Avoid this if you're Alicia Silverstone fan...
drosenberg-5703730 December 2020
A really disappointing, disjointed story that could have been so, so much better if actor and producer Alicia Silverstone had focused on one or two of the storylines. We're big fans but want to forget and should have avoided this film effort of hers.

Could've Been So Much Better
karissamaree8218 December 2020
As a very recent sister of the groom myself, I was really looking forward to watching this movie. I was disappointed within the first 5 minutes and by the end, was super disappointed because this could've been so good!

It was clear what they were trying to do, but none of the characters or relationships were developed at all. Each scene felt choppy and independent from each other.

The only two relatable characters were played by Alicia Silverstone and Tom Everett Scott, who were the only enjoyable characters in the movie.

More Potential Than Accomplishment

Warning: Spoilers
There is a good angle for this plot. The Grooms sister brings her husband to her brother's wedding and has a whole lot of issues. She is failing in her own life, her husband is having problems too. Then when she meets the young chick marrying her brother, things just do not fit. Her strange relatives really put a strange surreal quality on the proceedings.

It does not help that she is turning 40 (must be nice for Silverstone who is actually older than that). Plus she has twins who because the Wedding was rescheduled she does not bring. The quality writing is in the sister and brother's characters who are fully developed. The fault is in the Bride and her family who seem to have been duct taped into the script. At least the bride is a you chick who has some issues that come out.

There are mature issues of sex, lies, and dead relatives that come into play. What gets me is the dead relatives seem to be more alive than the brides family which seems to hang around like deadwood through out the movie.

I suppose it is correct that all the deadwood is having a party at a table during the closing credits of the movie. It would have been better to put some major bloopers here. Why that did not happen is strange, because the movie is not good enough that there were not some good bloopers for the closing.

At least the plot can be followed though the end of the movie is just a ending.

fost of stories

I love it. For very subiective reasons. Test, not a coherent story, not the best job of Alicia Silveston, but good support for remind passing decades of life, crisis în different forma and intensity, second chances and a wedding in its very nice stepa. And , sure, some Judaism, loneliness. And nostalgia.

A fist of stories for middle age public.

Terrible

Aweful!! Alicia Silverstone's acting is terrible. What a waste of time. I kept waiting for it to get better but it just got worse. Don't waste your time unless you think she's a good actor.

Why
Before202028 May 2021
How can such a bad actress still be acting? This movie was horrible and the acting didn't help. The type of movie that makes you not care for any of the characters because it's so dumb.

So glad I watched
I didn't know what to expect because I'd not heard of it beforehand, but I was pleasantly surprised. I fully resonated with Alicia's character and how she wanted to fully and freely live though she felt she'd missed her prime opportunity. As crazy as it may seem I was hoping that she would have participated in some small way during the beach scene towards the end of the movie, though I don't know how she would have seeing as her brother was there.

Sister of the Groom is a romantic, chaotic, funny, and relatable ride.

A waste of time!

Basically, a group of characters gather fir a wedding and then treat each other awfully. Such a waste of some good actors.

Warning: Spoilers
Watched it for Silverstone. I really like her. Not the best actress, but her movies are always good. What bothered me about this movie is how incredibly insufferable the brother is. He is completely blind and a total idiot. Unbelievable. Don't watch if you can't stand people making the biggest mistake of their life with a goofy grin on their face. Because that describes the brother.

Pleasantly surprised!
karelysparada22 April 2021
I really wasn't expecting much when I put this movie on just to have some background noise while I working. However, I was soon sucked in to the story and could not look away. This movie has relatable sibling drama, funny and realistic dialogue, and an interesting twist with the Jewish/French/Long Island foundation. Yeah the main character went off the walls sometimes, which made you lose sympathy for her, but it was clear she was not meant to be a perfect person. She's flawed just like everyone. I laughed a bunch, was entertained the whole way through, and do not think it deserves a low rating.

Horrendous and offensive

Warning: Spoilers
This film is a beyond difficult watch. A drunk, painful to watch performance turned in my Alicia, along with a narrative around shaming the age of 40, body after babies, and multiple abortions.

