That is Cultural Shock!
9 February 2004
Sofia Coppola (`The Virgin Suicide') wrote and directed this movie. I watched and had a few laughs. I fail to see the movie as a comedy per se though. It is actually sad to be alone abroad with no one to talk to, and to not understanding the language, habits, etc. All those people have cultural shock. I think it should be called `Cultural Shock' instead of `Lost in Translation.' I do not speak nor understand Japanese so I cannot tell if is there were things lost in translation. I know that some languages take at least a full sentences if not more, to translate in one English word. I know that is the case in the romance languages, like Portuguese, for instance. They are just wordier. That is why multilinguals talking to an English speaking person in a foreign language, will insert words in English, because there are no equivalent words. I think that she conveyed the idea of a cultural shock really well, and turned such a simple feeling into an Oscar nominated movie. That is what good movies are all about, making the audience re-live their own lives. A brilliant concept and well deserved nomination for Sofia. She is the first woman director to be nominated for an Oscar, and wish she would win, but this year I have the feeling the statuette will go to the hobbits.

I don't get it, I am not into that type of movie. Bill Murray ( `Ghostbusters II') `Bob Harris' has a great character and great job. The guy is seriously doing his job and I look at him and laugh. Well deserved Golden Globe, and could have 'thunk' that it was true that he fired his agent and his personal trainer committed suicide. That what I am saying, he is telling us something terrible sad, and we think he is joking. Scarlett Johansson (`Girl with a Pearl Earring') `Griet' is a very good actress with a very promising future before her. My favorite Scene: Bob Harris getting on the elevator, he looks like King Kong. When he stops the can to say good bye to the only blond in town. My favorite quote: Bob: `What kind of restaurant makes you cook your own food?' I highly recommend this movie. That is exactly how you feel in a different culture. It took me back to so many places I ‘ve been to.

Great Idea! 10 out of 10.

Great role for a woman!
9 February 2004
Diane Lane (`Unfaithful', `Chaplin') `Frances', a great role for a woman, is absolutely beautiful in the part. The colors of the movie, the sun, the color of her hair, the photography is just gorgeous. I love those stories, because, although it seems common place, there are people starting their lives over every minute. It encourages people in such situation. The wardrobe is great, Tuscany, is great. We are planning on going there on our next vacation. I have had great experiences with Italian people. They are very generous people. It also helps when one understands both languages in a movie, without having to read the sub-titles. I am now watching the news in Italian just getting ready for my trip. After you watch the movie you will feel the same way. Sandra Oh ( `The Princess Diary,' `Brake a Leg,' )'Patti' is a great comic release. Liked her a lot! Again her part is great role for a woman. There has been a small but very notable change in the roles for women in Hollywood. I find that the ones aging gracefully are getting great parts! Look at Diane Keaton in `Something's Gotta Give,' it is great to see her without a face lift being nominated for and winning awards. Same with Meryl Streep ( `One True Thing') she is getting good parts. I am not against plastic surgery when in moderation. Lovely movie, very enjoyable experience.

Great Movie!
8 February 2004
Two time Oscar winner, Jack Nicholson ( `The Shining', ` The Witches of Eastwick', `A Few Good Men') `Harry Sanborn' does his normal brilliant performance in this movie. Should have been nominated for Golden Globe and Oscar again. But I guess the problem is that he might have won. Jack makes acting look too easy. He is such an extraordinary performer. I just look at him and start laughing. I agree with Shirley Mac Laine (`Terms of Endearment' , `Steel Magnolias') when she stated in an ` Inside the Actors Studio' episode that she looks at Jack and starts laughing. He is so entertaining. His characterizations was perfect. I loved when he sees Erica Barry naked and runs into a bookshelf. All the detail that he adds to his characters is amazing. I have watched `As Good as it Gets` a million times, sometimes I just watch it to pay attention to all of Jack's moves. I LOVE JACK! He is tired of dating those days… Diane!!!! He wants a woman to love. Diane Keaton ( `Baby Boom' – love that movie, `Crimes if the Heart') `Erica Berry' is terrific! I love that character. I guess most middle age women would. That part is good for women. I believe I've seen most of Ms. Keaton's work and think that she deserved the Golden Globe. I just did not like her outfit that she wore for the Golden Globes. She has such a nice figure. Show it off! Don't hide it. You are a beautiful lady, Diane.

Then there is Oscar winner Frances Mc Dormant (`Fargo'), Keanu Reeves (`The Matrix'), new comer Amanda Peet ( `Identity') with great performances and a great dialogues because of the writing of Nancy Mayers (`Baby Boom', `The Parent Trap' among other great works). I find it very interesting that just reading about the actors, directors, writers work, that Nancy Mayer's movies are among my favorite movies. I did not realize that until now. Great Movie! Favorite scenes: Harry Sanborn seeing Erica Barry naked. The faces that Harry makes when he sees the stairways. I love that house at the beach! I love the Hamptons, love the photography, the music, the cast.

