Shredded (2020)
Is the chase better than the catch?
Shredded is the second Stolerman film I've watched. While it partially shares the underlying theme of The Dreamers' Field, it has no relation to it whatsoever. Perhaps it is the tragic human existence that intertwines them, as it often does.
Without adding too many spoilers, I'll just say that the stories of pursuit are far more interesting that those of spoils, but I believe that might be a given.
Perry Mason (2020)
Dark AF
I was expecting the classic Perry Mason, and I was taken for a ride.
And what a ride that was!
This is not your father's or grandfather's Perry Mason, that's for sure.
The filmography is top notch and the story arc is fart from "villain of the week". If anything, this is an ultra modernized take on times gone by, that gets extra credit from me for using my expectations as someone familiar with with the canon as a tool against me.
The ten starts are well deserved. I hold my breath between and during episodes.
Stalker (1979)
Slow, deep and hard
This is a visually rich love letter to cinema and humanity.
It definitely requires the right mood and setting, but it is a gift that keeps on giving once you start to feel and moove to the slow, brooding pulse that is the pace of this creation. This is not quite sci-fi, not quite post apocalyptic, not quite psychological thriller, not quite suspense, but an amaglam of all of these and more.
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
A visual genius revisit a literary visionary
No one and nothing can prep you for this viewing.
It's definitely not suitable for all audiences, but give it a try, as it's a cinematic must and a troubling work of art that serves as as both a commentary and a warning.
Taxi Driver (1976)
A memorizing dive into toxicity
Crime, grime, mental instability, a festering city and the humans that use is as their feeding ground.
Taxi Driver is a time capsule of a period, of a state of mind, of a dark underbelly that everyone would rather keep hidden.
Like most of Scorsese's works it is a finely painted masterpiece that keeps unfolding even after numerous viewings.
Solyaris (1972)
A unique piece of art
While other Tarkovsky films might be a bit taxing, here you will find a sci-fi gem, dealing with the human soul in a most poetic manner.
Visually stunning, it is hard to believe this is the product of early 1970s Soviet Union.
Whether you are a fan of the Hollywood adaptation, or the novel - prepare to be amazed.
Dark City (1998)
The test of time
I have not re-watched this film since it's release, and I'm pleased say that it is even better than I recalled.
It's unique, and a must watch for fans of the genre.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Naysayers say nay
This is not your grandpa's Star Trek.
Times have changed, and do did production values, storytelling, audiences and the world and n general.
No Trek was perfect from day one, nor did any Trek installment received positive reviews at first.
TNG was not TOS, DS9 was not TNG, and I hope I don't need to remind you the horrid reaction to Discovery.
For what it's worth, Picard does a great job on following up on what's left of the TNG universe, allows closure and takes us on a new adventure with new and familiar faces.
I'm holding my breath till season two.
HaSheker HaGadol (2012)
An improved take on the genre
If you are aware of the previous work by the creators of this movie - you probably have a better understanding of the genre and an understanding of the context.
This installment has better production values, improved continuity, a better grasp of cinematography, quality storytelling and even some martial arts and visual effects thrown in.
The Dreamers' Field (2017)
On the importance of following one's dreams
The Dreamers' Field is a rockumentary that successfully captures a local, international and mostly universal story.
It's the antithesis of Spinal Tap in a way, as what's dialed up to 11 here is the reality.
Without giving away too much - it is highly relatable if at any point of your life you wanted to pursue a goal, to run away from the mundane, to chase success and to achieve anything really.
It is even more relatable if you are or were an artist, specifically a musician.
Well worth a watch.
Heat (1995)
15/10
There's a reason for all the raving reviews, and that reason is the quality of this movie. It's a treasure.
Deadpool 2 (2018)
Loved it (all versions!)
Deadpool might not be everybody's cup of superhero tea, but I love the character, and what Ryan Reynolds did with it.
The second installment is really good IMO, with the Fred Savage version being a fun tweak for the elderly Savage fans out there.
Sure, this is not peak cinematic art, but it's pure fun with a dash of feels and tons of cleverness.
