A Spellbinding Experience

Here's a highly artistic and expressive music video that sells a great music in a spectacular and memorable fashion by presenting a tribute to a classic film from the Nouvelle Vague and getting some fine acting by the music group. Video in question is "To the End" by Blur, and they honor the avant-garde film "Last Year at Marienbad" by Alain Resnais, as the band's melancholic and classy sound takes over the soundtrack.

The film's idea and settings are all present in the clip and it's amazing to see, the chateau, the location (not sure if the actual since it's very similar or recreated on a set), and the intriguing and confusing love story of a couple who may or may not have encountered before in similar circumstances. Damon Albarn plays the charming man who tries to get the attention of a belle mademoiselle; Graham Coxon might be another lover of hers; and Alex James and Dave Rowntree appear here and there, and all of them wearing their elegant tuxedos, the dames are classy as well and a series of random activities and situations happens before them but it's the couple that attracts our attention.

Along with the song, like a foreign film, there are captions presenting the inner thoughts or dialogues from the characters.

Though I didn't like the original film (might get a future revisit, someday) I admired how the atmosphere and situations were recreated in this video. It's mysterious, spellbinding and romantic; and I also love the fact of Blur making tributes to cinema classics - "The Universal" and its recreation of "A Clockwork Orange" is a cinematic masterpiece in the world of music videos. And what about to "To The End"? The perfect love ballad, one of their best musical moments of all time. A must-see spectacle to the eyes and ears. 10/10.