Favorite quotes: `Harry : I've never seen a woman that age naked before.' `What's with the turtlenecks.' Coincidently I love turtle necks, Summer and all. Elegant, perhaps…..or ` Less is more.' Highly recommended. Get the DVD or the VHS, there is a lot of real funny dialog.

Nice!
24 January 2004
Anthony Minghella (Truly, Madly Deeply, The English Patient) always interests me. The movie is the life journey of Inman returning home to the woman he loves, played by the extremely young looking and talented, Judy Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil). I paralleled his return to `Ada' played by Nicole Kidman (The Hours, The Others ) as most people's life. Inman's life journey is told in a fashion of a person returning home, in a sense like we all are, in a journey back to the unknown, and to the woman he loves. His life's journey is full of struggles and temptations, but more than anything a very humbly experience. He becomes a deserter and is very much persecuted because of it. Now comes Renee Zellweger as `Ruby Thewes' (`One True Thing,' `Bridget Jones Diary' and the much anticipated, `Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.' She is an actress I absolutely adore, with that super fast southern accent, and full of bravery very upfront, making everyone laugh. Just when you think things are pretty bad. Watching Renee work is worth the ticket price. She DESERVES Golden Globes, and Oscar and whatever other statuettes they are handing out this year. So please, members of whatever vote for RENEE!!!!!!! Please! I liked the other characters especially, the N.Y.U. graduate Phillip Seymour (Twister ) Hoffman `Veasey'. He is always playing those disturbed people and entertaining people. I look at him now and start laughing. Just like when I look at Jack Nicholson (`Something's Gotta Give,' `As Good as it Gets') I just crack up! I view this movie as the Inman's life journey of, regardless of where he is heading. It is his complete journey. Along with `Glory,' ` The Love Letter' with Campbell Scott and Jennifer Jason Leigh, Cold Mountain will stand as of my favorite movies about the Civil War.

The scenery is beautiful, the photography outstanding, loved the music. My favorite and most funny lines came from Ruby and Veasey. Favorite Line: Ruby: `They call this war a cloud over the land. But they made the weather and then they stand in the rain and say 'S--- its raining.'

Love Actually (2003)

Very uplifting movie.
22 January 2004
This is a delightful movie. As we walked out the of the theater my husband said:' Get the tape, get the DVD, whatever.' There are many aspects of this movie that mean a lot to me: (1) The majority of the movie was filmed in England, a country that I have great memories of. It is true that there is a lot of love in airports. I was there just last Spring, and felt very loved when my friends waited for me at Heathrow with big smiled giving me hugs and kisses; (2) I do live about 10 minutes from Dulles airport where one of the planes was hijacked from on September 11, and the amount of security we had to go thru at Dulles gave me a strange feeling. Although such a crime against humanity started at the airport, the writer of the screenplay was inspired by the events and came up with such an uplifting movie; (3) I do speak Portuguese and I must congratulate Colin Firth (Circle of Friends, Bridget Jones Diary, and the much anticipated Bridget Jones, The Edge of reason). I watched him in an interview where he said that he does not speak Portuguese at all. I thought he was fluent. Perhaps his knowledge of Italian and French helped. It was flawless. It was such a pleasant surprise, to hear Portuguese. It is very hard to summarize this movie, because it has a lots of people and lots of stories. Just think of it as a spoken musical, during the Spring and it is all about love. It is impossible to write a summary about everyone without making people bored to tears, and have their eyes crossed and their mind wandering after the third sentence. After awhile it is ludicrous to read because your mind will wander if you try. This movie is to be watched, and felt and not to be described. This movie is to be enjoyed, like love. The characters are all flirting, falling in love, falling out of love. The movie is excellent. We left the theater happy, enthusiastic about life. The cast is full of giants of the British Cinema. I highly recommend it!

No doubt, a very good movie.
21 January 2004
Anthony Minghella, who directed `Truly, Madly Deeply' a movie I loved, wrote the screenplay, directed, did other things this jam of a movie. The movie is the life journey of Inman, played by the extremely young looking and talented, Judy Law (`The Talented Mr.Ripley', movie also directed by Minguella; and among others `Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil'). Oscar winner Nicole Kidman (The Hours) is absolutely beautiful in the movie, and plays a very pampered pastor's kid. I have watched at least fifty percent of her work, if not more. She is a very good actress. I can say every line of `One True Thing,' Yes... I can talk like Bridget.'perfect' and know the lines as well. Renee has a sense of self worth, innocence, a strong sense of morals, even moved to NY, not to be polluted by Hollywood, that makes her a very, very special She DESERVES Golden Globes, and Oscar and whatever other statuettes they are handing out this year. So please, members of whatever vote for RENEE!!!!!!! Please! I liked the other characters especially, the N.Y.U. graduate Phillip Seymour Hoffman `Veasey', who played in `Twister' plus 37 more movies. He is always playing those disturbed people. I look at him now and start laughing. Just like when I look at Jack Nicholson (`Something's Gotta Give,' `As Good as it Gets') I just crack up! I view this movie as the Inman's life journey of, regardless of where he is heading. It is his complete journey. Along with `Glory,' ` The Love Letter' (a movie worth looking for, with Campbell Scott and Jennifer Jason Leigh) are my favorite movies about the Civil War. Speaking about a very American topic, Civil War, our Civil war, explain going to Romania. I find no reason for such fiasco, besides cheaper labor, than if made in the U.S., why sent those people all the way to Romania??????? when there are so many actors that could work in right here in our back yard... and don't feel like going all the way to Hollywood to get started. For that I find no excuse. Sorry... but the money should have stayed right here with us. We are in wartime, Hello!!!! This irritates me. But I must say the photography is beautiful, and so is the music. I recommend the movie, but I am not that much into drama. There are enough funny parts. My favorite and most funny lines came from Ruby and Veasey. Ruby: `They call this war a cloud over the land. But they made the weather and then they stand in the rain and say 'Sh** its raining.' No doubt, a very good movie.

