Jack the Ripper (1988)
Caine at his best
Michael Caine is truly brilliant in this outstanding mini-series. Despite the trappings of being a TV production, it transcends it's limitations and delivers a thrilling take on the infamous unsolved Jack the Ripper case.
Outstanding work from al involved.
The Lobster (2015)
Original and Bold
This is remarkable filmmaking. I love a film that is so fresh and daring, and this ticks all of those boxes. It is funny, disturbing and profound in equal measure.
Sunset Blvd. (1950)
A masterpiece.
A masterpiece is the only word I could use to describe one of my favourite films of all time.
Some Like It Hot (1959)
Glorious
Still as gloriously funny and zany as the first time I saw it. That ending never gets old. Won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it. Marilyn, Tony and Jack working with the great Billy Wilder - what more could you ask for?!
The Apartment (1960)
Simply Perfect
I adore everything about this movie. Every aspect of it is just so brilliantly brought to life on screen. Wilder is a genius - It's a tough call, but this might be my favourite of all of his films.
The Nightingale (2018)
Shocking and difficult to watch
Had to keep stopping this because of the extreme violence. A very powerful film, masterfully directed and acted, but it's a one-time viewing. Not surprised many people couldn't sit through the screening. It's a very tough watch.
The Game (1997)
Entertaining
I really loved this movie when I first saw it, but there are some elements that hold it back from being truly great. Nonetheless, it's a fun little maze to get lost in for a couple of hours.
Mystic River (2003)
A dynamite cast.
This is a disturbing and haunting study of trauma, grief and crime. Sean Penn had an extraordinary few years around this period (between this and 'Milk', he delivered the finest performances of his career). He is supported by an amazing cast who all bring their A game.
Powerful stuff.
Kairos (2019)
A bold and daring work
This beautiful little film gave me a glimpse into a world and community I'm not familiar with. It is heartbreaking, funny and deeply profound. I am glad this film exists.
