A Christmas Wish (2011 TV Movie)

Understated and exquisite film captures spirit of Christmas
12 December 2022
I have enjoyed this simple but beautiful film from the first time I watched it on Hallmark in 2011. The writer/director had a vision he captured in poignant yet subtle ways. The cast is a true ensemble and every single actor from the youngest to the oldest contributes to the depth of feeling and pathos of this production. The carefully selected music is also an important ingredient that moves the story along. I am a person of faith and that aspect of this film moves me. As young Mel tells her siblings the Christmas story my heart was deeply touched. The gazebo scene in the park totally overwhelmed my spirit. Thank you Mr Clyde for such a sweet and touching film. God bless you.

Ridiculous Dud and total Misfire
15 July 2022
Alert!

Just finished watching "ID Resurgence" The movie was a terrible sequel.

A film like this could have only be made by the adolescent minded who have wasted their entire lives playing video games.

It was just plain hugely derivative crap.

It's 1 hr 59 mins I can never get back.

I only hope I can forget it.

Brent! If they ask you, don't do another one!

History is alive and redemptive
7 July 2011
Our early history as a nation is so ripe with stories to be told and "Courage, New Hampshire: The Travail of Sarah Pine" does not disappoint. The characters are vividly brought to "candlelight" by a gifted group of actors and a script that immediately draws us in and holds our interest. The costuming and sets are true to the period and cinematography is remarkable. The musical score is extraordinary for an independent film.

It is a story of a time gone by and of the simple trusting faith of Sarah and the redemption brought by her faith. The political intrigue of the story also offers a powerful missive… Human behavior has not changed in the last 240 years. Individuals and governments still use and abuse power to gain their own ends and desires without thought of the consequence to others.

Sarah Pine teaches us, that in spite of this fallen estate, a simple humble faith, held resolutely in the face of adversity and travail, has the power to lift us and deliver us.

Humorous & Touching Take on Marriage
18 October 2009
My wife and I saw this film not expecting a great deal. We aren't big fans of Vaughn or Favreau (Stars and Writers). But the film preview piqued our interest. We were surprised and delighted to see that Peter Billingsley (A Christmas Story) was the Director. He did a fine job! We were quite pleasantly surprised to find Couples Retreat was very touching and poignant in it's handling of the challenges of marriage. Yes, it has some rather sexually suggestive scenes, but they are played for laughs and not personally offensive for us. The resolution of conflicts in the participants lives was very satisfying for us as we believe marriage is worth the effort! The setting in Bora Bora is absolutely breathtaking and we truly enjoyed our afternoon at the movies!

Disappointing in the extreme!
18 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Since the Chronicles of Narnia are a series of widely read and revered books I had to give my first rating of a 1 for this film. We went opening night and I was very disappointed and my wife was in tears by the end because of her disappointment. So much of Lewis' humor was lost in favor of an action movie plot with running battles, some added that aren't in the book while other important pieces from the book are left out. It became just one long tedious battle. And a romance between Caspian & Susan? We love those books so very, very much that it was painful to watch. Our children ages 21, 18 & 15, who were raised on Narnia, were not just disappointed but angry... My eldest daughter was livid. Her close friend whom we had introduced to Narnia just two years ago was very unhappy with what was left out of the film not to mention all that was added. My wife and I felt it was as if the person who wrote the screenplay hadn't read the books at all. Two revealing things we noticed too were during the opening credits with Actors and Directors and Producers names in huge type, it seemed to us that "From a book by C.S. Lewis" was in much smaller type. Also, during the previews of coming attractions, there was another fantasy movie advertised and it had in large print, "From a writer of the Chronicles of Narnia". They must have been referring to a screenwriter, but it was very aggravating! There was only one author of the Chronicles of Narnia and it was C.S. Lewis! Interestingly, they decided to cast all the Telemarines as evil Spaniards. I found that fascinating and would like to know the rationale behind that? In the books, the girls do not participate as warriors, Aslan having said war is unpleasant and decidedly so if girls participate. However, in the movie, Susan is a major warrior and is seen leading Narnians and firing her arrows into Telemarines all over the place. At the final climax and their departure from Narnia, (she and Peter for the last time) she and Prince Caspian first exchange longing glances, which you've been aware of all throughout the film, and then they passionately kiss! I'm all for that of course, but not in this movie about this book... to quote a little boy who was sitting with his grandfather in front of us, "That was yucky!"

