in delayed viewing, so it is still looking Ok for a renewal.

In the key demo, adults 18-49, last night’s “Jeopardy: Goat” slightly declined from the previous evening’s 2.4 rating to a 2.3.
Pretty great.
You know what wasn’t great? Fox’s “Flirty Dancing,” which settled for a 0.3 rating/2 share and just 1.4 million total viewers. That, mixed with another soft “Almost Family” performance, buried Fox in fifth place, behind Spanish-language network Univision.

Fox is weighing the future of its non-scripted schedule as series including So You Think You Can Dance, Mental Samurai and First Responders Live remain on the bubble.
The network is still plotting its summer schedule, and president of Alternative and Specials Rob Wade is confident that the “right shows will come back.”
So You Think You Can Dance, which is hosted by Brit Cat Deeley, aired its 16th season in June 2019. Wade said the future of the evergreen format has not been impacted by the order for The Masked Singer spinoff The Masked Dancer or Flirty Dancing.
“The Masked Singer and Dancer feel like very different shows to the classic singing and dancing shows so there’s enough room in the schedule. Look at how many police dramas and medical there are. The Season 8 — and Thursday — premiere for Tim Allen’s “Last Man Standing” halved the demo rating the sitcom opened to last time.
To be fair to Fox, the previous season premiere marked the comedy’s highly anticipated comeback after ABC’s cancellation. It was also scheduled for the fall, not winter, which is generally the higher-rated portion of the traditional television season. But the Season 7 opener aired on a Friday, which is generally lower-rated than Thursday nights.
Finally, last night’s season premiere was one hour long, the (semi-)comparable one in September 2018 was just 30 minutes.
So it all depends on how you look at it.

Anyway, Fox won primetime in the key demo but finished second in terms of total viewers. And “Last Man Standing” still provided a decent lead-in for new series “Deputy,” which did just fine.

Fox’s dancing dating show Flirty Dancing aired its second episode Wednesday following its solid sneak-peek premiere, and it came stumbling with two left feet. The reality series hosted by Jenna Dewan dipped six tenths from its possibly NFL-inflated Sunday night debut with a 0.4 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 1.81 million viewers in its time-slot premiere.
Fox was the only network offering originals on New Year’s Day in primetime. Following Flirty Dancing was Almost Family, with the freshman drama starring Brittany Snow dipping three-tenths from its previous fresh episode December 11. Its return matches a season low.
The series continues to move ahead through January, which roughly corresponds to a 13-episode run, matching its initial order.
Repeats flooded the new year across the other broadcast networks, with the The Goldbergs topping the evening at ABC. NBC, for example, repeated its Chicago crossover episodes, and CBS went with back-to-back-to-back episodes of Evil.

Following a decent ratings debut on Sunday night, Fox’s ‘Flirty Dancing’ stumbled in the ratings on a New Year’s Day that was mostly filled with reruns.
The Jenna Dewan-hosted series, which combines dancing and dating, pulled in a 0.4 and 1.8 million viewers on its regular Wednesday time slot, down from a 1.0 in the key 18-49 demographic and 3.5 million total viewers on its premiere date, which was notably boosted by a NFL lead-in. Fox’s “Almost Family” notched a 0.3 and 1.1 million right behind the competitive dancing-dating show.
It was NBC that led the evening with a string of repeat crossover episodes of “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago Med,” and “Chicago Pd,” giving the network an average of 0.4 and 4.1 million viewers.
On ABC, which tied with NBC with a 0.4 in the key 18-49 demo overall, a repeat of “The Goldbergs” scored a 0.6 and nearly 3 million viewers, and was trailed by repeats of “Schooled,...

Making its regular time slot premiere on Wednesday, Fox’s Flirty Dancing drew just 1.8 million total viewers and a 0.4 demo rating — down sharply from Sunday’s sneak preview (which did 3.5 mil and a 1.0).
Leading out of that, Almost Family returned to 1.07 mil and a 0.3, down a full half from its previous, post-Masked Singer airing to hit and match series lows.

