Choice of actresses
RedRose2209 September 2019
I would have given 10 stars, but had a problem with the actress they chose for Heaven. She did not do well in this role and was a poor substitute for the younger Heaven. Very good movie and I cried at the end. The actress playing Annie did an excellent job!

A horror thriller diversion
phd_travel23 August 2019
The story isn't as good as the others. It's a bit of a horror thriller diversion with a Misery story. Heaven's orphaned daughter is the central character. After her parents die in an accident she is paralysed and kept captive by Tony her Great Grandfather. Still some icky sibling or not stuff going on. The main actress reminds of Elizabeth Moss.

reboot
SnoopyStyle17 May 2020
Drake is grown up. Heaven (Johannah Newmarch) wants to leave Farthinggale Manor in the past. She is still hiding the family secrets from her daughter Annie (Lizzie Boys) who is turning 18. Annie loves her 'brother', Fanny's son Luke, who is moving away to college. Heaven and Logan are killed in a car crash. Annie is crippled and taken in by Tony Tatterton (Jason Priestley) who hires Drake to run the toy factory. Miss Broadfield (Daphne Zuniga) is the cruel nurse who intends to isolate Annie as Tony gets more disturbed and tells her self-serving lies.

This feels like a reboot as it introduces a new generation. Most of the previous actors are gone except for Priestley in old man makeup. Lizzie Boys is pretty good and who doesn't want Daphne Zuniga. After a quick story push, it basically becomes Misery. In a way, it is different than V.C. Andrews' writing. She often dealt with incest but this one undoes an incestuous relationship. It's also a much more simplified story and it is better for the movie's sake. The simplicity allows the story to breathe. It is rebooting in the good sense of the word.

Just when you thought it couldnt get worse

Warning: Spoilers
Someone said "hold my beer". This was the worst movie out of the series. Everything was rushed and watered down. There was no significant character development. They completely skipped Annie living with Fanny and Luke which was pretty important to the story of Annie and Luke's relationship. They also failed to include Annie's relationship with Troy develope and it was a complete climatic let down to anyone who has read the books. I really wish they would stop butchering these amazing stories.

The worst movie in the series... so far
taylornan090919 August 2019
I have watched and enjoyed all of the prequels but I did not enjoy this one at all. Hated that Annalise Basso did not play Heaven in this one. Lizzie Boys that played Heaven's There was really nothing about this movie that made sense to me.

Terrible acting
jrpereyra-4647625 August 2019
It's hard to watch. The characters of Heaven and Fanny that developed in the first two movies are bad fillers in this one. The acting is painful to watch.

Book Four: Hair Color Still Matters
mweaver-3347418 August 2019
Same issues I've had the the previous films, strayed too far from the book. They seem to have missed a key element: Leigh, Heaven and Annie are supposed to look alike except for their hair. This explains Tony's obsession/confusion because he sees them all as one woman. Troy: his character was butchered. He was supposed to help Annie walk and contact Fanny and Luke to rescue her. The whole movie was rushed and jumbled. I wish they would stick to the wonderful source material

