A Whole Lot of Nothing!
collectorofsorts23 April 2020
I usually love movies and television series about odd occurences like this. The 1960's Last Man on Earth (movie) was great. As was the more recent television series of the same name. This movie, however, was a boring disaster. There was absolutely nothing that made it worth my time. Save your time and money. Wish I would have!

What a Waste of Time
vegicat24 April 2020
It started out with an interesting premise -- being able to spend your time in solitude with the person you love. It quickly fell apart. First of all, it was annoying AF to keep having all the flashblacks/scenes beating you over the head with just how cutesy and perfect this couple are for each other. The movie was probably stuffed with 50% filler of just the two of them laughing, laughing, laughing. Nobody laughs that much. Oh, and rolling around on the bed, again, laughing, playing rock/paper/scissors, and games. Which was weird, because this couple had zero sexual chemistry. Glad we were saved from any awkward sex scenes, since they acted more like brother/sister.

I could overlook a lot of that, but the story just went nowhere interesting. If they'd cut out half the cutesy crap and added in some scenes showing them breaking into their neighbor's house for supplies, or how they got food etc., for months, that would have at least added some interest.

It didn't help that there were huge plot holes that nobody even tried to address. Why were they so incurious? Didn't even bother turning on the TV, computer, or radio for news? But, didn't have newspaper delivery one day and that was all the proof they needed that all human life had disappeared?

It didn't even work as a comedy. I don't find it hilarious to watch tedious scenes showing how cute a couple is together and how much they laugh. Nothing funny happened. Nothing scary happened. It should have been a short film, because it ended up being a movie full of filler.

a film full of nothing
fraghera22 April 2020
When you read the story it's actually promising. I watched the last man on Earth and liked it. Anyway I decided to give a chance to this one but couldn't be able to finish it. So boring. You will lose nothing if you skip it.

Warning: Spoilers
Seriously boring. I found myself hoping one of the characters would die to bring an end to this 'drama'.

Utterly pointless

Warning: Spoilers
Okay, so the title could refer to the writer and their mind at the ending of this film, because apparently that's what they had left, and the tank just ran out.

I cannot believe this film was only about an hour and a half, because it felt like so much longer. I know the "point" was heavily metaphorical for addiction / abuse in a relationship and blah blah blah but that's what ALL these low budget indies end up being about!

So she's a "god" or the world ended, again I know it's a metaphor, but the film just...ends. It has a conclusion that, surprise surprise, is open-ended and left up to the audience. Because of course it was, the director has no courage to really "say" anything, so they say nothing.

Like this film, which ends up being about nothing in the end. The worst part? With about 15 minutes left it could have gone in a completely different direction and the end result would've been at least moderately satisfying, but in the end we just get lame melodrama.

I can pinpoint the exact moment test audiences doomed this film to the low budget streaming bin, and so can you, if you stick with this long enough.

Also, this film thinks it's being new, the "comedy that's actually a serious drama underneath", but it's not at all. See many other better films that do this genre justice.

The cast's relatives liked it
bitbucketchip11 August 2021
Ratings of 8, 9, and 10 for this film are only appropriate from reviewers who are from the past and have never seen a movie before. That said, a rating of 1 seems harsh, given how hard the crew from Starbucks on Third Street worked at making themselves a motion picture.

Most of the film is shown as flashbacks of how adorable a couple the two leads are. It gets tedious, because they aren't a credible couple. The two leads come across as nice people who couldn't be less interested in one another. A surprise ending that the pair was brother/sister or gay or priests or androids would have been no surprise. There is no chemistry here.

The plot has been done to death. The best versions explore some new aspect of the last man on earth trope. A recent European film (I can't recall the name) about a couple trapped in an empty subdivision of identical homes was a new twist on this concept. Unfortunately, this film goes the lazy route of having the couple immediately conclude they are the last people with limited evidence and effort to confirm that conclusion. It's wasn't convincing. A neighbor from the next street over knocking on the door to borrow a cup of sugar because the stores closed when the town was evacuated due to a chemical weapons disposal train crash would not have shocked.

