Fantastic capture of the books essence
12 February 2017
I have been appalled by the way this movie is trashed both by the professional reviewers and by people on IMDb.

You might not like the movie, but to give it one out of ten is just a "haters" gesture. Like you had already decided to hate the movie in advance (or rated it without even seeing it like some here on IMDb even writes they have done!)

I really enjoyed the books, and maybe it will help a lot having read the books (and understood where Christian Grey is from in his upbringing), but still I cannot see how such a complete movie can be reviewed so bad by someone actually contemplating what they have just seen, fairly. A could understand a 4-5 for sure if you disliked the movie, but 1/10 is so clearly just because of hate for the genre and the success of the franchise.

The movie follows the book closely, and although the sex scenes do not take up much of the movie, there are plenty of them as must be expected. What they show is the kind of kinky sex described in the book, but without any explicit sex scenes, that has not already appeared in many other movies. But they show what that very important part of their relationship is, and that it is more than just "vanilla" sex, something not so often shown in other films.

But also the emotional scenes in the movies are very strong, especially when Christian again fears he will be loosing Anastasia and goes completely blank on the floor in front of her.

And there are plenty of action with a bad guy going after both of the main characters, a crazy ex-sub and Mrs. Robinson perfectly personified by Bassinger.

Maybe it is because I felt the reviews have been unfair, that I have given it a 10 rather than a 9? But I just had a great experience watching the movie in the cinema with my wife, and would have hated missing it because I had listened to the hateful reviews.

So if you enjoyed the books, then forget all these negative reviews and go watch a great movie. Can't wait for the last part next year. :-)

Boring, way too long and I did not at all get involved with the characters
10 February 2016
Having just watched Iñárritu previous and fantastic movie Birdman again, and knowing this film was nominated for 12 Oscars my expectations was very high, despite the fact that the trailer made the movie look boring. I thought it was just a bad trailer. But no; this long long movie is boring from start to finish, and when the movie ends I could not care less who lived or died, so even in the grand finale I did not really care how the movie ended. I'm so disappointed. I really hope it will not get any Oscars, and feel so sad that a great actor like DiCaprio probably receives an Oscar for a part, where most of his lines are grunts, instead of for one of the many great movies he has made prior to this one. But I guess he will win because he deserved to have an Oscar already, and this is how the Oscar often goes when great actors have been overlooked.

Feel good movie - a modern version of Indiana Jones?
31 January 2005
As I had read in other reviews on this page I felt that National Treasure was a good way to spend two hours, without demanding too much of you, but nevertheless giving you a happy feeling.

It is not a deep movie in any way, and neither tries to be. But it is fun, there is lots of action and there are riddles and plot turns etc.

If you liked Indiana Jones (and who doesn't?) then you will also be able to like this one. It is not as original, but it is a great update of the Indy adventures set in the pre WW2 area to our days. Cause you need a great idea to make a realistic adventure and treasure hunt in the present USA. And it works.

Go see it, and have a great time.

Nice way to show what children feels and knows
25 January 2002
This short animation movie shows in a fine way what children feels about death. It's nice to hear when they see there grandparents in the clouds or has a nice fantasy about a nice God up in a heaven where you can play football. Less nice to hear of children loosing a little brother, having cancer - thinking about if they want to stay alive or loosing their pet animals. However, it is all part of life and death and belongs in the movie.

In my opinion the best thing about the movie, is that the end shows a child saying that she really doesn't think to much about death, since she still have so much time to live. Well, she of course wont know how long she has left, but children should know about death, not use to much time thinking about it, and that is to me a good point. 8/10!

Too long, too dark, too boring, too much!
14 January 2002
Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILERS*

This was just not what I needed. The most depressive film I might ever have seen. Not one single person has a moment of real joy in this film. Everyone is miserable, even those, like Malkovich, who enjoys making the life's of other miserable. There is no consolation to find anywhere, and the end only leaves me thinking about who of the characters are going to commit suicide. There are at least five that I can think of. It's dark and depressing all the way, and strange jumps takes us around in the Lady's life. Take for example this: Kidman gets a child, who dies within a year, however, this happens while the film jumps three year ahead, that is from a year before to a year after the birth/death. Hey! If this is a portrait of a life, this must have been one of the most important and devastating experience, and therefore very important to tell about. But no...

