Enjoyable and fun look at education through the years
chrisgallen-0762224 January 2019
Having watched the first four episodes I have found this to be both interesting and entertaining. Covering a decade each week is only allowing a skim of the periods and obviously the further you go back the less relatable it is. However the kids are fun (and not in the least entitled or thugs). They are smart and sometimes exasperated by the restrictions children faced (particularly girls) even fifty years ago. I for one appreciate how far we have come in the last fifty years and it's good that the young both question and challenge the unfairness of society. While all of the kids are likeable the girls really star as they take enjoyment in things they probably don't do today (typing, needlework etc.) while realising that they have broader horizons than any children in education in the past one hundred years. I'm really enjoying this programme.

I quite liked this but.......

If I had a penny for every time one of the kids used the filler word 'like', I'd be able to retire to my own private island in the Caribbean and be waited on hand and foot.

1960's inaccurate.

I went to a comprehensive school in the 60's and it bore no resemblance to what was in the programme. We focused far more on the sciences and most classes were mixed. School dinners were cooked and served on-site by "dinner ladies" not by other pupils. The boys did do one lesson a week in metal or woodwork while they girls did needlework or typing. No farm work, no bricklaying, although the latter would have been useful at times. Nuclear war was never mentioned and driving was not on the curriculum at any school in the area. Makes me wonder about the accuracy of the other episodes. Use your own judgement.

Was this supposed to be history or comedy?

Those terrible people in the past were really strange! Let's laugh as them? About as much to do with decent history as the Magic Roundabout was to do with art appreciation. No one even tried to enter into it. No one tried to understand what it was like to live in the past. I like Sara Cox for what she does but she looked really awkward in this. Sorry I only have it 1/10 as I couldn't give it less.
