Obsidian killing it, as usual
danthayer30 October 2019
Fantastically written dialogue and deep character customisation make this an absolute gem. Funny as hell, as well as deeply ironic, it plays smoothly and looks great. I've experienced no bugs at all, showing Bethesda that it is indeed possible to create an excellent open world RPG that isn't horrifically broken.

A delightful and liberating SciFi RPG.
parrot00710 November 2019
This game was a very pleasant surprise; I had barely heard about it before it had come out. But I enjoyed every moment of it, begining to end. A large portion of the game is dialogue, and one of the Outer World's strengths is it's engaging writing and multi level branching conversations. They DO someone lack dynamics, as all conversations take a place in a shoulders up view like New Vegas or FO3. Your companions will chime in with interesting things to say and also will give you dialogue skill bonuses, It's definitely worth considering who you bring with you when you set out. For example, Parvati (played so well by Ashley Burch) gives you bonuses to persuade with how adorable she is. All of this matters too; the amount of choices you make over the game to determine Halcyon's fate is incredible and results in many types of endings. You really can burn any bridge or kill any person and there will still be a path to continue. The main story isn't super long, especially if you have good dialogue skills, but it's replayability and other activities more than make up for it. As for gameplay, the game leaves a little to be desired with its core mechanical feel. Combat feels a little static on its own, and stealth can be inconsistent and difficult. Luckily, it has a fun slow motion ability and satisfying companion special moves. While the environments have a lot of interesting places and people, they don't feel as open as they should sometimes. Other than that I had no other problems with this game. It's personality, world building, and humor make it 100% worth it. RPG fans, don't skip this one!!!

What. A. Game.
vincent-2269210 November 2019
This game is so unique and fun. Sometimes in long open world games I get a little bored because there's a lack of things to do, well that didn't happen here. This game is rich with different characters, factions, and locations. Get this game as soon as possible

Obsidian hits it out of the park!
deaeight27 October 2019
Just wow. When this great, proper action RPG gets compared with Bethesda's latest offering, it really is embarrassing just how far Bethesda have fallen. The outer worlds looks fantastic, runs smooth as silk (on PS4 Pro) and is rich in detail, content, character development options, customisation and combat. It is everything you could possibly hope this genre of video game would be and a ton load more added in just as a bonus - out of the collective goodness of Obsidian's heart.

This gem! From the creator of the fan favourite Fallout New Vegas, Obsidian is once again showing Bethesda how it's REALLY done - (to the point of dishing out a huge dose of abject humiliation in the process in this particular case)

Compare The Outer Worlds to the broken mess that was and still is Fallout 76, with its over priced micro transactions and utterly disgraceful, borderline criminal (imo) Subscription "Service." Bethesda (probably being forced to by its owner Zenimax to do so) have turned their sheer greed and audacity up to 11 and have just gone straight for the "desperate cash grab" strategy aimed directly (and ruthlessly) at the few players that actually stuck with their half finished rubbish. That's what fan loyalty got them! Nice!

Anyway, compare that dumpster fire atrocity of a game with this. Night and Day only begins to illustrate the point.

That said, we do now have to anxiously wait to see if Take 2 interactive decides to introduce micro transactions into the outer worlds and break all of our hearts in doing so. Please T2I. Just Nooooo!

TLTR:

1 Good game by a good developer = buy 2 Bad game by a bad developer = leave to others to buy

The Outer Worlds = 1. Fallout 76 = 2

A Promising New Franchise
BadgerStorm43458 May 2020
The Outer Worlds was some of the most fun I've had with a new game in a very long time. I found myself wrapped up in the Colony of Halcyon as much as the characters were. The graphics are beautiful but also very different from typical graphics. This game has a smooth style while also using very similar elements to Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4. Gameplay is refreshing and feels so well polished. I loved some of the characters and all of the locations. The creatures are new and innovative and the guns are creative. I've never found myself liking a game so easily. The Outer Worlds has some problems with design of some characters as well as a healing system that could be improved. The Outer Worlds doesn't do much wrong and does a lot of things very very well.

A very good game.
neilw-996837 November 2019
This is a very good game. It is heavy on dialogue, with many conversation options. The graphics are bright, colourful and imaginative. Unlike many new games there are barely any bugs or glitches and none of them are game breaking. No micro transactions, no loot boxes, this is a complete game. If you felt cheated by the absolute crap that was Fallout 76 as I did buy this game. Bethesda take note, this is how you make a game, and Tod Howard pull your head out of your back.