The rest of the cast isn't compelling. The script, scenes, and music choices are tough to actually get through.

Cheers to the crew that probably had a though time shooting this.

Umm
macrox-5788623 April 2023
It came on after a movie we were watching... thought it was a horror film in that it made no sense but no it was just a bad movie. Unless you are a 40 year old woman going through a mid life crisis and have brother that's challenged don't watch this movie.

I have 334 characters I'm being forced to write in order to write a review and hey I'm already this far. This reminds me of all my college essays just rambling on filling the page which nonsense until I fill my word requirement; which is a great metaphor for this movie. Basically there's a lot of wasted time/money and you just try to get through it.

Cheers to the film crew for enduring!

Actually Pretty Cute and Funny

There's nothing wrong with this movie, it was actually pretty cute and entertaining! Sure, it's a bit over the top - but I thought it was rather clever and fun!

Strange & Unique Midlife Fairytale
bettinahooper4 March 2021
In a both broad and nuanced performance, Silverstone heads the cast of Sister of the Groom as Audrey, woman attending her brother's wedding on a date which was switched at the last minute to the weekend of her 40th birthday. Over the course of the weekend, Audrey's resentment piles up against Clemence, the young and careless bride, highlighting Audrey's own midlife issues.

The film has many funny moments but is not a comedy. The excellent script is full to bursting with character, backstory, history and humanity but the real spine of the story are Audrey and Clemence, portrayed in an excellent performance by Mathilde Olivier, despite an almost too dislikeable character, an oversight on the part of of writer director Amy Miller Gross.

Sister of the Groom was better written, constructed and cast than most films out there. Gross is definitely a film maker to watch.

Entertaining
cliff31426 December 2020
So here's the thing, we like romcoms and the like. And although the "going to a wedding" setup has been done many times, it is a great basis upon which to build a story. Sister of the Groom contains all the elements required to keep you engaged for 90 minutes - conflict, drama, humour, romance and a very nice setting. Frankly, I am surprised at the relatively low rating. The acting is solid, the dialogue is believable, the characters are interesting and the story flows along through the couple of days with the wedding near the end. Just sit back and relax and you will be entertained.

Fun, witty, whimsical
teh_popcorn7 July 2021
Went into it with zero expectations. Pay attention to the dialogue, the humor and little nuisances were quite amusing. I've watched it twice and picked up on other jokes I had missed. Humor/plots can be quite subjective, but I'm glad I gave this movie a shot.

Uneven but still enjoyable
mtasurfer19 December 2020
There's much to like in the sophomore effort from director Amy Miller Gross- snappy, realistic dialogue, and unsurprisingly solid chemistry from the leads and a poignant performance from the late lovable Mark Blum who I've seen in films since Desperately Seeking Susan. The first 40 minutes or so, as characters are being introduced are excellent, and I really loved the use of wedding-invite-styled scene dividers. The film loses steam in the middle as Alicia Silverstone's character increases her aggression towards her future sister-in-law, so much that she lost my sympathy. The central conflict resolves rather abruptly. However, the final scene between Tom Everett Scott and Alicia was one of the best in the film though. I give this film higher marks since I see it was from a newer director. Production value is excellent - refined music that supports the emotion and tasteful cinematography.

Quite enjoyed it!
whitakerjocelyn25 July 2021
Not normally my type of movie. I'm more into thrillers, not so much the feels. I just threw it on for background while web surfing after midnight, but was quickly sucked into wanting to know what would happen next. There was just enough "oh no, she didn't!" without being constant cringing. A hard balance to achieve. Left me feeling lighter after watching than when I went in. Might just have to look for some popular rom coms I've been avoiding. :-)

Drew me in right away
angelicacamaron24 September 2022
I like Alicia Silverstone so I was thrilled to find this movie. I didn't have high expectations for it, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised. The acting was decent, the production values were good, and the scenery was great. I don't think the current rating is justified so while I think this movie is a solid eight, I'm going to rate a ten. I enjoyed the movie so much that I will be rewatching. I was sad to hear the actor who played Alicia Silverstone's father passed away from complications of Covid. I first saw him in Desperately Seeking Susan. Forty five more characters until I can post this...