Finally They Get It Right...
Falconeer2 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
After the hysterical failures that were the first 3 films in this mournful series, it was a miracle that I, or anyone would still be around for part IV. Prepared for another hilarious train wreck, I was shocked to find that "Gates of Paradise" is worlds better than anything that came before it, on so many levels. It becomes apparent almost immediately that the acting in this one is actually professional, and doesn't feel like watching a high school play. It's a miracle. The actress who plays Annie offers a realistic, natural performance, and she doesn't appear "embarrassed" to be involved in this project. Everything here is new and unfamiliar to anyone following the series, but only for the first few moments. Soon we accept the older versions of Heaven and the rest, mainly because these actors are SO much better than the ones they replaced. We are also introduced to the teenage version of Luke Jr. played by Keenan Tracey, who is so immensely likable, and genuinely attractive, and after looking at the lifeless, pasty faced Logan and Tom in the previous installments, seeing an actual flesh and blood, sexy male lead is very refreshing. Luke's character, although not given enough screen time, is very pivotal to the story, as the connection of the two siblings, half brother and sister Annie & Luke, is the heart of this movie. And the threat that history will repeat itself for this new generation of Casteels, is the real draw to the entire story. Once Annie is ensconced within the formidable walls of Farthingale Manor, "Gates of Paradise" really takes off. Jason Priestley is back as an older Tony, and his performance here is astoundingly improved from the earlier movies, where he made an absolute fool of himself. It seems like the (obviously more competent) new director cared enough about this project to pull ol' Jason aside and direct him to tone down his jerky, spastic performance as the evil, creepy Tony, which is exactly what directors are SUPPOSED to do; DIRECT their actors. This time Priestley nails it, and Tony Tatterton goes from being a joke, to becoming a genuinely sick and controlling sociopath. Honestly I have never seen a performer redeem himself so effectively before. And while on the subject of sick and controlling sociopaths.....two words; Daphne. Zuniga. Wow, what a delight it was seeing the return of Zuniga, a staple of many 80's cult classics like "The Sure Thing' and "Modern Girls," as the evil Nurse Broadfield! Rivaling Louise Fletcher's evil Grandmother in the original "Flowers in the Attic," Zuniga appeared to be having a blast playing this venomous "angel of death,' violently harpooning Annie with the giant hypodermic, and at one point lacing her food with a laxative and then HIDING HER WHEELCHAIR, just to "teach her a lesson." Yes, the heroine of "Gates of Paradise" is actually confined to a wheelchair throughout the film's running time, and this makes everything all the more terrifying for this girl, as she is completely at the mercy of some very sinister people while having no idea what is going on! I also need to mention how nice it was to see the character of 'Rye Whiskey' make an appearance, after being totally forgotten from the other movies. Best of all, this movie even offers a perfectly satisfying "final scene," concerning Annie and Luke,' that is so sweet and quite beautiful, and made the task of sitting through the first awful three movies, worth the effort. Out of the darkness and into the light, like Dante's Trilogy through Hell, and Purgatory, and emerging...in Paradise; hence the title, "Gates of Paradise." This might sound like quite an exagerated description of a Lifetime movie, but it's the only way i can describe how much fun I had watching this thrilling little horror drama, and what a complete surprise it was, considering everything that came before it. "Gates of Paradise" is the first movie based on a V.C. Andrews book that succeeded in actually feeling like it's source material. In fact, this one is a bit reminiscent of "Flowers In the Attic,' with Annie being similar to Cathy, locked in the attic, at the mercy of the Grandmother, here replaced by the equally cruel and formidable nurse. Whether the prison is an attic, or a wheelchair, that sense of hopeless lack of control is still there. Yeah, this is the BEST of the series, and i have renewed hope for "Web of Dreams."

Really poor guess at what the author would have wanted
billsoccer22 September 2019
This was written supposedly in the style of the books author, but I believe failed miserably. They replace the actors we'd become accustomed to and keep Jason Priestly - who cannot act - in his role! And the story line stank. The only saving grace was the access who portrays Annie

The worst of the series
juzntez18 July 2022
I too, like most of the viewers didn't like the choice of actors playing Heaven and Logan. It would've been better having the original cast including the original Fanny.

This is definitely the worst episode out of the series. It was like a mix of Misery and Fiona Dourif in the chucky movies!

Too much focus on Annie and didn't enjoy the tone of step father Tony's disgusting thoughts and actions. That could've been portrayed better and not so vile.

Sick and horrendous
janettelthurley12 November 2021
It is absolutely disgusting to have a storyline that romanticizes incest.

Shame on all involved: you are absolutely clueless.

There are sick pedos out there watching this and feeling vindicated for the horrors they have inflicted on children.

No
bevo-1367815 October 2021
Did they try to get a different person to play the title character and slip her in as if no one would notice? You might get away with that on home and away but surely not on a Tele series.
