Coherence (2013)
6/10
Decent, but a bit confusing and with a few flaws that could have easily been fixed.
26 April 2024
It's a good movie. Decent plot, engaging, but you have to overlook a few things to really enjoy it.

First of all, the camera work, OMG, AWFUL, just stay still for at least one second! I was getting dizzy of all the unstable shots, and it's also too dark. I was watching it full HD on my TV, but it felt like I was watching the telesync version on my cellphone.

The plot is good, but it's too far fetched, so you have to overlook a lot of stuff. I mean, they're experiencing a very strange phenomena and they happen to have a book about it? Like cmon... but it's ok I guess, those are minor details.

--MINOR SPOILER SECTION--

What annoyed me the most is that up until the last 5 minutes of the movie Em wasn't that important in the plot, and all of a sudden it felt like the movie was actually about her? That was very confusing, it felt like the movie didn't make up it's mind about who the protagonist was until it was about to end. Also, Em's motives? Like I "understood" them, but are they enough for her to do what she did?

--END OF MINOR SPOILER SECTION--

Anyways, it's not bad, it's a decent enjoyable movie, but I think they could have done a lot more with the plot, thay had a lot of good elements to work with (book, box, glow sticks, houses...), yet the story felt like average, not well thought out and ultimately not good enough.

Decent drama with sci-fi elements. (but it's ultimately a drama)
4 March 2024
This is not a sci-fi movie, but it's a decent drama.

It's like 10% sci-fi and 90% drama.

I mean... it is about an astronaut on a mission to collect some data from an unknown space event around Jupiter, but ultimately it's mostly a about him trying to save his marriage.

By the tagline and the trailer you already know (it's not a spoiler) that a creature appears on the ship, and starts speaking with him, making him rethink his life and his marriage.

Nothing really is explained (maybe in the book?) about the space event taking place, what it REALLY is, why it's there, where it came from and so on. It's just an excuse for the rest of the movie. The explanation of what it is (the beginning) is too abstract. It's more like a space McGuffin, it's only there to move the plot forward.

It's not bad, it's a decent drama if you are looking for it, maybe watch it with your significant other, but it's not really sci-fi.

It doesn't matter what you read (good or bad), you must watch it.
30 December 2023
People complain all the time everything is a marvel sequel, or a disney remake. Well, this is different, bold, new, fresh.

The movie is good and it has rare elements and moments that will haunt you even after watching it. Same as "Terrified", the previous film by the director (there are still scenes I can't erase from my head even after years of watching that one too).

There's a lot of gore, but REALLY graphic, if you're easily impressed, it's probably going to be uncomfortable for you. Some images I'm having a hard time getting them out of my head.

The movie doesn't stop, it's not like those films that have like 30 minutes of boring character development. It starts and it keeps going and you'll get to know the characters as the movie progresses (great tip for filmakers nowadays, full of viewers with short attention span, A. K. A. Tiktok syndrome).

It's a small town story. Solid performances, solid practical effects, decent story.

Spanish speaker or not, if you're a horror fan you must watch this one.

I loved it, but the movie doesn't have an ending.
9 December 2023
This is how the movie is going to be for you:

You'll watch 2 hours and 12 minutes of a movie (an interesting one, sure) but you won't see the ending. I mean, it does end, but they tell you what's gonna happen and then the movie cuts to credits, that's it, you'll have to imagine the rest.

Acting was good, I haven't read the book but the plot is very engaging, it reminded me a bit about Shyamalan's "knock on the cabin" (if you like these kind of movies, go watch that one too). And even if people critizice Shyamalan a lot, at least "knock on the cabin" had an ending (and a decent one in my opinion). This one doesn't, it just lets you "imagine" what's happening next, or even why it's all happening.

Overall, entertaining, but it leaves you unsatisfied.

One of the best live action movies based on a video game?
2 November 2023
I know, I know, the bar for video game movies is REALLY, REALLY low.

First of all, I'm NOT A FAN of FNAF. I think I played the game for like a couple of hours a few years ago.

Now, "one of the best live action video game movies"? Street Fighter? Bob Hopkins' Super Mario? Those were bad. Are Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil and Hitman decent? It's subjective, people will have different opinions.

But no movie is like "wow, this video game movie is amazing, 10/10". So this one stands out as "decent".

It's a PG-13 movie, so there's no gore, little blood, not much violence, but it's entertaining, it's a throwback to old classics, like Chucky, or Nightmare on Elm Street, but PG-13. It's a movie for pre-teens or teens who are just starting to like horror. The story is decent, the movie is entertaining, kids were enjoying it a lot (I went with my 11yo niece and she loved it). It has a plot twist and post credits scene. Only few jumpscares (I thought there were going to be a lot of them) and a few iconic and creepy moments for fans and a lot of references (I missed a few because as I said, I'm not a fan and I'm not familiar with the lore).

7/10.

Black Mirror: Demon 79 (2023)
Season 6, Episode 5
9/10
Not Black Mirror, but I liked Demon 79.
17 June 2023
I don't know why the last two episodes of the season (Mazey Day and Demon 79) are not Black Mirror, they're fantasy episodes, they seem like taken out from another series (Like Del Toro's cabinet of curiosities) and put them here.

Mazey Day was plain bad, boring, pointless. But I actually enjoyed Demon 79. Even though it's a fantasy episode it's very entertaining, solid story, I loved how it ended, performances were great, Anjana Vasan (Needa) and Paapa Essiedu (Gaap) have a lot of chemistry together, it was a fun and enjoyable episode.

