The Grudge (2004)
8/10
Don't be mislead. The Grudge's story is very good.
1 November 2004
Warning: Spoilers
* No Spoilers for The Grudge * * Spoilers for The Ring *

I have read a lot of the reviews here on IMDb stating that this movie really lacks story in compared to The Ring. This isn't true. I didn't actually see The Ring until after I saw The Grudge. Some friends and I watch The Ring over Halloween weekend and I was surprised at how "not scary" it was. A friend there who had never seen it described it as "extremely intriguing" but not scary. Other than the creepy video (which really isn't that creepy compared to the one in Ringu) and dead girl's body in the closet at the beginning (which really sent chills up my spin), the movie didn't give you much of a fright until the very end. What it did give you though is spoonfuls of story -- just handed to you -- one little piece of investigation evidence at a time, until the characters and the audience understood exactly what happened. In the Grudge, it's the opposite. The Grudge scares you constantly and doesn't spoon-feed you the answer. Its there -- I thought it was obvious. Apparently a lot of people on IMDb didn't though. This movie is exceptionally well done with the Raimi brothers probably loving every minute of it. Did I mention that the movie is scary?

Long-short of it:

The Ring = Very good, Very Intriguing, Creepy The Grudge = Very good, Intriguing, Very Creepy

* Personal Experience - No Spoilers *

I saw The Grudge with a friend. We went in with the sun not quite set. There were some really good previews for some upcoming movies. I think 2005 may be a very good year for film. The Grudge started and the audience was nearly screaming in terror for the next two hours. I think I had a big smile on my face the entire time for some reason. I remember thinking to myself that I refuse to close my eyes at any point. I really wanted to experience the entire film as it was meant to be. My friend had her head in my shoulder for most of the movie. Did I mention the movie was scary? So, here's the really funny part. When the movie ended, that theater cleared out so freaking fast. I don't know if there was anything during or after the credits but no one in the theater saw it. We bolted out of there, my heart was pumping very fast. I felt like I just spent two hours on a roller-coaster (literally). We drove across the street to McDonalds because it was open and really well lit. The place was nearly empty and we were standing around waiting for our food, looking over our shoulders and at the windows to see the reflections, just all sorts of stuff like that. Anytime a door opened we both bolted an eye in that direction. I'm sure the workers thought we were going to rob the place or something. It took me many days to get the images out of my eyes. Still today, sometimes I get a little nervous to open the closet or something. More friends and I are going to go watch it again this week. It won't be as good the second time around, but I will keep an eye on my friends because that can be just as entertaining.

Finding Nemo (2003)

Nemo Found in My Heart
3 June 2003
Finding Nemo is absolutely amazing. First thing to be said is that the animation is the best to date, as should be expected from the wonderful Pixar team. The plot of this film is wonderful. It has many ups and downs, and it handles the back and forth look between the adventures of the father and the son. The script is excellent. There are many wonderful lines in the film, and never once did I feel this movie was attempting to make children's jokes. The script is very mature. The acting (animation) is wonderful. Lots of emotion visually was conveyed through the characters. The acting (voicing) is great too. All voices matched characters well and I really enjoyed the variety of stereotype voices. Voicing scene-stealer: William DeFoe's, "That never stopped me," as he displays his mutilated side. The cinematography was outstanding. Great camera angles, shots using color were beautiful, while shots that incorporated the suspense of the difficult-to-see-through water were -- well, suspenseful. Finding Nemo is funny, scary, suspenseful, thrilling, moving, and definitely entertaining. This is one of those films that people will have on their DVD rack. See it. Enjoy.

The Matrix Has You...
19 May 2003
I got to see the Matrix Reloaded on Saturday. I will discuss this the best I can without spoiling anything. Let me start with the basics.

I thought the sound, cinematography, and CG effects were outstanding. Note: I hated the visual effects in Spiderman. This was much better.

I also found the plot to be very good. I loved the twist realization Neo made at the end of the film.

