many ways of love
igornveiga17 July 2022
After all what is love? The summary of various feelings, the love that does not materialize (supermarket scene), the longing for someone who has left (the beggar scene), unrequited love (the guy with the bouquet), A couple's fight (The couple ) on the beach in Lindo but they don't enjoy it together (the old man whose wife dies), The pain of having his lover in a hospital and reflecting on why they are no longer occupying life (Motorcyclist scene in the hospital). Although complete I think it could have gone further and addressed other forms of love, the issue of love between a couple was a little repetitive.

From that the plot works very well in 1 minutes, it makes the expected really reflect in some aspects of life and what is most important and what is most important and how much we need to take care of the excess of computerization in our lives.

A short for sure for adults, a child or teenager, cannot understand or capture a message it wants to convey.

The Windshield Wiper
MovieJunkie516 March 2022
I have to start by saying that I don't agree with any of the reviews so far. I don't think it's meh nor am I blown away.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, it makes you think about yourself and your own life. After all, what is love to you? I'm sure you could identify some scenes as romantic or caring and others not really. Either way it's impossible to be indifferent to it.

The animation is good but for a short animated movie that relies enterely on visuals to get across their message, it could be better.

Overall, a good animated short that may even win best animated short oscar.

Not yet quite sure what to think of it

Warning: Spoilers
The title "The Windshield Wiper" is pretty much a mystery like itself in my opinion. Why the film is called like that. The writer and director is Alberto Mielgo and for him it is a huge success as this film has managed to score an Oscar nomination this year, which could be a foundation for a lengthy career for the man. It runs for a quarter of an hour and in these 15 minutes it shows us several vignettes basically. It is a co-production between Spain and the United States and the language used most frequently here is English. A bit Romanian too I see now. Not sure where though. The homeless man? He was almost impossible to understand. But you don't need to to grasp the contents. Anyway, the film starts and (almost) ends in a slightly pretentious manner with the question asked "What is love?". I must say I could have done without the entire café segment there, but maybe it's just me. It wasn't horrible either, but added very little. The vignettes were more crucial and entertaining, of course the one about the man and woman in the supermarket using some dating app and creating an online match even while standing physically next to each other and then going on without writing or talking to each other. The absurdity of the digital world at full display you could say here. Funny, yet sad at the same time. I am not sure if this idea was entirely original or if something like this "joke" was done on previous occasions already. Probably. But no blame on Mielgo. The way he did it, also animated it was nice and it worked well and stayed in the mind.

With this film here, I think it was okay all the time pretty much, but the ending was quite good, a step up in quality, and for me the decisive aspect to eventually go for the positive rating and thumbs-up here. It was not the greatest year for animated shorts if we look at the nominees and I would say that I rank this third out of five, even if in other years it maybe would have landed on the last spot of my personal ranking. This is another one like three (maybe even four) of the nominees that you probably would not want to watch with your kids. It's animation for grown-ups, not only because of a woman being topless on a few occasions, but also in terms of the story and style and plot. If there is something like that. It feels a bit wild at times. This is definitely the one film from the nominees in which the characters look most like real people, actual humans. I think some segments even weren't animated at all. But apparently still enough for the film to be accepted into competition for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short. It's a truly close call, but overall I'd say that it deserves to be watched, even if I am not too curious about Mielgo's future projects. Maybe he can prove me wrong and deliver something superior to this alright work here. I would not be too happy if it wins the Oscar. Hopefully, it will be Aardman or the Russian entry, but my guess is Chile takes home the prize. The Windshield Wiper can be seen once and that is enough.

a gem

Warning: Spoilers
Obvious, you feel it more than a film about love. And more than animation . Slices of near reality, very familiar , very far by cliches, naked truths and forms of loneliness in something easy called as love. A great short film for admirable craft, for stories, in my case for the dialogue in Romanian about colors defining people and relation, powerful for suicidal scene but, especially, for the couple on the beach. Short, pure gem.

Excellent Oscarized Short competently directed by the Spanish Alberto Mielgo
ma-cortes29 March 2022
This is an exciting and colorful chronicle dealing with a deep reflection about the real love . Inside a Cafe Bar a middle-man is thinking about a thorny question : What's the love ? A series of brilliant set pieces and strange situations to answer his question. Along the way , revolving around various loving situations until the unexpected finale.

Magnificent Short developing interesting issues in a limited time , throughout a series of emotive scenes , a love story and including a sad suicide image, as well as strong love scenes . Eventually , all the disjointed scenes leading the brooding man to the desired conclusion, love is a secret society . It displays a nice soundtrack , adding some sensitive songs fitting to the atmosphere , such as : "We might be dead by tomorrow" written , performed by Soko , "When in Gloom" writen, performed by Lera Pentelute and "Pianillo Dos" written, performed by Alberto Mielgo .

