Pilgrim's Progress (2008)
Christian Movies are Getting Better and Better!
Writer, Producer and Director Danny Carrales has again demonstrated that Christian movies are getting better and better. This is an example of an independent film that has a "big budget" look. The acting is very good, which is usually the first sign of a low budget movie. Carrales has the ability to be very creative and resourceful with what he has to work with, as he has done in his other films such as, "The Gathering," and "Escape from Hell." In this case, he delivers a very dramatic, well told rendition of the John Bunyan classic. The cinematography and special effects are wonderful. This thought-provoking story is powerful and is sure to draw emotion. If you haven't read the story lately or not at all, this film is definitely worth checking out. I highly recommend it.
Call Northside 777 (1948)
Excellent James Stewart murder mystery!
This is a must-see film for a good story and a great Jimmy Stewart performance. Based on a true story, a Chicago newspaper reporter named McNeal (Stewart) investigates a newspaper ad offering a reward for the killer of a cop that was murdered years ago. He discovers the ad was made by a hard working maid who believes her son was wrongfully convicted of that murder. McNeal is cynical and unbelieving at first, but his instincts get the better of him as he eventually becomes convinced that the man is innocent. He begins a passionate crusade to find the real truth. It is an excellent murder mystery shot on-location in the streets of Chicago for realism. It is also a rare opportunity to see police procedures for investigating crimes in the 1940's. The film offers a lot of "Arcata" on how things happened in those days. One example is with the lack of copying machines, researchers had to photograph important documents with a snapshot camera and develop the film. Another printing technique of the time plays a vital role in helping McNeal find key evidence.
Escape from Hell (2000)
Excellent story of a Near Death Experience! Highly Recommended!
This film was excellent. I'm so glad to see filmmakers of faith beginning to make quality movies. This film will really get you thinking about the reality of heaven and hell. For those who believe that the Bible is truly God's Word, an instruction manual to how to live life on earth, then this film maintains the accuracy of scripture. I like the way the director took a NDE (Near Death Experience) of someone who had not accepted Christ as Savior and their eyes were opened to what Hell is really like. His use of a fictional story to make a point worked very well. I highly recommend this film to anyone interested in NDE's or to find out what the Bible says about Heaven and Hell or life after death.
The Big Knife (1955)
Absolutely Awful!
This is the slowest "film noir" film I've ever seen. Very weak script only provides opportunity for Jack Palance and Rod Steiger to deliver exceptionally well, lines that were made for an acting audition. Palance and Steiger both affirm they are indeed serious actors who can portray their respective roles with power, emotion and drama. The story itself moves at an incredibly slow pace, mostly taking place in a living room. The director obviously moved the actors around in a rythmatic circles as they delivered exhaustingly long lines, to keep the slow pace from becoming noticeable to the audience. The action doesn't pick up until the last ten minutes of the film. If you're one who's looking for more depth in a crime drama, this one's not for you!
Little Caesar (1931)
Excellent performance by Edward G. Robinson into the mind of a mobster!
Story is paced well for a 1930 film with no real long and drawn out scenes. Edward G. Robinson gives an excellent performance as the would-be-crime boss, Rico. Director, Mervyn LeRoy does a good job revealing the insight into the mind of a criminal and their insatiable desire to gain respect and feel important, a theme that was later explored in other films such as "The Godfather," and "Goodfellas."
