Every Day (2018)
Great, but doesn't capture the same magic of the book
(some book spoilers included)
So I recently read the Every Day book and was absolutely blown away by it, really unique and great plot and characters and was excited to watch the movie adaptation of it. I did quite enjoy watching this and it had a lot of the elements from the book, although unfortunately i couldn't help but feeling a bit disappointed with the things it changed or didn't include.
Probably the biggest thing is it almost completely left out the plot in the book where Nathan is trying to figure out what happened to him and get in contact with A, eventually they meet up and A goes off to figure out if it's possible to stay in a body longer and if rheees others like them. Reverand Poole wasn't included at all here, I really found that to be an interesting and very important part of the story and it sucks that it was cut.
The other thing I didn't like much is making it where A can just stay in the body if they fight the original persons soul coming back? Like I guess the result in the end is mostly the same since A rightly realizes that they can't take over other people's lives, it's just not fair to them to do that. But I feel like that was a big part of the book, a mystery especially at the end when it seems that it might be possible to stay in the bodies for longer, which A learns from Reverand Poole like I said earlier. It just felt unnecessary and they could've just kept it the same for the girl who planned to kill herself and didn't have to do the next day thing with the dad being gone, Idk it's not a super big deal but it's a bit weird and disappointing. I guess it does make sense A stayed with Alexendar the longest since he's the most compatible with Rhiannon and has a similar personality to A. I haven't read the sequel to Every Day (3rd book) yet but I guess I can see why they didn't make another movie following this, they kind of left it open ended.
Overall it was still a great movie and it did have quite a lot form the book although the book jjst did it better, I think it helps to have more time in the book to get to know each person, especially through A's thoughts and accessing the person's memories. So while i'm a little disappointed I did still enjoy it and it was cool to see most of what I read on screen, even if a few of the characters look different than I imagined. The book was just so magical feeling and so descriptive like the beach scene felt way more magical and in-the-moment than in the film. But you can't just translate a book 1-for-1 into a movie, things have to be cut and changed to make it work in a different format.
So yeah overall I'd say it's better than the average review scores for this movie but not quite at the level of amazing that the book was at.
Minority Report (2002)
Great movie
What the hell. That was crazy. I really enjoyed watching this film, really interesting and unique plot, I loved the dystopian setting and all the future technology. The concept of the movie is so interesting, basically predicting the future to capture people who intend to commit a crime before they actually commit it. This causes there to be no crime anymore but the ethics are definitely questionable, what if the person changed their mind or didn't actually go through with their crime intentions? John, the main character gets accused because the people who can see the future get a vision of John killing someone and the whole investigation is just crazy with John escaping and changing his eyes so the scanners wouldn't recognize him, and trying to clear his innocence by finding the man he was supposed to kill, but it turns out that this man which was previously unknown to him was claimed to have kidnapped (and killed?) John's son who went missing years ago, and a big part of what made John support the pre-crime system so much. Although it's ironic because it gets turned against him. He takes Agatha with him to try and find Leo, then discovers pictures of his son which causes him to almost kill Leo, but Agatha tells him he can make a choice. He decides not to shoot him but then ends up doing it anyway a minute later. I think that John's father started pre-crime originally and he killed Agatha's mother but by hiring someone else to make it look like it wasn't him (something like that). Then John's father is predicted to kill him and this would mean John's father gets arrested but it would mean the pre-crime system still works. John tells him he can make a choice, and he does. He doesn't kill John but instead kills himself. That was just really unexpected and a crazy plot twist and it causes the pre-crime system to collapse and all the people released, the prisoners who didn't actually commit crimes yet, and the people who could predict the future didn't have to do that anymore.
Anyway, the plot is pretty complicated and even a bit confusing but it's very intriguing and the dystopian world and characters are very interesting. Pretty great movie. Score: 8.5/10.
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013)
Could've almost been better than the first movie, instead was worse
Sigh..... I really thought this might be better than the original, nah. This has a lot of the same problems, at least they did fix some problems like they gave Luke the scar and Annabeth blonde hair, but the actual characters still didn't match super well to the originals in the books, regardless of looks. The characters in the reboot show match way better. I really don't like Annabeth in these movies to be honest, she just seems kinda fake and not very complex like in the books.
