For an average movie = 5, For a Free HULU movie = 8
gunn-wrights4 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
PROS:
  • The movie was definitely dark and mysterious
  • More intellectual than cheap explosions and mindless gore
  • Good acting
  • Interesting concept - cloning, how far is too far?

  • Story unfolds like an union - layer by layer - each adding to the darkness
  • Mama really loved her son!

CONS:
  • Ever seen the movie, 'Groundhog Day' - well, basically the same with this. The story repeats itself over and over, with only slight variations on each reset.

  • The story may have moved a bit slower than I would have liked, I suppose they were trying to build suspense, but I didn't really feel it.

  • The ending was too predictable, I'm not looking for some mind-blowing finale, but there could have been a little effort put into it (this is my biggest hang-up)
  • Mama really loved her son! (Maybe a bit too much)

BOTTOM LINE: I'd say 50/50 on the pros v cons. Far better than most movies FREE on HULU. If you don't want to pay to rent a movie, this is worth watching.

The most unrealistic thing...
mochteam10 November 2021
About this movie is the guy just goes for a walk. Comes upon a cute and single girl that needs his help, she bakes him cookies, invites him on a date and gets him hooked up with a job? The heck? This is more of a crazy fantasy than the actual story itself.

Ok

Okay, the movie wasn't the worse thing I've ever seen when it comes to psychological thrillers. Mom nuts, son nuts, dad, I don't know what he was the movie for. A lot of holes, but if you got time, check it out.

"Have you seen the movie All That We Destroy? It's part of the Into The Dark movie series on Hulu. Oh, you haven't watched it? Good. Don't waste your time. It sucked. It sucked so hard." -Me to anyone who mentions this movie.

Intriguing but oddly paced
rivertam2624 March 2020
I struggled a bit with this entry. I think it would have worked better as a short film. That being said Chelsea Stardust (Satanic Panic) directs the proceedings well enough and gets some strong performances from her talented cast which include oddly sexy Israel Brossuard (Happy Death Day) and a very welcome Samantha Mathis. The movie centers around a scientist whose also a mother. She has managed to create clones. She uses her discovery to ressurect a girl her son brutally murdered over and over again in Hope's ofcuring his murderous appetite. The film's main problem isn't its excessive mean spirit, it's mostly the odd pacing that continually takes you out of the movie. Because of that it's hard to be completely immersed. That being said it is an intriguing film and fits perfectly in Hulu's Into the Dark horror anthology series. Because it pushes boundaries and explores new ground for better or worse. Mothers Day episode.

TV Series?
a_marie_p28 July 2022
Didn't realize this is a TV series? Or more like a series of films? Well, I'm rating the one that I watched, All That We Destroy. Great cover, decent film. I love Samantha Mathis, but her acting her was hit or miss. Mostly it hit, but some scenes she just wasn't on point, and it felt strangely amateur for somebody with her resume. I feel like I've seen this film already done once or perhaps many times, but it was still watchable. Nothing great but entertaining enough. I'm trying to watch another episode (film) in this (TV?) series, but couldn't even make it 30 minutes in, so at least this one I got through easily.

BLACK MIRROR for idiots
Railgun-6628 May 2019
I didn't think it possible, but Blumhouse's INTO THE DARK series just gets worse with every single installment - "All That We Destroy" is so bland, lifeless and dull that it's a genuine endurance test to sit through. Stilted performances abound, but the actors are done no favors by cardboard, highly-expositional dialoge. The editing seems off as well - scenes play on for too long and awkwardly. Cinematography is flat and bland, and numerous scenes are shot against nearly colorless outdoor backgrounds. Most of the storyline seems to be filler (what's up with the dumb VR convos with Frank Whaley? Were they only able to get him for a day?) Repetition is the name of the game here. Wanna see the same actress killed over and over again in the exact same way? You'll get that here. And you'll want to kill yourself long before the credits roll.

It's thematically shallow as well, never going beyongd a gradeschooler's pondering of killer instinct. And the "twist ending" only comes as a surprise if you've never seen a film or television show before. This thing is incompetent across the board, and based on the low bar set, it's doubtful that INTO THE DARK will last much longer. Hard pass.

