Much improved over the first two from this series.
Sleepin_Dragon24 January 2019
The first two from this series I must admit I didn't enjoy, this one I thought signalled a definite improvement. Ruby last week had me wanting to switch off, this week, they toned her down, still a bit irritating at first, but I have a feeling she'll settle, and become more engaging. The slightly contrived disappearance of Florence allowed JP to take a senior role, and allowed Ruby to get more screen time. I have to admit, I loved JP in this episode, Tobi Bakare was terrific, and took it more seriously then the others, a very strong performance from him.

The basics were improved, the stumbling block here I thought was the story, which was just a little flat, and hard to believe somehow. I can't believe nobody would have spotted the body on the beach first thing in the morning, people go for early morning swims, people clean the beach, no way would that have happened.

I wasn't crazy about it, but it was pretty good. 6/10

Losing its sparkle?

Has the series run out of steam? The introduction of the new character Ruby is a huge mistake. Thankfully, she wasn't as annoying and unlikeable as her first episode last week, but I'm still having difficulty finding any redeeming quality to her. Her first outing had me fuming at the screen and had to watch the episode in several blocks as she was so irritating. So close to giving up on the show, and I've been a big fan from the word go. She brings nothing to the show. There's no rapport with the other characters. Every time she opens her mouth I get the impression the others hold their breath and count to 10 before responding. Tobi's character JP on the other hand, really shone this episode. with Florence only appearing for seconds before disappearing for a romantic weekend, JP really stepped up and did a fantastic job of acting detective.

Warning: Spoilers
A good episode again, with it being nice to see JP having a bit more to do.

The character of Ruby is thankfully toned down a little. I hope she continues to be, because her comedic style still stands out a mile amongst the rest of the team.

With a twist in the middle from the normal formula, this was good stuff.

Great insights into the glamor of travel shows

Warning: Spoilers
I like the behind-the-scenes look of TV shows, and this episode of Death in Paradise gives a bit of a jaundiced look behind a TV travel program. Here there are 2 deaths to solve, yes that's right, 2 deaths! One is linked to the other but not in the most obvious way.

I've long been a fan of Death in Paradise although unfortunately I haven't had the time to post IMDb reviews, but hopefully in these pandemic times I can catch up.

At times quite frustrating.

Warning: Spoilers
There is no doubt in my mind when saying:" The eighth season of Death in Paradise" has not been very good so far. "Murder on the Honore Express" was very disappointing, "Murder Most Animal", while better than the previous one, wasn't a great one either. Unfortunately "Wish You Weren't is yet another unimpressive entry of this great series. It's not a bad episode, but truly lacks something the previous seasons got so right.

Let's start with the good parts of the episode, shall we?

. The episode is beautifully shot and sounds great. The acting is good too. Kevin Doyle and Ron Cook do the best of the guest stars. Also, Tobi Bakare showed some real independence in this episode and I was really impressed with that. Shyko Amos' Ruby is not that annoying as she was the previous time too.

. There are some interesting ideas and twists in the script, which are well executed.

But good ideas do not make a great screenplay, because.....

. Most of the humor of this episode is unfortunately too absurd. The subplot about an animal called Sherman was, even though mildly entertaining, not as funny or interesting as it could have been.

. Also, the mystery was a huge let down here. There are times in this episode, where things are very unrealistic. For example: well- trained and professional paramedics, who took a look at the dead body, did not see a bruising on the victims neck. That's highly unlikely!

. The solution with Terry turning out to be the killer was not very believable too. The motive for the murders (love for the first victim) felt very last minute.

Overall, another frustrating watch.

Episode 8.3

The body of a dead television presenter is found on the beach.

It looks like an accidental drowning but some marks around her neck suggest murder.

Catrina McVey was on the island to film a travel show along with a production crew.

Jack Mooney thinks that someone from the production crew is the murderer. Soon another member of the crew is found dead.

New recruit Ruby has been toned down a bit but I fear a policewoman with a memory like a sieve is not destined to be not much cop.

I did think there were plenty of holes regarding the initial conclusions to the two deaths. The second death was regarded as a suicide, it was just an odd way to kill yourself on the bathroom floor like that.

At least Mooney acknowledged he was way off base. Maybe Mooney was sidetracked by the mongoose/polecat he acquired in the dominoes game.

Detective Logic is Weak

First, I have grown irritated with Ruby, the new cop. Her role seems to be entirely comic. She's to play the part of a fool and I don't like that a young girl is playing the incompetent. Second, I've grown annoyed at the "brilliant" conclusions that Jack comes up with. In this episode, he's certain the murderer was one of the four production crew. Why couldn't it have been some other tourist or a local? It reminds me of a famous investigation where ALL the questions were, "What was this guy doing?" and No One ever thought to ask the question, "Who shot the President?" And this is what I've been seeing in most of these episodes--grand god-like knowledge.

Time to retire

The show has lost its appeal. The major cast is 100% turnover now and Duane leaving has killed it Not much makes sense anymore, just silly