Queer Eye (2003–2007)
Very educational show! BRAVO!
26 August 2003
Five gay men who specialize in fashion, food & wine, grooming, culture, and interior design go to the rescue of helpless straight men with no sense of fashion nor anything else and do a complete make over. At the beginning of each episode they show the chaotic house of the straight guy with his closet full of tasteless clothes and trash all over. Show his terrible looking dry long hair. Basically a man who cannot cook, who is not very sophisticated culturally, and is clueless about using the space he lives in. The straight guy usually has a big date where they might ask their girl friend to marry them. These five gay guys show the man their perceptions of how to fix all the problems pertaining the correspondent specialties. They even clean and fix their houses! Amazing! At the end of the show they watch how the straight guy shows self-improvement by guy guys suggestion and make their comments. It is a ground breaking show because it shows that people are people no matter how they are labeled. I told my husband how funny the show was. Now we both watch it and laugh a lot. Everybody can identify with the situation besides the sex preference. It is interesting that many things they recommend are the same I things I recommended for my husband. He used to think doing what I told him was doing only what gay guys would do. Such as: use a good cleansing cream, use a different moisturizer for his face and one for his body. Too many creams: he would say! Use a mild shampoo, instead of one that dried out his hair. You don't have to wear socks with every shoe you have. He now can pick colors so that we are always matching! Well...... I am hoping that he will use a self-tanning lotion, so far he uses only the sun cream. What progress! But he has taught me many things: like how to cook and then delegated the power to me, and quit. Darn!!!!! I need the fabulous five!!!!!! Very educational show! BRAVO!

Oscar night: and .. The Oscar goes go Renée Zellweger!
17 January 2003
Billy Flynn, Richard Gere (Pretty Woman) is your typical lawyer looking for money and publicity. I was not surprised by his performance because he was the under study for John Travolta in `Grease.' He sings beautifully and dances well. He stated that this movie was pure fun. I believe it was. I wish I was in it! It looks like it was a real blast! Velma Kelly, Catherine Zeta Jones (Traffic) is one of those characters that you love to hate. Her performance is excellent. All I could think of was that Michael Douglas has good taste. She has done theater and musicals in Great Britain. I knew she was a singer and a danger.

Renée Zellweger , (Bridget Jones' Diary, One True Thing) is absolutely deserving of an Oscar for her performance as Roxanne 'Roxie' Hart. Actually she should have gotten one for `Bridget Jones.' It is great to hear that she will be doing the sequel. Another movie to be memorized. I have watched the first movie so many times that I memorized the script! I LOVE Renée. I love the roles she picks, her down to earth attitude. She is a beautiful lady. I have watched most of her movies and she is believable in all of them. She is a serious actress and she is not just there acting cute. Nothing would please me more to hear on Golden Globe and Oscar night: and .. The Oscar goes go Renée Zellweger! I will be jumping up and down. There has to be a tie if someone else is to win. It belongs to her. There is no way around it. She MUST win! Queen Latifah, ( The Bone Collector) Matron ‘Mamm' Morton, was the surprise. I am not familiar with her work at all. Nice job. Mary Sunshine, Christine Baranski (Cybill) did what I expected her to do. I loved her part on Cybill and think that there should have been a spin off series with her as Maryann Thorpe. As far as I can tell I watched the series because of Maryann. I have heard her sing and knew that she was good. John C. Reilly Amos Hart ( The Perfect Storm) was so cute with his little dance. I hope that musicals do come back because they are so much fun. Interestingly after all those years of trying to do Chicago they came up with the PERFECT cast. I love the way the music comes in as the chanters are thinking. It flows really well. It is now like one of those Elvis Presley musicals where he starts singing out of the blue in a boat with his hair completely dry. To me this movie is a winner and deserves as many awards as possible. I give it a 10!