The script I felt was adequate. The scenes were done in traditional fashion – Some action, some romance, etc. I feel that the directors could have gone more out on a limb and made a truly dark twisting introspective film, but they chose to make an action movie.

I felt the acting was moderate. You could make an argument that there isn't much to the characters, but I feel that Keanu Reeves could have performed the emotional torment Neo is going through with how many treat him as being the One much better than what he did. He should remember what it felt like to have his puppy dog run over by a car when he was a kid and shed some real tears on screen. I felt that Carrie-Anne Moss brought some real emotional content to Trinity. Again, I am impressed with her a second time. Morpheus' speech at the temple was done really well. Good job Laurence Fishburne. Its the only ACTING they let you actually do in these films, and it was awesome. I think by far though, the best performance in the film was Lambert Wilson as the Merovingian. Just outstanding.

I have two things to say about the script that might contradict each other. First I would like to say that I liked how the movie didn't hold your hand from scene to scene trying to explain everything. You had to really pay attention to understand who was who and what was going on, and yes, it all did make scene. I do dislike though that they put so much emphasis on their mumbo-jumbo philosophy. This movie should not, in any way, be looked at as a great work of philosophy. Most everything was cut and pasted from real intellectually accepted philosophers. I feel that anyone who walks around and says, `Oh yeah man, Matrix Reloaded is so awesome. Its such a philosophical movie,' is just really impressed with big confusing words.

Overall, I was thoroughly entertained by the film, loved the ending, really want to see the next one, and would some day own a box set of the three films. What more can I say about it.

NutraSweet...
28 February 2003
The movie, by no means, is a good movie. If you thought The Pest was funny, you would like this. If you are offended by socially acceptable racism against whites, then you would be offended by this movie. It was sorta funny -- Kinda funny -- It was LIKE funny. More like a funny substitute.

Stitches (2001 Video)

Surprisingly Good
3 December 2002
My friends and I watch a lot of movies, good and bad. Stitches is one of the diamonds in the rough kinda films. I thought it was surprisingly good. Obviously not the highest budget film, but I think the makers did a really great job with what they had. The movie had a really nice old school creepiness that I haven't seen since the computer game: The Seventh Guest. Honestly, I think this is a nice film to have in ones collection. Would make a very good Halloween party movie among friends.

Xenogears (1998 Video Game)

One big awesome story...
8 November 2002
Xenogears is a must have. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find. The graphics are not good, the sound is not good, the control doesn't matter, the music is excellent, but the story-- the story is one of the best sci-fi fantasy stories I've ever seen in a video game. Like many great unfolding stories, the plot might be very bury at the beginning. To describe everything in one word without spoiling: `coincidence.' A must have RPG.

Femme Fatale (2002)

Twisting, Shocking, and Sexy
6 November 2002
I saw this movie in Paris France in May 2002. Half the film is in English and the other half is in French. Unfortunately, I don't speak French, and the English was subtitled with French, but not the other way around. Never-the-less, I feel like I really understood everything that was going on. The movie is hauntingly sexual. Amazing cinematography really brought some of the scenes to life. A pretty well crafted twisting plot of suspense and intrigue with some really great parts and some bad parts. Overall, a very nice film. I just hope that the version released in America won't be edited. Take a special someone to go see this film.

Emotion
3 November 2002
I am a connoisseur of film, both good and bad, and I have to say that this was one of the best films I have ever seen. I have never seen a movie that conveyed emotion so well. I literally felt like I was thinking and feeling what the character felt. Adam Sandler did a very nice job as a slightly crazy person; probably not much of a stretch for him though. Overall, 10 out of 10. A must see.

The Hitcher (1986)

Not your typical '80s horror...
3 November 2002
The Hitcher is a very nice suspenseful horror film from the '80s. When I saw this movie recently, I was worried that it was going to be filled with outdated '80s pop culture, but, thankfully, it wasn't. The movie was actually very good. Probably the best coming-of-age film I've ever seen. It's scary and suspenseful, and definitely not that predictable. A great film to watch when hackers are hacks and slashers are slacking.

