A killer engagement
coltras3522 June 2023
When a woman is murdered, and her fiancé is the prime suspect, successful matchmaker Angie works to prove her client's innocence, much to the dismay of Kyle, the detective working the case. But he soon becomes grudgingly appreciative of her involvement, even if she can be quite interfering.

Danica is perfect for this role, and adds some bubbly energy to the proceedings, making this watchable even more. The mystery is decent, though a little convoluted. One gets a little tired keeping up with so many changes in the plot. Victor Webster comes across better than the second entry of this series, mainly because he has more scenes. He's the totally opposite to Danica's character which adds a decent dynamic.

Really liked it

I really liked it mainly because of Danica McKellar and Victor Webster. The other actors just didn't seem to fit the characters they were playing.

good start but needs to do it correct
SnoopyStyle15 August 2021
Angie Dove (Danica McKellar) is a TV host and matchmaker in Philadelphia. Paige (Cory Lee) is her TV assistant. Her dad Nick Columba (Bruce Boxleitner) is a retired cop. He has his old files to review. Angie's mother is away a lot. They're still married but just not together. When Angie's high-profile match ends with dead Emma, police detective Kyle Cooper (Victor Webster) leads the investigation. He issues an arrest warrant for Emma's partner Aaron. Cooper's mentor turns out to be her dad and worst still, she knows her match is perfect. Aaron couldn't have killed Emma.

This is a good start for this Hallmark Mystery series. I like Danica and she's a good lead for this. I hope they don't push too hard to pair her up with the cop. They have no chemistry. I know it's Hallmark but the much better pairing is with her dad. There is an easy procedural continuation if he tries to solve all his old cases and she brings her fresh eyes. Cooper could have done something very simple. Be the overprotective white knight. He doesn't want his mentor's daughter to get hurt so that's why he keeps pushing her away. I do like their competing match narrative on that couple on the street but it's too little too late.

I really appreciate why she's so invested in this first case. It speaks to her inner self worth. I do like Danica and her dorky comedic style. This has good potential as a crime procedural and I like the cast for the most part. It does need to be done correctly and I have my doubts on that.

Disappointed

Warning: Spoilers
Waited expectedly for this show because Victor Webster was in it but Danica McKellar's opening was so sickening sweet I was going to turn it off. But decided to wait to see Victor. Next the bride-to-be falls down the staircase dead: this was done in another Hallmark show. After Victor Webster's first scene I turned it off. Too silly. A lot of other Hallmark actresses could have done a better job.

This movie was perfect if you like detective movies
rebeccadrew-405538 October 2019
I watch this movie and enjoyed how the movie kept the audience guessing until the end who the killer was.i thought it was hard to figure out who the killer was right away. This movie kept the audience guessing. The character of Angie Dove was played perfectly by Danica Mckellar. The supporting cast did a good job too. Without saying who the killer is or spoiling the movie for anyone I can leave you with this if you watch this movie you won't be disappointed. I recommend this Hallmark mystery movie!

Terrible Dull and Faux

Absolute waste of time. Hallmark mystery movies have -usually- fun. This one was a total disappointment. I -strongly- do not recommend it.

A charming mystery
chenowec9 October 2019
I've become quite a fan of several of Hallmark's recent mystery series, and was looking forward to this first Matchmaker Mystery as it has two actors I really admire. Victor Webster (have the whole Continum series on DVDs) as well as Danica McKellar, a renowned mathematician who also is a talented actress and then surprised by the delightful presence of Bruce Boxleitner in the cast. I read the derogatory comments posted by some previous viewers, and I can only say, "haters gonna hate". I think some folks just like to see their negative comments in print. I liked this mystery. There were complications, twists, surprises, suspense, and humor. Of course, there is murder, skulduggery, intrigue, threats, danger, and redemption. It, after all, a Hallmark movie. I have to say, my only disappointment, there is no date listed yet for episode #2. I hope we won't have to wait very long for the next Matchmaker Mystery. Would love to see a couple a year !!!!

Not so hot
sarahbroker9 October 2019
I wanted to love this. Falls flat. Danica is great in other movies but not this. Too sweet and syrupy and her expressions are better for a romance movie. Not detective. Victor is good. Some of the other actors just don't quite jive.

Needs a rewrite
kbruffett7 October 2019
I guess I shouldn't have expected much from a movie based on a concept by Patty Stanger, but since I like Danica McKellar and Victor Webster I wanted to give it a chance. Ah, yeah, without a major overhaul I won't be making that mistake again. The writing was juvenile, the acting atrocious, and I couldn't wait for the thing to be over. I also just don't see the chemistry at all between McKellar and Webster. Now, I will say I also didnt like the first Ruby Herring Mystery and the second one of that was much better so maybe this one will have a similar situation.