I recommend this movie!
17 January 2003
I am a big fan of Meryl Streep (Bridges of Madison County, One True Thing) and have kept abreast with her career. She is one of a kind. She plays Susan Orlean, a journalist who is bored with her work and finds herself fascinated and involved with John Laroche, Chris Cooper (I) (October Sky) who is really a really interesting person. He plays a red neck like no one else. I was in awe with his performance. I did not recognize him. Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas) plays two people in the movie. Although he is very good. I did not like the characters he plays. They are too weird! I found the movie to be very educational in the area of botany. I was amazed that John Laroche's deep knowledge of several different areas. Since my husband is a biologist from Florida we are likely to purchase the DVD or VHS. I recommend this movie! It is not as fun as Chicago. The acting is really good and is it nice to see the another generation of Coppola's begin to shine.

Skinwalkers (2002 TV Movie)

Suspenseful, extremely well written and very educational!
27 November 2002
Way to go Jamie! A great job! We hope this turns into a series.

I like the fact that all the actors and the director were of Native-American descent, it gives the story more authenticity.

A murder happened in an Indian country, thus the investigation and trial were subject to the jurisdiction of the tribe. This shows great aspects of Indian Law and culture. I highly recommend that law professors use this movie to teach the students how the justice system operates in an Indian Country. As a student of American Indian Law, I found that they were a minority group the was really hurt by the people that came to North America to find a land of freedom. Those who came in pursuit of happiness almost destroyed those who were living here so peacefully. I cannot believe that the American Indians were given land, but not given the right to use the water on the same land. Sorry, I am getting carried away in tangent here. I like anyone who gives any minority group an opportunity to be portrayed as `human beings' rather than the traditional stereotypes.

The mystic side of the culture is shown as well, and it is done with details on their symbols and witchcraft.

I think that the casting was wonderful, giving Native Americans a chance to shine. It would be a great to see a minority group that seldom has the chance to be portrayed in a positive fashion to have a series where they are not the `nasty, dumb guys' Jamie is following his dad, Robert Redford's, footsteps and breaking new ground in the American film industry! I am big fan of the entire family and will give them my whole heartedly support in any way I can! Robert Redford has given an endowment to the American cinema, as well as the International cinema like no one else I know of. It is so nice to see the second generation moving in the same direction!

Suspenseful, extremely well written and very educational! BRAVO!

Cute and Clever!
28 April 2002
An interesting and intriguing movie! We just watched it on television and it really caught my interest.

I liked Renee Russo's part as well as the fashion design in the movie. Pierce Brosman is an actor who to me is nice looking and has inner beauty as well. I recommend this movie. The photography was excellent.

My favorite scene: Guys with hats holding briefcases walking everywhere inside the museum. That was so funny; how the movie ended. That was really cute and clever!

Favorite quotes: Thomas Crown: Here's to the fear of being trapped!

Recommended! A lots of fun!!!!

The chance to see the mind of a schizophrenic! WOW!
13 February 2002
I could never have imagined how a person with schizophrenia views the world. I thought that they just heard voices, but I knew nothing about them seeing people. I was actually very surprised when I realized that `John Nash' brilliantly played by Russell Crowe (Proof of Life, The Insider) has all those imaginary people inside his head. I believed that the way he was cutting and pasting newspapers and magazines showed how confused his mind was.

Last time Brian Grasier produced a movie about someone with a psychiatric disorder was ` As Good as it Gets', a movie that won two Oscars: one for Jack Nicholson `Melvin Udal',the obsessive compulsive writer. The second Oscar went to Helen Hunt 'Carol Conelly.' the woman that Melvin falls in love with.

The movie got much praise from psychiatrists and it is loved by many people. I love the movie. I have been watching it. It is a well done movie. As a parallel I am hoping that the movie at hand wins many Oscars. I am cheering for all who got nominated, specially Russell Crowe, because he is a very good artist and because I don't believe that the Academy has ever given two Oscars in a roll to a foreign born actor.

I love the fact that `Alicia Nash's' played by Jennifer Connelly (Inventing the Abbotts) stayed by her husband's side until he was finally able to live with himself and society. My neighbors are getting the divorce! This is a true story in every sense of the word. `A Beautiful Mind' gave me more compassion than I already had for my neighbor who has the disorder. My neighbor used to send letters to the entire homeowners association talking about how much Big Brother was giving him a hard time. It is amazing! He complained about the side effects of his medication. He has been hospitalized! It is very interesting that Ron Howard gave us the chance to see the mind of a schizophrenic. This movie has already done a tremendous service to society.

I highly recommend this movie. It is incredibly well made! A***** on my scale!

First Monday (2002)
Outstanding show and it is breaking new ground!
18 January 2002
The cast is fabulous. The U.S. is going through a period of patriotism and the general public is interested in making a connection with the government because we are in `War Time.' Shows such `West Wing' are some of the best television shows at the moment. The movie `The American President' with Michael Douglas (Wonder Boys) and Annette Bening (American Beauty) has inspired many other movies and television shows. As a matter of fact actress Gail Strickland (How to make an American Quilt) played the wife of the President's advisor in `The American President'.

I believe that the series is very promising because it shows a different stage of a case, which is appeals before the Supreme Court. I have no recollection of any show on television to this date on this topic. All other shows deal with murder, defense lawyers, prosecutors, detectives, and this show is breaking new ground.

