Snatch (2000)
Better than Lock, Stock???
10 September 2000
A fantastic film. Again Guy Richie has constructed a masterful piece of film. The story is much more involving than Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and as a result I've heard some critism of it. However Richie brings more characters into the fray for us to cheer and boo.

Apparently Brad Pitt, upon seeing Lock, Stock approached Richie asking to be in his next film. All I can say is that it's an inspired piece of casting, with Pitt possibly stealing the show, although the rest of the cast fight pretty hard to stop him.

A cinematic piece of brilliance, showing that us *Brits* know how to make a great film. An absolute MUST SEE

Fantastic
10 September 2000
Fantastic. In a way it's similar to the *Guy Richie* school of film making...a large number of seemingly unconnected plot lines that link together later on. And the way that they link together is brilliant.

Yes it's got Drug use and violence, but so do many films now. Critically not incredibly well received, it's one of my favorite films.

And to top it off...it's got Katie Holmes in it too :)

The Patriot (2000)
Insulting
19 July 2000
I have just witnessed one of the most disgraceful pieces of cinematography ever made. People may rant and rave "Oh it's just a film, it's fiction, it's not real". But that makes it worse in some respects.

The majority of people's historical knowledge is now coming from the televisual/film media. People will believe that this is true.

People will believe that the British really are that evil. And yet American attrocities such as Vietnam (alright there is "Apocalypse Now", but that's wiped out by "Good Morning Vietnam" Look everyone in "Nam" was happy and they had nice DJ's on the radio) and various incidents with the Japanese in WWII are conveniently forgotten. (ordering aircraft to shoot lifeboats anybody????)

It's a sick injustice to the British people and piece of crass American flag waving. I am surprised that the film company had the guts to release this drivel in Britain.

Insulting.

Total Classic
23 June 2000
My local multiplex showed this recently in a "classic season". I have seen this many times on TV and video, but never on the big screen and I can honestly say that everyone should try and see it at a cinema.

Watching an original print, which is 19 years old at this point and just one year younger than me!, was stunning. I noticed stuff that I had somehow never seen before, like german writing graffiting part of the map room, and the strange plane in the background when Sala is lowering Indy into the map room.

These little things made seeing such an all time classic film for the umpteenth time amazing. The packed laughed at Indy shooting the swordsman, even though we all must have seen it thousands of times between us. This shows the sheer brillance of the film. You can watch it again and again, but it STILL entertains you.

As a friend said when we left the cinema to the strains of John Williams, "They just don't make films like that"

Awful. Why all the fuss?
1 April 2000
I can sum this film in one word, "tortuous". It's overly long by about an hour, the beginning of the film is confusing, with many ideas just appearing. The acting is average with no outstanding performances. I cannot understand why people praise this film so much. I felt it was unworthy of all the Academy award nominations that it gained.

It's Fun and clever.
28 February 2000
People may say that this is degrading Shakespeare. However, I think that it helps to introduce kids and teenagers to him without making them read long Boring passages.

It's well acted and very funny in places. It's also got a really clever script. I love teen movies anyway, but this is one of the best. A definite must see.

Scream 3 (2000)
Hmmmm, not sure about it.
28 February 2000
I personally thought that Scream 2 was better than Scream 1, which is against many peoples opinions. And having seen Scream 3, I'm not sure which I prefer.

None of the films has ever scared me, so it's not that that bothered me. Scream 3 I feel is the funniest and has some great cameos.

But I still think that 2 is better, only just, but better. I didn't like the "Hollywood" setting of 3. It wasn't right. Don't get me wrong, 3 is a good movie, but it could have been better.

Top Notch Entertainment
28 February 2000
I am a Catholic, and I personally cannot see why others get in such a fuss about this film. It is not putting it down at all. If anything, it endorses the Catholic church.

But enough of that. It's an extremely funny and clever film with great performances by the cast. I don't really like Affleck and Damon much...I didn't particularly like Good Will Hunting. However, I have altered my opinion due to their roles in this film.

