Follows the usual recipe

With the preponderance of food related careers among our Hallmark protagonists, I suppose it was only a matter of time before we entered the world of competition Barbecue. This one was not bad due to the presence of Autumn Reeser, one of the better Hallmark Actresses. In fact, everyone did a good job in getting the most out of their lines. Otherwise, it was strictly by the Hallmark playbook, and totally predictable. Noteworthy, however, in this entry, was a nice ex-husband with whom our heroine had no conflict whatsoever. He was a good father, and even the new love interest, an excellent Marc Blucas, liked him, and visa versa.

Pretty Good
Onetrack9710 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Pretty good, a couple of problems.

Autumn is cute and likable.

I think they blew the last five minutes, seemed very jerky.

The Hallmark movie formula is getting old. They almost kiss a couple of times before the end, but are interrupted. 20 minutes before the end, there is a crisis.

The scenario where the town brings a celebrity chef in for a cooking contest in which the celebrity will compete for money against local contestants? I don't think so. You pay the celebrity to show up and hopefully draw lots of people to the events. It doesn't make sense for them to take money away from the locals in a contest.

Cute Movie

Using the old formula of Hooe Floats, instead of Smithville, it is Red Rock Texas. Fun to watch, fine acting, enjoyable to watch.

Texas BBQ Hallmark Style
mjippolito29 January 2019
Pleasant Hallmark movie with likable stars and cast set in the Texas town of Red Rock. Most Hallmark movies are shot in Canada and not on location. One issue I found was how the actors pronounced the word of the smoker, the Staubach, named after the Dallas Cowboys QB, Roger Staubach. They pronounced it Staw-buck and not Staw-bock.

Love in summer
TheLittleSongbird13 September 2022
Have liked both Autumn Reeser and Marc Blucas together in other things, and considering that they are here in roles perfect for them and ones they do very well there was no doubt that they would be at least good. Also didn't have any doubt as to whether they would gel, not just because of them having characters that play to their strengths but also that the types of characters they have that are seen a lot in Hallmark films have not been an uncommon pairing and it has gelled well.

'Season for Love' may not be a great film or one devoid of flaws, but it's very charming and light hearted and doesn't disappoint on the whole. The 2018 Summer Nights films varied ('Pearl in Paradise' being an example of a winner and 'Love on Safari' being an example of a misfire), and luckily 'Season for Love' is one of the best. It represents Reeser and Blucas very well, individually and together, and succeeds a lot more than it fails which is what matters at the end of the day.

Beginning with what is flawed with 'Season for Love', the film is imperfectly paced. It takes a while for the story to find its footing, with not much happening and the momentum isn't there at first. And then the last 10-15 minutes or so are rather rushed in structure and in what happens (unrealistically quickly).

Also did find the ending too hasty and too pat and admittedly there is never any surprise as to what happens next.

Reeser and Blucas are both immensely engaging and neither overact or underplay, always involved in the drama while looking relaxed. While they may not electrify together and the relationship itself could have had more development, they gel beautifully together with nothing feeling contrived or too muted. Also had no issue with their characters, no overblown character flaws and neither are too perfect. Same with the supporting characters, that are solidly played across the board.

It is a nice looking film, particularly the scenery. The music is not too constant or repetitive, even if there is not much that leaps out. The script flows very well, and has a nice light hearted wit and the more serious moments don't feel melodramatic. Despite imperfect pacing and being predictable, the story is still very charming and has a lot of heart, appreciated too that there were no forced conflicts and that nothing felt extraneous.

Overall, very nice film if not great. 7/10.

Season for Love
studioAT7 September 2022
You get these sense that these leads could do this sort of film in their sleep, but getting a Hallmark film right isn't easy after all.

I thought this was one of the better efforts, sticking closely to the tried and tested story formula. There were some lovely moments along the way, and a nice story is being told.

Both the leads are engaging, and seem to have good chemistry, while the storyline just about holds up too.

I thought this was enjoyable enough fun from Hallmark overall. While deviation from the standard format is needed and welcomed at times, equally you can't go wrong with the right people in the right sort of roles telling a sweet story.

Texas BBQ, Autumn Reeser and Marc Blucas highlight this Hallmark Romance.
cgvsluis4 May 2023
After loosing her job as a sous chef at a restaurant, divorcé Tyler returns to her Texas home town and her parents BBQ restaurant with her daughter Rosie for the summer. There she meets her childhood sweetheart and friend now celebrity chef Corey Turner. The two end up competing head to head in a local BBQ contest being run by their mutual childhood friend Jay...a school teacher who is running the summer camp program Rosie is attending.

These two rekindle an old flame over BBQ, summer sun, and their mutual home town. Both Tyler and Corey have big decisions to make in regards to their future careers.

If summer sun, BBQ and hometown charm is your thing, you might enjoy this hallmark romance. I love both Autumn Reeser and Marc Blucas and they added much needed warmth to this love story.

Reeser in the recipe
MickyG33323 March 2023
7.4 stars.

I've seen better films with Autumn Reeser, and although she doesn't quite bring her best to this one, it's still very good. I enjoyed the two of them going back and forth, they have a definite magnetism and compliment each other's acting styles. The passion between them was also noticeable, yet subtle, however the interrupted kisses were too cliché after seeing that formula a thousand times, it gets old really fast. The daughter is a cool actress, laid back, and sweet. She's not the usual spunky young artist that most Hallmark's showcase, she is a more relaxed and easy going young female, which is a nice change of pace.

The story itself is overdone, they are both chefs, there's a cook-off, they compete, there is a restaurant business in a bit of financial distress, they eat a lot of cake and sweets etc... The ex-husband and father character fit in on the sidelines nicely, not too obnoxious, just the right amount of supporting male without being too sketch.