It generates public interest in finding out why attorneys cannot object at the Supreme Court. My husband was asking me why not. I explained to him that the Supreme Court is not looking at depositions by witnesses which happens in the first level court, meaning not on any type of appeal. People will understand when The Supreme Court can 'grant cert.' or deny it, when the Supreme Court can decide to hear an Appeal. The shows reveals a totally new stage in legal proceedings so it is very educational. Basically the show will deal with a facet of the Constitution that the general public is not exposed to such as how the Founding Fathers established in the Constitution the laws under which the Court operates. The title of the show is good because that is when the Court starts hearing cases in the Fall after the Summer recess. It is just great!!!!

Hopefully it will not be too legalize and that the general public will truly enjoy it! Otherwise I am sure that the legal community will truly enjoy it. The first episode showed that the Court has a new member and how the Junior will relate to the other Justices, specially because it shows how the Chief Justice sets the mood of the Court. There was a real case of a staying of execution which raises issues of death penalty among others. As someone in the legal profession I truly enjoyed the show and think that pretty soon all the clerks will start imitating the Supreme Court Justices. Attorneys use copy Susan Day's hair style on L.A. Law.

This movie will take you to a complete different world!
26 December 2001
This movie will take you to a complete different world! Very well written story and script by James Mangold (Girl Interrupted) and Steven Rogers (Stepmom ). Kate, Meg Ryan (You've Got Mail) and her brother Charlie, Breckin Meyer (Clueless) live in N.Y. in the 21st Century. Charlie is an actor. She has dated Stuart, Liev Schreiber (Walking and Talking, Scream) a guy who lives above her apartment. Kate can hear everything that goes on up there. She fights a lot with Stuart. He is very smart and very interested in the topic braking the time barrier. This movie reminded me of the movie `The Love Letter' with two of the best actors of turn of this century: Campbell Scott and Jennifer Jason Leigh. I have the tape and love that movie. In that movie they can correspond thru this drawer in an antique desk that he bought! In this movie the gap in time near Brooklyn Bridge that Stuart finds. Stuart goes back to the eighteen hundreds and takes pictures of a party. Leopold, Hugh Jackman (Swordfish) is a man living in the 1870's. He sees Stuart's small camera and decides to follow him and they both end up in this century. Leopold is clueless about his new surroundings. He gets help and insights from Charlie, Kate's brother. They exchange lessons in `how to make a woman fall in love with you.' Leopold and Charlie become very close friends. Charlie makes Leopold realize that he is falling in love with Kate. Leopold is a highly intelligent man and tries his best to learn and even improve the modern conveniences that he encounters such as trying to modify a toaster. He invented the elevator but somehow his friend, Otis was his name on elevators. Leopold is a absolute dream of a prince on his white horse. He is smart, romantic, so honorable, polite and has a title also. He represents the best of his civilization!Kate is climbing the corporate ladder in advertising. She represents the best of our civilization! She hired Leopold to be in a commercial. That helped her to get to the top of the ladder, but when she gets there she is no longer interested in it. Leopold has made Kate reflect upon what is really important in life such as: savoring good food, to enjoy a life style of simplicity and slow pace, sincerity, not to represent a company that he does not believe in among others. Favorite Scenes: Kate and Leopold ridding a horse in Central Park. Leopold walking the dog. Leopold finding the place where he kept his treasures. The dinner in the roof full of candles. Favorite quote: ` Hi, Sargent Pepper!' I recommend. Meg and Jackman are a great pair. I can't wait until I can buy the video or the DVD. I am sure I will watch it several times.

Good Show!
30 September 2001
I watched ` The Education of Max Bickford' and found that the premise of the series is quite promising. I like Richard Dreyfuss (American Graffiti, The Good Bye Girl, Mr. Holland's Opus) and know his work pretty well. Max Bickford reminded me of Mr. Holland in Mr. Holland's Opus, a person who is ready to succeed in life, but the problems and circumstances life itself brings stalls his success. He gets just as annoyed as Elliot Garfield, Dreyfuss character in' The Good Bye Girl' does. He does it really well. Actually he can go through a broad spectrum of emotions and succeed. Dreyfus is an outstanding actor. Max Bickford is a professor who seems to be very good. He is a single parent and sole provider for the family. His teenager is a typical rebel teen, and his little son is very wise. The first episode did not show why he is still single, but did mention that his wife had died. He worked a lot in his profession and just found out that one of his ex-students, Marcia Gay Harden (The Spitfire Grill) received a chair instead of him. That made him really mad. I guess I would have made me mad too. It made him made enough to accept the position of department head that he earlier had refused as political garbage. Then there is a she who used to be a he. `Erica Bettis` Helen Shaver' (The Color of Money). The audience is presented with a series of issues, that could raise good discussion between the characters and to create an atmosphere of a great show! My husband and I both enjoyed the first episode. I liked going to college so much that a new show about a teacher brings back that mystery of finding out what a professor is all about! I recommend this series, and please do yourself a favor and watch something fun and intelligent.

Good Show!

