Great performance from Eloise Mumford
HotToastyRag19 December 2021
Animal lovers, take your first step in the military Christmas genre with A Veteran's Christmas. It stars a woman who was honorably discharged and misses her K9 dog, who was not discharged along with her. It just breaks your heart when she looks at pictures of them together on her phone. She may get a healthy dose of the Christmas spirit when she gets stranded in a small town (yes, this is a Hallmark movie), but she still misses her dog terribly.

I loved Eloise Mumford's performance. She really seemed like a veteran. Her eyes were never fully happy, and it was very clear she'd seen the horrors of war. Her mannerisms were masculine and sometimes stilted, successfully putting across her awkwardness at civilian life. But besides Eloise's convincing performance, the rest of the cast isn't much to write home about. It feels like a movie that was made by a church group - which is fine, but it doesn't have the best production values or most interesting screenplay out there. There's also a heavy religious theme to the movie, which will appeal to some and not to others. For a simple movie with an unexpected tug on your heart (yes, I teared up at the end), check this one out. Grab your hankies for a double-feature with Holiday for Heroes.

Worthy of your time

I'm watching this movie for the second time in a week. I'm a married man, what can I say?

This is a highly enjoyable Hallmark movie. There is a lot of chemistry between the two main actors and the supporting cast is solid.

Eloise Mumford is wonderful but...
MichaelByTheSea2 January 2022
Eloise Mumford should be one of the Hallmark Queens by now. My initial reaction was that she was too beautiful to play a 6 year Marine vet, but she really captured the angst and confusion of her character.

Sean Faris' judge, on the other hand, was wildly unrealistic both in and out of the courtroom. I'm a lawyer and I've never seen a judge smile so much or behave so oddly in court. And, as other reviewers have noted, the townsfolk (and the staging) had a creepy Stepford/Body Snatchers feel.

There was also a line about how a local tree farm donates 1,000 trees to vets every year. That also seemed wildly unrealistic.

Still, there are some sweet moments and a great ending.

And Eloise Mumford.

Tear jerker but in a good way.

From multiple scenes in the movie you can pretty well guess how it will end. However it still pulls at your heartstrings.

Sean Faris and Eloise mumphord were in Christmas with Holly and to be honest they had better chemistry in that movie than in this one.

But all in all it is a fantastic movie

Pulls all the strings..

Marine Veteran and dog lover finds herself stranded and gets a welcome from the town she can't even imagine. Both leads are great Sean Faris as Joe and Eloise Mumford as Grace.

Enjoyable, worth a watch. Have tissues for the ending!

It's no Christmas With Holly, but it's good.

Warning: Spoilers
Sean Faris and Eloise Mumford should do a Christmas movie together every year. Both have a natural exuberance and charisma that meshes their personalities beautifully. The story is just so so and kind of hokey, but it's just a framework for the amazing performances of two talented actors.

A very sweet movie
disneyed9 December 2018
I'm a Hallmark junkie, and there have been some movies this year that 10 minutes in I was bored. Not this one. It totally grabbed me and kept me entertained. EXCEPT....the lead male. Throughout the whole movie I felt like I was watching him impersonating Tom Cruise acting in this movie. His mannerisms, the way he would angle his head and most of all the big grin and the laugh. It was comical at first, but got annoying as it went on. Am I the only one who saw this? LOL, anyway, it was a good movie. Predictable, of course...they all are. But I love them anyway!

Really wanted to like this
readingsbyjd19 December 2019
I have seen Sean Faris before in other movies, but his acting was stiff and I agree the vibe was creepy. He seemed to be over acting, almost like he was making fun of the role. I suspect there may have been some over directing, since the writer and director are the same person. The storyline has potential and I have enjoyed these actors in other roles, something was just off. Someone at Hallmark dropped the ball when they let this one pass without asking for some scenes to be redone for a more natural feel

Nice bit of schmaltzy romance for Christmas
sue-062391 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
An appealing, pretty ex-Marine is stranded in a small town after her car breaks down. A young town judge offers her a place to stay at his home until the car is ready. He is such a nice person, loved by his family, his dog and everyone in the town. How could she not fall for him?