In the first half I thought, okay this isn't too bad, it was mostly accurate to the original plot although with the events happening in different ways and in a different order it mostly made sense. Then the second half... wtf happened? So many things make no sense, why in the world is Polyphemus within a theme park??? The plummet of doom?? Seriously huh???? And then the golden fleece looks more like a rug than actual fleece from sheep, speaking of there's literally no sheep at all when those played a big role in the book. Also I hated how Luke somehow revived Kronos but then Percy just attacked him and he magically went away again?? What?? Luke tried to get the fleece in the original from Percy but Percy gave it to Clarisse to bring back separately and he didn't get anywhere close to reviving Kronos yet. That whole part was just so confusing and unnecessary, Luke getting eaten by Kronos for some reason and then Annabeth completely dies not from Polyphemus but some random monster instead? But then the Golden Fleece brings her back to life which yeah it does in the original but she's just badly damaged and unconscious, not dead. I will say getting to watch Thalia revive from the tree was pretty cool, she might be the most accurate character to the books in these movies. Oh, also Dionysus is quite good and funny in this movie (even tho he didn't appear at all in the first movie???) although I still definitely prefer Mr. D played by Jason Mantzoukas who is just hilarious.
Overall I very much see why they didn't make any more movies after this, it would've been kind of cool but it really wasn't possible to save the series with how far they veered off course in the first (and only) two movies. It seems they listened to some feedback people had after the first movie like the characters but then somehow ignored the main reason people didn't like the first one, because it was a bad adaptation. This one was the same but worse and as an actual movie I'd say it was pretty good at best but again as an adaptation this just sucked. I'm very glad that we have the reboot series and don't have to suffer through many more movies like this. Just the fact they aged most everyone up by 4 years ruined this from the start.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)
Pretty good standalone movie, terrible book adaptation
So, this is a really tough movie for me to rate. I absolutely love the Percy Jackson book series and have been really loving the new reboot series (which is super great), but I had never seen the original movies (well only 2 movies since they didn't make any more after the second one). I've heard for quite a while that it's really bad, but I wanna say first it was a lot better than I expected. One one hand this is a really bad adaptation of the book, while the first half mostly sticks to the original story, most of the second half is very loosely based on events from the book. On the other hand, if you think of this as a stand-alone movie, this is actually quite fun and entertaining to watch.
First of all I'll go over the things I didn't like about the movie, so as I said before this is really bad as an adaptation of the book. In the first half of the movie it wasn't too bad although there were a lot of little details that were different that bugged me. I mean first of all why are Percy, Grover and Annabeth all like 17-18?? That just makes no sense considering he is 12 in the book and also the fact that there's a major prophecy in the books for something to happen when he turns 16. I also didn't like how Percy figured out he was Poseidon's son so fast, I mean they just completely ignored the fact that campers have to be claimed by their god parents in order to be assigned to a certain cabin, somehow everyone just already knew I guess?? There were just so many moments in the film where i was just like "huh??? This makes no sense!". Like why in the world is Luke a gamer? He straight-up just has a whole gaming setup in his cabin, which shouldn't be possible considering Hermes' cabin is supposed to be really full and crowded. Also aren't half-bloods not supposed to have technology on them because it attracts monsters? I mean Percy just has an iPod Touch with him which he uses to defeat Medusa, that was kind of cool I guess but he shouldn't even have that. Also the whole quest for the pearls really bugged me, just a really unnecessary addition to the plot that contradicts the book. In the book Percy received the 3 pearls as a gift from his father, given to him by a Naiad after he falls out of the big arch and into the water. (Oh yeah, that scene wasn't even in here at all). In the book they don't seek out these places specifically (Aunty Em's Garden Gnome Emporium, the museum and the Lotus Casino), they just end up at these places from desperation from unexpected events throughout their quest.
It just feels rushed and everything moves way too fast, they hardly spend any time in the camp and I'm really glad we have a great reboot show now because movies just doesn't work for this series, there's so many details and so far the new series is great in its pacing and adapting the book very well.