This stunning Short was well written , directed and designed by Alberto Mielgo and all painting by Alberto Mielgo himself . This craftsman Alberto Mielgo is a good professional who has worked in various departments as Art Director , Animation Department , writer , producer in films as " Tron : uprising" series , "El Cid The Legend" , "Sinbad legend of the seven seas" , "Dragon Hill" , "The Pirates of Tortuga under Black Flag" , "Witness" and directing shorts as "Ubisoft Tipping Point : Watch Dog Legion" and "Love Death and Robots" . Rating : 7,5/10 . Above average .

Visually interesting. Story arc lacking.
cdc12329 March 2022
It makes you think "while" you're watching it but then you don't walk away with anything to discuss afterwards which is the real measure of success for any film. It's visually interesting for a variety of reasons that have to do with the colors, juxtaposition and editing. Love is ill defined and painful and risky . It's not a life affirming film that inspires you to take a chance on love unless you're wearing an Advanced Bomb Suit (ABS) like Jeremy Renner in "The Hurt Locker".

Thought Evoking
Neon_Gold8 February 2022
This is basically just a thought piece. It's like the creators brain tipped into a screen. On top of that it looks amazing. The shots, wow. Some of them are just perfect.

Literally writing this I'm just realising how much I actually loved it. Some of the scenes keep playing in my head, making me think and I think that is what makes a good film.

It was okay Warning: Spoilers
An okay short, with very nice visuals.

Some parts were a bit corny (Especially that cheesy monologue at the end about love being a "secret society") and it felt a little bit longer than it should have been, but it was a decent watch.

An amazing work of art. One of the best short films I've watched in my entire life.
patronusquill13 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
"Love". There has never been a more misunderstood, complex, hallucinatory, dangerous and rare word. Nothing else has made us feel joy and fear, confusion and pain, on the same level as love.

The Windshield Wiper is a short film by Spanish filmmaker Alberto Mielgo, who has worked on all kinds of projects such as "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse", "Corpse Bride", "Love, Death & Robots" and even in the visual effects of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1". From its first frame, it already invites us to give a 180 ° turn to traditional animation, which by convention is limited only to children.

In the short film we are shown different vignettes of content, narration, animation, voices, music and editing, which are based on personal aspects of the director's life: emptiness, love and relationships, and how these can influence our perspectives and longings, expectations and disappointments - a philosopher smoking in a cafe while listening to other people's talks about love, a tramp practicing catharsis with a mannequin, a suicidal woman gazing into the abyss, a couple sitting on a beach... two strangers looking for the love that's right next to them in a grocery store...

The entire short film is made up of color palettes opposed to the standard dark = bad, light = good, etc., giving its own and varied personality to the multitude of situations that, developed in more detail, could be one of the best love anthologies ever made.

To speak of The Windshield Wiper as a simple short film would be an insult. It is a work of art in which Alberto Mielgo stamped his essence, from the direction, to the script, the editing and the sound design itself.

Colourful brainstorm of ideas
briancham199425 September 2023
What is love? The central question of the film gets answered in the most unconventional ways possible, stretching our ideas of love beyond what films usually show. Instead of the typical exploration of connection, The Windshield Wiper's idea of love is in its antithesis - the denial or absence of connection. From thwarted internet matches to longings for people long gone, the seemingly unrelated vignettes visually emphasise the concept of love by portraying everything corollary to it. Love is defined as a yearning, an aftertaste, an end, an instability and more. The animation in this short is gorgeous and all the colourful distortions highlight all the heightened emotions of the experience of love.

Great Animation, Stupid Meaning
Jeremymlucas4 March 2022
Really liked the animation style, but the content alternates between "I'm 14 and this is deep," and "phones are bad" baby boomer nonsense. You can keep it.

Loved this movie. Creative and unique storytelling that only a brilliant mind like Alberto can translate through film. Highly recommend to anyone who is searching for the next thing in animation.

The Windshield Wiper
CinemaSerf22 March 2024
Whilst working his way through an entire pack of cigarettes, a man sits at a corner table in a café and ponders "what is love?". What follows is a series of romantic (and not so) scenarios in which people spend time together, search online for their ideal partner, imagine what life might be like were things different - and all augmented by the general chatter and conversation taking place around him. Some of that chatter is quite profound, some of it - well let's just say there's plenty of hot air in there, too - though that's not restricted to the physical venue: there's plenty of vacuous phone chat included too. There's one quite poignant scene featuring a text conversation that sees a semblance of commitment met with dots, then not. More dots then not, then a read receipt - LOL!! Is the grass always greener or might true love actually exist for any of those seeking it? Are they truly seeking it anyway? The animation styles alter a little from time to time and that adds a richness to this quite interesting look at what makes us tick, emotionally and sexually - and it's not always pleasing or enduring what emerges from our dalliances with "love".

Meh
PedroPires9012 March 2022
It would be fine for a art gallery, for a exposition about love, but...even if I loved the animation style, this doesn't have a lot to say and it isn't Oscars material.

Just some moments of love, told through some beautiful animation but makes you feel, why love is important and how complex it is to love aand be loved.