Yes, it is predictable and corny, but it was a nice watch and makes you wish you actually lived in a small town in America that is populated seemingly by lovely people who celebrate the festive season in such a charming way.

Never heard of any of the actors but this is basically a feel-good festive film and worth a watch! He looks a little like a young, taller Tom Cruise.

A no for me
ariesarefunfun15 December 2020
I do like the fact they used a female as the veteran. Nice twist. But she looked so demure and not confident. Did not look like what i would think of as an army captain. I was so tired of her sad timid look i couldn't finish it. The judge was really good looking but his eyes were always so wide he not only looked a little creepy but like he was high. Over acting and just nerve racking

What a great actress
jkramer-3663621 March 2019
I am new to the Hallmark channel and was able to watch A Veterans Christmas. I don't normally watch this type of movie. However, I was amazed at this lead actress and her fabulous acting ability. Her facial expressions and body language during the movie were superb. She is definitely an actress worth watching. I will definitely be watching for more movies she star's in. A truly great performance.

Pretty veteran and judge fall in love
phd_travel17 January 2019
A bit different from the usual Hallmark Christmas movie - no little business that need saving. A pretty veteran Elioise Mumford who deals with dogs has a car accident and meets a single eligible judge Sean Faris.

They are both likeable if a little if unrealistically photogenic. They do have chemistry.

If you have to choose 1 Hallmark movie for this Christmas this would be an okay one.

A good one!
MIssM1919 November 2018
Grace, after her Honorable discharge is at lost when having to reajust to civilian life in a town she doesn't know. Luckily, after an accident near his house Joe welcomes her into his house. Not only do they get to know and like each other but also his whole family.

IT INVOLVES DOGS! And that was enough for me.

Both leads were great, as well as the supporting cast. The chemistry was amazing. My only complain is that there were a few of loose moments, and I was actually expecting a little more since this is a HM movies and mysteries one, which tend to be more complex.

I enjoyed it a lot. I will probably watch it again someday. This one is a keeper.

Who doesn't love a good old romance where the dog is the missing link?
Ed-Shullivan28 November 2020
Actress Eloise Mumford plays army veteran Grace Garland who after being honorably discharged is driving home in the car she jus bought when she loses control of her vehicle in the new fallen snow and crashes into the "right" tree. By that I mean the first person to reach her is not a human being but an adorable boxer dog who we subsequently learn from the dog's owner Joe, is named Justice. After being a bit stunned with an open bleeding cut on her forehead from the unexpected winter car crash into the tree Justice brings Grace to the front door of his master's house Joe's beautiful and scenic property.

As Joe explains why he has named his dog justice Grace finds out that Joe is single and gainfully employed as the small town's civic judge. Grace and Joe find an immediate connection but Grace misses her own dog who she had named Christmas and whom she had worked with the past six years searching for mines while deployed in Afghanistan.

Grace gets to meet Joe's mother, and his sister's family and everything seems perfect until Grace discovers that Joe's ex-fiance is back in town and looking to re-kindle their romance. But Joe's boxer dog Justice keeps Grace grounded and she is willing to stay in town at Joe's bunk house while her car is being repaired at Joe's uncle's garage. Every time Grace talks to or plays with Justice she pines for her own service dog Christmas who she knows has a greater calling in Afghanistan after Grace was dishonourably discharged after she herself was injured while in the line of duty.

This is a nice little Christmas themed story surrounding family, new romance and of course loving and caring dogs, so hey, it's a nice Christmas themed made for TV film with a happy ending.

I give it a 6 out of 10 IMDB rating.

Enjoyable Christmas Movie
karencoughlin6 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this movie and have watched it many times. Yes it is corny but acting much better than most. I wish they showed more of the dogs. The part that I found too unrealistic even for a Hallmark movie, was the ex-girlfriend who professes her love to Joe, that she never stopped thinking about him, bending over backwards to help bring Grace's dog to the States including the two women exchanging a big hug. And in the real world the person answering the door would not look like Sean Faris, be single, have an awesome job and own the perfect beautifully decorated country home and offer Earl Grey tea! Lol

Dogs make everything better

Pretty good story. Eloise Mumford is great, Sean Faris' acting is a bit hammy at times but not so bad that its unwatchable.

