Memento (2000)

A work of art
27 October 2002
Truly superb. I just rewatched this for the third time, it's one of those 'keeper' movies that gets better with every viewing. Even once the twists are revealed, it's fun to watch just to admire how intricately the whole thing's put together.

There's not a single weak performance here - I thought all the leads were excellent. "That" scene with Carrie-Anne Moss is superb - it really caught me by surprise. The dialogue overall is terrific, very natural, and the understated score also seems to fit well.

To see this movie in the top 10 of all time is pushing it a bit, I think, but it's definitely one of the greats : it thoroughly deserves a 9 or 10 on imdb.

painfully bad acting
27 October 2002
Aw, c'mon... I can't deny that the *idea* is great, and I was really looking forward to seeing this movie. But the acting and script are diabolical, really atrocious. I enjoyed the scenes with Rennes, but all the other characters are thoroughly badly written and acted - none of them are remotely believable. The concept's cool, but no way does this deserve more than a 5 on imdb.

btw, for a quality 'mathematical' thriller, I recommend Pi - a superior movie in just about every way.

painful waste of time
4 August 2002
I'm starting to wonder whether some of the comments below are genuine... I'm a big fan of South Park, but this is pitifully bad. The one joke that made me smile ("show me a sign.. any sign!") is lifted word for word from a far superior Steve Martin movie. As for the rest... it's painfully unfunny.

The only other thing this movie has going for it is cameos by a number of real-life porn stars; but when there's not so much as a bare breast on display, what on earth is the point ? Stick to adult movies if it's bare flesh you want to see, and rent one of the early Zucker bros. movies if you want to see a genuinely funny comedy.

A total waste of time in my opinion.

Kill this series now !
18 November 2001
I'll keep this review short, because I don' t think this bland homogenized mess of a movie deserves more.

The casting is just plain bad : Not one of the bad guys is convincing for a SECOND and, sorry, but Brosnan simply doesn't convince me in the lead role. His bland, blow-dried good looks put me more in mind of an car salesman than a ruthless assassin.

Pretty much every major stunt and set-piece is utterly, utterly ludicrously over the top. I'd heard great things about the opening boat chase, but it came off as thoroughly unbelievable and derivative. Things get worse : the ski chase is extremely tedious (how on EARTH can you mess up a Bond ski scene so badly?), and the sequence with the helicopters/rotary saws at the harbour is just plain childish.

I grew up with the Roger Moore movies, and for me he epitomizes what Bond is all about : class, wit and sly cunning. TWINE is nothing more than 'made for TV' style rubbish. *Please* don't waste your time and money on this...

pitiful

Oh dear, what a mess. I grew up with the Roger Moore movies, and for me he epitomizes what Bond is all about. Class, wit and sly cunning.

Where to begin ? The casting is just plain awful. The oh-so-scary main villain and his teenaged henchman are utterly laughable. Did anyone find them *remotely* threatening ? Love interest Teri Hatcher is wooden and unconvincing. Not even Q, wheeled out for the token gadget scene, can rescue this dud (a gadget scene, incidentally, that shamelessly pushes product placement to new levels). And, sorry, but Brosnan simply doesn't convince me in the lead role. His bland, blow-dried good looks put me more in mind of a car salesman than a ruthless assassin.

Like other reviewers, I'm bothered by the brutality of this movie. Bond murders an innocent security guard after he breaks into the newspaper offices, and machine-guns some 20-odd extras in the tedious climax.

And I can't finish without mentioning the alleged 'witty' dialog between Bond and Moneypenny. Her 'cunning linguist' and 'pump her for information' comments are so blunt and obvious it's painful. This is Bond, so I'd expect the odd double entendre - that scene's just embarassing.

Did I go on long enough ? Avoid this rotten excuse for a movie.

The 6th Day (2000)

Impressive
31 August 2001
I thought this was a terrific Arnie move, it's such a shame to see it languishing at 6.1 on IMDB. First of all, I found the story thought-provoking and emotionally compelling. The scenes with Dr. Weir and his wife on her deathbed stand out, and the bittersweet ending wraps things up very nicely indeed. Arnie's great: he's perfectly good in this role and still has awesome onscreen presence. If anything, I think he's improving with age - kind of like a younger Charlton Heston.

What else ? The effects are nice ('Simpal Cindy' is an amazing - if slightly creepy - creation) and the movie portrays a realistic and compelling vision of the near future. The script's well done, on the whole, and there are a couple of sly in-jokes that made me smile ('I _might_ be back'... guess you had to be there!) There's also a killer plot twist somewhere in the middle, that brings to mind Total Recall.

Oh, and the stirring musical score is excellent : one of the best I've heard in a long time. Had me thinking of Hans Zimmer, but it's not : it's Trevor Rabin, a name I will certainly look out for in future.

All in all, a great couple of hours. Highly recommended.

Deep Rising (1998)
8/10
Superior action
27 August 2001
Wow, this was a whole lot better than I expected ! Deep Rising is a superior action movie that borrows from a whole bunch of classics: Aliens and Starship Troopers to name the two main influences. It's very well made - the CGI monsters are great - and the script is top-notch, with more than a few laugh-out-loud moments ('there's something you don't see every day!'). The wonderful ending is like something straight out of Evil Dead III - a great way to round off an above average movie. Treat Williams is decent in the title role, and even Famke Janssen isn't too annoying !

Overall, well worth an hour or two of your time.

Heat (1995)

Don't miss it
8 July 2001
There's not a lot I can say in praise of this movie that hasn't been said before on these pages: It's one of the very best I've ever seen.

