So Much Fun
tristan_1924 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode focused on two of Westworld's best characters : Maeve and Bernard. The opening sequence was crazy, maybe one of the best in the entire series and Hector's comeback was powerful. I also really liked how they integrated Lee Sizemore and Ashley Stubbs in that one, helping the protagonists in their respective quests.

The showrunners really know what they're doing developing these little twists. The main ideas of the episode were simple, but effective : Maeve trying to escape, as Bernard is trying to find her. Direction was amazing, the music even more. The two combined procured an engaging motion effect.

Despite being extra clever throughout the entire episode, Maeve ends up in a predicament in the end and the showrunners know how to bring the audience at this very point masterfully. I also liked how Maeve was brought from Warworld to another world, only to discover this current world is being filled with war itself.

Trouble isn't over yet ! Setting up an exciting season with Dolores, Caleb, Maeve, Bernard and co.

I was really amazed by this episode. One of my favourites for sure.

Amazing.

5 out of 5 stars.

Another mind bending episode. A lot to pack in with the story. And twists that is awesome. Concept does add a twist with WWII setting thrown in. The episode follows Maeve trying to discover her new setting. And Bernard trying to find Maeve. There is a few cool action sequences. New directions thats awesome. I cant wait to see where it goes next. There is a cool reference to another series. Which fans will understand with the cameos. Which is fun to see without reading spoilers.

What's the square root of -1?
XweAponX23 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's an impossible equation, and if you want your calculator to divide by zero error, punch it in and watch what happens. That's part of the premise of this episode, which returns us to Westworld, excuse me Naziworld. Or actually French resistance world. We know that BernArnold was going to go back to Westworld, this episode gives us a clear picture on what reentry into the Park would look like. At least if you are going to sneak back and go to the old cabin where Ford had you kill Theresa. And where all of your previous host bodies are stored...

Including one host that we discover is a host that we never knew was a host, but we suspected it from the last episode of season two, as Dolores was using a host shaped like Charlotte Hale to escape, while smuggling out about five or six other host control units. Some of the people who worked at Westworld have cameos in this episode...

And of course Maeve is in the new "war world", which actually doesn't exist, or does it? So when you are trying to figure out what is real or not, that's when you punch in "The square root of -1" to bug up the works. Sidenote: "the square root of negative one" refers to imaginary numbers used in rectangular to polar coordinate conversions, which are basically used in electronics to design crossover filters for speaker cabinets, but it can be used for many other things. It's basically a way to represent an electronica circuit on an XY axis where there are both negative and positive numbers. Isn't that fun? (actually, it is...)

This whole episode is a conundrum. This is why I loved season two, but the level of insanity has been trebled in season three. Meanwhile, Rehoboam is keeping tabs on anomalies in the world, and guess where this episode's anomaly occurs? We get a possible physical location of where Westworld is. I wonder if I could look it up on Google earth? I'm not even finished watching the episode, I had to stop and react. This is why Maeve has always been my favorite host. And she gets to reconnect with Lee Sizemore, of a sort. More to come, maybe...

Look for a reference to Game of Thrones, a big reference, although not as big as it was in the last episode of that series....

Turning a pocket inside-out, there is a universe inside.
akomapochuff23 March 2020
Does the episode really deserve a 10? probably not.

But Its episodes like this.. Just like "Kiksuya" (The telling of Akecheta and the Ghost Nation's journey to consciousness) when the show just goes nice and deep. Makes you think, and executes it with the kind of skillful-means that gives you the impression they have a team of philosophers and hackers giving them council as they wrote the episode. Otherwise as a philosopher and hacker I would have found the attempt cool, but laughable as such things are often expressed in media. And as such it will not be a "10" for everyone, since the nuances may be missed.

So once again, its probably not objective 10/10, for its not perfect, but I live for episodes like this, so its a 10 out of 10 to me in particular, aka subjectively. Excellent.

Aaaaand we're back with the ridiculous and unnecessary convoluted plot complexities
Top_Dawg_Critic24 March 2020
Did the writers forget the majority of viewer's and critic's complaints over previous season's convoluted plot complexities?

Dear writers, you're only giving us 8 episodes this season, make them count and rid us of the dumb plot and technical issues. Let us enjoy the ride. Aside from the useless point of the wartime park, try harder to close the ridiculous plot holes you're trying to hide with so-called intellectual writing. Episode 1 this season was the smoothest and funnest of them all... stick to that modus operandi. We want more substance and less fluff in the upcoming episodes.

Visually stunning and mindblowing
ruwimalpathiraja11 April 2020
Season three started off on the right foot (unlike a certain pair we get to see at the end of the episode) and this carries on the great work.

The Nazi occupation of a war-torn Italy was bizarrely realistic, and the work that must have gone into replicating a genuine World War 2 effect must be applauded.

Westworld is back to business as usual with its classic mindbending twists and we get a big one this time. Can't wait to see where this leads.

