The Contender (2000)
Very powerful film, a 10+
This one was much stronger than I had expected it to be. The characters were well filled out and convincing. Several nominees for the awards as far as I'm concerned. The timing of this movie (so close to the election) was masterful. I liked everything about it. My only disappointment was the Jeff Bridges ISN't actually running for president.
Deadbolt (1992)
Deadbolt is dead in the water
I used to like the character the Justine Bateman played in that Michael Fox sitcom...She was like a small jewel that plays relief to the main stone of the setting. Now she's supposed to be the main stone but in my opinion doesn't even come close to rising to the occasion. She's pale and confused. Sometimes I thought that she paused long enough before responding to effect complete break in character...has she forgotten her lines? So, what seemed a very shallow made for TV movie, was made even less exciting by a pretty slack performance. Nothing worth a real analysis here. Just don't waste your time.
Fight Club (1999)
On the edge, with an edge.
I agree with all the accolades spoken in reviews before me. This filmdefies categorisation in that it deals with so many elements. No doubt it will be classified in the Vid stores as comedy/drama, but that hardly captures it. It is one of the strongest EXPERIENCES in movies I've had in a long time (and I've seen some good films this year-for example, American Beauty). Nothing touches F.C. for sheer impact visually, emotionally, philosophically, psychologically...etc.
My expectations of this movie, were shattered within a few minutes of the beginning. I remember thinking "this movie better be good, it's pretty long". Well, I come away from it reminded of a driving trip I took in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico where after 2-3 hours of surreal beauty, I said to my wife: "whew, enough already. I gotta come down!"