I'm sure this film is true to the book, but the movie is nothing like the fine Piano of the same director. 4 out of 10.

The worst movie I have seen in a cinema
3 July 2001
Well the reason for seeing it in the cinema was that it was a sneak preview, else I would never have seen this terrible teenage slasher movie. I mean haven't we had enough of this yet? Scream and Scary Movie at least did not take them self serious! The plot sucks, and the acting is the worst I've seen. (Only Godzilla can compare, which is also the only movie that competes in being the worst I've seen in the cinema with this one.)

There is so many plot holes in the story, and the girls are so alike, that you don't even now who has been killed, and who has not. (and you don't care.) The only of them I knew in advance was Denise, and she was the most talent less actress I have ever seen in this bad excuse for a movie.

Stay as far away from this movie as possible. (2/10)

Hannibal (2001)

Macabre Hannibal.
23 February 2001
Yesterday I saw Anthony Hopkins in his glamorous part as Hannibal the Cannibal Lector. It was very entertaining, very bloody, very disgusting and very different. But was it good? Not good enough! First of all I'm missing Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling. All credit to Julianne Moore who is probably the Hollywood actress that has the closest resemblance with Jodie Foster, however, she is not the real thing. Secondly the psychological game between her and Hannibal is not even close to being that intense as in the predecessor. Third it is a sequel and we can't help comparing to the now classic horror movie Silence of the Lamb, which inevitable will leave us disappointed.

I will neither recommend or discourage anyone from seeing it. Rather I will ask them to find out if they think a brilliant doctor (MD), with lust for bizarre murders and sometimes cannibalism, would be able to do things to other humans, that you might not enjoy seeing very explicit on the big screen? Because this is a fourth point where the first movie was better. It really did not show all the nasty stuff that happens very clearly, while in Hannibal we almost see everything, and then a little more in each of the four most disgusting scenes. To me it is so far fetched, that I couldn't really take it seriously, which meant that the movie never got under my skin, like the first movie did. Instead I was amused/enjoying the macabre details, that you would only expect to find in movies like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and not in a movie with a Oscar winning actor and nominated actress in the lead, directed by an at present Oscar nominated director, for his last movie Gladiator (12 nominations): Ridley Scott.

But if you think you can stand the gore, then have a friend for dinner, enjoy him and a good Chianti, before going to see Hannibal! Fzfzfzfzfzfzfz. (7/10)

Sucks!
23 February 2001
Not much to say about this. The acting sucks, the story sucks, there is no plot, and even the hero is a b****rd. The most funny thing about it, is that all the other actors has been picked to be even uglier than Stallone, so he actually looks pretty compared to them. This goes for both the good and the bad guys. Then again there are no good guys in this movie.

Listen to my warning: Do not see this flop.

Masterpiece!
24 September 2000
Dancer in the Dark moved me deeply. It's a tragic story with very few uplifting moments during the "normal" film. But then the musical begins inside Selma's head and everything becomes full of color and dancing. These beautiful songs, written and performed to perfection by Björk, are the moments where your heart is allowed to relax during this terrible story. Especially the song at the factory where the machines makes the rhythm of the music and the train song filmed with a hundred cameras all over the place are breathtaking.

I also really enjoyed that Selma is rehearsing for the part as Maria in the musical The Sound of Music. This is one of the most happy musicals of all time - and also one of the best. But it almost broke my heart when Selma is trying to cheer herself up by singing "These are a few of my favorite things" at the time when she is in the greatest despair, with tears running down her cheeks almost not able to sing the next word. At that time the tears was also running down my cheeks. Because how can it be possible to turn this cheerful song into one of the most heartbreaking moment of any movie I have ever seen?

Only a director like Lars von Trier would be able to pull a stunt like that. Just the idea of making a sad musical today is fantastic. But to persuade Björk to both write and compose the music, play Selma and perform the music in the film is fantastic. It has not been easy to make this film. we have heard about all the trouble between Björk and Lars. However, when you see the film you understand why. Björk is not acting the part of Selma - she is Selma. For an inexperienced actress that must have been very hard, and no wonder if she had some very rough times during filming. She did it beautiful, and deserved the prize for best actress at Cannes, as Lars deserved the Golden Palms. Who other than him, would dare to let the movie begin with five minutes of blank screen with nothing but music before the title comes on the screen?