Now for what I did like about this movie. So like I said before as a standalone movie this is pretty good, the Medusa scene was pretty cool and the Las Vegas scene was great, even though it was kind of silly it was a fun part to watch, and I loved their escape from the casino, attacking the people and stealing the car to get out of there (that car would be locked and not have keys in real life tho). Also the Hydra scene in the museum was really good although had no connection at all to the book. The second half really strayed a lot from the book but it was quite entertaining in its own way, for some reason the whole plot with Ares in the book is completely ignored and Luke just directly frames Percy with the lightning bolt. Then they have a crazy fight on the Empire State building over the lightning bolt, Luke trying to prevent Percy from returning it in time so the gods fight and so he can bring down Olympus. This scene was pretty epic to be honest and crazy, interesting how Percy had the flying shoes instead of Grover and was able to fly around and fight Luke and then when he got a ton of water to attack Luke that was really cool. Finally he got the bolt back and had a bonding moment with his father which was nice.
It's just super weird how they took the scene from the end of the book, where Luke attacks Percy in the woods after his adventure and kind of morphed it into the part where Percy goes to return the bolt to make it a lot more dramatic and intense than it originally was. This is somewhat cool and I'm sure they did this because it's a major motion picture and they felt like they had to have some epic fight scenes to capture viewer's attentions it really isn't at all accurate to the book.
So in conclusion, this is overall a pretty good movie for what it is but I am so glad we have a new great series now that is staying way more true to the books. I almost want to give this a 7/10 because it was very entertaining at times but just for the fact it really fails at being an accurate adaption I just can't do that. If you're a big Percy Jackson fan I would still recommend watching this, especially if you're waiting for new episodes of the show to release. But really if you want the true great Percy Jackson story then go read or re-read the great books.
Wonka (2023)
Great movie!
Really great fun and joyous movie! The music was great, the casting was really great, the effects were great, pretty much all elements of this movie were great. The plot was very interesting and it was also quite sweet as well (pun intended). Loved the characters, both the villains and the heroes were great in their own ways. I loved seeing the rival chocolate companies that were in the original, those three people were both funny and evil and charming at the same time. Timotheé Chalomet also was an excellent choice for Willy Wonka, while I don't think anyone can beat Gene Wilder from the original he did a very good job and really makes him whimsical and magical, as he should be. Just a really cool and sweet and fun origin story for the great magical man Willy Wonka.
The Purge (2013)
Intense and Great Movie
This is yet another horror movie that has mixed reviews that I don't understand how people hate. I saw people calling this boring.... how?? Sure it wasn't constantly full of action but I think it was very tense at times and those people breaking in to the house were very creepy. Also the moral dilemmas and decisions made by the characters through ought the movie were quite interesting.
The boy Charlie let in the "Bloody Stranger" (that's what the man is listed as on IMDb) because he was an innocent homeless guy who just wanted to survive the night and was being hunted down by a bunch of psychopaths who felt entitled to killing people they deemed lower status. I can't believe that people call Charlie dumb for letting him in! Clearly he has compassion and he saw a man in distress with no one around to help and wanted to do the right thing.
As I was watching I was thinking how it really was an awful situation, the family should have made the stranger go back out to save their family and prevent the group from breaking in, but at the same time the right thing to do was protect him and fight back against the group as they broke in. It was interesting how James and Mary (the parents) basically switched mindsets and they all eventually agreed to protect the stranger. James at first was only thinking about his family and was doing everything possible to get him back outside but eventually they all realized what they were doing is horrible. I just wanna say those people outside are truly awful, I know it's the purge and murder is legal and all that but these people are so set at purging people they deem lower class and basically calling his life worthless is just awful.
The movie was pretty nerve-wracking (is that the right word? Idk lol) throughout and the kills were pretty good and James ended up sadly dying, he really fought against the people breaking in greatly though. It was also crazy how they seemingly got saved by their neighbors but it turned out they just wanted to kill the family themselves but luckily the stranger they saved from before came back to save them (I literally gasped when that happened, great moment!).
Anyways yeah I really enjoyed this and I think it was great, I'm interested to see what the other movies will be like. I actually watched a few episodes of the show a few years ago and found that interesting but never finished it which I should do sometime. It's a really interesting thought experiment and something like this could (somewhat) realistically happened and it just shows how even your closest friends and neighbors could turn at you in a moments notice if not held back by the law.
Last thing, I think so many people watching films like these need to stop overthinking about the characters and writing, for some reason a lot of the time I really enjoy movies with mixed to bad ratings, I just watch movies to enjoy them and have fun and horror movies for the suspense and intensity and awesome moments, I don't think it's necessary to call all the characters stupid and overanalyze things. I mean I really don't care about review scores at all anyway because they don't matter, I just enjoy what I enjoy and I don't care. Movies like this are just fun to watch and that can be part of what makes them great.
