3 Body Problem: Judgment Day (2024)
Ridiculous!
Let me get this straight - They wanted to take the servers from the ship, and they couldn't attack the ship with special forces, because it would be "a massacre and it will give the people on the ship time to destroy the servers". So instead they conjured up the "genius" plan to slice it up with sci-fi fibers, massacring everyone on board and destroying the servers.
And of course the important data was on a small drive (as we all know, room size servers store all their data on an single drive) and it survived the wreckage and the fire of the ship that conveniently parked itself on the shore after being sliced to pieces.
And sure, "the aliens wanted them to have the drive". But they did not know that, they did not come up with this insane plan with the knowledge that magical chance will make sure it works.
On top of that, when they saw that the scientist, who invented the sci-fi fibers, had doubts about the morality of this massacre, they let her watch it all happening and even take a walk around the debris and have a good look at the body parts lying around.
Who writes this stupidity? Madness!
The Last Kingdom (2015)
Not my cup of tea
I watched the first 8 episodes and gave up. It felt generic to me, and it was full of unlikable characters. I understand it's supposed to be historical and those where the times and the people, but still doesn't make me want to watch it. I did not click with the main character from the beginning, but the high votes the show has made me stick with it, hoping things will get better. There were some glimpses of hope at one point, some hints that there is some growth with him, but no, he just got dumber and dumber with each episode. And after yet another army sneak attack I couldn't stand the whole thing any more.
Twin Peaks: The Return: Part 8 (2017)
Nope
This is what happens when an artist is surrounded by yes-men.
The original Twin Peaks had its weird elements, but it made sense. Its story telling was the art. This episode goes all in on the weird, and forgets to make any sense. It tries to be art so hard that it forget to be anything else.
And again with the nuclear weapons, "the root of all evil". Bath tubes have killed more people in the last 80 or so years, ladders have killed more people, cherry pie has probably killed more people. But nuclear weapons go boom, so run away people, here comes the mushroom cloud.
I don't know what's with the 10/10 ratings. I assume there are drugs involved. But I don't judge, you do you.
Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan (2021)
How to get away with crime
Wow, the dude played the system like a fiddle. Got away with 4 rapes, sneaked it a couple of murders for flavor, and ended up making money and living a cushy life. Just because a few ambitious doctors decided to make careers from his case. They even caught him lying about all of it, by avoiding to speak Croatian with one of his doctors and faking an Arabic letter. And they still let him go, because he had "fused" his personalities. Stunning stuff.
The documentary is not very well made. They gloss over some important points, and don't ask the witnesses some important questions. There is interesting footage of his talks with the doctors, but that's about it.
The Ripper (2020)
Well made
Interesting documentary about a case I hadn't heard before. It's well laid out, with plenty of historical footage and interviews of people directly and indirectly involved.
A fascinating look at the society in the 70s as well. The way the police was working, the way the people reacted.
The low score reviews complaining about the blame thrown at the police and the feminist angle are funny. Considering that it was that same police, not the current "woke police", but the 70s police that admitted the investigation was completely botched. And that prejudice toward women was the primary reason for the majority of the mistakes made, especially at the initial stages.
Girl in the Picture (2022)
Heartbreaking story
These crime documentaries are almost always sad to watch, but this one was particularly heavy. I think the authors did a good telling the story. And I'm glad there was some closure at the end.
I noticed in some of the review people complaining that there were questions left unanswered, as if the authors of the documentary could just find the solutions. Like the identity of Michael's father. Floyd could have already started to pimp her, so the father could've been a client, or maybe a random boy from the high school. Pretty much impossible to find out, considering they don't even have Michel's body for a DNA sample.
Some are questioning (almost blaming) why Susanne didn't ask for help. I find that baffling. Most victims of domestic abuse, especially children, don't talk about it. Some blame themselves for what's happening. It's just such a severe trauma that a young human brain is unable to process it while it's happening. And Floyd was essentially her father, not some random guy. Her mother married him when Suzanne was very young, and then she just disappeared and left her with him. She could've been afraid to talk about it. What if no one believes her? Then she will end up back home alone with the abusive guy she just tried to get in serious trouble. There are so many reasons why she would just obey him and try to minimize in her mind the abuse she's being subjected to.
From her high school friend, who says witnessed her being raped and was afraid to say anything, to her biological father who had decided he can't take care of 3 children at the age of 23. These are such complex situations, that throwing blame is beyond silly.
Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan (2021)
Flashy but a bit shallow
Good production quality, and decent detail about the battles and conflicts of that age. The personal aspect feels a bit neglected. Every warlord they focus on feels pretty much the same monster, not much detail about their personalities and their relationships beyond the various battles. But maybe there are not much historical accounts about that.
Many of the accounts, I assume historically authentic, feel like something written by the victor. You can pretty much tell who's about to win a battle by the way it's portrayed. They are pretty much always "outnumbered", but they are "fighting valiantly", or they pull out a surprising move that no one has done before. And somehow all these warlords were always in the thick of the battle, but somehow always remained among the last men standing, sometimes literally the last man standing. Most of it felt like someone's fantasy tales.
There's also a lot, and I mean A LOT of romanticizing. "Greatest swords ever made", "greatest warriors", "greatest battle"... The historians in the show would speak about someone as being a great tactician and then talk about events that feel more like a barbarian butcher mayhem than military campaigns. "Greatest warriors the world has known" and then show an absolute blunder of an invasion in Korea.
Diabolik (2021)
He killed Roberto
What a weird movie. Our "hero" was a serial murderer, and clearly a domestic abuser. Whoever made this think had a strange moral compass.
The acting was ok, and visually the movie look nice. But the plot is mighty generic. I'm not sure if the point was not actually to be some sort of a spoof comedy. I was expecting Austin Powers to jump out at any moment. Alas he's not in the movie, so the only comedy comes from a few absurd moments. It made me laugh out loud when the guy was telling the new girl that he's not a man who leaves women, just after he was telling her he's going to leave his wife for her.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
3 Episodes in - an OK
So far it's decent. Some parts I liked - like Nori's plot and the short sections with Elrond. Arondir's building up well too. Galadriel is rather unlikable though. I'm not sure if that's intentional, to develop her later and let her earn the viewer's sympathy, or just a bad writing. But in any case it's strange to have what is essentially the show's protagonist have such a bad start. And speaking of bad starts - Halbrand. Bloody hell, are they going after the cliche romance crowd? Madness!
The Production quality is top notch. CGI, costumes, props, it all looks great. I'm not an expert on acting, so I can't judge that. But so far no actor has looked bad to my eyes.
Gonna watch some more and see how it goes.
Prey (2022)
Simply boring
Not a big fan of the Predator, I barely remember the original movie. What I remember though is that there were some cool characters. And when the Predator was hunting and killing them, it was impactful. There's nothing like this here. The main character and her brother were the only ones with some personality, albeit both pretty generic. So pretty much everyone and everything the Predator kills is a nobody that you just met and cannot care less about.
And of course at the end there is a showdown between the girl and the Predator. And this is the part that bothered me the most. Why couldn't she just outsmart him? Why couldn't she just be smart? Why is being smart not enough for these people? Ugh...
Anyway. Don't waste your time with this movie, you already know what will happen, you already know how it will happen. You know the plot, you know the message. You've seen it dozens of times already.
Formula 1: Drive to Survive (2019)
Doesn't show much beyond what you already see on TV
Watched the 4th season of this just after seeing MotoGP Unlimited, and this one is way worse. It shows very little from the behind the scene activities. It's mostly what you already see on TV, plus some extra interviews with some of the protagonists. And while MotoGP Unlimited was pretty much entirely focused on the drivers, this one was mostly about the dirt bags Toto and Horner, and how much they hate each other. The continuity is also off, it just back and forth between races and teams, instead of smoothly following the season.
Chernobyl (2021)
Just boring
A movie about the toxic relationship of a young couple, set in the the time of the Chernobyl disaster. Not sure why they even named it this way. The nuclear incident is neither shown in detail, nor historically accurate. It's just a background for this drama attempt.
And I'm not sure what's this criticism about the movie being a propaganda. There were some subtle things, but nothing compared to what Hollywood is doing for half a century already.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (2021)
A good one
Initially I was very worried about the heavy anime style, with the over the top fights and crazy magic, but that wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. Oh, it was bad, but the good story and characters overshadowed it. The plot was nice, with good twists and lively characters. Although some of the events do contradict a lot of the original materials. The way the attack on Kaer Morhen happened, for example. Like, come on, this negates an essential point of Sapkowski's work. But I'm choosing to look at it as a nice fanfic, not an official prequel.
Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (2021)
Faithful with its absurdity
Your typical Resident Evil nonsense plot, with some mediocre 3D visuals, poor animating and abysmal writing.
The only good thing was Leon's hair. They should've focused their efforts there and make a nice Head & Shoulders advertisement.
Midnight in the Switchgrass (2021)
Disaster on all fronts
What a pile of garbage this movie is. I cannot believe a group of people got together and produced such a horrible movie. No one in the team told them this is bad? Not even a since person raised concerns that this is not worth putting your name under?
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Not bad
A decent movie, despite the Chinese propaganda - "we should all be united into one Kumantra, especially that island that is divided artificially from the land!"
Gorgeous visuals, nice music, and a good story for children.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Decent action movie
An entertaining action movie, but you really need to turn off your brain to enjoy it. Because there is some major nonsense in it, especially at the end.
Still there is good amount of shooting and blowing up cool looking alien creatures. So if you need something to pass 2 hours of free time, this movie is a good choice.
Mulan (2020)
Generic
A prime lesson how to gut out a classic animation and turn it into a generic low-fantasy movie. The movie is your typical Chinese production - a semi-historical, semi-realistic setting, with a sprinkle of absurd fantasy elements on top. As well as the usual melodrama and patriotic gibberish. There's a ton of mix messaging and tonal changes in the movie. In one scene Mulan is presented as some chi ninja wunderkind, in the next she's training hard alongside her fellow soldiers. In one moments she's kicked out of the army for being a woman, in the next she's leading the army in defense of the emperor. There's a side character that is probably the most inconsistent and ridiculous character I've seen in a movie. There was not a single scene in the movie with this character that didn't make me shake my head in disbelief.
Disney really wanted to get the Chinese market with this one. And I guess they did a good job at it, you can hardly get more Chinese than this.
Warrior Nun (2020)
The hell was that?
Making a show for teens doesn't mean you should let a teen write it. And if the writer wasn't actually a teen... well, find another job, dude. The first two episodes had so many plot holes, I thought I could see what's inside my monitor. And the rest is just going through the YA checklist and ticking every possible box.
Oh, and something else. The girl, the main character, lived for a decade in an orphanage in Malaga, and she doesn't know about the football club Malaga. Let me repeat this - She lived for 10 years in a city in Spain, and didn't know of the local football team! Forget the daemons and the superpowers, this is the most fantastical thing in the whole show.
The Vast of Night (2019)
A decent high-school project
This was a decent graduation project of a guy who may one day end up making movies. Not sure who let it air on Prime, but whatever. Congrats to the guy, and I hope he got a good grade for the efforts.
Vikings (2013)
What a boring show.
I don't get it, was I supposed to sympathize with any of these murderers and thieves? Funny that one of the reviews here calls it "a medieval Godfather". Only Godfather works because despite the characters being scumbag mobsters, they show some humanity, some personal code of honor. The main character here is some permanently drugged psycho, whose only redeeming quality is that he loves his family (hooray for him). And despite that, the show could've been at least interesting, if it was cleverly written. But it isn't. There are so many plot-holes that if this show was one of them viking boats, it would've sank the moment it hits water.
Underwater (2020)
Yeah, the movie is bad, but...
So the movie is pretty bad, you don't need me to say it. But it was the ending that disappointed me the most. So there's this new specie at the bottom of the ocean, with some glimpses of intellect in the way they behaved. And what does our "heroine" decide to do at the end? Blow them the f up! Why? Why would you do that? To save the world from a bunch of slightly evolved octopuses? Ugh!..
To Your Last Death (2019)
A lot of gore and little else.
A gory spectacle without much else going on. There's a plot stitching together all the blood and intestines, but it's pretty thin. So, if you really crave some animated torture and killing, go see a doctor. If he doesn't help, you can watch this movie to get your fill, I guess.
Altered Carbon: Resleeved (2020)
Well, it was an anime...
Over the top action, good visuals, rather predictable melodramatic story, a whole bunch of annoying characters, and a little girl. There's always a little girl.
1917 (2019)
A war movie.
This could've been more interesting if it was the first war movie I've seen. But as it stands now, it's just yet another war, drama movie. Well shot, well acted, well produced... but it offers nothing new or fresh. Same good allied soldiers, bad Germans, sad war drama, heroic deeds. If you've seen one of these movies, you've seen them all.