Top Notch Entertainment.

Wow
4 July 1999
What can I say. I really didn't know what this was going to be about when I entered the theatre, as I was dragged along by my friends. However once inside I was shown a film that can only be described with the word "wow". The premise of the film is one which could work, you don't really know. And as for the special effects...

Many, many people have a huge problem with this film, but they are just not getting into it.

You must see this film. I have heard it said that it will change your life. I was sceptical of this but it's true. An absolute winner, and worthy of number 20 on the list of top films

Not bad at all
16 April 1999
This film serves up a decent horror flick. It's a good one to see with a group of friends. The premise is a tad 50's and is really a modern "invasion of the body snatchers", but that's not a minus point.

It builds up the tension and paranoia brilliantly and really does leave you guessing for quite a while towards the outcome. As for being scary, it's not full of "jumping out of your seats" moments, but it does have its fair share of them.

The only criticism I have is how the group suddenly decide that aliens have taken over, although there hasn't been any UFO's or abductions or anything. This does seem a bit out of place,( As is Usher, who despite being in all the trailers and posters etc, is only in the film for about 5 minutes.) but forget that and it's an enjoyable "generation y" flick. Not bad at all.

The BEST children's TV possible.
9 April 1999
This series was just amazing. It was ALWAYS on British TV, especially the episode when they crash-land the Golden Eagle. This just brings back so many childhood memories and it always gets brought up at parties, i.e everyone ends up discussing the ending. Just how exactly did it end? You watched it for 3 years or so and NEVER saw the ending.

This IS primary school TV back in the 80's. Forget the Wedding singer, this is the 80's.

Brilliant.

And the fuss was about what...?
8 April 1999
The funny parts were in the trailer. The rest of the film is useless time filling drivel. Simple as. Don't watch it, watch the trailer. It'll save soooo much time. 1/10 (I'm being generous)

What the...?
8 April 1999
How did anyone green light this? The acting was shameful, the plot non-existent, and I've seem more convincing special effects on Sesame street. How did Hopper lower himself to this? Absolutely no redeeming factors. But since I'm nice 2/10

Shagadelic Baby, yeah!!!
8 April 1999
Come on people. It's a spoof. Therefore it's sending things up. People must have gone into this expecting a James Bond-esque film. The whole point is that it's making fun of James Bond and the 60's as a whole. It's a complete no-brainer and is absolutely one of the greatest party/hanging out films...EVER! Some of the one-liners are absolute classics and will go down in cinematic history "Do I make you horny baby?...YEAH!". It's FUN.

That's all there is to it. Enjoy. 9/10

Dawson's Creek (1998–2003)
It's good, but not as good as My So Called Life.
8 April 1999
I'll admit, I'm quite addicted to Dawson's Creek. It's well acted, the storylines are quite engaging and I can relate to them rather well.

However, I still think that the defining piece in this genre is My So Called Life. Maybe it's due to be being the same age as the characters in that when it first came out, therefore I could relate to it more. Maybe it's the gritter storylines in MSCL. There is something about that show.

But Dawson's Creek is a very satisfactory substitute and fills the gap very well.

My So-Called Life (1994–1995)
Amazing.
8 April 1999
This show was quite outstanding. I could relate to the characters so much. Even though it's in a totally different culture. It is THE defining thing that will always be my 4th year at secondary school. It was incredibly well written and acted. How Claire Danes is the only successful actor/actress from out of that I'll never know. How did it not get commissioned for another series I will never comprehend. Every teenager MUST see this series (along with to a lesser extent Dawson's Creek).