The Banana Splits Movie (2019)
Surprisingly Amazing and Intense
Ok I wanna start off by saying, how on earth does this have such mixed reviews? Like I don't see how you could hate this at all if you like horror movies (well if you hate gore then I would understand). I had this added on my watchlist for a while since I heard it was slightly similar to FNAF, but for some reason I didn't process until early on in the film that the Banana Splits animals were actually animatronic robots and not just crazy people in costumes. I honestly think this was one of the most intense horror movies I've ever seen, after the introduction and the main show (once the bad things really started happening) I swear I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and there were so many moments that just made me gasp. I was not at all expecting the deaths to be so brutal and gruesome and as gross as it was, but it was still kind of awesome in a way.
Sure this isn't exactly a cinematic masterpiece, but I feel like people always judge movies like these the wrong way. They aren't supposed to be deep movies with in-depth thoughtful messages, really it's just an entertaining and "fun" movie to watch. I put fun in quotes because its more stressed out than fun (at least for me) but I mean that in a good way. I haven't watched a ton of horror movies so maybe there's more intense stuff out there but the suspense was terrifying and as I said earlier the kills were just insane.
Sure, you could say that the story or the writing weren't all that great, although I think the story was very interesting, it took me a while to realize why they were killing and that this was a response programmed by their creator when they got cancelled. That guy who made the robots is definitely crazy but tbh the network should have just not cancelled the show and then none of this would have happened. But then again we wouldn't have this movie either. It's also interesting how they kill nearly every adult they see gruesomely, but I guess since its a kids show they don't harm the kids at all.
Now just some random things I wanna talk about that I found interesting. I liked how they made everyone give up their smart phones at the beginning, because I feel like smart phones can make things too easy and basically ruin movies, like a lot of old movies could have been much different if people were able to easily text and call each other. Plus this made it more intense when later all the phones were smashed and no one was able to call 911. Also Snorky being a good animatronic was unexpected but absolutely awesome and that fight sequence towards the end was insane. They would have all died if Snorky didn't help them out and it's cool to see not all of them being evil. It must've been the compassion from Harley that somehow altered the programming of Snorky, I'm not really sure how but that was really cool regardless.
And again I just wanna mention how intense the kills were, if you can't stand gore do not watch this (well you would've watched it already if you're reading this). When they showed all the adults who were going to leave after the show all dead I was in shock, I had thought at least they would be able to get away before the killing started but no. And the end part was so intense where the Banana Splits were putting on a show with the dead body of Stevie who got a lollipop shoved in his mouth who they then burnt his corpse, and horrifyingly tearing apart the limbs of Andy. Then at the very end the scene where they were rescuing all the kids and several of them nearly dying but escaping was just intense and insane. And finally Mitch being punched, left behind by the paramedics (definitely not realistic but whatever), and than grusomely ran over was insane. Yeah he shouldn't have cheated but it seemed like he was going to redeem himself as he figured out what really mattered in life was not the person he was cheating with but instead his original wife. Oh well.
So yeah I had a lot to say, this movie was just insane and I was not at all expecting to like it this much. I don't really get the hate, this was just amazing honestly. I can't see myself rewatching it again for quite a while because of how intense it was but that also made me love it.
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
First part wasn't as good, second half was really good
The first part of the film wasn't as good as i expected but it was still what you can expect from a friday the 13th movie tho. I will just say there was a little (more like a lot) too much nudity and people being horny in this, i don't really care all that much but i swear why was nearly every person so horny in this, even the kid was when he watched the neighbored unread through the window! Anyways that aside, the second half and later parts of the film were really good and that kid at the end was just awesome. Still a really good movie. Also Jimmy was really funny, when I first saw him I was like "wait, is that george mcfly?", and yeah it is the same actor and i like how he has the same nervous energy as in back to the future.
Friday the 13th Part III (1982)
Very Entertaining and Suspensful!
