Expected more from the genius film maker Krthik Subbaraj. but the movie falls in usual Rajini template. We could see his age and weak body in so many scenes which some how stopping us from enjoying few scenes.its a good one time watch though. Petta has its moments.

7.5 - A definite Above avg movie

Warning: Spoilers
Petta - Energetic Rajini portrayed good. Decent watch with a dragging 2nd half and a different climax with overall good bgm.
Above avg for sure.
Lot of obvious loopholes, as long as it's not disturbing or interesting enough we shall ignore. However that's not an exact case.
Villain would have said something to jithu in climax while he slaps. anyways thats why twist was unexpected. but lot of good scenes. After padaiyapaa and chandramukhi vettaiyan... Rajini was adorable... Discussion with sasikumar to kill that guy was THE best. Loved the scene.

It's a Rajni Fan movie with a slight twist at the end. Good one time watch.

I love Rajnikant films. But somehow I feel he is kind of tangled to mass image and his usual image of style king since long time which is kind of hurting for his films. Though movie is perfectly made for Rajni fans, which reflects in first half, but somehow it didn't actually worked in second half. The end twist seems forced and purposefully made to make the film work for less film aware audience. Nawaaz was actually not needed in lot ways to be frank, and Vijay Sethupathi didn't had any role in true sense. Infact he could have been the main villain. Many characters are not used to it's fullest and sort of missed out by the end. First half I felt could have been improvised to bring character introduction to Vijay, and many others to give equal weight for the ending it was drawing. For Rajni fans it's surely awesome film, but if one see this movie as a story, it kind of falls short. And it's Rajnikanth who is upholding the whole movie in a way. Any other new actor would have suffered terrible if played this character. Not boring for sure but one time watch for fun.
Awesome

Rajnikanth, the Super Star..
cinish16 January 2019
The intensity that Rajnikanth brings to some shots is truly inspiring. For a sixty eight year old man to bring in so much energy into the screen with his intense facial expressions and even with action scenes speaks of his dedication and ability to bring in all his energies into what he is doing.
There were scenes that worked very well, while there were also scenes that reflected lack of attention. In hind sight, the scenes that did not get the care were the ones that were not focused on Rajnikanth.
That is the theme of the movie - Rajnikanth. That was the expectation as well. So there was more story line to the movie than what I had expected. Rajnikanth has been presented in various guises and he has not faltered at any point.
Anirudh has done a great job with the music for such a young artist. Some action scenes have Anirudh's music as the background - he has definitely been able to put in a lot of energy into the screen with his music.
Vijay Sethupathi has been wasted in a completely insignificant role. Karthik Subburaj seemed to have been totally lost in Rajni. It was almost painful to see Vijay Sethupathi like that on the screen having seen amazing larger than life performances of his recently in Seethakathi,Vikram Vedha etc. On a related note, Fahad Fazil not taking up the role in Manirathnam's Chikka Chivantha Vaanam as it did not appeal to him is commendable.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui has a slightly more significant role, but he also did not get the respect he deserves from the film.
Lack of heroines in the movie also made it a little difficult to get through the movie. Trisha and Simran have been cast for namesake. The plot is just an eyewash - nothing much.
Action scenes have been impressive with Rajnikanth's style and presence and also with good camera work, color, lighting etc. Rajnikanth's looks have been very impressive. He looks very fit for a man about seventy years old.
It felt good to note the name "Sanjay Nambiar" very early on in the "Thanks" credit list at the beginning of the movie as Sanjay is the one who introduced Karthik to movie making with his filmcamp.tv course.

If you haven't watched a Rajni show, now is the time. We can see that old Rajni in full form. Petta is not as good as other Karthik Subbaraj movies but he did a great job by keeping Rajni in full form without compromising the quality of the movie. Vijay Sethupathi and Nawazuddin Siddique has done an equal good job in supporting roles. Even though it is around 170 minutes, Petta keep us thrilled. Overall, Petta is an all in all Rajni show with good thrilling moments and strong cast.

This is a film that only Rajinikanth can star in. This is a film that can only be made by a Rajini fan. And if you want to completely enjoy this film you should know who Rajini is and watch from a theater packed with Rajini fans. Rajini is the personification of swag.

Outrageously ridiculous!

