The Poison Rose (2019)
we need more "noir"
At a time when 2/3 of movies are made for the Hindu and the Chinese and the American preteen set and maybe some Trumpster geniuses; it is apalling to see some of yolur reviewers call it trash and disparage Travolta's looks, pray that you look that good at 67. Look around aging actors. i like the noir style. Farewell my Lovely. among the non Marvel studios epiics or the Fantasy chldish wasterf of time are the independent movies that depict the crumbling American working classs and the families. Hey Redford, there are stories to be told about that part of America immersed in opioids and self hate; Hillary hate and conspiracy theories and love of guns. There are stories to be writen about the fantastic women that engineered the landslide in 2018. and within them the stories of AOC, Omar, the first American Indian out of Kansas of all place. These.storries tell of an America of many colors, men and women proud to be both Americann and of color and linked to the rest of the world;parts of the world that are far from ideal yet produce smart and beautiful people like Rep. Omar.
The Shape of Water (2017)
Another beauty? and the beast. How original?
I am so glad that all the fancy language of proffesional reviwers did not affect the opinion of the sane reviewers and it stilll got oscars. Are we reaching that stage in the growth of an art where almost everyhing worth saying has been said and out of boredom we applaud the nonsensical, the absurd, the empty effort simply because it is differrent from the average movie. Then we gett the fviewers who will spinn an avalanche of words that will make little if ny sense. if they'rre paid by the number of words; they have earned their keep. To the rest of us they have failed miserably and made us waste our time.Went to see Interstellar twice and was bored both times. Some movies have little to say no matter how many reviewers revere the director.
Mogliamante (1977)
A woman's awakening and a husband's discovery.
I too was thrilled to discover this gem. The voyeurism, Laura's innocent eroticism so obvious in Malizia comes through and is just right for a story of sexual awakening. The idea of a woman following her husband's sexual escapades and taking revenge by initiating her own shows that a woman's liberation from the morays of her time was possible even in the 19th Century.
The use of Albinioni's Adagio is very appropriate as it imparts a sadness and languorous aura that fits the story particularly Marcello's longing and resignation. This how you make an erotic film that tops the soft porno of the Emmanuelle series.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
Sheer nonsense about a man who is born old and that's all you need to know to walk out of the theater
This movies is to cinema art what abstract painting is to painting!!!
A man born old are we supposed to identify with this ...be even remotely. Why not have a movie about how angels marry we would have about the same interest.
The movie is technically brilliant and has great acting, so are all the Star War movies ...Technical brilliance is evident in most movies today, so is good acting Hey Hollywood a good movie must first have a STORY . Something to say that is meaningful to our existence.
What a waste of good actors and talent. Fincher must be the new David Lynch...
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
Fantasy gone berserk
I can't believe that movies like that are made, let alone result in great reviews and sequels etc.. First off, if you have not seen the previous episodes forget about making sense out of it. I thought there was an unwritten rule that you are supposed to say what has happened in previous episodes if it is important to know them to understand the action in the present movie. This utter contempt for the viewer who may want to catch up withe episodes. But why bother? Whatever the story might have been seems to be totally incoherent and relying on a massive suspension of disbelief. I can go up to a point in suspension of disbelief but a multiplicity of Johnny Depp's come now are we all five year olds. Pirates coming back from the dead, when did that genre gravitate from swashbuckling and chivalry to zombies and the netherworld. Which brings me to my last comments; what a giant waste of talent. The creation of children's movies (for adults with child level stupor ) now means that serious actors end up playing foolish unbelievable yarns. That's sad. I've seen Depp in good movies like the Libertine and Chocolat. Is he really that hard up for money that he has to play stuff that requires all the skills of an actor in a "grand guignol" sort of play. This movie is prototypical of the state of the industry, a ton of money spent to create a bad children's movie. Harry Potter, Shrek, spider Man, Superman, Batman 28 Weeks Later, Cars. If we like that kind of entertainment, it's no wonder we are fast asleep as a nation in fantasy when a war of aggression is perpetrated by our leaders.