This game does nothing but surprise!
kaydentullett8 February 2020
A very compelling game with superb characters with interesting personalities and personal quests. The story itself is interesting, as you will be tasked with uncovering a dark conspiracy. There are plenty of enjoyable side missions to strive with, so you'll have plenty of energetic fun when exploring this huge game and its beautiful planets. The soundtrack is very rememberable, so get your devices out and get on with downloading those tracks. This is one of those games where you question whether or not to purchase it, but once you've made that choice to adopt the game with your many other games, you realise you've made a glorious choice. 8/10.

This is not a bad game but this is not a super game
classic-cap31 August 2020
This is not a bad game but this is not a super game, I would prefer to play fallout NV or fallout 3 / 4 over this.

It has a very short story with a lot of side missions what felt like main part of this game, It had no characters what gave any lasting impression, But the combat is fun, you can do a lot of the game just by talking your way through what is a nice change and the story is not great but just good enough to make me keep going to the end what was a Disappointing ending to a game what felt mediocre at best.

The Outer Worlds Review
Moviememmer1 August 2020
Pros:
  • Decent story & characters
  • Good gameplay
  • Unique setting
  • Great RPG elements
  • Bright and colourful graphics
  • Interesting companions
  • Barely any bugs and glitches (very pleasing)

Cons:
  • World doesn't feel as organic or deep as compared to Fallout
  • Some parts feel abit bland and forgettable
  • Game can get abit repetitive
  • Limited character creation

Verdict: Outer Worlds focuses more on RPG elements instead of the exploration (basically the opposite of Fallout 4). I enjoyed the RPG elements, however some rough spots kinda brought the game down. I enjoyed the game overall thou.

Unpoplur Opinion....
jtitus0915 June 2020
I'm on my second playthrough and I gotta say it.... IT'S BETTER THAN SKYRIM! Yeah, I went there! It's short, sure, but SO WELL thought out and beautifully executed. Oh, and that Dr. Ellie Fenhill...

Really good for what it has but is lacking to much to make it great
maxbntn2 January 2020
Really fun for about the first 10 hours, but then gets a little stale. The characters are really strong, and the choices you make feel real and I found myself really thinking about what would be the best choice. The story does feel a bit short, but the part that bothered me was the amount of items and enemies in the game. After a while you find that you are simply finding the same weapons and armor over and over again. And fighting the same enemies over and over again. Overall I had a lot of fun playing the game but got pretty bord near the end.

Disappointingly mediocre
Pigeon42011 January 2020
I really really wanted to play this game. I took my time with it at the start, exploring every area and every dialogue option. But after 10 hours, it's clear that this game is just okay at best. It has failed to captivate me like other RPGs have. Sure, the companions are good (Parvati is especially charming). The game isn't a buggy mess which is nice. Also, there does seem to be some player choice like in New Vegas, but otherwise? The worlds seem very small and lack life, with loads of generic enemies. The marauders are all the same and I wish they'd have more variety like all the different Fiend types in New Vegas. The story feels linear and to be frank is just boring. The graphics are... alright. For a AAA title that took a few years to develop, I feel like they should look better. The character models aren't the best either.

The weapons and armour are boring as well, as are the perks. Fallout New Vegas had loads of unique perks so I wish Obsidian had tried harder at making the perks in this game interesting. There were also skills that you can add points to, but all the skill checks in the game just seemed really easy to pass. And yes, I will keep comparing TOW to Fallout New Vegas as most of the advertising campaign consisted of "this was made by the creators of New Vegas".

The world-building gets ridiculous at times. So the whole game has a very strong anti-corporation message which I can get behind but the way it's executed is dumb. Early on in the game you reach a colony (which is controlled by one of those corporations) where you find out that the best workers get given medicine so they can survive the plague, whereas those who don't work as hard or whatever just get left to die by the corporation as a punishment. Surely it would be better for the corporation to let their workers live so they can create more profit? I get that this game is meant to be a critique of corporations but they have been made to look comically evil in this game, to a ridiculous extent.

All in all it seems like everyone only thinks this game is "so amazing" because we've gotten used to recent games, especially RPGs, being subpar. It also seems like people are forcing themselves to love this game as a "take that" to Bethesda.

