Look Both Ways (2022)
Disappointed
I was looking forward to this. The concept isn't tachked enough in film and it promised good things. However it failed to deliver on all points. The dialogue is clichéd. The main character of Nathalie isn't actually that likeable or well written. The story is bland and boring. Nothing really stands out or grips the viewer. Seems like ( yet again ) it was made for tweens.
I admire the attempt at such a concept but Sliding Doors way back in 1998 did it so ,so , SO much better.
Starred Up (2013)
Brutal masterpiece
The film's utter brutality is only matched by the astonishing performances of the cast, the passion and emotion throughout....culminating in a vicious scene of violence and .....ultimately redemption towards the finale.
A breathtaking example of how real , fiction can be.
A masterpiece of its genre.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
Unnecessary prequel.
Prequels are always a sign of a lack of ideas and lazy writing.
This latest effort is no exception.
Not only is it messy , it's badly acted and the dialogue is corny. It's just a very bad film. The movie offers nothing valuable to the successful franchise. Plus it doesn't have Milla.
Avoid.
The Book of Eli (2010)
Some things are just too silly to believe
All in all not a bad film
Original story , some great scenes and very atmospheric.
However being asked to believe that Washington's character was able to hunt , travel across America unaided AND fight like a ninja whilst being totally blind is simply asking too much. Way too much.
Still recommended if you can forgive the silly and frankly unnecessary twist.
8/10.
Candyman (2021)
Absolute rubbish
An insult to the franchise. It's a complete yawnfest and a total waste of time. Avoid.
Prince of Darkness (1987)
A classic horror film
An absolute classic of the genre.
One of the exceedingly few horror films that is actually unsettling and scary.
The end has stayed with me for years. Ufff. That ending !!!
A masterpiece.
Dark Places, Deadly Illusions (2021)
What was Kristin Davis thinking !
Utter tripe. It's diabolical on every level.
Why does Netflix insist on showing these hideously bad movies ? Avoid at all costs.
The Victorians (2009)
Joyous
This series is a visual and audio joy.
Paxman tells the story of our Victorian ancestors with great knowledge, accuracy , humility, passion, wit , respect and above all ...love.
It's an astonishing documentary.
It's a Sin (2021)
Watch. Learn. Remember. Grow.
For those of us that lived through it , myself included, the series is a bittersweet reminder of the absolute horror and uncertainty of those times, living under the shadow of then untreatable and misunderstood HIV and AIDS but it is also a testament to the sheer joy and life that was lived by those we lost and those we didn't. Watch it. Learn what really happened. Remember those that we lost and those that lost. Grow from it and become a greater person for it. Trust me. You won't regret the insights and compassion it will give you. It's an education in fear , bigotry and cruelty but ultimately the lasting power of life and love.
Blade Runner (1982)
Astonishing
There aren't many films that are truly breathtaking. This is one such film. It's Avant Garde , adventurous , original , shocking , brutal , poetic , stunning , immersive, raw and unforgettable.
As a piece of sci-fi it is a love letter to the very heart of the genre. As a film it's a masterpiece on every level. It is, in every real sense , a life-changing experience.
Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995)
Awkward brilliance
Perfectly captures the absolute hell of early teenage angst and the evils of being unpopular and nerdy. It's a masterpiece.
Breach (2020)
Utter crap
What on earth was Willis thinking ?
This film was absolutely dire on every single level. There is nothing redeeming about this pile of crap. Avoid at all costs.
Female Trouble (1974)
Life changing
You will either hate this , think Meh or realise it's a life changing event. There are no other options. Yes. It's that import to those that feel and think the same. I saw it when I was 21 and it was literally as if Waters had seen inside my comedic soul and placed it on celluloid.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Simply astonishing
In fifty years of watching television, this is some of the best drama I've ever seen. Yes, it's that good. Anya Taylor Joy is mesmerising. The series tells a passionate , sensitive , moving and faultless story.
Passengers (2016)
Igbore the haters
Slick. Fun. Passionate. Believable .Funny. And yes, real sci-fi. Ignore the bad reviews. Yes it's a love story with a sci-fi mix. And THIS is how you do it. I absolutely loved it.
