In Her Shoes (2005)

Typical Chick Flick
21 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Got dragged into this by the missus thanks to Harry Potter being full, and have to say the film didn't impress me.

I went in to the film moaning to said missus about the typical chick-flick formula of "Girl meets boy. Girl and boy fall out. Girl and boy brought back together through circumstances or another person. Girl and boy live happily ever after." and it certainly followed that to the letter.

Plus points, well Diaz shines on the screen. I've never really been a fan of hers, but here she was truly radiant and, dare I say, hot.

To be honest, I'd rather have gone to the Libertine other than this, but you can't argue with women, can you?

Best Harry Potter movie
21 November 2005
Having not thought much about the other HP movies, I went in to this one expecting the worst, and was pleasantly surprised.

Don't get me wrong, I am a *massive* fan of the books, but Radcliffe & Co. haven't really done it for me so far.

As long as you don't think too much about the book, as a stand-alone movie this is fine, quality family entertainment. There are some polished performances from the teenage stars, and the plot flows along nicely.

Overall then, a good movie. Not one of the greatest ever made, but certainly the best Potter we've seen.

An entertaining piece of American Schmaltz
9 August 2005
Went to see this with me old man last night as it was one he fancied, and have to say it was a decent if not amazing film.

The main stars were superb, Jamie Foxx is great though has some awful dialogue and Jessica Biel looks hot but Josh Lucas steals the show as a typical American fighter pilot (from a UK perspective at least).

You can tell the film's directed by Cohen, and features the kind of action sequences you'd expect from his work. The CGi is superb, the planes being so realistic. A little criticism comes from the speed of some of the shots, you just can't keep up with it some times.

Overall, a decent bit of American entertainment. Maybe more a film to rent a lonesome Friday night than a cinema flick, but I'd still give it 3/5 - converted to 6/10 for the IMDb.

Thoughts of a dragged along fiancée... SPOILER!!
8 November 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Oh dear. Not a movie I enjoyed.

But before the film, the Star Wars trailer was on and... wow!

Then the turgid mess started, but I was happy to give it a chance on its own merit - better than 108 minutes of boredom.

Well, as the film starts Bridget is jumping out of a plane. Now, we could have had the plane crash, or Bridget just bloodily mutilated but no, as you can guess "hilarity" ensues. Very liberal use of the word "hilarity" of course though.

Then the rest of the film... as I walked out I described it to the missus as "a clichéd pile of poo". It's basically one set piece after the other, no obvious plot other than a modified standard chick flick plot (the standard being girl meets boy, boy annoys girl, boy makes romantic gesture, girl and boy reunite and live happily ever after).

For a heart-warming comedic film, the laughs were few and far between. I counted seven laugh out louds from the audience and only laughed out loud once myself "Maybe you should marry her 'cos then she'd definitely carpet me".

The only saving grace comes from a woefully under-used Hugh Grant. From an actor ten years ago to make you cringe, he's now really got the hang of it. His Daniel Cleaver is a smug bastard and is the only one of the cast to come out with any credit. He acts the role so naturally that he really shows Firth and Zellwegger up.

Oh and the much mooted Lesbian moment... talk about a let down! What was expected to be a decent part of the film is just underplayed far too much.

So, in the end I'll rate it

1/5 - Formulaic drivel

Not a surprise as I was never expecting to enjoy it, but...

...of course as it's a date flick and was dragged along by my fiancée Emma. I asked her for her thoughts on it seeing as she was part of the "target audience" and was genuinely surprised by her comments. She's the sort of girl who adores chick flicks, I think she's got about 70 of the beggars in her video collection, including of course BJ 1.

Amazingly, she was really disappointed in the film. She called it "over-hyped" and "not a patch on the book. They missed so much of it out they ruined it, just like the Harry Potter films." She gave it 2/5, even though she's a massive Bridget Jones fan.

So, to sum up... don't go expecting Pride and Prejudice. Heck, don't go expecting Bride and Prejudice!

Avoid!

Great game
1 January 2000
Well, what can I say? The "real" Command and Conquer 2 follows on from 1.5 (Red Alert) and then some.

As in the first game, you can take control of either the evil NOD or the heroic GDI. Each faction has its own attributes, and both are fairly evenly matched. When you have selected your side, you are treated to a FMV sequence, where star actors such as James Earl Jones or Michael Biehn have put in some of the best performances in a video game. Once the sequence is over, you're into the game, and it plays just the same as other RPGs - point, click and build.

But it's on the multi-player side of things that the game really scores. Westwood, the developers, have obviously put in a lot of time and effort into the making the multi-player game as even as possible, whatever side you choose. And, with a ranking system you know just how good the person you're playing against is.

Get it now!!!