Warning: Spoilers
I respect Rajnikanth for the brilliant actor he was but it's time he realized that these one man army movies of self praise and stupidity needs to come to an end in this time and age. This movie is a complete cluster of stupidity, beyond a normal and sensible mind to comprehend. It's made merely for these so called fans who like to see artificial and ridiculous antics of one man going around town like a living Terminator. If you're looking for a movie with some logic, perspective and story, then don't bother wasting your time watching this fiasco.
About time Rajnikanth starts acting his age and realize that while he was an action/ style icon during his prime years, he is no longer carrying that baton in this generation cos people now look for a good reason to watch a movie. The least we would expect is something to learn from it with a valuable story to remember. The people who wrote this must be from a fairy-tale or circus cos there's nothing remotely close to reality here.
Watch if all you're looking for is a Rajnikanth movie to hop about but avoid if you wish to watch something memorable or logical!

It's a treat for fans - Fan Movie ..

Vintage Rajini from 90s seen in First half but the second half stretches and tests patience.

Incredibly tiresome. Over act by Rajnikanth. Silly action and very predictable story line. Nawaz uddin was good in some of the scene. Rest of the cast were awaful. Very boring to see Rajnikant in this dreadful movie, weak story line.

Warning: Spoilers
There are 3 points in the movie where I saw the main protagonist embrace characteristics that no mainstream hero has done in most commercial flicks.
To me, those are the only reasons this flick, otherwise a rote, by the numbers affair, stood out.
Though the main protagonist's characterization is consistent throughout (albeit 1 of the darkest shades of grey), it also has the unfortunate side-effect of highlighting his utter cruelty and callousness (watch until the very end to get this picture).
Simran, Sasikumar & Bobby Simha (Trisha as well) are completely wasted, and the so-called whistle-worthy moments only speak to the easily swayed.
Of course, I'm excluding all sequences with VSethupathy in them. He probably has the best role in this one, along with a near perfect denouement to his character, albeit a thankless one.
Though it's in keeping with the plot, all women go missing after the first half. Disappointing.
Imho, not this director's best, which has moments of entertainment (see above), decent background score, + decent production values. However, most of the action choreography sucks, as does the CGI. Miss the director who made Jigarthanda.

A throwback to the 90s genre Rajni-ims with kitchen-sink writing
nickraman-2769927 February 2019
The Rajnikanth of the 90s is back. Yes that's right. Featuring your favorite tropes, fundas, punch dialogues & all that jazz. What's missing? A better story line & casting.
To be honest, this is the first accessible (and likeable) Rajnikanth film in a looong time. Pa Ranjith's dalit politics and anti-BjP propaganda films Kabali and Kaala failed to project Rajni into the his Mullum Mallarum or even a Thalapathi like phase. Till date, I would think only Mani Ratnam has the ability to write and treat a Rajnikanth film with panache. Karthik Subbaraj comes close, but like all fanboys, he forgets to be himself. Watching his brilliance in writing/direction in Pizza and Jigarthanda and then watchng Petta with great expectations left me wondering why this indulgence? On the other hand, this is the first recent Rajni film to see Rajni lively again and not jaded like he was in last recent films. Subbaraj plants references of Rajnikanth throughout the film using SRK's Main Hoon Na (college backdrop) as the springboard.
On the other hand, I've really gotten fed up of Vijay Sethupathi. He's now entering Parthiban level of acting. Once a gimmick's been patternized (body language, dialogue delivery or his case, yelling) it enters an irritation phase. I don't understand the hype/hoopla around him. He's going through the same motions and sleep-walks his role and lacks the enthu of a villian. With Super Deluxe showing him in a drag role, god knows how much torture we the audience have to endure. He will fade quite fast at this rate.
SImran had a better role than Trisha and it's a real pity we saw less of her instead of being limited to 10 minutes and a song.
Petta is once watchable, but much like Puri Jagan's revival of the "Angry Young Man", for Amitabh Bachchan, it revitalizes the genre of 90s Rajnikanth.

This movie has the aura of the Rajini style and it's made very brilliantly to suit his style, though some scenes are lame in couple of occasions it's a decent flick. The movie had quite a twist in the end, something to look forward to.
Wish they recreate the magic of Robo or Shivaji.
Movie had all Rajini style shows with lots of immaturity

Felt like watching a movie with third rate stars, despite appealing to Rajini fans the movie felt very amatueurish.
The storyline is probably same for several hundred movies based on revenge. Only difference being it is set in a college campus. Thankfully Rajini is not a student.
Rajini's character was overtly arrogant and gloating and was irritating after a point.
Climax twist was a joke. Other good actors like Vijay Sethupathi, Sasiskumar etc have performed in muted performance not to overshadow Rajini.

If you split open Gangs of Wasseypur and stir the plot a bit in a lazy way, this is what you get. also the first half which establishes few useless characters is pretty unbearable.
I only watched this for Thalaiva, Vijay and Nawazuddin.
