Fantastic mystery from start to finish
12 November 2023
If you're looking for an excellent mystery binge watch, I highly recommend this series. The mystery starts right away and builds to the end.

Morven Christie is always likeable, even more so in this role. Her life is flipped upside down and she's left trying to make sense of the who and why. She is thrown into a world she knew nothing about and used her resilience and determination to power through.

Peter Mullan is fantastic as a powerful, dangerous man. I'm used to seeing Julie Graham play strong yet sensitive characters and she does a great job as a crime lord's wife.

I'd never seen Prassana Puwanarajah before and was captivated by how well he portrayed a DC who was a mix of empathetic and intense. I'll be watching for him in other roles!

Inside No. 9: The Last Weekend (2023)
Season 8, Episode 6

A classic Inside No. 9 episode!
7 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Throughout the series there have been some fantastic episodes sprinkled in, and this is one of them.

It starts one way and slowly warps into something completely unexpected and different.

It's refreshing to see a change in the strong vs. Weak character in this episode and the acting is brilliant as usual.

I did keep expecting them to argue about "chocolate's made" vs. "chocolate cake" but pushed that out of my mind when the twist began.

It's "fudge is made" by the way; I had to put it on pause and check to make sure I hadn't been saying it incorrectly since grade school!

I hope they do more episodes like this in the future. It truly is classic Inside No. 9.

The dark side of the 50's and Alt J
8 August 2023
Watching this over 30 years after the release of this film, it's still a fantastic portrayal of difficult topics. What still stands out is Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance. Before this she was nearly always sweet, shy characters in films. The jump from that to Tralala really shows her talent and commitment to the characters she plays.

Alexis Arquette was fantastic and so was Stephen Lang. Rikki Lake was also in it and so was Jerry Orbach plus watch for a young Sam Rockwell!

One thing for sure, I'll never hear Fitzpleasure by Alt J the same way ever again after watching it this time.

If you are looking for a dark, intense movie, this might be good. If you're looking for a happy ending, you'll need to find something else.

Fun puzzle of a mystery!
12 September 2022
I really enjoyed this mini-series and have a new appreciation of Will Poulter's acting skills. I am used to him playing a goofball, but he was brilliant as a serious main character.

Lucy Boynton was great as the female lead. She was very convincing as 1930's feisty, independent and brave Lady Derwent.

Miles Jupp's character was a very difficult man, and that was fun to see the contrast between that and his usual light-hearted, funny personality. I kept expecting him to say something funny, but he was believable as a serious character.

The miniseries has many twists and turns, and I didn't solve the mystery until the end. It was a fun binge watch!

I hope Hugh Laurie creates another Agatha Christie mini-series - he did a great job with this one!

"With friends like these, who needs enemies?"
23 July 2022
That could have been the tag line for the film.

I really wanted to like this movie - it started light and darkly funny but quickly became an hour and a half watching people be cruel to the main character.

We see enough cruelty and bullying on social media, I was not expecting to also see it in this film.

The acting was very good, though. Each actor (apart from the primary) did a fantastic job being completely unlikeable.

I love Russell Tovey but he couldn't even save this
1 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like this and tried hard to but couldn't get past a few things: Russell's character Nathan and Holly's parents were the only likeable characters. Bob's voice and creep factor were overwhelmingly irritating, and Holly was really cold and unpleasant.

Her best friend didn't act like a police officer and she was awkward to watch.

The story bounced around so often it was disorienting. Nathan looked the same in the past and currently so it was confusing. The only obvious difference was Bob's hair was greasier in the present.

I was disappointed in everything but Russell's acting. It just wasn't enough to make the series likeable.

I love Judy Greer and wanted to like this...
12 February 2022
Judy Greer is amazing in everything she is in so I was excited to see this. It started out great and funny, but then got more serious. At the end I was left feeling sad. It packed a lot of feelings into a very short film.

Quite meh with wonky accents.
21 January 2022
What I noticed more than anything (apart from the bizarre accents that came and went) was how Jenna Coleman looks like she is about to start laughing in nearly every scene she is in, despite the serious subject matter. She holds her mouth in a half smile even when awful things are happening. It's really odd.

The one character with a really good accent was Alice Englert who played an American. The rest sound like they were guessing how their accent was supposed to sound without ever hearing it before.

This could have been so much better.

Excellent acting despite an allergy to Ike
6 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Will Farrell is wonderful as kind, endearing Marty and Paul Rudd is completely believable as Ike. This is the first character played by Paul Rudd that I have loathed, because Ike is so different than Paul really is! Kathryn Hahn was perfect as Phyllis.

After watching this, I immediately needed to watch Ant-Man to shake the Ike out of my system and bring some loveable Paul Rudd back into my brain.

Spoiler: This was like watching control and manipulation in a domestic violence relationship. It was painful and heartbreaking watching someone so nice be completely taken control of by someone in a position of trust.