Horrible
seaeagle1012 October 2019
Couldn't get thru the first 10 minutes without nauseous disbelief at how utterly horrible this movie was. And whether it was the actress (Danica McKellar with whom I am unfamiliar) herself or the writing for her character, I found this to be the most incredibly shallow and saccharin performance I've ever had the misfortune to witness. I simply couldn't bear it. Couldn't turn it off fast enough.

Very Disappointed
clreese-377548 October 2019
I generally love most if not all of the signature Hallmark mysteries but this one did not reach the bar I feel Hallmark has set for their shows. I will typically give a show a 2nd chance but will not being so with this time. Those couple of hours will be far better spent elsewhere. Thinking this is definitely not the genre for Danica Mckellar.

Bad, Bad, Bad
agambre7 October 2019
Although, I'm not a Danica fan I gave this movie a chance because of Victor Webster. After Victor's first appearance, I could not take it no more. The plot was sooooooo boring, no chemistry between the leads. I should have known at the opening of the movie where Mckellar was annoyingly sweet. You kidding me, this is a mystery movie. All the annoying winking, etc. Personally, Danica is a below mediocre actress. If this has a follow up episode, run Victor run.

Silly plot, bad acting...*spoilers ahead*
brekinridge1 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I agree with the other negative reviews, this movie was pure dreck from start to finish. As others have said, the beginning was so over-the-top syrupy sweet with horrible acting, that I almost switched channels. I decided to stay for the mystery, but I shouldn't have bothered.

The plot was weak and predictable... the murderer might as well have had a neon sign over their head, it was that obvious. The lead actress, Danica McKellar was immature in her role as a tv show host, and her over-eager puppy dog act was embarrassing to watch. I think she gave a more mature performance when she played teenage Winnie on the Wonder Years a million years ago.

I know these mysteries are supposed to be taken with a pinch of salt but some of the plot holes were an insult to the viewer. For instance, the makeup covered tissue in the wastepaper basket should have been bagged for evidence, and any decent police tech would have bypassed the passcode on the victim's cellphone in a few hours. That is basic police procedure.

As I mentioned above, the acting in general was not good, especially her tv assistant who seemed to enjoy mugging for the camera every chance she got. Some of the support cast were so awful, a block of wood would have done a better job.The only saving grace was Bruce Boxleitner and Victor Webster, who were wasted in this silly movie. They deserve better.

Dreadful wardrobe
mommad-639098 February 2020
After seeing Danica in one of the most ill-fitting dresses ever, I couldn't watch. Also, not the best actress in Hallmark's stable.

Boring
LtlHippo12 April 2020
So boring, I was hoping the main characters were going to get killed off too. Danica seems to have one expression. Sadness. She always looks like she's going to cry. This was a huge miss. I didn't care about any of the characters. Not even Webster could save this dud.

Make me a match, find me a find, catch me a catch
bkoganbing22 February 2020
Our female protagonist in the Matchmaker Mysteries is Danica McKellar who has a knack for bringing fated to be mated people together. She's got reality television show for that purpose. She's really hit it big when she matches up CEO Robin Thomas with some younger woman. Danica's big ratings score will be their wedding.

But at the engagement party the bride to be is stabbed to death and collateral damage might be Danica's show. She has to save her reputation and the show. Danica moves in on Detective Victor Webster's investigation with the help of her former detective father Bruce Boxleitner who was also Webster's training officer back in the day.

I have to say I was fooled by the identity of the perpetrator. There is an ocean full of red herring suspects in this one so chances are you will be as well.

Gave it a chance...
rossmcfarlen6 October 2020
Fluffy, glib, smug characters chirping along to the plucked (and annoying) strings on the soundtrack of this 'every day is Valentine's Day' hearts & roses whodunnit bore-fest)...how can there be any 'mystery' (or even romance!) when the leads are so pleased with themselves?

Charmless dreck.

I agree with all the 1, 2, 3 scores.

Paint by numbers script
mzmmtdzxd2 October 2023
Have watched most Hallmark cozy mysteries since 2014. This one was notably subpar for two reasons:

  • Overacting by Danica. It's like she had a pot of coffee before each scene. It was all the more noticeable in juxtaposition with the male lead detective. It was just a bit off in tone and temperament.

  • A zombie script which brought nothing new to the cozy mystery table. It was a veritable parade of cozy mystery tropes.

  • The movie tried too hard to be sentimental and philosophical. It came across as uncomfortable and very forced. Lots of unintentionally funny lines (often delivered in somber deadpan ways).
