Captures the spirit of Halloween
11 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Michael Dougherty's long delayed movie 'Trick r Treat' finally got a release, albeit a straight to DVD one. Personally, I would have loved to have seen this in a theater, but thanks to WB's mishandling of the film, I've had to settle for watching it in my living room. Whatever the reason for them shelving the movie for two years, it certainly isn't diminished when viewed at home. Dougherty's movie still comes across like a work of art, and a lovingly crafted homage to his favorite holiday.

Every frame of the movie literally oozes Halloween atmosphere, and is gorgeous to watch. The production design is top notch. The direction is excellent as well. He manages to evoke both chills and laughter, sometimes both at the same time. Not an easy task. He also manages to breathe new life into the anthology format by making all the stories intertwine with one another (think Pulp Fiction for example) instead of having each tale be its own separate entity like most films like this tend to do. He probably had to have a flow chart when he was writing this thing to keep up with all the different plot elements.

If Halloween is your thing, then I definitely recommend this movie. It pretty much has it all - Werewolves, zombies, vampires, serial killers, and a few more spooky surprises along the way. It's just the thing to get you in the festive mood on a chilly October evening.

American Idol (2002– )

Dear God, what has become of television?
20 February 2007
Shows like this are the reason that so much of television sucks these days. It is nothing more than an over-hyped, overblown televised karaoke contest and people watch this crap in droves. I've totally lost all faith in humanity for allowing a show like this to go on and on and on.Years ago, a show like this (think 'Star Search' for example) was the exception rather than the norm. Now it's all you can find. Reality programming has completely ruined TV. Granted, there's still some pretty decent scripted shows on the tube (Monk, 30 Rock, My Name is Earl, The Office) but as long as people line up mindlessly to watch muck like 'American Idol', I'm afraid it's only gonna get worse. I weep for the future.

Tales from the Darkside (1983–1988)

The memory cheats!
5 February 2007
As a teenager growing up in the 80's, I thought Tales from the Darkside was one of the scariest things on TV. Hell, even the opening scared me with its creepy music and its even creepier narration. Now, 20 some years later I've finally watched them again, thanks to the Sci-Fi channel, and I must say that it has not aged very well. There are a few gems (Trick or Treat, Halloween Candy, The Circus, The Cutty Black Sow), but for the most part, most of these stories come across as being just plain silly. And the low budget doesn't help matters either. It looks like some people at a local TV station decided to make an anthology series. Overall, it just doesn't pack the wallop that it did 20 years ago, but the opening is still creepy as hell. On the plus side, Darkside is way better than Showtime's crapfest Masters of Horror.

Not what it's cracked up to be
4 October 2006
There have been many naysayers on here who have made some interesting and valid points about this over-hyped, shallow series, and I am in complete agreement with them. The new BSG is a waste of TV airwaves and an insult to the viewer. It is seriously flawed in concept and execution. For example:

1. Cylons now look like supermodels: While the robotic Cylons shown on here from time to time look pretty good and successfully update the old 70's design, the human-looking Cylon idea is just lame. This old 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' plot line of enemies among us has just been done to death. Not to mention it's just lazy.

2. The contemporary look and feel of the show: I really hate the fact that the human Colonials who live halfway across the galaxy and know of Earth only in legend look like they buy their clothes at JC Penney and speak in collegial 21st century English. They drive cars and have diners. The have names like Laura and William and Lee. It makes me feel more like I'm watching 'The West Wing' and ruins all suspension of disbelief.

3. The Angst Factor: Everybody in this show has some kind of major character flaw and/or caries a huge-ass chip on their shoulder. They call it 'character development', but since this seems to be the hot trend in TV shows right now, I just think it's lazy.

People knock the old 1970's version as being cheesy and escapist, but at least the original series knew what it was and didn't try to pass itself off as something it wasn't.

I really hope that this show runs out of gas soon and will be replaced by something that hopefully is much better.