Gary Busey Shines!
9 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this episode. Gary Busey's quiet, gentle cowboy is such a contrast to the bad guy roles he's played. Lynn Benisch who plays the saloon girl/girlfriend also is wonderful. Doc has the wise but tender bedside manner we all loved him for. The story of the bronc busting cowboys really gives one a feel for the loneliness of the roving cowboys way of life. Do you tell a dying man that he has a terminal disease? John Beck as Busey's partner tells Doc he going to give his friend a good time he will still be talking about two days after he's dead. He just doesn't count on the complications that arise. The story would make a great stand alone film. We loved it!

A really fun family movie!
9 September 2006
My wife and I took our 13 year old son to see this film and were absolutely delighted with the winsome fun of the film. It has extra appeal to boys and men who remember their childhood, but even women enjoy the film and especially Hallie Kate Eisenberg's refrain, "Boys are so weird." It's refreshing to see a film that unapologetically shows that boys and girls are indeed different in their emotional and social makeup. Boys really do these kinds of strange things and usually survive to tell the story and scare their mothers silly! We enjoyed the film so much that my son and an 11 year old friend, myself and my daughters 23 year old boyfriend went to see the movie the next day for a guys day out. We had even more fun the second time around and everyone raved about it. It's clean and delightfully acted by a pre-adolescent cast reminiscent of the TV Classic "Freaks and Geeks". We all feel it will become a sleeper hit not unlike the "Freaks & Geeks" which didn't survive its first season but sold-out its DVD release. Do see it especially if you have boys and you'll find it stimulates conversation about fun and safety! Girls will love it because of the opportunity it affords to say, "Boys are so weird!" Don't miss it...

Gabbys last film with Roy & Dale
24 February 2006
This film is the last outing with Gabby Hayes. He appeared in 44 films with Roy. This film is set in Las Vegas at the annual Rodeo they use to have there in the old days. One very funny scene occurs after Dale is locked in a refrigerator. Roy tries to free her but ends up in a fight with the bad guys. When he opens the door he says, "I just have one question, does the light go out when I close the door..." I watched Roy on the Saturday broadcast of his old TV show when I was growing up in San Diego. We also watched Sky King and Fury. Then, one Saturday in the early 60's I woke up to find nothing but cartoons, and no more western heroes. Well, as soon they started making the videos of Roy's films and TV show available I started collecting them. My three kids have grown up with them and love them, even in black and white! Each year in February we visit the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Film Festival in Apple Valley. 2007 will be the 10th Anniversary! Imagine spending three days watching these wonderful old films and hearing from some of the people who were there when they were made. Actors, Actresses and Stuntmen. Heldorado is one their best! Happy Trails! -Revran

All the B Western Cowboys together!
24 February 2006
This Roy Rogers film has everything we love about the genre. Co-starring Trigger, Gabby Hayes, Dale Evans, Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers. It carries the bonus of guest appearances of Wild Bill Elliott, Allan Lane, Don 'Red' Barry, Robert Livingston and Sunset Carson. The action with the good guys riding after the bad guys and realizing they are firing blanks is a great touch. The Robert Mitchell Boys Choir is terrific and blend their voices with Roy! You will really enjoy the scene featuring the rodeo/circus parade which Sheriff has said is not allowed. Our family rates this one in the top five of Roy's films. Hope you enjoy it too! Happy Trails! -Revran

Among Roy Rogers & William Witney's best!
24 February 2006
Using the age old conflict between cattle ranchers and sheepherders this film shines as one of my top five favorite Roy Rogers films. Dale Evans and George "Gabby" Hayes along with the Son's of the Pioneers join Roy. Another uncredited star in this film is a little lamb with a bow around it's neck and the pet of Dale's character. The first time the lamb sees cattleman Gabby, it falls in love with him. Much to his dismay it chases after him and the scenes of these two together are hilarious. Try to see the uncut version. Any Rogers film that is 55 minutes long has been cut! Hope you enjoy it as much as our family does!

Maybe the best of Roy Rogers' films...
28 October 1998
This film is definitely a classic of the Saturday Matinee Singing Cowboy Western. With the King of the Cowboys, Roy Rogers, the irrepressible George "Gabby" Hayes, the beautiful young and spunky Dale Evans and Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers you can't go wrong. Dale plays an undercover reporter out to do a story on a lost fortune and a dead bank robber. She travels to a Dude Ranch run by Roy and Gabby and the Sons of the Pioneers. Roy takes her for a ride in one hilarious scene with a Stagecoach. Gabby plays dead, coffin and all, . in one of the funniest scenes he's ever done. Elementary age kids just love this one so the family will really enjoy the ride.

One of Autry's best with a young Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers.
28 October 1998
Gene Autry and Smiley Burnett (Frog) are singing and croaking their way through another Saturday matinee. Look for a very young Roy Rogers (Leonard Slye) and the Sons of the Pioneers.
