Fun, twists & toxic feminism
Lou-Series20 March 2019
Best episode of the show yet. I need to confess I'm a big fan of body-changing episodes, they're always really fun. Also a nice twist at the end of the episode (wich I didn't see coming, but I'm pretty sure many of you will).

(Slight spoiler about an event that happened, nothing important for the plot of the show)

Now, my only problem with this episode: Mel. It started great, for the first time on this show I was thinking: "this is it! I love the three sisters!". Then Mel encountered with Parker and treated him like crap, calling him "white male cliché" (ironic considering she's the biggest toxic feminist cliché ever) even tho he did nothing wrong! Maggie is his girlfriend! They got a long way ahead if they wanna make Mel likeable. But honestly... I don't think the writers plan to stop writing her as such a jerk. Just sad. This could be so much better.

PC agenda back
allie20135 April 2019
My first review was declined so I'll keep this short and sweet. I had been thinking this show was improved and was not pushing the politically correct agenda as much. But in this episode the ridiculous way over the top PC agenda is back in full force. It was beyond ridiculous. And I like the show but some of it was really laughable.

The new Charmed hits its stride at last
bahnapa20 March 2019
Although the beginning of the season seemed kind of shaky in places, this episode, "Switches and Stones," has finally lived up to the promise of the Charmed reboot. It has even taken the narrative to a level the first series hadn't reached (no fault of the first series, just that the world in general has seen 20 years of progress for women since then). This was a thoroughly enlightening and satisfying episode of solid feminism. It brought a fresh look at the myth of Medusa and how she became what she was: a victim of rape, slut-shaming, and unjust punishment that forced her into being a monster. The way the Charmed ones, especially Macy, turned the narrative around and began the healing process for Medusa is a powerful example of healing for women who have survived rape and slut-shaming. This is where the show truly realizes its strength. At the end comes a shocking reveal that moves ahead the season's whodunit story arc.

In a subplot, it was fun to see Maggie and Mel trade bodies, where Melonie Diaz and Sarah Jeffery get to imitate the other character's speech, mannerisms, makeup, and fashions. Also, I've been on Team Jada all along and was pleased to see her vindicated!

Jodie Foster or Lindsay Lohan?

Warning: Spoilers
This week we have a remake of an old Phoebe and Paige plotline, although it's fun to see Sophia Jeffrey and Melanie Diaz having to cope with playing each other's parts for most of the episode. The result is Mel struggling to survive in Maggie's more feminine world while Maggie gets an insight into the secrets Mel's been keeping. And it feels like more of the show laughing at its initial militantism than embracing it to have Parker realise who Mel is when she's obnoxious to him. Meanwhile, there's a Monster of the Week at work and it does ultimately feed into Macy's storyline, as she gets to be the brains of the outfit again and work out a more sensitive solution than chopping the demon's head off. To be honest, it is hard to see the original resisting the temptation to end the moral uncertainty with a simple vanquishing.

By the end, Maggie seems to have accepted Mel's trust of Jada. The Elders aren't particularly reassuring, but Fiona's hardline attitude doesn't seem much more measured. But just as we're starting to get an idea of who we can trust and who we can't, the ending turns everything on its head. Or maybe it doesn't. Sometimes it's hard to be sure with this show.
