Plodding pilot
petra_ste2 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed season one and I applaud the producers for choosing the anthology format, so each new season has a fictional horror story in a different historical setting. I believe it's the right call.

The setting is interesting; instead of a 19th century arctic expedition we have Japanese-American internment camps during World War 2; instead of monsters, we have ghosts. That said, I wasn't crazy about this first episode. Production values are once again solid but I have issues with the pacing, which felt too slow, and with the writing.

You know when I started to be worried ? When a character is walking on a street in broad daylight and the ghostly force/curse attacks him with gruesome results, as bystanders watch in horrified impotence. If there are no rules or limits to what the supernatural threat can do and anything goes, far from being creepier, it becomes a recipe for tedium.

Let's hope this gets better in the next episodes.

Subtitles?
kerrie492 September 2019
So far it's pretty good. I did expect it to be a continuation of season one which was fantastic. I'm prepared to keep going with this one but feel a lot of the Japanese dialogue should be subtitled. I dont think it's just idle chitchat that we don't need to know about. Does anyone know if it is supposed to be subtitled and I just dont have my settings right??

The Terror S2 E:1 off the a surreal and creepy start . Thumbs Up.
robfollower13 August 2019
Based on what I watched tonight S2 E:1. One hell of a ghost story, continuing the first season's knack for mixing together mythology, ambiguity, genre, and striking imagery to chill the bones. And the series has GEORGE TAKEI ( Sulu ) !

Building a story!
monberger13 August 2019
Come on! The series just started give it a time to develop. Yup! For some viewers will think it has a slow development but, it's ok. Yes, Agreed it is beautiful to look at. Really great cinematography and costuming. The acting is pretty good. Can't wait to see more. Already rating this series a 9.

Can't help comparing it to Season One
mikeyboy2618 July 2020
It's started well . The scary stuff comes a bit earlier than the first season . I know it will continue to be compared to the first season. That's because the first season was brilliant. I will keep watching . ( one complaint-there is one scene in this first episode where Japanese is spoken for the whole scene . It was very frustrating as you sense that some very important material is being discussed and no subtitles. I had very little idea what was going on )

Great start of the Second Season
rynbaskets13 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I am a big fan of the first season. The fact that the first season did not get even a single nomination at the Emmy's was truly a travesty.

What the first season did very well was to create a believable Victorian British Naval world for viewers. This continues on with the second season. There have been enormous amounts of efforts in creating a believable Japanese-American society. Even the background conversations in Japanese are truly to the point and realistic. (I'm from Japan so I understand the conversation in Japanese.) It is just as in the first season of the Terror. We are transported to the time when the mystery begins to unfold.

As for the scare factor, this season is much scarier than the first season so far. I made a mistake of watching the show late at night by myself. The first scene, when a lady starts to stretch her neck in a very odd way, scared the heck out of me and I had to quit. The same kind of scare as the Japanese "Grudge " where a ghost comes down stairs extremely slowly. Creepy! I had to watch the rest of the show during a daytime.

The acting is wonderful. Intermingling Japanese and English sounds very realistic, including English spoken with heavy Japanese accent. I don't consider that as cultural appropriation because the intent was to create a realistic world, not to mock. The only thing is, and I am nitpicking now, Derek Mio's Japanese needs improvement. As a Nisei (second generation), Chester should be able to speak better Japanese than what is in the show. Sometimes I needed to rely on subtitles to understand what was spoken by Chester. But I know this is insignificant and nitpicking.

Overall I'm very excited about the second season. I hope the show will continue to keep the creepy and eerie world.

Intriguing
mf281218 August 2019
When I first read the synopsis for the new season it immediately piqued my interest. I like Japanese folklore and traditions although I'm not a believer myself at all. I loved "Ringü 0 - Birthday" which is probably the only Japanese period piece I've seen but kinda hoped this would have a little of that feel, and happily it does. This is really just a good character building episode that looks beautiful, but I'm not surprised coming from this team. If season 2 is even half as good as the first then happy days.

Disappointed
kopasamsu29 August 2019
Season 1 set the bar way too high, this is no where near the quality of season 1. it is fine but do not hype yourself and expect the same experience from season 1.

Do not invest the time in this season
BibChr3 November 2019
Season 2 has elements that lead a viewer on in hopes that it will develop and become coherent and cohesive. It does not. I wish I had simply passed it, and that's my advice to you: don't invest the time.

The lead character, while beleaguered and made the hub of the plot, is in the final analysis an unsympathetic character, fickle and shallow and unlikable and ungrateful and disloyal and foolishly impulsive. He's a bad nail to hang a series on, but hang they do.

The central supposed antagonist is also not coherent and finally nonsensical. The mythos does not hang together at all. The resolution does not satisfy, nor make up for the time invested.

I'm sure you have better things to do. Do them, instead. I wish I had.

Wow....... that was boring!!
larosaj-2666613 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A huge step down from the first so far. I like Asian horror but this was way too slow pace with fairly unengaging characters. The morose faces of most of the characters was a chore to watch and this before they know what they really face. Human and supernatural. At least there's nowhere to go but up.

Pretty Vacant
soraxtm12 August 2019
Nice cinematography, handsome actors, ok music mixed with one dimensional villains and an overly limited color palette. Cliched horror elements backed with by the numbers screechy sound effects. Pretentious and slow this is a very expensive looking but ultimately frustrating exercise in style. If the writers wrote actual characters rather than stereotypes it might have been interesting. It all just seems unpleasant, and it looks like it will continue to be depressing and annoying instead of fascinating and thought provoking like the last season. This review is based only on the first episode i might actually watch a few more.

S2 should be it's own series.
steph_8616 August 2019
There's no connection to S1 and it doesn't come close to same suspense and quality as S1.

In comparison this first episode was bad, but mainly over the let down. If it gets better throughout the season it would have far better if it was its own separate show.

Definitely a political axe to grind.
adamg-5807120 August 2019
The first two episodes have gotten off to a really slow start. This season definitely has a political agenda, all white people are basically the German Gestapo. I fear this show is going the same way of American Gods. The first season started out with promise but the 2nd season went all in on political correctness instead of substance.

Heavy handed
Leofwine_draca22 June 2022
I really struggled with this first episode of season two. Strong production values as you'd expect but no hook; the only terror is a couple of cheesy CGI spook scares. The new milieu of characters aren't very interesting and their sub-plots feel like they drag - why do I care about that pregnancy? It builds up to an obvious climax and feels heavy handed throughout. Let's hope it improves.

So slow it's painful
stufletcher-914362 February 2022
I kept waiting for something, anything that might even slightly interest me. There is no emotion in this movie... none. Nothing. Truly, don't waste your time. This is very unfortunate since the production seems to be top notch and I loved season one. This season is just not entertaining in the least.

I thought it was somehow related to season one (ie. Old ships in the artic etc) - it is NOT...