Comparing this to Black Mirror misses the whole point.
bfp131084 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A kid smashing clones to death, created by his mother, in fits of rage hoping to find the perfect sexual partner. What could be more 2020's than this? All the actors played their parts perfectly, especially Israel. I think it was a mistake to kill Marissa but I wasn't there writing the script. A bit of a messy ending but, really, this short piece is such a wonderful mirror to the times we live in. Bravo!

A lax tone and barefaced writing dampen the value of great, dark ideas
I_Ailurophile29 October 2023
Sean Keller and Jim Agnew whipped up a screenplay with some fabulously dark ideas, and the most obvious ones - a killer effectively given license to kill again and again, a scientist creating life only for it to be destroyed - aren't even the most insidious ones. There are deeper notions on hand of freezing a person's social development at a critical nadir, of locking a person into an encouraged cycle of violence, and of generally denying a person what they need (socialization, mental healthcare, and so on), and more, including the punishment of innocence and the lack of accountability for evil. That's to say nothing of how these can be applied to real life scenarios. These are great ideas ripe for science fiction and horror storytelling. I'm just not sure that they meet their full potential in 'All that we destroy.'

Incredible works can be achieved in cinema on the strength of themes that are slowly, subtly woven into a story, and this has been true in genre cinema as much as in dramas, westerns, and so on. Sometimes those themes come to us in pictures that are quiet and nuanced, and sometimes they come to us in pictures of stark violence and brutality. There's no especial reason why this flick couldn't have met with similar success on the strength of the underlying thoughts. I think my trouble with it the specific foundations of plot development and scene writing in Keller and Agnew's screenplay, and the manner in which director Chelsea Stardust brought it to fruition. I mean to say: the film is very upfront about its bigger ideas and themes (as opposed to gradually, mindfully drawing them out), and about the entirety of the scenario; plot development feels blasé even as there is a discrete narrative with discrete progression. For the preponderance of the length, despite all the skill illustrated by those involved and all the violence, this bears far too lax a tone, and too little vitality, to provide a spark for the fuel that we plainly see laid out before us. That vibrancy does come in the last quarter of the length, but by then it seems too little too late, and the ending is also just too straightforward to really capture the imagination.

It's well made. From stunts and effects to post-production visuals; from costume design to art direction, hair, and makeup; from music and sound to cinematography and editing - there's a lot to like here. The cast give able performances. Under Stardust's direction, however, and within the fairly forthright slant of the material, there are no real secrets for the actors to hold to their chests, no underlying truths to inform their characters and their acting that are not already exposed for us. The themes and ideas could have been employed more meaningfully, and as they were employed here, it just makes the presentation come across as rather flat. I don't think this is bad; I did like it, and I'm glad I took the time to watch. I do think that it is all too lacking, broadly, and I think it comes up short and unimpressive. I look forward to seeing more from all involved; would that 'All that we destroy' had been more judicious and careful about how it exercised its potential.

Absolute Garbage
brandon_veracka7 May 2019
Stilted acting, a dragging story, plot holes, American clichés - this crapshoot has it all. When I saw the two actors were walking through the garden and talking in one of the opening scenes, I knew I was in for a rough ride. It was like they were acting for the first time; no real emotional content in their words, and with poor reaction timing to one another's lines to boot. I gave this movie a chance based on the positive review left by the only other user review here, but I was utterly disappointed, and frankly disgusted by what I saw. "All That We Destroy" very nearly encompasses all that we hate about modern film.

The entire "Into the Dark" series has been one vanilla movie after another, but this one hits a new low. It is completely devoid of the horror aspect, unlike others in the series - this is a thriller with mild gore, NOT a horror film. After 70 minutes of dragging its feet through a painfully boring parade of mediocre acting and bland scenery, "All That We Destroy" picks up just in time to finish 10 mintues later with one of those 'Look! See? We're making a point here!' type endings.

Best episode hands down
bangel332213 May 2019
The episodes of this show have all been very average but this one is genius. It took me a while to understand what was going on (I hadn't read the synopsis on here), but once it got going it was intriguing throughout. And what an amazing performance from the main actor Israel B. He blew me away, he was phenomenal. Really believable. The mother however I was not a fan of. Could have cast a better actress. Nevertheless my favourite episode. Well done.

So so bland
steveice-1784113 May 2019
Theres very little that grabs you, nothing that makes you care about the story. Every scene I was watching and hoping for something to happen but instead all I got was a bland question, answer, question, answer, next scene type of movie. The only way I got through the movie was hoping something would happen but ultimately, anything that did happen, didnt carry any weight.