Cute movie, but...
englchen7-346-27994423 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Grace was just honorably discharged from the Marines, comes back stateside, but nobody is waiting for her. To make things worse, she had to leave her beloved dog "Christmas" behind. She crashes her car into a fence and meets "Justice", a dog that instantly takes to her. Grace ends up at Judge Joe's house, the dog's owner, who invited her to stay at his guest house. The rest is your typical Christmas Hallmark movie. The movie is corny and some of the lines are definitively overdone, but overall it's quite enjoyable aside from the military goofs. What I didn't like was the end. Grace gets Christmas back, but for someone who loves and missed her dog so much she barely pays any attention to Christmas. It makes the whole story unbelievable and kind of ruined the movie for me.

I love this movie I have watch it a dozen times and I still can't get enough of it. I record this movie on my DVR every year since it came out. If my dvr would let me keep more the 3 months I could watch it when ever I wanted all year around. I've been trying to find it on dvd but no luck so far.

Good but could've been great!
troylandes-457127 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I've wanted to see Eloise Mumford and Sean Faris together again ever since I saw them in Christmas With Holly in 2012. I'd hoped for a sequel as it's one of my favorite Christmas movies with a great cast and story. I was very happy to finally see these two actors on Hallmark again, however was dissapointed overall.. This movie had potential to be really great, not just good.

Hallmark has a formula it rarely changes and all of the expected pieces of that formula were in this movie. The almost kiss, the ex returning, the misunderstanding that causes one person to leave in the last ten minutes of the show, and then the quick make up and end on a kiss. The Christmas movies often have lead characters ice skating and it looks obvious when the actors aren't actually skating. This time the skating looked real. Yet, the entire scene became plain ridiculous and was ruined by the ex girlfriend doing the championship spin. I felt I was watching a movie for a young teenager. Plus she did not look like an ex of a judge and pillar of the community. I was dissapointed Faris's character was made to be so nerdy. It also went overboard on all the child advice. I don't think it came anywhere close to reality having a young girl confiding her fears multiple times to a stranger. I'd have liked more depth from this movie.

Hallmark needs more military themed movies. I'd have enjoyed this if it was more focused on the military aspect. I kept thinking a search and rescue operation might happen to convince Mumford to stay. The two characters had good chemistry, which is another problem with many of Hallmark movies, they recycle the same actors over and over all year. Many have zero chemistry. These two are not typical Hallmark actors and their talents were under used in this movie. I gave it higher marks based on the actors not the script. Loved the dogs! And showing the connection between a dog and it's handler. Also the difficulty transitioning back to military life.

I think it's time to add more actors and change up the formula. The movies feel like I'm seeing the same thing and people over and over. The fake snow and sets have been worse. If it's cold or snowing, I don't believe it. When it's freezing outside, cold air (fog) should show when a person is breathing. Most the time, no one acts cold when it's suppose to be. This year has had the worse sets I've seen. I could ignore that, if the storyline kept my attention. This movie wasn't bad, but it could've been so much better!

little more than nice
Kirpianuscus18 October 2022
Predictability becomes , in this case, a sort of virtue. A young good looking judge, a young veteran and her car accident, a small town who seems just a large family and, the perfect ingredient, a lovely Justice. The way to church is, in same measure, a significant virtue.

Short, just comfortable story, with a Sean Farris remembering a young Christopher Reeve and an Eloise Mumford looking like a young Romy Schneider. And, sure, the good job of supporting actors.

A nice film for its seductive freshness. Sure, the last part has all the sins of Hallmark productions , the unrealism reigning but the atmosphere of pure and rich joy is a good gift.

So, maybe little more than nice film.

Huh?
salukilover21 November 2018
Outlandish plot. Very attractive female Marine Corps Captain leaving active duty arrives home from war zone a few weeks before Christmas. She has received Silver Star and Soldier's Medal in Afghanistan. No one is waiting for her. She has a car accident on way to a new job. Dog arrives and takes her to a young single judge's home in a small town. She misses her K9 bomb sniffing dog in Afghanistan, so really likes his dog. He happens to have his home perfectly decorated for Christmas.... likewise his perfectly appointed guest house which he offers her while his uncle fixes her car, the only repair service in the small town. OH MY GOD! Who writes stuff like this?