Harmless Fun
8 April 1999
It's Fun. It's as simple as that. The premise is not actually to far fetched. Who hasn't thought about going into space? And in this the kids get to do it. There are a few "you did it because you're a team" slushy American moments but otherwise it's a great harmless rainy day movie. 8/10

The Transformers (1984–1987)
Who didn't love this?
8 April 1999
This was one of the classic children's TV programs which everybody always discusses at all night parties along with He-man, She-Ra, Thundercats, The lost cities of Gold (how did that end?) etc... Everyone had Transformer toys and the comics, books and videos etc... It was great with all evil decepticons who tried to rule the Earth and the nice autobots. The decepticons turned into cooler things though. Most of them could fly although one autobot was a Beetle. An absolute all time children's TV classic

Great. Simple As.
8 April 1999
This brings back so many childhood memories. (I'm not old, I'm 19) It's brill. The trains, the old house, the fallen runner, the really scary landslide (well it is when you're 6), the drama if the children can stop the train, or will it crash? This is a children's film without a doubt, but it offers great harmless no blood/guts/guns etc for children. And it's got Bernard Cribbins in it, who's cool. 8/10

Brilliant. Outstanding. British.
8 April 1999
I had always heard about this film, but only got to see it recently at Uni. This really lives up to the hype. It's classically 60's with a distinct "Britishness" about it. The minis were an inspired touch and after seeing this I promise you will want one. All that along with "that" line. The ending is a bit "lock, Stock and two smoking barrels" though...

Blue Peter (1958– )
Sticky Back plastic. Here's one I made earlier
8 April 1999
Blue Peter is a British institution. EVERYONE has been brought up on it's mix of sticky back plastic, papier-mache, toilet rolls and pipe cleaners. Everyone has tried to make things that come out as the presenters "here's one I made earlier" efforts. (Cheating presenters). They also get the large sections of the British children population to raise large amounts of money each year. It's simply unique. And uniquely British.

I have never been so wrong about any thing before.
7 April 1999
Wow. I personally wanted to hate this film. With all the positive reviews I thought that it must have been extremely overrated. However I have never been so wrong in my life. The film was brilliantly funny with a style reminiscent of the old Ealing comedies. The acting was strong with possibly the star turn by Vinnie "hatchet man" Jones. (reference to his footballer hardman status) The plot twists and turns and has far more coolness than any Tarentino film (just what is Pulp Fiction on about?). It has a realism to it, you could see the events really happening in south London. In truth many may not "get" it, especially in America as there is a vain of British humour running through it. But don't let that put you off. This is an absolute must see. 9.9/10

Could have been better.
3 April 1999
This film could have been sooooo much better, and probably was. It has been in post-production for 2 years and has apparently undergone a large cutting.

The film's premise is good, as there hasn't been many "highwaymen" movies. That's about it though, as the plot is utter bobbins and non-existent at times with the most predictable ending I've seen for a very long time.

There are large plot errors in it, possibly caused by the re-cutting. The performances were also decidedly underpar with some rather wooden acting by some of the major characters.

All in all, a very very mediocre film with the only major redeeming point as far as I could see being a rather good soundtrack of a classical/dance crossover.

Wow.
3 April 1999
This was the most gripping and emotional films I've seen for a very long time. I watched it on its very first screening and as a result there were many ex-service men in the theatre. The total and utter silence during the entire film except for the ending where quiet sobbing could be heard gives testament to the powerful imagery concocted by Spielberg.

Having watched the opening beach scene being filmed in Ireland, I had no idea how dramatic it would appear on the screen. After the initial 20 minutes critics said how the film went downhill. I thought that it opened up the characters and made you feel for them at the climax of the film.

All in all the most powerful war film ever.

Top Notch Action Film
2 April 1999
This is a great action film. It goes straight into the storyline and just keeps going. Ford gives one of his usual powerful portrayals. Gary Oldman as well gives a very convincing and terrifying performance. The one weak point I would say is Glenn Close's role. I personally thought that she would have a huge involvement in the story after seeing trailers etc. but I found her character to be rather uninvolved in the film.

Even as an "overseas" viewer, i.e. non-American, I found it to be not too "slushy American self gratifying backslapping". (for the perfect example of this, see the Kevin Kline's Presidential speech in "Independence Day")

All in all, a very enjoyable action romp.