Marty had a target of vulnerability on his back that Ike honed in on and it was game on once he got his tentacles hooked into him. Ike alienated Marty from his friends and loved ones, stole from him and spun it back as though it was all for Marty's benefit. It was especially sad because this is based on a true story.

This is an excellent mini-series!
3 March 2021
Jenna Coleman was outstanding and the part she played would not been nearly as good with anyone else. This series had twists and turns and it pulled us right in. Just when it seems like I thought I had it figured out, there was another small twist that shed light on what had already happened. Excellent from beginning to end. Great to binge watch!

Had so much promise...until the end
27 February 2021
This movie started off great--the acting was excellent, and the characters draw you in quickly. The actors were excellent and each episode got more interesting as it went along. I was completely engrossed until the last episode: It felt like the screenwriter had stepped away from the computer after just beginning the last page and their son, home from college and high on acid, typed in the ending. The ending was quite incongruent with the rest of the series and it was disappointing.

If 2020 was a movie...
7 December 2020
The trailer made the film look quirky and funny, yet there was nothing quirky or funny at all in the entire movie. I kept waiting for it to make sense but it only got more convoluted as time went on. And on. And on. It felt like the writer had set the unwritten story down and someone on Ketamine picked it up, added some lines and finished the story. Looks like I picked the wrong night to stop sniffing glue when I watched it.

Fascinating, haunting and really well done
2 September 2019
I saw this series when it first aired and it has impacted me still, four years later.

I have never seen so much story packed tightly into 3 episodes before. There are layers upon layers showing the many different lives people live and how the characters interact alone and in a group.

This series has a very powerful "before you judge others, consider what they are going through" message without slapping you in the face with it. I even felt shame for making an early assumption about one chatacter that I inevitably adored and admired greatly.

You know those "How are you feeling today?" forms with every emotion possible listed? I felt nearly all of them through each episode.

The most impactful scene that brings emotion just thinking about it even four years later was paired perfectly with the song "Choir to the Wild" by Solomon Grey. There has not been a better song matched to a scene in any move I have ever seen. I discovered Solomon Grey through this series and love all of their music.

The acting was outstanding and the scenery was lovely.

It's not a light, happy series at all, but it is a fascinating look at life from many different perspectives and will certainly cause you to look at things differently.

If you are patient it comes together in the end.
2 September 2019
I saw this on Acorn TV and was drawn in by the photo of Adrian Dunbar (from Line of Duty). It was a little bumpy to watch at the beginning and as it got to the last episode things all fell into place. It is not a light, uplifting series at all and toward the last episode it got quite heartbreaking. The acting was excellent, which I knew to expect at least from Adrian Dunbar.

Psychologically it all makes sense in the end and looking back you can see why the decisions that had been made were made, with honest intentions, and without knowing the path things would take.

Darkly fascinating mystery series, with subtitles
2 September 2019
I was pulled in by the photo on the show title page and was surprised at first that the series is in Welsh. I'm in Seattle and have no clue what is being said so was really thankful there is closed captioning in English. The stories unfold in a really creative way, starting with the end result and then jumping back 35 days prior to the event and moving foward to the outcome we see at the beginning. Sounds strange but it works really well and it's fun to seeing the big picture step by step this way. The acting is excellent, the stories are well told and the language is really beautiful. If you don't speak Welsh, don't let the subtitles deter you from watching. It's a fun dark mystery that I hope will continue for many more seasons!

I really wanted to like it...but...
18 August 2018
Stephen Mangan is very talented and funny, and I had hoped this show would utilize his skills. It did not. The subject matter is more awkward and stressful to watch than funny. The director/creator David Cross is also generally funny in an off the wall kind of way but this show seems out of character for him. I like a little heightened tension in TV series but not from the start to the end of each episode.

Fascinating character study
18 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This film touched me more than I expected. The description spoke of it being an "extreme experiment in American living". Although that drew me in, I was much more taken by the people that live on the Mesa. They are a group of people who choose to live away from the stress of American cities, and who respect and look out for each other. They live communally and everyone helps one another. This community accepts people for who they are, and they accept runaway teenagers and other people who are searching for an escape from city life, peace and a place where they can be free. I grew to really appreciate and enjoy the people in this film and was left feeling like they are enjoying something that I will never know: true peace, acceptance and understanding from others.

Good, but I expected more
26 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I was a little disappointed with this film, because it had been so highly rated in here! Although it was set in the 1980's and science wasn't what it is today, there were still some things I was surprised they didn't follow up on...particularly the line from the suspect with the burned face, "He threw me in the fire when I was young." That could have been a great lead for them. I did think some of the film was funny and odd, like our main detective sitting under a tree with an IV hanging from the tree branch above him. It was good, and maybe I am spoiled by American detective type films, but I still give it 5 out of 10 stars.

So silly it's perfect
22 October 2003
This has to be one of the funniest movies ever made. There is so much humor throughout, you have to see it more than once, even more than twice. I can't think of any other movie that I still love, even 23 years later, and can laugh as hard now at it as I did then. I wish they still made movies like this...that were as funny!