It is truly one of the great film which you will either love or hate, but you can't sit through it without getting affected one way or the other. That is a quality in itself. (10 out of 10).

"In a musical nothing dreadful ever happens" Selma.

Not much to say; There is no worse way to waste one and a half our.
28 August 2000
This is ultimately the worst movie I have ever wasted my time on. I only saw it, because I heard so many say that it was the most terrible movie ever to come out of Denmark. And boy they where right. Less than 800 people went to see it in the cinema, and most of these had received the tickets for free. It was bad enough on TV, but it most have been terrible on the big screen. I have read that the two leads Tim and Gordon really have regretted this movie, and publicly have called it a bad decision. I can understand that. The plot? The acting? The cinematography? It is not so much that it is bad, it is horrible.

I'm only happy that I knew what to expect, so it did not come as a surprise. 1 out of 10. (But only because you cannot vote ½)

Can't people see that this movie sucks?
9 August 2000
I don't understand, why all the comments for this movie is positive. I can see that the average vote is low (5.4), so most people don't like it. It's to slow and drags every scene to infinity, mostly because it wants to run for two hole hours with a plot as thin as a piece of paper.

The acting is nothing special and there are several characters you don't believe in. You never get involved in these peoples troubles, and it doesn't touch you whether they live or die.

I give it as much as 4 out of 10 because there are a few moments where it is not boring, and Madeleine Stowe is always worth to watch, not for her acting skills though.

A nice little movie
19 July 2000
I saw this movie, because I'm a big fan of the produced Clint Eastwood. I did not expect too much though, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's not anything big, but it describes the time period in a convincing manner, and Duvall is good as the ever unlucky oil man. The important thing to me is that I was in a good mood when the movie was over. (7/10)

A very nice and slow gangster/samurai/afro American movie
24 February 2000
This movie takes it's time to tell a simple story. But it does so very well. Forest Whitaker is very good as Ghost Dog, and makes it believable that there lives a black samurai hit man on a roof top in New York. But if he's good, the gangsters and the French ice seller is too funny, in very different way. I laughed a lot several times, especially when Louie tries to explain to Sonny and Vargo, what he knows about Ghost Dog. Also funny is that every time someone watches TV there is a cartoon on.

As said the movie takes it's time, and this gives Jim Jarmusch the possibility to create some fantastic images. The cinematography is very beautiful and imaginative. If you prefer action packed movies, this is not for you, but if you like a movie that has all the time in the world, then go and enjoy this little piece of art. (9 out of 10)

No one will ever be as cool as Clint!
23 February 2000
What can I say. This is my favorite movie of all time. There is no contest. I still remember the first time I saw this masterpiece. I was about 15 years old, and it was on TV one night. I sat down ready to watch, and then there where a technical problem, and a 10 minute delay. But I stayed up and waited, and that was my luck. Because the music, the pictures, the slow pace, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Sergio Leone's direction and the fantastic story just swept my of my feet.

I usually say that the Shawshank Redemption is the best movie made in the last 20 years. There are several people who will agree with me on that. Luckily that doesn't conflict with my firm belief, that there will never come a movie that can compete with this one. I know many will agree on this, but certainly not as many as with the Redemption.

There is nothing wrong with this movie. Everyone is cool, Snake Eyes is evil, and the whole thing is wound perfectly together under Leone's direction with the fantastic music by Ennio Morricone.

The only reason that I haven't written a comment before, is that I was sure that I would never be able to write good enough to express the way I feel for this fantastic movie. I'm still sure that I can't, but now I gave it a try.

I hope that they one day will show it in a cinema close by, so I can get the ultimate experience. Because this movie was supposed to be watched at the big screen, and I long for once again to hear the Ugly's final scream turn into the first tone of the main theme, and just let the music take me away...

(And I actually did get that chance some years later, which is by now some years ago! It was everybit as great as I could have hoped :-)

How can MAN be so cruel. It makes you cry. 10 out of 10!
28 January 2000
A fantastic feeling. How can MAN be so cruel. This movie touched me very deeply, and I can't remember any other movie that made me so angry and sad about the way humans (can) think.

24 years old, it's a cartoon, and it's "only" a machine, but at the end when the worst of all things happened I cried like I have never cried during a movie. It has been years since the tears ran like that. I don't think I ever will forget that moment.

