Failed second series
kathrinchow12 January 2021
I actually really enjoyed the first series.. especially with the Aidan dog narrations. Unfortunately, the second series totally flopped. Sorry Amy...if you're lucky to get a third series, trying going back to your first series premise and characters.

Love
I love this show. It is witty without being pretentious ... yes, it has some irreverent humor but it is a slow build and most of the humor has relevance later on. Really enjoyed this show.

I have to believe that all the "1" reviews are from people that are only looking for episodic television and probably only watched one or two episodes of "Finding Joy" ... give it a try it is worth it.

Happy and quirky

Sweet, bubbly and dark. I enjoy these light off kilter British comedies with unusual original characters and strange setups.

That Series 2 could change so much after such a marvellous Series 1 . . . what a travesty!
SceneByScene27 May 2021
Oh dear. The gem that was Series 1 was ruined - simply destroyed - by the disaster that was Series 2.

The second series was played out like a completely different drama. The backstory of the lead character was lost, for a start. The best friend's nature/outlook was altered, & not to a believable character. The quirky little talking-dog feature - an original use of the concept - was sadly minimised. The housemate/lodger was changed & became a tarot-card-toting fool, simplistic in personality . . . Another incredible character. Where was the troubled but 'layered' housemate of the first series? Plus the friend/colleague/love interest cameraman became a babbling idiot, & unlikeable to boot.

The second series seemed as confused as the lifestyle & workplace that 'Joy' now found herself in. The drama had altered to being written like a bad romcom. Superficial characters, lacking any psychological depth. Chaotic & frankly crude in its structure - on several levels. Yes, it now reeked of poor workmanship . . . But fundamentally it felt like a completely different series!

Just 10 minutes into episode 1 of the second series, & couldn't get why I had enjoyed watching the first series so much. Maybe I hadn't, I thought. Maybe I had a false memory?! Surely this drama wasn't the same programme that I had found so entertaining back in 2020! Back then I'd have given this well-scoped drama an IMDb rating of 7 or 8 stars out of 10. But I was so disappointed in Series 2 that I genuinely wondered if the year-and-a-half of COVID-19 stressful events that we'd all gone through, had finally got to me . . . I.e. That perhaps it was just me & I was simply feeling too low by 2021 to 'get' this programme any more . . .

So I Googled for reviews, to see if I was alone in my dismay at the change in the second series. A series that now seemed to be written by an inexperienced 18 year old . . . And aimed at even more focus-less teenagers. And nothing like Series 1.

And I was delighted to find that - no, COVID hasn't yet got to me mentally! - that there WERE other people who felt the same way. The series HAD changed & NOT for the better.

Rather than state my own detailed opinions here, I shall - for the one & only occasion in my life - restate something online (retweeting, or indeed Tweeting, not being my thing!). I shall quote here what several other viewers have stated at IMDb. These reviewers have quite literally picked the gist of what I myself would have written, & stated succinctly too. So it would be better - rather than iterate the exact same opinions - to instead acknowledge these contributions at IMDb. If I may, I suggest you read these reviews & you'll see what I myself would have written (almost verbatim!): ▶ Sonerila7 ▶ kathrinchow ▶ claredlynch ▶ mkhiggins-22945

Their reviews state exactly what I could & would have said, and uncannily so. I want to credit their words & their phrasing. It is also relevant in my review to state that others' opinions were the same as mine. So I want to credit IMDb's review section for enabling this support. As that was my first concern: i.e. Not was the series any good overall, but was I correct in thinking that Series 2 was nothing like the first series.

As the second series appears to be an almost completely different style of programme, it was calming for me to realise - when I read the myriad reviews at IMDB - that I hadn't got this enormous fact wrong. It WAS different from Series 1, greatly so, & to no good end.

So from 7 stars down to 5. Sorry RTE, but you got this wrong. You should have stayed with a sufficiently in-depth analysis of a girl whose life had gone somewhat off-piste. Not careered into a lost set of characters!

Losing the Joy
usafchief-6594315 January 2021
Expectations are dangerous things and series 2 has lost some of the magic that really made series 1 (which I'm watching because it's that good) a solid 9. I'd still like to see a series 3, to see if Amy Huberman, can recapture the Joy of series 1.

Melodramatic Comedy with some Bonkers twists
nathanhogan-5865112 November 2018
This new comedy will give you pause at first but stick with it, it's well worth the watch and definitely more funny then the dozens of American Comedies that come out every year!

Diabolical
tonyberfield13 October 2020
RTE expect the people of Ireland to watch rubbish like Finding Joy and The Young Offenders. The only comedy in both is the forced and cringe variety. God as if one season of this wasn't bad enough they do a second one as if people aren't fed up enough. Christ.