In the end, it's a long slog. Stronger personalities, chemistry, and some mystery or thrills or excitement or just something watchable happening might have saved this film from well deserved obscurity. Ironically, the male lead reads a critic's review of his acting talent early in the film. The critic was spot on. The crew at the Starbucks on Third Street gave it a go, but they need to return to their day jobs.

Three stars for the effort.

'King Midas' Fable, lacking golden touch
refordgarry22 April 2020
Cinematic moral tale, bit like Vivarium (2020), where the Universe looks to punish vain wishes of mortals. Nice enough young couple, exploring their struggles for artistic and spiritual self-fulfillment, save the irony that they're "upper-crust" living out privileged fantasies rather than, like many, working at 7-11, and homes without a front garden. Looks again like it was an all-woman casting team picking out a very good-looking guy, but choosing a 'Big Bang Theory' for a wife.

Lame as they come
justahunch-7054931 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I did like a little of the beginning as I liked the happiness and humor of the couple and finally the premise of them becoming the last two people on earth, or at least their neighborhood, which they never leave! Imagine being the last couple on earth and not wanting to see if there are other people somewhere or see any place they want or at least take advantage of astonishing housing. They use no electronic devices to see or hear anything about why they are alone; no TV, radio, computer. They do have a phone and call one person; someone they both dislike. This is obviously a very, very, very low budget indie so it feels kind of mean to say just how awful this is. Of course the cinematography is bad, but it's Oscar worthy compared to the writing. This is so poorly written it seems bizarre that so many terribly illogical things were in the script that no one saw. The only way a poverty stricken indie can work is decent writing as that doesn't cost anything. I must say that the final scene, or lack of one, was a tad interesting, but it's hard to imagine that many will stick with this that long and trust me, it's not worth it.

I actually liked the couple very much
redlightlessness21 April 2020
They seem to be a perfect fit for each other and for a while everything is romantic.. But then nothing happens except for some solitude and tons of logical holes.

Don't bother
rushaz8 March 2024
This movie was a complete loss of 90 minutes of my life. The premise itself is an interesting, but the execution is such a failure. I seriously don't know what the filmmaker and everyone involved in this was thinking.

I'm wondering if this was a film students final project. It really fails to capture or keep your interest. The actors are bland and transparent, There's nothing that stops you from scrolling through sections hoping to find something of interest, and it's just more of the same. Ending was quasi-predictable, and left a really horrendous 'what did I just waste my life watching'?

Please don't bother with this, save yourself the time.

Stole My Heart
Karl-619-1964404 April 2019
A soulful and beautifully executed film, A Room Full of Nothing pulled me in immediately with it's wry humor, then stole my heart as the two leads explored what they needed to live a fulfilled life. Love this film!

Good, thoughtful indie
eddiec-116 October 2021
I don't agree with the user reviews that trashed this movie. Those users, I think, just don't like the genre. This is a well written, well acted, well directed, well filmed movie. Its quiet understated tone isn't going to be for everyone but it achieves what it set out to accomplish.

What if you really get what you wish for? This movie made me laugh way more than I expected and then made me think way harder than I expected.

I loved the filming the best out of this movie. It changes style as the movie goes along and gets more stressful. Really cool!

This one made me stop and think in the same way Inception did. Love the acting by Ivy Meehan and Duncan Coe!

Eerie preview of today
Tour de force, starts out as a rom-com and turns into a dark sci-fi with ominous foreshadowing of today's isolated life, even though this was filmed 2 years ago. Meehan and Coe are 99% of the film and yet, with that hefty responsibility, give measured, but real performances.

Shot in Austin and South Texas, it is a treat!

A gem
michelmarcuse5 September 2021
There's a lot to unpack here. Unfortunately I think it doesn't speak to everyone, and I think most people didn't get it. It's unfortunate, but then again, your own circumstances and life experiences will probably determine what you get out of it. It forces you to see and think about things you may not like, and that can be unsettling. For me, many of the themes strike pretty close to home.