Killer Nerd (1991)

Worst Movie Ever
23 May 2002
My friends and I have seen a lot of bad movies. Up until now, "Tomb of the Undead" was the worst movie ever. Now, even though its dancing zombies are timeless, it must loose its crown. The new king of bad movies is "Killer Nerd." This movie was so bad in every way that I don't even have that many comments on it. It was mind-numbing bad. Like -- really REALLY bad. Just go rent it. You'll see. So bad. Just bad. Bad bad bad. Bad. :-( Nerd nerd Nerd NERD NERD! ...

Did I miss something?
16 February 2002
I'm sorry, did I miss something. Was I suppose to do some reading for this movie? So, I'm watching this movie, and thinking to myself, "Well, this seems really slow; And I don't quite get what is going on. But -- I'll go with it, and maybe it will get better." Then the movie ended. :-o !!!! This was, by far, one of the worst things I have ever seen. I watched the really infamous Dragon Ball live action rip-off movie just the night before, I was at one million times more entertained by that piece of.... Here is my understanding of the concept behind: Blood: The Last Vampire -- Okay, first of all, there is this Vampire girl that is hired by the US government to kill demons. Done. Sorry, that is about it. She kills three demons and a guy that might have been a demon. Oh, also, she has to wear a Japanese school girl outfit, even though she is not Japanese, not in a Japanese school, not a small girl, and not required to wear one by the school. *sigh* Of course, it is Japanime. This movie is very slow. The hand-drawn anime is not all that good. The CGI is good. The plot is bad. The movie is really short -- that is a good thing, I guess. Overall... kill me! I'm going to go take a shower now, because I feel dirty.

Ballet of the Undead
8 December 2001
Well, I have to give these zombies credit for one thing. They are sure the fastest zombies I've ever seen. They like to run in really fast from the darkness, dance around for a little bit, swing a pick-axe in the general direction of a person, then dance away. I'm still not sure how, but the person always seems to die. They probably can't wait to get out of this bad movie. My personal favorite heckle was about the prison itself. Chicken wire does not count as a prison. LOL I like the part when the zombie has to cut a wire with the ax. I'm just thinking, "Oh come on, it is like spider web!" Nothing I can say can possible describe the horror that I felt when I watched this movie. I suggest everyone watch this movie at least once in your life. Don't worry, it is only like thirty minutes long.

Lost Highway (1997)

I Figured Out "The Lost Highway!"
22 January 2001
Warning: Spoilers
I FIGURED IT OUT! I know what the lost highway is about. Now, here is the real plot of the movie: SPOILER ALERT!!! Fred Madison (Bill Pullman) is a depressed blues musician in an unhappy marriage. He finds out that his wife, Rene Madison (Patricia Arquette) has secretly been doing porno movies with Dick Laurent (Robert Loggia) and Andy (Michael Massee) after someone mails him a video tape of her in a sexual act. Fred looses it and kills his wife. He is convicted of murder and goes to jail. He escapes his prison cell through the ceiling and breaks out of jail. He tracks down Andy at his porno pimp pad, and kills him. Then he finds Dick Laurent in a motel room having sex. He captures him, drives him out to the desert and shoots him to death. Now, the big thing is, the movie isn't supposed to be about the real plot, it is about what the murderer, Fred, thinks in a split second. The movie actually takes place all in a fraction of a second, that is why "Dick Laurent is dead" is at the beginning of the movie and the end. Fred has a mental problem that has put him in a state of confusion. He's gone insane, and so he keeps seeing all these different "possible" realities about what happened. Fred states that he doesn't like video cameras because he likes to remember things in his own way, not how they actually happened. That is why the video of him is him killing his wife, where at that point in the movie, he hadn't killed her yet. And at the end, The Mysterious Guy goes after Pete (Fred's imaginary identity) with a video camera, and when he does that, he turns back into Fred. I thought of all this while I was in the shower this morning. Tell me what you think about it? (Oh, and to be totally honest, I guessed at the character of "Andy." If that wasn't the guy, please excuse me. It might have been "Al" or "John Doe" or whatever.)