I almost missed this movie, because I regarded it as a children's movie, and even though I always go to Disney's cartoon to see the fantastic pictures, this cartoon does not have that kind of drawings. So I was lucky, that so many other liked it, because when I saw that it was in top 100 on IMDb's Top 250 I said to my self: "Well maybe this is worth watching", and now you know that I think it was.

Before the terrible moment, there are laughs, excitement and all the other stuff that makes a good movie. I loved the scene with the hunters that shoots a poor deer, and then looks up, sees the Giant, and cries out: "Oh no, it's the monster". That's so ironic as can be. I think the movie does a good job; it can be enjoyed both by kids and adults. I have already mentioned why adults would like it, but when I just saw it, the rest of the audience consisted of children with there parent(s). I could here that the children liked it. I don't think they really understood what happened in the worst part, they didn't sound scared. And of course, as this IS also a movie for children, it has a happy ending, smoothing out on all the bad things we have just experienced. And that's good.

Disappointing. Boring not Scary!
26 November 1999
I had heard so much about this movie both good and bad, so I had to see it. I'm just happy that I didn't pay for it. Because even though it only runs 80 min, it feels like two hours. Nothing happens and because it's filmed by hand held cameras most of the time you can't see or hear anything. Blank screen! Maybe if you believed that these film students really died, and that they where killed by a real witch, it could have been scary. But since this is obviously not the case, because the Blair Witch legends was invented for this movie, this is not a factor for me. Some of the people I saw it with was very scared, when I was bored? They at least had some fun out of it. Except for the last three minutes nothing happens!

I think it was a great stunt, to convince America that this was a true story, and the best thing that came out of this movie, must have been all the stuff on the net. That the only commercials was on the net was very smart. I guess that if I and a lot of other people don't like this movie, the creators will probably cry on their way to the bank with all their millions.

I gave it 4 out of 10 for it's new thinking alone. The movie in it self is worth nothing.

A great action comedy. Black humor at it's best.
30 September 1999
This is a very funny movie that entertains you all the way. Something happens from the beginning through the end. Even during the subtitles people stayed, to hear the last jokes. Many of the things happening has been done before, but here is added some typical Danish black humor. Like when one guy, shoots another guy, and then calmly asks him to shut up. And even though the poor guys brain is all over the room, you can't help laughing. I think there are 22 killings in the movie, but it's done in a way, so you never takes it serious. You are always aware that this is a movie, and it's all just for fun.

I think it can be compared to Pulp Fiction, for the way people gets killed, and to Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in the way the main characters are trying to raise money, with all the problems and killing this leads to.

I will give this a 9 of 10, because it's a little superficial, and not totally original, but I haven't laughed so much for a long time. Not since I saw the other new Danish top comedy Den Eneste ene in the spring.

This must be a mistake
15 September 1999
A genuine bad movie. I had some higher expectations, since this was on the Sci-fi top 100 on IMDb. But I have never been so disappointed. Really bad acting. What a waste from such superb actors as Liam Neeson and Frances McDorman. And the whole movie is plain ugly. Everything is about killing or molesting people in a cruel manner. Both the bad guys and the "good" guy does that. There is no point in this, and there is nothing realistic going on. The story sucks and the moral of the story? I don't know.

I have voted for more than a thousand movies an this is only the third that I find so bad, that I have to give it a 1 of 10.

Bad, but not that bad. A true fan wants to see this.
24 May 1999
It is way too slow, and it's stupid that we can't understand all the wookie talk, because it's so big a part of the movie. But there are some real funny moments in this movie, and not all of them are unintended. Of course there are the cartoon, that you really have to see, where Bobba Fett is introduced. But the TV kitchen with the four armed cook is hilarious, the instruction on how to build a transmitter is funny, and who wants to miss Leia's song at the end.

If you are a real fan, you have to see it, because we are shown how people (wookies) live their everyday life. But if you ever get hold of this movie, see it alone, or only with a few friends, so you can take a break if it gets too dull. Because I'm not saying that it's good! If it hadn't been Star Wars, it would really suck. But it is Star Wars, and hence I give it 5 out of 10.