Fallout NV in Space!
hardergamer-7365215 March 2020
We all know how FO76 is a massive let down, and how in FO4 you soon ran out of things to do... Well The Outer Worlds is not like them at all ! It feels like FONV loads of different things to do, it leaves you thinking what to do next ! Best game I have played in 2 years. 10/10

Like ME1, it's a good start.
jecskene10 January 2022
Cain and Boyarski are two of the major powerhouses in Computer RPG's. The writing and intrigue is spot on. The combat is decent and challenging as well. It seems to lack life, however. I'm not sure if that is something I can blame the game for since it was written for a new audience with all the "new audience" issues underlying the dialogue and interactions. It seemed a little too "Try Hardy" that way. I bought this game because these guys are old school RPG who say it like it is; I didn't expect they would be so ... constricted. Still...it's a good start.

Fall Effect
kerorogio7 August 2021
A valid game, which takes its cue from Bethesda's "Fallout" saga, placing it in a context of "Mass Effect". Obsidian has always had a passion for this genre of games, but as long as they were independent they had to make ends meet, so the title ended up being less profound and ambitious than the games it is inspired by. Let's start by saying that there is no Karma system, but a more manageable system of popularity with the factions. The comrades, while commenting on many dialogues, are unlikely to impose their vision or contest the stealing of resources in homes. The only real protest personally encountered was from Felix, the hothead of the group, now towards the end of the game, and because he hated a certain character, a moment that reminded me a lot of the Alistair vs Loghain dispute in the first chapter of Dragon Age. On the other hand, the "charisma" system is a pleasure. It's always fun to solve everything with the power of simple dialogue.

As for the controversy over the management of NPCs, there is indeed an evident politicization, not in its totality as we read on the net, but to a large extent, especially in the first half of the game, where we will focus more on the assignments of the space station. To be honest, the perception of the number of female characters is bizarre, in part because they have been given the majority of executive duties and only a few settlements justify their portrayal, which is not very varied in itself.. In Outer World, in fact, women are divided into two types, the tough young girls with short hair (even the ship's AI), and the tough old women with a bun. The only four that I would dare to define feminine are: a secretary more competent than his ambiguous boss, a foolish wild girl with always short hair, the rich mother of the combative Ellie and the sweet mechanic Parvati, who however makes us immediately clear the her following the Sapphic doctrine, in which we will also have to help her. On the other hand, men do not shine in terms of morality and intelligence, except the vicar and, partially, the one who set us free.

Does all this ruin the gaming experience? Absolutely not, the gameplay is solid, classic and fun. After all, the general irony could also make us justify this "modern" vision. Of course... it's bizarre not to be able to have a courtship mechanic, a choice clearly not dictated by the budget but by the pure will of Obsidian. It must be said that the "gray" choices have been made as white / black as possible, as in the case of the Iconoclasts. As if to say, it lacks that flicker of personality, creative freedom and completeness that can elevate OW to a masterpiece, but in itself it is a very valid title, with nice allies, which gave me 41 hours of lightheartedness, and without the Gorgon Dlc. I hope Microsoft's money will now help take the step forward.

This...this is an amazing game.
wcparry28 October 2022
It may not be your cup of tea, but the story, gameplay and how SMOOTH it runs is amazing. The game is fantastic and especially right now, in 2022, you should be playing it. I really REALLY can't wait for another installment, the DLC(s) were both nice and good, added some story time and good play time. Obsidian rocked the crap out of it and although it had the potential to be even greater, it was still STILL super duper great. No spoilers for those that haven 't played it, but DEFINITELY give this team of developers your money, they're worth and and their love child is worth the time to buy and play it. Highly recommended. AND THANK GOODNESS IT IS A GOOD, SINGLE PLAYER STORY, not some garbage MMO we're all suffering through, yet again.

I wanted to really like it
hannahbanana-827 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like this game and at first I really did. But honestly I just thought it got so boring and repetitive. I spent more than half my time on load screens because you have to Fast Travel everywhere otherwise its just the same landscape and slow travel, then most of the game just feels like you're constantly going back and forth to the same locations for different quests that feel kind of irrelevant. I liked the characters though.

Not a bad game
styhsuhsu29 October 2019
As in it's not a great game, and it's not a bad game. It's made by the devs who did Fallout: New Vegas, and you can really see the similarities. That said, I have many issues with the design of the game, it's comedy outlook, and antagonist of choice. All in all? Yea. I guess I'd recommend it. Just not very highly

Weaker than Fallout or Elder Scrolls
Tomniboos30 December 2019
I love these type of RPG games. I haven't played Bethesdas latest online RPG efforts (which are meant to be terrible) but this game compares unfavourably to the likes of Fallout 3, New Vegas (Obsidian's previous effort), Fallout 4, Oblivion or Skyrim.

