Evocative of the Spain I remember as a kid with my parents around 1970. It has a big heart and is often funny and thoughtful.

I first watched this movie more than 30 years ago when it was billed as the classic that it is. I admired it rather than enjoyed it then. Beautifully shot in a timeless and genuinely awe inspiring setting and doubtless one of John Ford's and John Wayne's best from a movie making point of view. It is, and always was, full of clichés and racism. Today we are much more sensitive to these injustices than when I first watched it in the 1980s. This is a movie which has badly aged and makes for less than enjoyable viewing. An interesting contrast to 2020's News of the World.
