X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
Decent enough, so why the low rating??
For what its worth, its a good, entertaining movie and a good follow-on film in the X-Men Origin franchise. But I don't get the low ratings that people have given the movie?
Maybe I enjoyed the film as I have really enjoyed the X-Men origin films (Yes, even Apocalypse, which wasn't all bad).
If you liked the previous origin films, then its worth a watch.
8/10
Neerja (2016)
My Review of Neerja (Spoiler-free, I promise)
I went to watch the film on the 20th February. Two days later (as I write this review), the film is still on my mind. This movie has left a haunting impact on me, which very few movies have ever achieved.
Having seen the trailer only a few days ago, this was a movie that I felt that I needed to watch. As per the description, the movie is based on the life of the courageous Flight-Attendant Neerja Bhanot, who sacrificed her life while protecting the lives of 359 passengers on the Pan Am flight 73 in 1986 from Bombay to New York. The flight was hijacked by a group representing a Terrorist organisation.
Without giving too much away, this is a must-watch movie. This is one biopic that has been produced and filmed perfectly. Impactful, realistic and full of tension, this will leave you gripped throughout. This is not your average Bollywood masala movie, far from it. Its gritty and disturbing.
At 2hrs long, the film is perfectly paced and doesn't feel rushed at all.
For me, this is Sonam Kapoor's true breakout movie. A career-best performance by her so far, this will get the attention of her critics. I truly hope that this performance will lead to bigger and better roles for her. It's about time too.
Special mentions must also go to Shabana Azmi with yet another superb performance as the mother of Neerja Bhanot. And to Jim Sarbh, who plays Khalil. This guy plays a menacing, repulsive character, that will live long in the memory. You will hate this guy, I promise.
The movie will make you cry, yet be proud of someone that was truly brave, courageous and heroic. Director Ram Madhvani, take a bow. Truly excellent work.
My Rating? 9* out of 10.
Commando (2013)
Hail to the new action king Vidyut Jamwal! Its pure action throughout, the way its meant to be!
WOW!
This film was completely out of left-field. With the recent dross of commercial flicks that Bollywood has brought, here was something I didn't expect; a mindless Bollywood action film which was so damn entertaining from start to finish. Yes, I am an action junkie and worship Hollywood films like Commando, First Blood Trilogy and The Expendables. But seeing Bollywood try their equivalent of the aforementioned movies is something I have longed for. Never did I think that Bollywood would EVER bring out a movie on the same action level like Ong Bak or even the original Police Story (real stunts, no wires etc).
Well.....We do now!
And we have a new full-on action hero in Vidyut Jamwal. I mean, he was impressive as the villain in Force. But here, he shows that he can be Bollywood's answer to Tony Jaa and Stallone, all rolled into one. Tough, rugged-looking, yet silent and the occasional smart one-liners (a great homage to the 80s action heroes of Hollywood). Some of the stunts he does in the film are breathtaking. Even more impressive when you realise that no body-doubles are used for the main hero (hence the disclaimer at the start of the film).
The antagonist AK47 (Jaideep Ahlawat) screen presence is menacing. I felt that he could have been more terrifying, but in the end, he gets the job done. A good counter to Karanvir (as played by Vidyut). Newcomer Pooja Chopra does a good job too.
Okay, so the plot is predictable, and some parts of the editing could have been sharper. But for action fans, the entertainment value is sky- high. Its an out-and-out action film; it does what it says on the tin. And I really look forward to the eventual sequel. Really, I want more of the same.
Its a must-see for Bollywood action fans!!!
Hip Hip Hurray (1984)
The best football movie made in India.
Having seen this film a few years ago, its very unusual for a country that is well known as being a fanatical cricket and hockey-loving country, to come up with a film based on football. And what a surprise it is. Considering that the film was made roughly around the time India won the cricket world cup, it surprises me that anyone would contemplate making a football movie in a cricket/ Hockey-mad country during that time. The director of the movie, Gulzar, has done just that.
Quite simply, this is the best football film India has produced. It is interesting story about an IT graduate working as a sports/ football coach in an all boys school. He coaches the school football team to play against another rival school football team. I wont reveal too much about the plot but please, if you find this movie do check it out, its done very brilliantly. The football matches are filmed quite well (amazingly, this is filmed without stealing highlights from Match of The Day or from some other sports shows, lol). The simulated matches are filmed very well, with a real Roy of The Rovers-style climax. The film has a slight coming-of-age feel to it. While the football is the main focus of the film, it also highlights different facets of human emotions and teenage angst.
Although the casting is well selected, the performance of the film must go to the late, great Shafi Inamdar as the rival coach/ referee. His performance as a hard-nosed, win-at-all-costs football coach, is very reminiscent of a good Premier league manager.
Put simply, its a real winner. Rent it, Buy it and enjoy it. You will not go wrong with it.
