A Surfeit of Birbs
owen-watts5 September 2022
Ewan MacGregor narrates this charming Scottish nature documentary of the wildlife around the Shetland Islands across a year. The real draw of the documentary is the beautifully characterful otters, who have a tense on-going family saga that runs through the birb-heavy vignettes. Now I like a birb, but there was a lot of birbs. Birbs. Interspersing this gentle interplay between the tubby mammals and aforementioned birbs was an occasional brief stab of tourist-board-friendly island life. Incongruously you'd see a man making a boat or a load of people dressed as vikings and then as if you'd dreamt it, back to the birbs.
