Refreshing!
fqqzyhq16 October 2020
It was so refreshing to see a black woman experiencing these extraordinary events, typically reserved for white people. Although this show has tackled life in Jim Crow era America in a unique way its still exhausting to see black characters constantly fighting against it. It was so nice to step away from that for a moment. Up until this episode I felt like I was holding my breath, and this episode gave me space to exhale.

Through the Gates of the Silver Key
southdavid29 September 2020
This might seems a little hypocritical, but I didn't care for the diversion that made up the second half of this episodes as much as I did for episode six - which was essentially one long diversion from the overall plot.

Atticus (Jonathan Majors) and Leti (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) come to a conclusion about the dreams they've shared, that Hanna (Joaquina Kalukango) was carrying the book of names with her when she escaped the burning lodge. Atticus goes to look for that, whilst Leti stays with her sister, unaware that Ruby (Wunmi Mosaku) has been turned to the Braithwaite team. Hippolyta (Aunjanue Ellis) discovers the secrets of the Orrery - which lead her on a journey of self-discovery, through time and space.

Whilst I did like aspects of the afrofuturist odyssey that Hippolyta went on, it was stunning to look at and Aunjanue Ellis was great in it, I felt that it took up a lot of story real estate in a show that is ramping up to next week's finale. It's not that it was worthless, despite Hippolyta having been a relatively minor character so far, it's apparent that she is the most intelligent one in the story and this was presumably some necessary work for her to rediscover her self-worth and prove pivotal next week. It's more... I got it... and I got it fairly quickly, so one scene from each of her time/space jumps would have been enough. Especially as the show has, in past episodes, been wilfully neglectful when it comes to explaining some of its aspects.

Away from that half of the show, it was more positioning ahead of the finale, as Ruby apparently picks her side, Atticus gets confirmation of his fathers secrets and we discover a little more about how Christina's magic works and the fate of Dell from earlier in the season.

Performances have never been this shows problem, but storytelling has been. We'll see next week whether what we've been building towards is worthwhile.

I am Surprised
Roydsy_Reviews28 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Surprised it took them 39 min to devolve into the race baiting nonsense this show so desperately tries to push every episode. A new record for this show.

Really though, the only gripe about this episode was that the space amazon's fro wasn't big enough. I mean, how can she pack that hair in that space helmet? Must be some sort of 'TARDIS' situation.

People giving this episode a 10/10 are on some good drugs. Please let me know what they are in your next 10/10 review episode for this show. Cheers.

One of the top 5 tv episodes I've ever seen.
jenniferbga4 November 2020
I had to scroll through a lot of clueless white boys' complaints to find my fellow "I Am" fans. I thought I had to be dreaming up this episode because no way could there be anything this lovely on tv in 2020, could there? But "damn, it feels real," and joyous, and angry, and I loved it. I second all the other 10-star writers' more specific comments about it thus far: a lovely tribute to Black women, a breath of fresh air, and all the rest.

A beautiful love letter to black woman
rodrigues-3918911 October 2020
This episode was perfect. For those that watch the show for the storyline alone will not enjoy this episode as it has an incredibly deeper message and tone rather than focusing on the storyline solely. I loved it!

Amazing
kedavien-1453128 September 2020
This episode was like a love letter to black women. I feel it came out during a perfect time considering what is going on in the world, and what Megan Thee Stallion is going through. The most disrespected person in America is truly the black woman. I don't really have any complaints toward the episode. However, I was expecting the show to progress a bit more I was hoping to see Leti and Ruby talk more and Leti find out Ruby knows about magic now. I'm looking forward to the last 3 episodes, I hope they're good!

What were they thinking?
tristanbaker28 September 2020
Truly baffled how anyone could have enjoyed that episode. The SFX was corny, the writing was so on the nose you can't help but role your eyes, and finally the episode added absolutely zero plot development to the series as a whole.

I AM ... uninterrupted
cdenisestes10 October 2020
This was my favorite episode. It spoke on so many levels of how women shrink themselves to be everything to their families and lose themselves in the process. Hippolyta is finally living her life on her terms uninterrupted.

Amazing!
darksun-945-81349821 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode captures you. It shows the power of womanhood unleashed. Black woman at her most potent. Stop shrinking yourself, hiding from the world. In this act, you do yourself a disservice, and the world no favors.

"Name yourself!" And be!

As a full on heterosexual man, I still felt every millisecond of this episode. If you didn't, you're either dead inside, or too dumb to understand what you were seeing.

Most Beautiful
williamguilfoyle28 September 2020
This is by far the most beautiful and epic science-fiction episode of Lovecraft Country. They did such a good job on this one. We got to go all over the place both inward and outward.