Sabrina (1995)

Sabrina is a charming Cinderella like story.
16 August 2001
Sabrina is a charming Cinderella like story without the wicked step mother, but with a father, the clever chauffeur played by the much loved British actor John Wood (Chocolat, Shadowlands, War Games) I just love John Wood! The story is about two brothers who have really lost common sense. One was too busy being a business tycoon and stepping on everybody in sight to know who he was and to enjoy himself. One must know one's self before he can enjoy who he is. "Linus Larrabee " does not know himself. "Linus" is played by Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Regarding Henry) and is a very masculine looking, brilliant actor that I grew up watching. My husband and I watched him on " Actor's Studio" and he really knows his craft, he explains it so well. The other brother, "David Larrabee ", was too busy living in the state of infatuation to enjoy or even understand true love. "David" is played by cute Greg Kinnear (You've Got Mail, As Good As It Gets) {two movies ranked among my favorites}. I found the movie to have great and very funny lines which I missed when I got the video when it first came out. I was too busy not approving the remake to enjoy the new movie, because I really liked Audrey Hepburn. Now I cannot forget to mentioned the mother, "Maude Larrabee" played by the late Nancy Marchand. I always enjoyed her charming roles, specially in "Lou Grant" I like the music of the film, and "Sabrina " played by Julia Ormond (Smilla's Sense of Snow, First Knight, Legends of the Fall) a very likable character which the only problem I have with is how fast she bloomed. She is a beautiful woman. After I rediscovered the movie, I have watched it three times, and I know it will be among my favorites. Well done Sydney Pollack! He is a great director with a great eyes for beauty!

Favorite quotes: Sabrina to Linus: "You are the world's only heart donor!"

Linus to Sabrina: "How do you say: I am looking at what I want." Sabrina:" I don't remember." Linus: You convinced me that there were some things missing in my life."

Sabrina:" Like what?" Linus" Like a LIFE."

Linus" I need her and I don't need anything."

Favorite Scenes: Sabrina in the tree branch, Sabrina dressed to kill after a long plane trip from France (I can guarantee that is only in the movies, nobody looks like that after that kind of a trip). Sabrina and Linus biking in Martha's Vineyard.

I recommend this movie and it was a special treat to watch it with new eyes.

It is an okay movie.
11 July 2001
Warning: Spoilers
For years now I have been wanting to write a review on this movie. I do not like to write spoilers because I do not like to dwell on the negative. After going to New York to see "The Producers" and seeing Matthew Broderick on stage it was only natural to watch the movie again. By the way, "The Producers" is hilarious. Matthew and Nathan Lane are great together!!!!!!!!! If you have the chance, go see it, don't miss! It was worth driving five hours, paying $95.00 a piece for a matinee, staying in a hotel over night, well if you can add... you got the picture. Pricey! But it was all worth it! Don't miss this one!

I had the imagine of Matthew Broderick as a young man or a boy from "War Games" and decided that he was too young for Meg Ryan. Well, she is one year older... Wooo! Then in "Glory" he was still young. I guess he does not show his age. He is a fabulous actor. I watched him on "The Actors Studio," and he a very cool guy. He sings beautifully in "The Producers."

Imagines from movies stick in our heads sometimes and give us a wrong perception of people. Well in the movie at hand he plays a normal guy. He is the most normal of all the characters. Meg Ryan (Proof of Life) had not played such a strange character since she did "Joe Versus the Volcano." The character as Leonard Maltin stated is "seriously disturbed.." Kelly Preston (For Love of the Game, Jerry Maguire) "Linda Green" was good. I feel that Kelly has a lot to give and has not found that great role yet! Like Renée Zellweger has found Bridget Jones. Tchéky Karyo (The Patriot) plays "Anton Depeux" the stereotype of foreigners that Hollywood has to do in every movie, which makes us foreign born American citizens pretty upset.

In conclusion, the cast is good. The story to me is very much like "French Kiss." I guess what bothers me is the notion that people will to go that extent for revenge! It is so unhealthy. Perhaps the reason that is not on my top ten list is because, the title does not go with the story. In any event the story does not flow. It is an okay movie. It is a sleeper in my video library!

Good Suspenseful Movie!
10 July 2001
Good Suspenseful Movie! This is a suspenseful movie that Meg and Russell were the "hook" to bring the audience in. Without Meg and Russell in the movie, the movie wold probably be a guy type of movie about the guerillas in South America, which as a matter of fact, reminded a lot of those movies about Vietnam. Meg was the one who draw me to watch the movie because I like her. I could care less about a movie about kidnaping and the guerillas in South America. A good suspenseful movie, which I recommend, but don't rent it thinking that it is about an adulterous relationship between Alice and Terry. It is a story about a man who got kidnaped because of the friction between multinationals and the local government, that when push turns to shove he is left in a foreign country, without help; without any support from the very same company that had hired her him, nor any help from the U.S. government to rescue her kidnaped husband. Terry is the hero who does all those neat man like things to rescue the kidnaped man!

