Decent but not very memorable

Warning: Spoilers
The movie held my attention and I appreciate that it worked in a good amount of story but the fighting was average and I felt like they totally botched one of the biggest moments of the film which was when Nana was killed. Her death barely seemed to have any emotional impact on any of the characters and that really bothered me. Still though...if they release a sequel I'll probably watch it.

Strong Direction but Doesn't Stick the Landing
7 August 2020
This movie had a lot of potential, but eventually stumbles and falls off a cliff. Starts really strong and has some solid cinematography but some of the characters' decisions will have you face palming pretty hard. It's worth watching, but not revisiting. I'll definitely keep an eye on the director, would be nice to see what he can do with a more solid plot

Straightforward and Effective

Phenomenal film! This is a straight up drama about a dude and his daughter that live in the woods. You'll never be on the edge of your seat, but you might draw a tear. As usual, i'll encourage you not to watch the trailer. I'm awarding it an 8/10.

Visually Attractive Mess of a Story
2 August 2020
Beautifully cinematography.....minus the multitude of slow motion shots that appear to be filmed at 20fps.

The film's biggest flaw is the completely befuddled storyline. The movie is clearly supposed to be about The Grandmaster (Ip Man) but there's virtually no development to his character, not to mention the second half of the movie is about his female rival, Gong, who essentially overtakes him as the main character. You learn about her background and life and future and have sympathy for her etc.....and then The Grandmaster just kind of makes an appearance at the end and is the exact same person from the beginning so I really dont know what the Director was thinking.....especially considering the apparent fact that this movie spent 10 years in production.

Regardless, it's well worth watching. In addition to it looking very nice, I appreciated the pacing and attention to displays of emotion that contrasted the fight scenes. Ultimately it held my attention throughout the duration of the film. It'd be nice if there was a spin-off about Gong. Her character was by far the most interesting aspect of this film.

I award it a 68.5%

Souless Intense Violence That's Fun To Look At
2 August 2020
I watched The Raid last night and although it was quite impressive for a number of reasons, I didnt care for it and found my attention drifting towards the end.

Maybe i just wasn't in the mood for it at the moment, I dunno. I think I just need more connection to the characters so that I actually care what happens to them and the raid had zero character development. I wasn't invested in the story at all, didnt care who lived or died and was generally indifferent.

But, it was definitely an impressive display of cinematography, realisticly choreographed (I suppose), interestingly brutal and overall unique enough to stand out as something worth watching when you're in the mood for artfully filmed intense violent action. In consideration of those merits I award it a 70%