This episode must've been prepared or finished before the absolute mess that was the last season of Game of Thrones. That or somebody over there is one dedicated troll.

I question the reality of this episode...
Jac2196118 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This show has proven to be at the level of storytelling similar to Game of Thrones and True Detective, in that it is about the quality of writing that make the show worthy of watching, as well as the characters (ignore final season of Game of Thrones). This episode was uncharacteristic of the previous episode, which was phenomenally done and proved to me the show has not lost momentum. However, The Winter Line was weak and the writing was lazy and it was an upsetting watch. I kept cringing during some scenes, especially the fight choreography between Stubbs and the men trying to kill Bernard (he is beating up one guy who shot him but the other bad guy, who has a gun mind you, does not shoot his weapon at him and keeps hesitating and then gets beat up himself...like he didn't know what to do). Then he comes across more bad guys with guns with simply a battle axe and they don't think to shoot him. So cringe and I can't get it out of my head. The series better not be heading down the road of handing work to whoever, especially those unfaithful to the powerful writing and direction of the show b/c this episode was a mistake. It played off like some silly little romance novel with a bit of espionage. And what was up with that Game of Thrones reference? Please don't sacrifice the quality of this show for something as stupid as a reference.

back to the park, love the twists, Mave, back to the game
gemoktupos23 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As a young adolescence, it seems to me the first episode is more interesting and futuristic than this one. But I have to say watching through Mave's attempts to figure out the truth, makes this episode far more complex than the previous one. I can tell the reappearace of Game of Thorne in parts of this episode, the dragon in the park. It seems to be that this episode leads to similar story line like Game of Thrones. Hope they will not make any mistake like they did on the last season of Game of Throne.

Cringe, until you realize they are...

SHATTERING THE 4TH WALL!

The cameo from GOT creators and the dragon are not there just for fan service, this show is going really hard into a Matrix direction, simulation within a simulation? Yes! They are telling you everything is a lie, Season 1 had several references to The Truman Show and now they are expanding that. There were a lot of cringe moments but with the concept the show is bringing to the table it doesn't matter anymore. The joke is on you... the show has always been metaphorical to real life situations such as gov spying on you, NSA, Facebook etc... and they are now blatantly showing you all the many layers on a massive scale, basically Black Mirror Bandersnatch but directed towards our real world and lives. Watchmen also had a bunch of metaphors like that. I think it's pretty cool but kinda scary too when you really think about it.

Thoroughly Enjoyable
jay193023 March 2020
Only a few TV shows are able to keep me on the edge of seat, hands away from my phone and eyes glued to my screen. This is one of them. The story is so intriguing and ever-evolving, brilliant. Every episode offers something different.

They should put this episode as season premiere, 100% Improvement over the first episode in every regard! Dialogues were smart and captivating, actors had time to evolve their characters. Cinematography.... just pure perfection. Technical and beautiful. I also liked Stubbs character having more things to do.

Meh...
tobe_199123 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Season 1 was great. Season 2 thought itself as smart and was a mess. Season 3 looks like a worse version of the 2nd. Continuation of Mary Sues, "smart" storylines wich don't make sense and departing from the characters' arch. Because if you're left with Hosts, your characters can't have heart, can they? They are perfect, and when not it's to convenience of the plot, you can get attached to characters that can't really die.

The nail in the coffin was the Dumb & Dumber scene. It was the middle finger from HBO to the viewers, and it was cringe to watch. I'm so happy I've never paid an HBO subscription and I download its content instead. It's not illegal in my country so it's OK, I'm subverting their expectations, aM i NoT?

better than first episode , but the season is weak at the core
khaledrimawi25 March 2020
This episode brought us back to WestWorld vibes, but the plot for this season is very weak , the show just turned to Terminator. I am a really big fan of this show and it's very disappointing. I miss how this show was very strong in the first season.

It was more time wasted in repeated plot. Only towards the end does it get interesting. Comeon fellas, the potential for better story is enormous.

Plot holes again, same as S03E01
0w020 April 2020
Overall a nice episode but there's small plot holes like this that spoil it:

In the episode a guy has not one, but TWO guns each with 50 bullets, and yet he chooses to take on 5 armed guards with an axe! In addition to that, Bernard AND the other guy with him don't hide themselves at all, and that makes them end up in a lot of trouble... also, Maeve is supposed to be hyper-intelligent, yet when she takes over the robot, instead of just controlling ALL the robots in the facility and basically decimating all the humans in there with the robots, she just ends up getting destroyed because she only controlled that one robot... those three things make very little sense and kinda spoiled an otherwise good episode.

Observations
tindalllisa5 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I find the story more interesting outside the park, but it is always a pleasure to have Thandie Newton on my screen. The f/x during the shootout in the square was remarkable. I was invested in the droid Maeve chose to liberate her. I like how she struggled to get up the hill. Ciroc's home was stunning. He chose to dress Maeve in White. I liked his comment calling humanity a band of thugs stumbling from catastrophe to catastrophe. It pained me to see Maeve under someone else's control again.