I enjoyed the movie, and had a few laughs!
10 July 2001
I picked this movie to watch because of several factors including: Brad Pitt was supposed to be in it, then Bruce Paltrow apparently got sick during that year, Gwyneth Paltrow broke up with her teen idol boy fiancee, Bruce Paltrow was supposed to have had a hard time finding a distributor.

I enjoyed the movie because it gave the audience a chance to see people singing where we otherwise would never hear their voices. Gwyneth has a sweet voice. Andre Braugher (Homicide, City of Angels) who played a cop for such a long time sings beautifully and feels the music. It seems that going to those karaoke competitions could be a fun thing to do. The other actors who sang I don't know much about them, but I enjoyed hear those old tunes. Just good rental! I enjoyed the movie, and had a few laughs!

Proof of Life (2000)

The movie reminded a lot of those movies about Vietnam.
8 July 2001
I honestly don't get it! When Proof of Life was released there were rumors that there was excessive kissing between Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe and people were walking out of the theater because of it. If anybody did that they did not understand the story. The relationship between "Alice" Meg Ryan (You Got Mail) and the Oscar winner Russell Crowe ( Gladiator) "Terry Thorne" is incidental to the story. Perhaps people were transferring the non-ending news about Meg's personal life to the screen.

Even one of my favorite directors and producers Rob Reiner (When Harry Met Sally) was stating that Meg lit up a cigarette. I am not in favor of cigarettes either, but if you pay attention to the movie she holds the cigarette all of the time. I don't think she smokes it! She is just trying to live her life!!!!!!!!!!! This is a suspenseful movie that Meg and Russell were the "hook" to bring the audience in. Without Meg and Russell in the movie, the movie wold probably be a "non-chick" movie about the guerillas in South America, which as a matter of fact, reminded a lot of those movies about Vietnam. Meg was the one who draw me to watch the movie because I like her. I could care less about a movie about kidnaping and the guerillas in South America. Now when Meg is in a movie I think: "I just wonder how cute she is on this one?" She was just as lovely as in any other movie. A good suspenseful movie, which I recommend, but don't rent it thinking that it is about an adulterous relationship between Alice and Terry as the press made out to be BECAUSE IT IS NOT!.

We have lived overseas ourselves and because of those type of circumstances I would rather stay in the U.S. and live a simple life.

Good, but a somewhat too cliche!
17 May 2001
Oscar winner director Mel Gibson (The Year of Living Dangerously, Maverick) plays "Nick Marshall" a very likable guy in this movie. I still don't understand why nice looking guys have to direct to get Oscars. Robert Redford (A River Runs Through It) had to do the same thing as well as many others.

I have not watched Mel in those Lethal Weapon movies, and thought that I did not know much about this a work, but actually I have several of Mel's movie in our movie library. An extremely handsome, religious family man, Mel is among Hollywood ‘s top role models. The guy has so many kids. I wonder where he finds the time to be so fit... I liked Nick because he used his new found gift in a sensible way. Nick felt that he had abused it but I thought he was a pretty okay mind reader. He became a much better person after he was stuck by a lightning. My husband thinks he should have been able to keep the gift, just learn to control it.

Oscar winner actress Helen Hunt (Mad about You, As God As It Gets) is always a pleasure to watch, and I am confident that I know her work. She looks extremely pretty in this movie. Even more than her normal natural beauty.

I like the music in this movie and the movie has rhythm. I love that!

The cast is fabulous, a real audience grabber. I had no idea that all those famous people were there. Alan Alda (Jake's Women) Beth Middler, Marisa Tomei, Lauren Holly, all those Oscar winner's!!!!!!! I guess no strugglling actor will do much with Icon Entertainment International and Paramount who seem to only want to deal with the big guys. The producers, directors, music are all of the finest of the fine and this movie had everything to succeed. This was not a struggling independent type movie. This is only for the cream of the crop. That I don't quite like, because I think the industry should always try to give chance to the new comers, but that is not true.

The movie was very enjoyable, and we had fun watching. I will probably buy the tape and soundtrack. Who does not like Sinatra at his best? Although I don't like to compare, I felt that "Brigit Jones Diary" was less pretentious but a much better over all movie. Not so cliche! Or is Hollywood only after cliches!!!! Just wondering!!!

Favorite scenes: Nick Marshall dancing and singing. That was really cool. Well the stair way case at the final scene reminded me too much of "As Good As It Gets" and with all this money and talent the last scene could be a little different. Overall this movie is a winner.

Favorite Quotes: Darcy McGuire: What kind of knight in shining armor would I be if the man I love needs rescuing and I just let him walk out my door?