(Un)Happy New Year, Fox: 2020 isn’t starting out the way 2019 ended for the broadcast channel. On Wednesday, Fox dared air original episodes of “Almost Family” and the time period premiere for Jenna Dewan’s “Flirty Dancing.” Both fell very flat in Nielsen numbers, and Fox finished in fourth place despite the English-language broadcast competition airing all reruns.
NBC, ABC and Univision tied for first in primetime ratings last night, each with a 0.4 rating/2 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic. NBC was first in total viewers with an average of 4.1 million, according to preliminary numbers. ABC was third with 1.9 million viewers and Univision was fifth with 1.3 million viewers.
Of some note, NBC re-aired its “Chicago” dramas crossover last night.
CBS and Fox tied for fourth in ratings, both with a 0.3/1. CBS was second in total viewers with 2 million, Fox was fourth with 1.4 million.

Without the benefit of an NFL lead-in, the second episode of Fox's Flirty Dancing took a sizable ratings hit on Wednesday.
The unscripted series, in which singles learn half of a dance routine then meet their partner for the first time when they perform, had a decent debut on Dec. 29, when it scored a 1.0 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.46 million following Fox's NFL doubleheader. In its regular home, however, the show suffered big declines.

A showing of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” came to ABC’s rescue on Monday night, helping the Disney-owned broadcaster edge out its Big 4 competition to tie for first place in the key demo with Spanish-language network Univision during a rerun-packed primetime, according to Nielsen.
Aside from ABC’s broadcast of the Tom Holland-led 2017 Marvel/Sony film, every program shown on NBC, CBS, Fox and The CW was an encore, which is normal due to the holidays. But in last night’s battle of the reruns, CBS managed to prevail with the total-viewers victory thanks to repeats of sitcoms like “The Neighborhood.”
ABC and Univision tied for first in ratings, both with a 0.5 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary numbers. ABC got a 3 share and was third in viewers with 2.5 million. Univision had a 2 share and was fifth in viewers with 1.4 million.

An NFL dominated night saw the premiere of Fox’s “Flirty Dancing,” which posted a decent TV ratings debut.
Fox debuted the Jenna Dewan-hosted dancing-dating show on Sunday to a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49 and 3.5 million total viewers. It’s worth noting, however, that the premiere aired live across all time zones and a substantial NFL lead-in provided a handy ratings Tango partner for the show. For the time being, those figures are roughly on par with the other Fox series debuts from the 2019-2020 TV season. Reruns of “Bless The Harts” and “Family Guy” followed with a significant drop-off to a 0.4 rating and 1.3 and 1.2 million viewers respectively.
A vital “Sunday Night Football” contest between the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers drew 17.35 million viewers on NBC in the fast nationals. The California-based team won the contest 26-21, snatching the number 1 seed in the highly competitive Nfc in the process.

“Flirty Dancing” didn’t flirt with a ratings win or anything on Sunday, but Jenna Dewan’s Fox series had a pretty decent debut following football. A huge lead-in basically guaranteed that outcome.
Of course, the final Sunday of the NFL Regular Season was dominated by pigskin.
NBC was first in ratings with a 4.3 rating/19 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 16.1 million, according to preliminary numbers. Those Nielsen numbers are the averages of a 90-minute pregame show and San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks “Sunday Night Football” game

Fox was second in ratings with a 1.6/7 and in viewers with 5.8 million. An NFL overrun at 7 p.m. posted a 3.9/18 and 15.2 million viewers. At 7:30, postgame show “The Ot” landed a 3.0/13 and 11 million viewers.

Steve Kazee can't help falling in love with Jenna Dewan. Leading up to the premiere of her new show Flirty Dancing on Sunday night, the pregnant star's Tony-winning beau took to Instagram to gush over her success. And if you've noticed that the Shameless alum posts about Dewan a lot, don't worry. He's well aware of that, and he has no shame. If his Instagram caption doesn't prove that, nothing will.
