All in the Family (1971–1979)
10/10
Best of TV sitcoms
14 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Archie Bunker was obnoxious, arrogant, narrow-minded, bigoted, mean, mouthy, opinionated, and just downright rude and uncouth, but one thing....... Ya gotta love the guy! Now I'm not much of a TV fan, but All in the Family is definitely in the top bracket for me. Hands down, my favorite TV sitcom. Norman Lear was no doubt taking a big chance on this one when he created it, considering the time in which it was made. But it was absolutely brilliant! Fantastic TV show, and even after 30 some-odd years it's stood the test of time, because it was so good. It would be very hard for me if my father-in-law constantly called me meat-head. Boy that would drive me crazy!

Anyone who hasn't seen it, highly recommended.

This gritty flick was very good for its time
4 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I saw Across 110th St. many years ago and to this day it's one of my favorite crime flicks of the 70s, right up there with The Godfather, Serpico, and Dirty Harry. If you're gonna make a movie about the gritty, dangerous hardcore mafia underworld, you shouldn't sugar-coat it in any way. IMHO this is the best thing this movie has going for it: it's realism. There's no Hollywood-style heroism here, just human nature at its worst. Psychopathic Mafia hit-man, corrupt cop on the take, brutal violence, ruthless crime bosses, greedy crooks, all told without soft-core political correctness. Movies of this type really should show the mob society as it is, without coloration, that's how they make an impact on their audience. This one, I must say, does a pretty good job at that. Not perfect, mind you, I also thought Franciosa's character was a little over the top, but good. My rating: 10/10

Also if you don't like sadistic violence, don't see this one. See Law and Order

I liked this movie, reasonable attempt to tell both sides of the story
31 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Like was said here, never mind the small-minded, politically correct critics. Gods & Generals was a very good, and as far as I can tell, accurate movie about the Civil War. To address the critics who think it's biased toward the Confederacy, most of what I've learned in school about this period in American history, as well as most of the movies I've seen on the same, tell the story from the Union side, vilifying the South. So it was refreshing to see a movie that shows the Confederate point of view, while not forgetting the Union side. The Confederate army fought for their homeland, their wives and children, and for what they believed was right. Same can be said for the Union. Spoiler: Really pay attention to the scenes where Stonewall Jackson interacts with his Negro friend who is in charge of the Union POWs. They pray to God together one night, and the Negro friend prays that slavery can end in the South, and Jackson agrees with him. Many in the South wanted this wretched institution to end. This movie blows away many misunderstandings and myths about the South, and it is well worth watching. An open mind is a must to watch this movie and enjoy it, as well as a willingness to put away longstanding preconceived ideas IMHO. My rating........9/10

United 93 (2006)

Very moving film
21 May 2006
This was a very honest film, no glitz, gleam, snazzy cheesy Hollywood crud. I respect and applaud Director Greengrass for letting the story tell itself. As has been mentioned, the cast of unknown actors was a brilliant move on Mr. Greengrass's part. It lent an air of authentic realism to the movie, which made the story genuine and real. You actually felt the uneasiness and tension, which I think was the whole point. I felt shocked and numb the day it happened, and I felt the exact same way after this movie. I can unequivocally say that this film is not Hollywood exploitation of a tragedy, there's no action heroes here, no Michael Moore-like conspiracy-theory, just the honest truth. A film that every American should see, lest we forget.

Volcano (1997)
Kinda dumb, I thought
17 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Volcano was just another dumb disaster flick, I thought.

They wouldn't be bad if they were a little more realistic.

Case in point: The scene where the eruption just begins. Somebody gets trapped between a fallen burning tree and the lava flow. The firefighters use their truck ladder to rescue them, and they're hanging over the lava flow. Now I've read that molten rock reaches temperatures of 6000 degrees F. I also read in one textbook when I was in school that it can get as high as 21,000. But whether it's 6,000 or 21,000, I don't think you could hang over it like that without getting burnt to a crisp. And the ladder melting and the people not getting even singed? Sure. And also the scene where the lava flow goes into the house and the dog goes up to it and sniffs it? Come on! I saw on a documentary once about the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii and there was a ranger station or something made out of logs. A lava flow went under the building and within 60 seconds that whole building was engulfed in flames, like kindling. There is no freak' way that that lava flow could even touch that house with the dog without that happening. You can't even get close to a lava flow without wearing special fireproof gear. A dog would not even get close to it. Too hot, I think. Agree or disagree?

Corny movie, utterly ridiculous, like most of the movies of this type coming out of Hollywood today.

Hollywood, make your disaster movies more compelling and realistic, and you may get better reviews. Just my take