Men of Honor (2000)
10/10
This movie deserves a 10 out 10.
23 April 2001
I am truly surprised to see that this movie only has a 6. 8 on IMDb Users Rating. In my view it deserves a whole lot more. It is a truly inspirational movie. It had my husband and I applauding and cheering for "Carl Brashear," played by Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr.(Jerry Maguire. As Good as it Gets). It is so true to life, specially in the States that everything is about race. I witnessed the hell that Carl had to go through to achieve his goal and become a success as a person many times. Some people may think that Affirmative Action helps people to succeed, I do not follow that view. All it does is allow people entrance to universities and other institutions, but they can be given hell and the system will do anything to make them quit, and then turn around and say that is how "they are." In the movie when "Leslie W. "Billy" Sunday " Robert De Niro (Awakenings, The Deer Hunter) rips Carl's tool bag that has all the necessary instruments that Carl needs to assemble the flange in order to pass the test, it accurately depicts some of what I have seen people going through.

The movie stuck a cord with me also because is my husband was a Navy Ship Salvage Diving Officer and had to endure that same kind of testing. It gave me a better understanding of his underwater pictures where he has his colleges assembling parts underwater where the visibility is actually zero. Everything is dark, the work is usually done under or in mud, and it is pitch black. Everything is done by feel as in the scene where the divers are topside assembling a flange blindfolded. Of course they needed somewhat clear water in the movie to make the film! My husband sure has some of tales to tell, such as when he actually saw his air hose and in scared him to death. Usually he could not see anything and the shadow of the hose passing in front of him frightened him. Needless to say he got his VA benefits and went to graduate school, and found something else to do with himself. I am glad because his job was excessively dangerous in the navy when we first met.

As far as the military goes, the attitude of the instructors during training (accurately shown in the movie), is from what I am told, very similar as well to my experience in law school. They will kill you before they will let you graduate. This movie deserves a 10 out 10. I highly recommend it!

Nurse Betty (2000)
7/10
Nurse Betty has an international flavor to it.
23 April 2001
Many people around the world watch soap-operas. In some countries such as Brazil the soaps run six days a week and last about six months maximum. The country literally stops when they are aired. Unlike the States where they air during the afternoon, in Brazil they aired at night in prime time. The 8'clock soap is watched by millions. Those "Tele-novelas" have a tremendous impact on peoples lives. People tend to copy trends from those much watched and loved television novelas, such as hair cuts and hair styles. They quote lines of the soaps, and it is like a soccer game, if the favorite team losses productivity in the work place goes down the next day.

From that perspective I believe that Nurse Betty has an international flavor to it. And no wonder that the Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones's Diary) won a Golden Globe award from playing Betty Sizemore. She is a very good actress. The members of the foreign press probably could see that this could be a true fantasy story as far as other countries go. I don't think that people fantasize have to necessarily have a pos-traumatic disorder to really believe that they are the heroes and heroines. To be sure, not to the extent that Nurse Betty was fantasizing. I think that many people live their lives though soaps because they don't have a life.

This movie is fun and interesting, the plot is fresh and we enjoyed it very much. I recommend this film!

The script is marvelous, Renée is terrific!
15 April 2001
This is a very refreshing movie. The script is marvelous. It is extremely well written and each line is throughly tough and extremely funny. I usually prefer to see movies when they come out on video because there is no one talking behind me or some really tall boy who comes to sit in front of me, but I love Renée Zellweger (One True Thing, Jerry Maguire, A Price Above Rubies), who is not just a beautiful person on the outside, she is beautiful on the inside as well. She is also a very good actress. Renée has done some heavy duty acting with actors of the caliber of Meryl Streep, William Hurt, Jim Cary, Tom Cruise, just to name a few. She is wonderful in the part of Brigitt Jones. She is Brigitt Jones!!!!!!!!!! I hope she gets a nomination for this. They tricked me because I thought she was going to stay with "Daniel Cleaver," played by Hugh Grant (Notting Hill), but she does not. I am hoping they do a sequel, because I was reading that "Bridget Jones : The Edge of Reason," is even funnier than "Bridget Jones's Diary." I think this movie is one of the best movies I have seen lately. It is funny without being canned. I think that Colin Firth (Shakespeare in Love) , Hugh Grant, all did a great job, specially Renée Zellweger's accent. There is a possibility that she learned British English at home because both of her parents were born in Europe, and Europeans tend to have a British accent not and American accent in English. She also spent sometime in England studying the part. Favorites Scenes: Opening Scenes when Bridget is singing along with a record. The fire station scene. Sending e-mail to Daniel Cleaver without showing any facial expression. Picking up which undies to wear. The whole movie is hilarious. Favorite Line so far: " everyone knows that dating in the thirties is not the happy lucky free-for-all it was when you were twenty-two..." I like Brigit's self-deprecating sense of humor.

The Haunting (1999)

.If you are into suspense and a good scare this is a good one.
15 April 2001
The movie is about a study in fear. I was reading Leonard Maltin's review, and he seems to state there were "virtually no scares" in the movie. I was really scared. Perhaps people are getting desensitized because the movies are getting more and more graphic, more special effects, more deaths, more explosions. I think that what made Hitchcock's movies scary was what your mind put into the movie; suggestive, not graphic. I will not watch movies that will bring fear to my mind. My husband picked this one and we watched it together. I though it was just as scary as "The Shining." As far as scary goes it gets a ten on my fear scale. If you are into suspense and a good scare this is a good one.
