Episode 4 is bittersweet and divisive. The ending would certainly shock some people who think Gervais has crossed some line.
Tony prepares to go out on a date that his brother in law has set up. The date turns out to be a widow whose husband committed suicide. It was the only thing he got right as he was useless at everything else.
The date gives Tony as good as she gets. After all she is played Tracy Ann Oberman, she finished off Dirty Den for good.
Tony does have tender moments. He laughs with Anne at the graveside, he apologises to his dad's nurse and even gives Sandy some advice about her journalism career.
When Tony talks to Julian the drug addict who lost his girlfriend and ended up in a similar headspace as him. Tony gives him money so Julian can buy all the drugs he wants to overdose himself.
I know some people who stopped watching further episodes of After Life. The treatment of Julian was out of bounds to them. Tony could had helped Julian to kick his addiction instead he used his death for his own catharsis. This might be true or it might be Ricky Gervais pointing out that people like Julian or in every town and city addicted to drink or drugs and who are ignored.
