Starman (1984)
Sadness, joy, loss, love...brilliance
The achingly gorgeous Karen Allen and the sublime Jeff Bridges star in this story of love and innocence.
A magical movie, with a poignant, otherworldly score sees John Carpenter direct a movie outside his usual genre. Well, all the planets came into alignment for this one, as it is a heart warming emotionally involving ride from start to finish.
This would be one of my 10 "Desert Island" movies.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Visually stunning, boring in parts, but I will see it again!
I've not read the book so didn't know what to expect of the story.
First the negatives
The pacing and plot disappoint, 2 hours of build up then 1 hour of action then a rather abrupt ending that feels more like the end of a paragraph than the end of a book.
The score: I hardly remember it. Perhaps because it was so well integrated into the movie, or perhaps because it was dull.
The 2 "comedy" hobbits are bearable, but buffoons. They teeter on the cliff that leads to annoying valley.
The positives
The film looks beautiful and the scale is huge.
The FX are fantastic, but I *expect* things to look this good.
Vigo Mortensen and Sean Bean are great in their roles.
While it feels 3 hours long, at no point did I want it to end.
So far, a 7/10. On a second viewing I think it could rise to a 9/10.