"Season for Love" is nothing to get excited about, but the acting is superb, even if this particular type of storyline has been beat to death. Reeser raises any film a few notches, and it's no different here. Blucas has the usual energy on screen that you can't deny is infectious, and I feel if these two had a good script the end product of such a film would be out of the park. Unfortunately, this was a so-so story with so-so direction.

Okay...sort of bland
mhormann-3503024 March 2019
I like Autumn Reeser and Mark Blucas in other roles, but not in this movie. I didn't see much chemistry. The dialogue seemed forced and rather stilted. I didn't see any attraction or 'spark'. It was all rather bland.

Great chemistry
hantie961 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this movie. The chemistry of the entire cast (especially Marc & Autumn) was great. I liked the way they wrote the divorce, it's how every divorce should be handled. It was a fun, enjoyable movie. I'll be buying it once it's available for purchase. Until then I'll just have to watch it every chance I get.

Love both Actors but found myself Skipping Ahead
saturnslipper27 October 2021
Not sure what else was off during the shooting of this movie, but one thing that clearly needed redoing was the script. Nothing about any of the spoken lines felt genuine. No matter how talented the actor, only so much can be done with an awful script like this one.

I've seen both of the leads in other movies and know that they were not the problem. Perhaps they also suffered from bad direction? When they finally kiss, they touch lips and freeze in the most unnatural way. If I'd been directing, that shot would've had less hesitation and looked more natural.

Also, I didn't feel the slightest bit of chemistry or heat between these two during this movie, Were there spouses or kids allowed to hang around on set? With talented actors, an exquisitely beautiful location and a sweet premise, I expected to enjoy this movie a lot. Sadly, not so much.

Great happy movie - it's not easy to get a good work life balance, but this story inspires doing just that.

nice
Kirpianuscus28 August 2022
The taste of end, forced, fake , unrealistic dominates about this film. A modest one Hallmark, mixing same ingredients - from the single parent to the love from youth , forced vacantion and great opportunity, noble refused to talks , competition, small town, business of parents.

It is not bad, it is not boring but it has the bad luck to be only another Hallmark.

The effort of actors is just nice and the supporting actors are in right positions. But you feel than something just missing. Each scene seems copy from others and the main actors are just good people but nothing more.

The food as subject is not a wrong idea but except the smoker and its problems - the fire being the clue moment - nothing seems very interesting.

The poor Marc Blucas seems interpretate a teenager, the smiles, dialogues, nature of romance reminding a teen enloved by his teacher. Autumn Reeser gives his character , same for each film from Hallmark and she has right in good measure.

The opportunity to like the film - maybe the work of Shelley Thompson. And the young Lola Flanery, off course.

In short, nice , the polite term for Hallmark universe.

I am big fan of the 2 main actors, but together it is not working. It took a while to get through this movie, which surprised me. Hoping they will do another movie together and you can see more chemistry.

The Best of What Hallmark Has to Offer
annewhite-9682913 May 2021
The, well, hallmark of Hallmark movies are sweetly predictable plot lines and this one is no different. But what sets it apart is the easy, natural acting from all the principle characters (Marc Blucas in particular) and the chemistry between the two leads. I also appreciate that, despite the two leads competing against each other in a cook off, it's all just light, friendly banter. There are also no weird love triangles, no jealous exes, and no one getting jilted. It's a delightfully fluffy, feel good watch!

Barbeque and Inexplicable Divorce
rustydalek-3791131 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Tyler Dawson and her husband had a nice marriage. Then, one day, they decided to throw in the towel and just be friends. There was no scandal, no reason, no "irreconcilable differences", just a general sense of boredom. Tyler's daughter seems alright with the decision, but who knows. Her mother treats her like she's half her age, so she might not have listened to her protests. After blowing up her family, Tyler goes back to Texas and falls in love with a celebrity chef from her high school (whose cooking skills are apparently inferior to hers), and wins a big barbeque contest. The end. An empty, unimaginative, and silly way to spend an hour and a half, nothing more.

Not Filmed In Texas
yarluap18 May 2022
Every vehicle you see in this movie is a goof or error. In Texas, our vehicle registration stickers are on the inside front window on the driver's side. I have watched this movie several times. They did put some phony Texas plates on the vehicles, but no registration stickers.

@ :29, 1:06, 1:40 of the film There is a banner that says " 30th annual Red Rock BBQ Contest " hanging over the street attached to a red brick building. On this building there is a sign that reads - Port Perry Pharmacy - Remedy'sRx. So is this movie in Red Rock Texas USA or Port Perry Ontario Canada ????? I guess the director missed the Cdn Sign !!!!!

anything with Marc Blucas and Autumn Reeser - t's sure to be good
jewhitmer259 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have loved Marc Blucas since his Buffy days and Autumn since I saw her in Bramble House Christmas.

That being said, most health inspectors.would never allow a dust covered CD player in a restaurant kitchien, nothing can damage a restaurant more than to fail a health inspection. Also the entire scene with the dusty CD player was pointless, added nothing to the plot. I did wonder about the cleanliness of the restaurant however.

One last thing that bothered me, The celebrity chef was supposed to compete against the contestants for the $25,000 prize money, how is this fair. He did not have to qualify to be eligible. Not a realistic storyline.

Also, how old was Rosie, she looked like a preteen, would they had Pin the tail on the cow at her birthday party, seemed like too youngan activity for her. Just saying.

I did enjoy this movie: Marc and Autumn had chemistry and the supporting cast was great. Anything with either of these two is bound to be good.

No surprises, we all knew that Corey and Tyler would end up together.. Ok, that's a spoiler, but we all expected that.

It was a nice change from movies with vindictive ex's or preditory females trying to trap a wealthy, attractive professional chef husband.

Great film for the whole family.

My advice: Try it, you'll like it.