Want to waste two hours of your life? Then see this one.
10 May 1999
There's nothing good to say about this movie. The acting is bad, the story is lame, and the special effects, which was supposed to save this movie, are nothing special. The only funny things is when you can guess that now is this guy going to land on a sharp pole, or when a man gets his head chopped of, and it stays on for some seconds. And that's not good it's only funny because it's so bad. To make this a complete failure the movie just stops in the middle of nowhere, (maybe they ran out of money), but our hero is flying off in a helicopter while we know that 12 other hostile choppers are on their way to the scene. What happens with those? No answer is given, but who cares. Just don't watch this one!

The most funny Danish movie in many years
7 May 1999
I don't understand why so many (anonymous!) has written that this is a bad movie. Not since "Olsenbanden ser rødt" have a Danish comedy been so funny. But this is a completely different type of humor. All the characters are funny in their own way. Niels Olsen (Niller) who is comparing everything with his kitchen installation. Paprika Steen (Stella) with her fixation on her married name. Sofie Gråbøl (Mulle) constantly reminding us that she has been studying seven years on psychology, and never finishing a sentence. Obviously she needs a shrink herself. But the most funny guy is Lars Kaalund (Knud). He has so many one liners, that are right in the bulls eye. Especially the one over the shrink question theme: "If you were a car, which one would it be." Finally I mustn't forget Sidse Babett Knudsen (Sus). She both plays and looks wonderful. She and Niller fits very nice together.

All the fun fits perfectly into this sweat little story, so don't bother to read all these negative comments. Go see it yourself and have a good laugh.

Dogme or not. This is the best Danish movie ever.
29 April 1999
The story, the acting the shock! It's a great experience. The first time I saw it, we sat down outside the movie theater and talked about it for a long time. It moved something deep inside of me. What Christian is revealing about his family, is so unpleasant and gives an understanding for how terrible a thing incest is. In another comment from 24 April an anonymous wrote that it's terrible, because they make us laugh of incest. I don't know where that idea come from. This movie is funny sometimes, but it's tragic when Christian and his sister are making speeches about incest. I do not think people where laughing there.

I have just seen it for the second time, and when Christian is starting to read his green speech my heart started beating faster, because I knew that he was about to reveal something terrible, but I couldn't remember how it went. It was unpleasant and yet fantastic. This is what a movie can do to you when you are living in it instead of just watching it.

An important thing to notice is, that this movie is not great because it is a Dogme movie. The story with these actors would always have made a fantastic movie. But I like the shaky camera and what else comes with the Dogme rules. It gives the film an authenticity that makes it even more real. Like someone attending the party where filming.

This is my favorite Danish movie, and only a few movies can come close to it. The only Danish movie that can be compared to "Festen" is another by Thomas Vinterberg: "De største helte" ("The Biggest Heroes"). In my opinion the man is a genius.

The second best movie of all time.
28 April 1999
What is so great about this movie? The question should be: "What is not so great about it?" And the answer would be: "Nothing!"

The story is good, and the outcome is not obvious but great. The acting is superb all over the line. Tim Robbins is Andy Dufresne and we suffer and feel joy with him. Morgan Freeman is magnificent as Red, and when he is narrating it is like chocolate to the ears. He has so many great lines, most of which are quoted here, because they are worth remembering, like this: "Prison life consists of routine, and then more routine." The music by Thomas Newman is fantastic. It soars over the movie giving it the right mood, sad many times but it always fits in. I have just seen this movie for the fifth time, and it keeps getting better. I'm looking forward to seeing it again, when some time has passed. I know there will be something new to notice which is another reason why it is so great. I haven't talked to anyone that didn't like it, and with the number one spot on IMDb's top 250 most people must like/love this masterpiece. I haven't found any flaws in the history, though you can find some errors on the goof list. That Forest Gump ran off with the Oscar that year seems unfair to me and obviously to a lot of other people too.

Why only the second best movie? My absolute favorite is and will always be "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." I like This movie for some completely different reasons, like that I'm a huge fan of Clint Eastwood, Sergio Leone and spaghetti western. But with "The Shawshank Redemption" almost everyone I know agrees with me.

I hope there will come more movies like this, I hope many more people will see and enjoy this movie, I hope....

A masterpiece

There is not much to say. Everything good about this movie has already been said. I have just seen the movie for the first time, and had expected that my hopes where set too high. They were not. Bogart is playing so well, and delivers his lines as good as it can get. Ingrid Bergman is stunningly beautiful and plays so well up to Bogart. What can you say, this is film when it is at its best.