This was a lot better than I initially expected! While yes, it may not do anything too new (besides not taking place at a summer camp which is nice) and the formula is kind of predictable, there's always a stupid group of teens that for some reason split up and they all get killed off one by one by Jason, but damn this was entertaining. I was on the edge of my seat nearly the entire time, it was so suspenseful and intense and while it wasn't super scary the scariest part was the tension and the dramatic irony, just screaming at the characters to not do what they do because Jason is about to kill them. The last part of the movie with Chris running away from Jason was so intense and awesome, I was cheering for her the whole time and I'm so glad she made it out alive and "defeated" Jason. I have no clue how he is so powerful and after all the knife stabbing and axe bashings he's token he's still somehow alive and fine. Well he looked pretty dead at the end but obviously they've made many more movies after this. Technically any characters can be immortal if it makes the company enough money to make more movies with them.
There were also so many moments where my mouth was just wide open in absolute shock, the deaths were crazy and sure they look a bit cheesy now as this was in the early 80s, but there were some really brutal and unique and intense deaths throughout this movie.
The cast was pretty good too and their relationships and drama was interesting to watch, along with the biker gang although they got killed off early (besides that one guy who somehow stayed alive in the barn and helped out Chris but still died). Shelly was pretty funny too, it was pretty ironic that he faked his death several times and then when he's actually bleeding out he's not taken seriously at first.
Another thing I want to mention is the music. I feel like Friday the 13th films always have a great soundtrack. The score really helps add to the intensity and the tension of the movie and I love how the strings sound like the slicing of a machete, and the iconic "ki ki ki ma ma ma" whisper sound in the score is quite creepy.
Yeah so that's all I have to say, it was honestly a great movie for how entertaining and suspenseful it was, although it still stuck closely to the Friday the 13th formula.
Willy's Wonderland (2021)
Cheesy but very Entertaining
Is this cheesy? Absolutely. Is it cringe? Sometimes, yeah. But is it fun? It's just super entertaining and fun to watch, the best parts have gotta be the Nicholas Cage vs. The animatronics fight scenes. The teenagers are really dumb like splitting up in a horror movie is the worst thing you could do!! The human characters aren't all that great or developed, the sheriff is just an idiot I get you don't want to piss off Willy but trying to stop the janitor was a horrible idea, but even then he still managed to break through his handcuffs and defeat the animatronics. Also, "he's not trapped in here with the animatronics, they're trapped in here with him!" is such a great line.
I also feel kinda bad for Tex Macadoo and that other guy at the end, they thought they were free but then they get blown up before they could escape. Liv and the Janitor are pretty much the only great characters in this but it's still overall quite enjoyable.
I will say tho where this movie really shines is the character design for the animatronics, they're really fun creative designs for different animals and it totally feels like you would see these in a real Chuck E. Cheese style restaurant. The music also is really great, the jingles that Willy signs are really catchy and fit well and the original score and music is also really good.
While yeah this is basically just a ripoff of Five Nights at Freddy's, it's still definitely worth watching even with the FNAF movie releasing soon. I'm 100% sure the FNAF movie will be far superior but this is still a really fun and entertaining mascot horror movie and if you like FNAF i'd recommend watching this for sure.
Ballon (2018)
Really good and dramatic movie!
Wow! This was very good and so intense it had me on the edge of my seat most of the time! I had read the book version of this in my German class before and we just watched this movie also in my German class and it was way more dark and dramatic feeling than the book. Even though I knew roughly what would happen it was still so interesting to see the different characters and their struggles to craft a hot air balloon and escape while being hunted by the Stasi and seen as suspicious by many people for buying so much fabric. The music also was very good and really made all the scenes feel so much more dramatic, it really helped elevate it to really get your heart racing at times. Great movie!
Free Guy (2021)
Great movie!
I just watched this and that was such a great and entertaining movie. The action was really cool and well done and it was also really funny. I highly recommend anyone to watch this.
Die Hard 2 (1990)
Almost as good as the first one
Oh man. This movie is so good, it's almost as good as the first movie. It is so intense and the action where they all shooting is crazy and where McClane goes out to try to save the plane and it lights up on fire and explodes is so crazy. Such an amazing movie and super intense. I don't know what else to say
Edit: (after I finished the movie): Also when that guy is radioing the people about the situation and causing everyone to panic was crazy and also the plot twist where all those guys where actually on Sander's team and they're in the plane trying to take off and John is on the plane trying to get it to stop and then he gets kicked off the plane but he opens up the gas tank to make the gas come out in a trail and lights it on fire so it explodes and everyone can use the fire trail to land the planes.
This was my second time watching, but it's been a while, and oh man was it so intense and so amazing
