Passionate, convincing...a potential hit!
18 October 2005
After watching the pilot of this TV show, I'm convinced that CBS have a winner on their hands. The lead character, Annabeth Chase, played by the talented Jennifer Finnigan, is portrayed as a realistic working mum. On her first day back at work, she has to deal with a difficult case and also her emotions regarding her baby whom she misses. She's also unyielding in her resolve to bring the perpetrator of a heinous crime to justice and Finnigan plays Annabeth with a wealth of fiery passion that is lacking in most other shows on air at the moment.

Though it feels at times that it might be bordering on melodrama, it never crosses the line. The writing for this pilot was top-notch and though there is always room for improvement, it was a delight and a breath of fresh air. I hope this series will be picked up for a full season by CBS because it would be a waste should it be cancelled.

CSI: Miami (2002–2012)
6/10
It's perfectly alright.
7 November 2004
CSI: Miami may never compare to the greatness of its predecessor, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation but all in all, it's still a great show. Engaging and definitely not humourless, it's a perfect spin-off. Things in Miami are definitely not the same in Las Vegas so don't expect the same things.

Like Gil Grissom, David Caruso's character Horatio Caine is somewhat aloof but still extremely perceptive of the things around him. Although I have no problem with David playing the role, he doesn't exude the sense of warmness that I feel when I watch William L. Peterson.

But the other actors are great to watch, especially Emily Procter in her role as Calleigh Duquesne, the bubbly street-smart ballistics expert. She gives this show its balanced dose of quirkiness the same way Jorja Fox does in her role of Sara in CSI.

The story lines are incredibly solid and delivered with precision. Unlike CSI, we slowly learn a bit more about each character's personal life making them much more realistic to me. Calleigh's childhood was explored and so was Horatio's past. I find it great that the show is becoming well-rounded. A show of emotion is also not a foreign concept in Miami.

I will never forget this scene of Khandi Alexander's character, Alexx, reading her children a bedtime story while barely keeping it together. Might not sound like much but it was hard-hitting.

All in all, it's alright. You might not enjoy it as much as the original but then again, who knows? You might.

The O.C. (2003–2007)
8/10
A rare gem for FOX.
2 August 2004
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the most enjoyable television shows out there right now. Held up by a terrific script and good performances from its cast week after week, it sucks you in and just doesn't let go. Every character is different and the parents are at the center of their own story lines which makes this show already different from Beverly Hills 90210.

Set in the beach community of Newport Beach, California, the life of having it all is no longer something special. For Ryan Atwood, a newbie to the lifestyles of the extremely rich, it gets a little overwhelming. When Sandy Cohen takes him in for the weekend after his alcoholic mother throws him out after he spends a night in juvenile hall (for being an accomplice to his big brother's attempt to steal a car), things change for everybody. Although hesitant at first, Kirsten Cohen, Sandy's wife, relents.

In the Cooper household, things are decidedly fishy when feds keep knocking day after day on the door wanting to talk to Jimmy Cooper, a very successful financial planner. Marissa takes note of her father's troubles as he assures her there's nothing wrong when she has to cover for him and lie to the feds. Jimmy's obvious distress is also noticed by Kirsten, his ex-flame, at the fashion show fundraiser and he breaks down in the men's bathroom, not realising Ryan heard him. We also meet Jimmy's wife, the blissfully ignorant, Julie and her younger daughter, Kaitlin.

Quickly introduced to the life of a Newport resident after he gets an invitation to the fashion show fundraiser by Marissa, Ryan also as quickly gets into trouble with the local "trust-fund" kids who don't take kindly to outsiders who dare to question them when he saves a drunken Seth Cohen, Sandy and Kirsten's only child, from them. That same night, he also discovers Marissa abandoned by her two best friends, Holly Fischer and Summer Roberts, passed out on her driveway and without her house keys. As he does a second rescue by carrying Marissa to the Cohens' poolhouse to sleep off the alcohol in her system, Kirsten goes hysterical when she discovers her son half-drunk and bruised from his beatings the next day and tells Sandy that Ryan has to go. Ryan understands and Sandy drives him back to his hometown to Chino only to find his house barren and stripped of any belongings. Abandoned by his mother and left with only a note explaining, Sandy brings Ryan back to Newport Beach.

And so ends the pilot episode. Amassing a total of high-rated 27 episodes in its first season, The O.C.'s appeal is undeniable and is more than a guilty pleasure. The characters grow in every episode in every way possible and you'll really know what they mean when the producers claim that "nothing is as what it seems" in this show. Try watching an episode of the second season. I'm sure you'll know what I mean.

Titanic (1997)

Very brilliant and captivating movie...
13 December 2000
This movie really put you at a loss for words. I especially like the character, Rose DeWitt Bukater played by Kate Winslet. This is because I can totally relate to what she was going through before she met Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio). Her mother was always worrying about money and class. Her fiance, Cal Hockley, cared only about what he wanted and didn't think much of the lower standard people. Jack really guided her and made her happy.