Wonderful comedic timing
dyan-146545 December 2018
I really love this show. The comedic timing is genius and the relationships between the characters is really fun to watch. The narrative by the dog is rather clever. It makes me giggle out loud in each episode.

Why? Just why?
jhartogs14 October 2020
I fail to understand what the point of it is? Is it supposed to be funny? If so, it fails miserably at that. Is it factual or a reflection of Irish society? Fail To think our license fees have been spent on this you understand why people think they should stop paying for their TV license. This is muck, pure muck.

Neurosis has never been so funny
schubej-116 December 2018
I really enjoyed watching Joy stumble through every episode not only dealing with her emotions regarding her personal life but being pushed into some painful and funny moments related to her work. Amy Huberman is delightful and the show is incredibly entertaining. I certainly hope there is a second season to enjoy.

Another dud from RTE.
johnbalance15 October 2020
I'm now convinced RTE are incapable of doing comedy. This is the worst thing since Extra Extra. Awful, just awful.

Pre covid & no hand shaking
kjohoy16 January 2022
Loved this wish there was more!!!

I'm in California it's 2022 and really enjoyed binging this series. Funny how it's pre covid and Joy isn't a very touchy feeling kind of gal and yet this is how we all need to greet each other now during pandemic times, tapping elbows, no high five with hands and no kissing on the cheek. Glad to see familiar female comedy actresses that have moved on to other great series.

Painfully unfunny.
roberthayes-5497513 October 2020
Amy Huberman must have something on someone important in RTE it's the only explanation. RTE are determined to make a star of Amy Huberman despite the population of Ireland. If she read the phone book they'd put it on air and call it a season. Terrible, awful, bad nothing show about nothing. Hilary Rose guest stars with her one tone and one expression. An island full of great talent but unfortunately that talent doesn't seem to make it to TV. Maybe some talentless casting directors in Ireland might be the cause. Making stars of mediocre actors that would never make it outside of Ireland.

Lighthearted fun - hope there's more to come
sarahwemple24 December 2018
I've liked everything I've seen with Amy Huberman, and found this lighthearted and charming. I hope there's more to come. I'll binge-watch every season produced. The supporting cast mates are a treat as well.

TOTAL TRASH. What happened to this show?
Sonerila711 April 2021
I was so excited when season 2 was released. Got my tea & sat back to watch Finding Joy. Oh, joy. But my jaw dropped as this trash began to unfold. WTH??? I clicked on the 2nd episode, but it was worse. Seemed like it was put together by some tweens, attempting to make the grossest, stupidest show for shocks & giggles. It was just completely unwatchable & embarrassing for all involved.

The Low rating is NOT warranted....
Tango20194 January 2019
Not sure why this show has such low rating here. It deserves a much higher rating.

The early episodes are reminiscent of Bridget Jones, but then it takes a life of it's own. I enjoyed how it gently mocked "new age" stuff in one of the episodes. If you like Bridget Jones, you will like this as well. All about acceptance of who you are flaws and all.

New favorite
lockettjk30 December 2018
Amy Huberman is excellent as the neurotic, sad, emotionally immature Joy. She's aware of her shortcomings and despite some self knowledge, like the rest of us, continues to make poor choices along the way to living with less fear.

Truly awful
mkhiggins-229451 March 2021
Really enjoyed the first season. Season 2? Awful. The show is trying toooo hard, why did the character not take the job offer from the season finale of season one? This 8s just dismal.

mmmmmthatgirl1 January 2019
I always like Amy's work.

A joyful comfort show that I enjoyed binge watching in bed after the usual New Year's eve highs (2019 hopes) and lows (2018 disappointments).

mmmmm, what a soothing relief😊

Looking forward to another season and, 2019😉

Season 2 was really disappointing
playballk14 August 2021
I enjoyed Season 1 especially with the narration of canine Aidan. Season 2 was awful. I stopped watching about halfway through because I could no longer stand to watch it.

Not Funny
lorensmahon2 November 2020
I'm not sure what audience this show is aimed at but I'm a mum to an 18 year old and neither of us found it funny. We were just baffled! The whole premise, including the main character Joy, seems to be based on the Bridget Jones franchise. But the script isn't funny and the supporting cast do little other than make exaggerated faces at the main character. Look, if comedy was easy, we'd all be doing it! Try something along the lines of a drama like Normal People next time? Or a thriller? Or better again, something original and creative. In Finding Joy the main character seems to spend quite a bit of time in bed. Time now to put the show to bed.