The world is smaller, the game about a quarter as long as those titles less immersive and much more bland. The characters also compare unfavourably, this is a shame as Obsidian made a much more interesting game in New Vegas and this seemed like a good purchase as a result.

There is also a serious lack of diversity of monsters/ outlaws to kill. The dozens of different threats in the games mentioned above have been whittled down to a much smaller selection which makes it extra repetitive.

In short this seems a bit rushed, the map of the solar system has many several worlds you cannot travel too which makes it appear the area to explore is bigger than it is. Though some worlds such as Monarch are quite large.

On the plus side, this game also seems to have drawn a lot of inspiration from Firefly with your ship baring a remarkable similarity to the Serenity. I also completed it without encountering any bugs, which is something I have never experienced in a Bethesda effort.

Good game but plagued with false dialogue choices
ngregas-3756421 March 2021
So many of the skill checks do nothing to affect the outcome of the conversation and it's insulting to the player's intelligence. Why on earth would I speck into any of the dialogue choices when they have no impact on the game? If I pass the lie check, the npc just laughs in my face as if I failed the lie, but I passed. False choices litter this game.

The final few missions were a little bit of a let down
LovecraftKaiju24 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
TL;DR - A refreshing game in a while considering I'm not really someone who enjoys playing Open World Heavy RPG games.

The Witcher 3 was the last RPG game I completed and even though the writing and mission flow never really reached that level of depth; there are some really good beats sprinkled throughout. Strong start, a meandering mid and a slight let down for an ending

The Outer Worlds manages to be a competent game that is a good experience but would be an excellent one if you can get it during a sale. The endless replay-ablility of the game including all the difficulty levels and multiple ways to go about the missions almost makes it worth full price.

The Good - Art Style was really interesting, beautiful sky-boxes littered through out do a good job making you feel you are in the far flung parts of the Universe.

My favorite part of the game's writing was the Companion Story Lines, I finished the game with just 4 Companions but every story-line succeeded in making me feel for them as a part of my crew.

Gun-play/Mechanics was decently varied with light RPG elements, this kept me going through with relative ease and enjoyment at Normal difficulty with only a few deaths in early stages and one or two near the end; altogether a very breezy and fun play-through.

One of the least-glitchy games I have played in a while and I really appreciated it, aside from a few small ones the game was smooth. Mission Flow could have used a little more attention and polish but still do a good job of interlinking the Main Plot with smaller side jobs effectively negating that feeling of stopping the flow of the story to do a side mission.

The Bad - Sadly a lot of small things here and there start building up, the perk system, two limit companion on missions, the weird skill point system managing to be confusing as well as overly simple at the same time, enemy variety, melee game mechanics; all these things and then some could have used quite a bit of polish and finesse .

Even though the Main Story line on paper seems like you are changing the fate of your Star System playing through does not really feel like it, it lacks a sense of enormity and weight of your gameplay decisions.

A meandering middle section of the story where the pacing seems to slow down but then all of a sudden you realize that you are actually near the end.

The final few missions were a little bit of a let down.

I was so sure that there was some major twist coming in the story since the story really stays a little bland and simple throughout, this could also be because of The Witcher 3 and the intricacies and excellence of the Story/Mission flow has probably ruined other games for me.

Conclusion - A good competent game nonetheless despite all of it's middle of the road choices.

Adequate, but could have been so much more!
those_who_dig3 July 2023
Although the visuals, companions and soundtrack to The Outer Worlds are first-rate, the rest of the game gradually disappoints. Perhaps too much was expected of Obsidian, and this game was bound to be diminished by our memories of Fallout: New Vegas.

This is branded as an RPG but feels more like a rather linear looter-shooter.

The NPCs don't appear to inhabit the world they're placed in - standing in place, often not even interacting with other passing NPCs or their surroundings.

The enemy AI is very limited in both variety and behaviour. You'll soon tire of run-of-the-mill bandits charging at you with no apparent strategy or ability to adapt.

I typically love dialogue-rich games, recently completing the Mass Effect trilogy and making sure to explore every dialogue option in every interaction. That said, the conversations the player has with NPCs in The Outer Worlds feels bloated. Just about every quest-giver has too much to say without any real substance.

Consider it on sale, but otherwise look elsewhere for a role-playing experience that can stand the test of time.
