ABCD (1999)
Pitiful excuse for a movie
Once you've seen the movie you have to stop and ask yourself something. What the hell was it? Was it a comedy? If so why wasn't it funny? Was it a drama? If that was the case where the hell did the plot go? Nothing is accomplished in this movie. Most movies either result in the end with something either being gained, or else something being lost. This movie didn't go anywhere: It started out with one screwed up sister, and a shady (but likeable) brother. It ended with a screwed up sister, and a shady (no-longer likeable) brother. Generally when an inconclusive ending is presented it is because the producers are leaving you something to play with or leaving room for a sequel. This left an inconclusive ending, but there's nothing to think about and there's no place for a sequel (Thank God). The movie started off strong, creating several conflicts and gradually weaving possibilities of a correlated ending. But it all went to waste because absolutely no avenue was taken by any of the characters that served to any major benefit or disbenefit (one or the other is important, as long as it keeps things moving). The dialogue was ridiculous, and the actors and actresses recite them as ridiculously. There is only one scene in the entire movie where the dialogue was deeper than a paper-cut, and that all went to waste too. Another occurence that gave rise to emotions (an unfortunate death) was completely wasted also. So basically, what did the producer (the same guy directed and wrote it, I wouldn't be surprised if his family did all the acting and the cooking and provided the ties) intend out of this? If he wanted to waste time atleast he could have cranked the humor up and made it fun, instead he made it depressing and astounding. I am not an Indian, or a Hindu, but I can easily imagine why people of both those categories would be brutally insulted by some of the scenes in this movie. What's sad about that is that the writer (also the producer and director, as I mentioned before) is Indian and Hindu also. If the dude wanted to violate Indian and Hindu customs he could have drawn conclusiveness and purpose to it, he didn't bother doing that so what can I say? I wasn't Confused until I actually saw this movie!
C'est arrivé près de chez vous (1992)
Euro-Disney of psychotic tendencies
If you were breath-taken by "Natural Born Killers" then you'll be quadraplegic by the end of this one! Though it is all in French there are subtitles at the bottom for English. But if you want, you don't even have to look at the bloody subtitles, the movie is still hype! This is an incredibly artistic movie! The main character is hilariously calm, poetic, and enthusiastic while doing the most psychotic things. I really can't say much about this movie, except that you better go and get it. Though the subject is dark humor it does not seem dark at all! It is dreadfully interesting and entertaining.
Darkman (1990)
batman meets garfield
Call me crazy but I could not take this movie more seriously than a cartoon from start to end. That does not mean it's not interesting, but it's just not smart of the producers to have that effect and then explore the characters' depth because it creates an annoying atmosphere. This movie starts out real good, Robert Durant's entrance into the film is fairly memorable, but everything goes downhill slowly. The one big plus is that there are some scenes which are humorous, the fact that I can't figure out whether they were meant to be humorous or not cannot be a good thing, but like I said, it's a cartoon so what's going to stop me from laughing?!
Evil Dead II (1987)
Swallow this!
This movie is like a Kandinsky meets, or perhaps eats, Alfred Hitchcock type of movie. What the heck does that mean??!! It means take the suspense from a Hitchcock movie and throw it around into a tale of something so abstract, absurd, and irrational you have no clue what you're dealing with but all you know is that it's edge of your seat fun. It all works in the end, and this movie is easily a cult classic. I warn you, do not watch this movie with a working and analytical brain because you will crunch it up and toss it out. Nothing means anything in this movie! It's just good ol' sick fun. And when I say sick, believe me I mean sick, there are fountains of blood and very graphic scenes of decapitation and just about everything else! The name Ash instantly become that of a superhero, and quite frankly he is one of my favorite! There are many memorable qoutes you'll here from this movie, my favorite is definitely when the monster starts yelling "I'll swallow your soul..." and Ash put a shotgun to its head and says "swallow this" in a calm, matter-o-factly kind of voice!! If you're a synic, a pessimist, or a realist stay away from this one. But if you're crazy then watch this and you will be crazier by the end!
American Psycho (2000)
american psycho, stay away from me
If you haven't read the book and you've watched the movie, chances are you didn't appreciate the movie as much as it should be. I'm not saying it's good, or bad, I'm just saying that there are alot of things that you miss out on understanding if you haven't read the book. Just like the book, the atmosphere of intensity in certain situations is amplified to a drastically hopeless decibal. The most interesting scene is the shooting rampage towards the end. This movie is not really a horror movie, or even a thriller, in a way it is a satire. The author Brett Easton Ellis satires just about everything. The ending to this movie is played off of a certain interpretation of the book, though you probably got the ending in the movie it is much more difficult to understand the ending of the book. In the book it is left very vague, like shakespeares play Hamlet, it's left open to a dozen philosophies. It's up to you which one you choose. Christian Bale was perfect for the role he was in, it was very specified in the book that Patrick Bateman is supposed to be a handsome, classy character who reads the Gentleman's Quarterly (GQ) on a very regular basis. Patrick Bateman was believable as that figure. One thing I must specify on, In the wicked magazine some guy left a comment saying that Christian Bale was no good for the role, he was too soft looking. Well, that was the whole point, Patrick Bateman is not like Joe Spinnell in Maniac, though some of his actions are similar. Patrick Bateman is everything you look for in a guy, extremely wealthy, ambitious, intelligent, polished, tasteful, good looking, etc. He is not someone who you develop fear for, and that's the irony, because underneath all that he is an all American psycho!
Psycho (1960)
lock the door next time you take a shower
I gave this movie a 10, not out of sheer unjudging infatuation of the movie or of Alfred Hitchcock. I gave this movie a 10 with a very clear and unbiased viewing. So believe me when I say: this movie is very best of its field. The scenes are amazing, everything must have been very intricately imagined by Hitchcock because everything had maximum effect. Mr. Hitchcock very brilliantly considered all aspects of the movie, even the fact that he had it shot in black and white meshes together so very well. The villaian is so believable you can almost taste his sweat and franticness. So are the victims, you can taste their pain. The murder scene in the shower is the BEST murder scene I have ever seen in my life. And believe me, I have seen loads of movies to choose from. The murder scene made Argento's murder scenes look like Sesame Street. There was an editing of a scene which showed nudity, many people complained about this but I salute the MPAA for cutting out the nudity scene. This movie is pure, it does not need even a flash of nudity. I want you all to understand one thing, recently they remade this movie with a newer cast, more money, color, etc. and they could still not come close to touching the power Psycho had. It is not just because it's a remake either, it's because something was completely missing. This movie is unbeatable in its field.
