Got dragged into this by the missus thanks to Harry Potter being full, and have to say the film didn't impress me.

I went in to the film moaning to said missus about the typical chick-flick formula of "Girl meets boy. Girl and boy fall out. Girl and boy brought back together through circumstances or another person. Girl and boy live happily ever after." and it certainly followed that to the letter.

Plus points, well Diaz shines on the screen. I've never really been a fan of hers, but here she was truly radiant and, dare I say, hot.

To be honest, I'd rather have gone to the Libertine other than this, but you can't argue with women, can you?

Oh dear. Not a movie I enjoyed.

But before the film, the Star Wars trailer was on and... wow!

Then the turgid mess started, but I was happy to give it a chance on its own merit - better than 108 minutes of boredom.

Well, as the film starts Bridget is jumping out of a plane. Now, we could have had the plane crash, or Bridget just bloodily mutilated but no, as you can guess "hilarity" ensues. Very liberal use of the word "hilarity" of course though.

Then the rest of the film... as I walked out I described it to the missus as "a clichéd pile of poo". It's basically one set piece after the other, no obvious plot other than a modified standard chick flick plot (the standard being girl meets boy, boy annoys girl, boy makes romantic gesture, girl and boy reunite and live happily ever after).

For a heart-warming comedic film, the laughs were few and far between. I counted seven laugh out louds from the audience and only laughed out loud once myself "Maybe you should marry her 'cos then she'd definitely carpet me".

The only saving grace comes from a woefully under-used Hugh Grant. From an actor ten years ago to make you cringe, he's now really got the hang of it. His Daniel Cleaver is a smug bastard and is the only one of the cast to come out with any credit. He acts the role so naturally that he really shows Firth and Zellwegger up.

Oh and the much mooted Lesbian moment... talk about a let down! What was expected to be a decent part of the film is just underplayed far too much.

So, in the end I'll rate it

Not a surprise as I was never expecting to enjoy it, but...

...of course as it's a date flick and was dragged along by my fiancée Emma. I asked her for her thoughts on it seeing as she was part of the "target audience" and was genuinely surprised by her comments. She's the sort of girl who adores chick flicks, I think she's got about 70 of the beggars in her video collection, including of course BJ 1.

Amazingly, she was really disappointed in the film. She called it "over-hyped" and "not a patch on the book. They missed so much of it out they ruined it, just like the Harry Potter films." She gave it 2/5, even though she's a massive Bridget Jones fan.

So, to sum up... don't go expecting Pride and Prejudice. Heck, don't go expecting Bride and Prejudice!