Excellent!
jecasa-4745329 September 2020
Beautiful.. Why ppl hate this is beyond me. But it seems like a trend to do so as soon as it gets in to peoples rights, feminism etc.

Someone here wrote that this episode have to had been written by females, why, Id like to think so! Geniuses! You dont need to be black nor a woman to absolutely feel what she is feeling in this episode. Who havent felt lost of whom one is and what path one should take.. And a longing for absolute tranqililling freedom.

Nah, haters gonna hate. Unless you have a problem with feminism you gonna love this.

Lovecraft ?
bernardoaraujo30 September 2020
Does this have ANYTHING to add to the series AT ALL ? Come on, just add up 30 more minutes and sell it as an independent movie, but don't sell it as part of a series. This is some serious BS.

Weak
bene-71-1405441 October 2020
I've loved this show so far! It's not perfect, but it's had some great stuff. This episode was just weak. Basically no progression in the storyline, and TERRIBLE acting from the supporting characters. I feel like this episode did sci-fi dirty.

Brilliant hour of sci-fi
gwilli-9926228 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So, I was pretty tough in this show over the course of the first few episodes. From the beginning, it's still held my interest, and kept me coming back week after week, but with the past three or so episodes, I find this has become a show that I genuinely look forward to every week. They've just been getting better and better, in my opinion. I was not prepared for how this one played out. It started off fairly run of the mill, but a little ways in, turned into just such a fantastic science fiction story. Some will still maintain that this isn't Lovecraft, but I don't think that's ever been the direction of the show. I've never read the books, but from what I've seen, this is more of an exploration into a dark chapter in history mixed with fantastic science fiction. I started this show somewhat cynical, and have become a genuine fan. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Great Episode About Self-Discovery and -Value
tjosephubert-8661929 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Don't believe some reviewers when they say "this is the worst episode of anything ever" - please, judge it for yourself. Truthfully, this episode was intimate and sweet and it felt like a relief from the oppressiveness of the episode before it. Anyone who said this was bad writing did not delve deeper to find the meaning of its metaphor. The episode is about self discovery, facing one's demons and overcoming them to become something more. It is an powerful truth conveyed through mystifying VFX and parallels.

Enjoy it.

This episode made no sense. Feels disconnected to the series and I'm just watching it because I'm waiting for new episodes of the Boys and Raised by wolves.

Finally it's picking up!
ekmohlin28 September 2020
Loved this episode - strange fantasy, "whatabout-ish". How many have not wanted that oppertunity "say your name and what you are". Wonderful. And the story gets more Lovecraftian as well.

I can understand if young men don't like this. It IS focused on black females, but live with that. How many movies have I watched that takes he standpoint of a young white male?

Im white, female and 59 years old, if you wonder.

Possibly one of the best episodes on TV in the last decade.
Grey_rainbow28 September 2020
The episode was a fantastic experience. It's deep and has quite an imaginative sci-fi/sci-fantasy travel. The episode demonstrates that the mundane, plebeian stereotypes in the popular culture (like middle aged family centered housewife) exist because the content creators lack imagination. Now more than ever I am looking forward to the next episodes.

Why the negative reviews? Oh yeah, we all know why.
nybbles3 March 2021
This show is amazing! This episode is powerful. The negative reviews are too small minded. This isn't the average scifi fantasy. It's impactful social commentary and thought provoking. I am more and more impressed with each episode. This isn't a show that you can sit passively back and be spoon fed. Maybe that's part of why some people have issues with it. That and the fact that it presents discomforting moments. Instead this is what I love best about scifi and fantasy. That it takes you out of the ordinary context to present ideas in an extraordinary way. It's a great journey if you give yourself over to it.

Lovecraft is not only about monsters and curses
joaogabriel300618 January 2022
To be honest, people who think this episode has no place in a Lovecraftian vision have not read enough of Lovecraft.

Although Lovecraft has more flare with its hereditarian curses and fleshblobs of monsters, Lovecraft also includes cosmic and other worlds / multiple-dimensions.

There are several tales of H. P. which focuses on more "fantasy" side of things, such as the tale of a singer who searches for his lost birthplace, or the "madman" who dreams of fantastic landscapes...

This episode fitted perfeclty in my opinion in this Lovecraft-like piece of art. It is a true love letter to black culture and offered some of the strongest catarsis with it's "redemption" arch that showed us some quality character development.

This is my first public review, and the reason for it is that I realized this was one of the worse reviewed episodes of the series.

Oh well, people need to have more imagination!

This episode devolved into a worthless rewrite or dreck that I've ever been subjected to - although the message is valid, the content is horrible