Black Mirror Toys R Us version
UniqueParticle13 June 2019
Best thing about this is the one is the similarities to Black Mirror and Frank Whaley! More poor writing this time with rude people awkwardly saying things. Super weird one not as bad or good as others make it seem. Spencer (Israel Broussard) kinda made it worse as it went on!

Definitely the best episode so far
Ntara-15 May 2019
This was my favorite of all of the 'Into the Dark' series on Hulu. It reminded me of Black Mirror, how it was set in the future with crazy new technology. I really liked the sci-fi horror blend. There is a twist at the end that makes me want there to be a follow up.

The acting was incredible in this episode. There were a few moments that seemed a little bit unrealistic in terms of what a character would decide to do. Like for instance, I don't understand why Maurissa was so set on breaking into the main character's house. But to avoid any real spoilers, I just have to say there are many twists and turns in the story line that kept it interesting throughout. You will enjoy this one if you liked Black Mirror or Ex Machina. It's a little different style wise than any of the past Into the Dark episodes but I ended up preferring this. My second favorite episode was probably "Down."

characters or writing make it hard to enjoy
jayjanuarywilson20 May 2019
I don't know if it's how the characters are written or the Writing in general but this movie fell flat. There was a point in the film where I had no connection to any character & that kind of annoyed me. I feel like if I was able to make a connection with any of the characters then i would have given this movie more credit. Even the editing was kind of weird with the flashbacks so that annoyed me too.

Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers. The idea that there is a murder gene seems a little far fetched. Now our psychopathic antagonist being compelled to desire to murder girls is very much debatable . We all have thoughts which are illegal and even immoral but the vast majority seemingly dont act on these evil desires. the real question is it just an increased chance or is it a 100 correlation ? i have always considered its merely an increased chance...not a guaranty.

Awful.
brian-milligan24 May 2019
Chekhov's gun all over the place. Probably 5 or 6 examples of scenes that showed something and then never ever addressed it again. Hulu or whoever are trying to replicate " black mirror " and they are failing. Embarrassingly. It's like they took all the scripts from people laughed out of legit anthology makers offices and hulu was like "hell, we'll take it."

One of the worst episodes of this show, if not the worst, and that is saying something.

They were trying to go for this smart, Black Mirror style episode, but it just did not work. Painful to watch.

Marissa was so stupid, I was not upset at all she died..."omg that girl is missing, Spencer we need to talk about this?" So dumb. It was a good concept, sucky execution. Your son is a dead eyed psycho, stop giving him girls to kill.

Circle of Lives
thesar-218 June 2019
Wow...My two little crushes from decades past: Samantha Mathis and Frank Whaley, are all grown up and...old.

On a recent Shock Waves Podcast with the Director of this, Chelsea Stardust, I heard this was described as "Psycho" meets "We Need to Talk About Kevin." Well, they got the "Psycho" part right, but I'd say it was more the Ex Machina/Psycho episode of Black Mirror. Hell, it totally uses the same technology found in the Black Mirror series.

Anyways, this Hulu original series from that podcast host, Blumhouse ("Into the Dark,") was pretty good. Moody, interesting and well-acted, by Mathis, anyways. It was somewhat predictable - especially the ending and sometimes hollow like there was so much more here, but budget restraints and a probable time-limit for this series, halted further exploration.

Mom is definitely trying to help son be anyone but...himself. He seems to be having problems with keeping her genetic projects alive. To put it mildly. Will he crumble all her research before she can save him from him? See for your bloody self!

(That was a pun to understand if you did, in fact, see this.)

Like I said above, if you liked Psycho, Ex Machina and Black Mirror, you're probably gonna like this. It's an interesting tale, well-shot and quick at 85 minutes. Take a look at what the future may bring and try to stop.

***

Final thoughts: Just to clarify, I only had a "girl-crush" on Mathis when she starred in the quintessential coming-of-age movie of mine: 1990's Pump Up the Volume.

Loved it.
lynelle_171710 August 2019
I really hate this "black mirror for idiots" thing people are saying on here. It has a black mirror vibe but more of an early on black mirror. Definitely not the fourth season...that crap was garbage. Anyways this film is interesting from start to finish and I loved the ending. Very satisfying. Dark, odd, and scifi all things I love.