Fans of this movie should take a look at Michael Mann's 'LA Takedown', made 6 years earlier. Heat is a scene-for-scene remake of that movie, complete with a nearly identical dialogue (in fact, only the ending is slightly different). The coffee-shop scene is even included, word for word. But it's *amazing* to see the difference that the two lead actors make in the newer version, and to marvel at how far Mann has progressed in 6 years.

Wasted potential
28 April 2001
This could have been one of the greats ! Great cast, gripping storyline, a convincing love story... but it's ruined for me by two problems. First, the killer's back-story is absurd. We're expected to believe he bears a murderous grudge against blind women because... he was sent to a school for the blind as a young boy ! And second, the movie ends far too abruptly - the last minute or two left me scratching my head in confusion. A little more explanation at this point would be great. What a shame the film-makers didn't spend time tying up this interesting story a little more carefully.

That's gonna leave a mark !

Excellent ! I have to think back a *very* long time to find a film that's made me laugh quite so much. The writing is top-notch, the story is satisfying, and the entire cast is excellent - Chris Farley has never been better. One of the very best comedies of the 90s.

Underrated
19 March 2001
Parts I and III of this series have just been shown on UK TV, confirming what I've long suspected : this is a *criminally* under-rated movie, streets ahead of the original in just about every way you can imagine. It's better written, better acted, and better directed. I honestly can't think of a scarier movie - the hallway scene gets me every time !

What a shame it gets such a low score in the user ratings - the original deserves a 5, surely this is at least a 7 ?

The Game (1997)
Loved it - SPOILERS ahead
11 March 2001
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this movie. It looks magnificent, the script is witty and believable, and the plot will truly keep you guessing until the very last minute.

I find that this is one of the few films that's still enjoyable after many viewings. I think that's partly down to Michael Douglas' convincing portrayal of the snake-like billionaire anti-hero - he's had similar roles in movies such as 'Wall Street' and 'A Perfect Murder', but this is a character with much greater depth. He gets some great lines - one of my personal favourites occurs after he's lost a shoe running from the attack dogs :

= There goes a thousand dollars !

= Your shoes cost a thousand dollars ?

= That one did.

I'll admit that the plot occasionally stretches credibility, particularly in the last few minutes - the entire story centres around accepting that CRS is able to predict how Michael Douglas' character is going to react to the situation he's placed in. If you can't accept this idea, I don't think you'll have much fun with the movie.

*MAJOR* SPOILER ALERT :

Many people have criticised the ending - how could they know exactly where he'd jump from ? In defence, I've got two theories :

= First, we never see the layout of the entire rooftop - it's possible there's only place where it would be possible to climb over the edge of the roof (perhaps other directions are walled off, etc). Once Van Orton decides to jump, he has little choice about where to jump from.

= In the post-jump party, the TV actor he kidnapped at the zoo tells Van Orton, 'Thank God you jumped - if you didn't, I had to throw you off !'. You're not asked to believe that CRS *knew* he would jump - but their psychological profiling told them it was likely he *might*.

Flimsy, I know, but I think it's unfair to dismiss the whole movie as completely ludicrous based on the final few minutes.

Great movie overall, it gets 9/10 from me.

Jacob's Ladder (I) (1990)
Great movie - MAJOR SPOILER !
11 March 2001
Warning: Spoilers
Warning - big spoiler below !

I've got nothing but praise for this movie. Other reviewers have commented on the intelligent plot and fine acting - I'll just add that the director did an excellent job of building a very creepy, tense atmosphere without resorting to cheap scare tactics (Exorcist III is another film that does this very well).

I have one major problem with the plot, however (big spoiler coming up!). Towards the end, Jacob meets up with a chemist who explains that his platoon was used to field-test an experimental combat drug. Most of the movie later turns out to be a invention of Jacob's dying mind, so the entire chemist sub-plot is simply part of his fantasy. *But* the opening minutes of the movie suggest that the drug was REAL; we see Jacob get bayonetted by an US soldier. So is the BZ drug real or not ? Either way, I don't think the movie is completely consistent.

This question aside, this is well worth seeing. The DVD version is also recommended - it adds some deleted scenes and a director's commentary. 9/10 from me.

Beautiful and thought-provoking
18 August 2000
I enjoyed this movie greatly. It looks absolutely gorgeous - those lingering landscape shots are almost indescribable. I am gushing a little, but the photography here is truly special. Hans Zimmer's haunting musical score fits the mood perfectly - I'd rate it on par with his work on Gladiator.

As others have noted, this is a poetic, though-provoking movie. Some may describe it as boring - if you're looking for guns and action, go see Starship Troopers. Regarding the narrative, I'm fortunate enough never to have fought in battle, so I honestly can't say whether these soldiers' thoughts and feelings are 'realistic' or not. But the philosophical musings fit the mood of the film perfectly, and I'm glad they were included.

Unconvincing and lightweight
6 August 2000
I'm surprised this is getting such good reviews on IMDB. Admittedly, Norton's character is well acted. Gere, however, simply plays himself, with his usual well-practiced mannerisms. I found Laura Linney's character neurotic, annoying and unconvincing. There's a subplot regarding the victim's business deals which never really goes anywhere; and as for the final plot 'twist', you can see it coming a mile off. I saw this movie on TV, I would have felt cheated had I paid money to rent it.

Well worth a look
4 August 2000
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It's a well-produced, good-looking action/thriller flick with sharp, witty dialogue and great performances from the lead actors. Russell Crowe is charismatic and very watchable. I especially liked the morally ambiguous tone - Crowe's character isn't a clean-cut good guy. Well worth a look.