Still, I don't know if I want these kind of episodes in this series, I want to see Black Mirror, not this, not fantasy episodes. This is not why I watch Black Mirror.

Maybe... why don't they just create a new series?

Black Mirror: Mazey Day (2023)
Season 6, Episode 4

What? A fantasy episode? This isn't Black Mirror.
16 June 2023
First of all, this episode is about paparazzi. They're already not the most likable people on earth, so it's hard to empathize, care, or even have some interest in the main character.

It vaguely explores the morals of being a paparazzi, influencing or even destroying people's lives, etc...

And all of a sudden... out of practically nowhere it becomes a fantasy episode? Unrealistic twist, nothing to do with Black Mirror really. Black Mirror is sci-fi, it mostly explores technology and its consequences. But this is not sci-fi, this is fantasy, it makes no sense, it comes out of nowhere and there isn't a hint that in that particular world that particular "fantasy element" even exists. It doesn't even have a moral to the story really, unless you look a lot into the paparazzi side maybe, and even then there's not much to analyze.

If they really wanted to talk about the paparazzi, it could have been done WAAAAAY better (maybe even with a gadget that lets paparazzi enter private homes or invading limits they're not supposed to invade or something) But this episode completely misses the mark.

We don't deserve Salma Hayek
16 June 2023
She's too much for this world, let's be serious here. The episode was amazing, but I think she steals the show, she's so funny and graceful, and her character as herself is so entertaining and whoever wrote her lines nailed it completely.

All performances were great, Annie Murphy is superb too, of course, and she has a lot of chemistry with Salma. I also laughed a lot with Michael Cera's cameo, though he's just there for exposition he's the right kind of funny for that role.

About the episode, funny, entertaining, cynical, scary at times (I'm gonna start reading Terms and Conditions), it's an amazing start for this new season.

Solid Thriller, it leaves you thinking.
3 June 2023
So it's like most crime dramas, you know, there's a killer, false lead, false lead, then true lead, true lead until they catch him.

The first part was like that, like most crime movies. But I liked the second part, I'm not going to spoil anything, but the characters and their motivations felt real, felt like it could happen to anyone in this day and age. It left me thinking about a lot of stuff, it left me with a bitter taste in my mouth, a bit sad about what happened and overall the killer's story, which is more sad than violent.

Overall I really enjoyed it, it's a slow burner but it pays off. I recommend it.

Dumbest time traveller ever.
13 May 2023
First of all, the story makes no much sense. A drug takes you back in time for 7 minutes. I mean, it's super soft sci-fi. Also why is he the first to notice? Why isn't this like news around the world, that they found a drug that makes you time travel, I mean, everything makes no sense.

The main protagonist is black... in a time travel movie. I mean, that's not a good idea from the start and we all know why. But even if you are going to time travel, at least bring some clothes, a kevlar vest, a gun or a knife or a taser or something to defend yourself.

The acting is disastrous. I don't know if Anthony Mackie is actually a bad actor (I've only seen him in the avengers movies) or is it the script that's so bad he can do nothing about it.

The script is super cringe, a lot of unnecessary drama and long dialog scenes that go nowhere, a lot of cringe lines "The present is a micracle", and a lot of made up stories "remember that time when..." and none of those anecdotes really end up meaning something.

It's bad, slow, boring, non-sensical, poorly acted, poorly written, I don't know, if you skip this one you won't miss anything.

The movie I wish I had when I was a kid.
14 April 2023
First of all: This is A MOVIE FOR KIDS, it's not for grown ups, don't be a 30-something or 40-something years old and expect to see the best movie of your lifetime. It's not gonna happen, it's a kids movie.

When I was a kid I saw the old Hopkins-Leguizamo movie... OMG, it was horrible. I get it, we didn't have CGI back then, but an animated movie like this one would have been amazing. Waaaay better than that... garbage of a film.

This new one explores all the common elements of the franchise, beautifully crafted world with attention to details. My 7 year old girl LOVED IT. I was kinda bored, but she loved it, this rating is for her, that's what's important, it's a movie for kids, they should rate it.

There are a lot of man-childs on the internet criticizing it. Don't listen to them. If you have a kid who loves Mario just take them, no doubt about it. If you're a nostalgic grown up, you're not going to have a bad time, but it's not what you expect, there are like 1 or 2 "grown up jokes", that's it, it's not like those disney movies that have a lot of hints for grown ups, this one doesn't, it's a KIDS MOVIE as it should be.

I get that grown ups need to be entertained, but it shouldn't be the rule, the most important thing is that kids love it.

A lot of hate for this movie, but I actually enjoyed it.
11 August 2022
Sure, it's not perfect, and you need to overlook a few flaws, but it's a great action movie, all centered about hunters and preys (sometimes a bit too much and on the nose) and it has basically the same formula as the first movie. Plays really safe, not much new, but overall is a good movie. You really root for the main character (Naru) and her dog, it has a few references/easter eggs from the other movies and it really fits the canon as a prequel.

Ok, I don't want to be harsh, because it's independent, but...
27 June 2022
First of all, almost all episodes are inconclusive, and that was the point, to raise funds to develop them, and that's ok. It has some good stuff in it, Firebase is really good, I wish I could see the ending of that. Same with Rakka. There are some good ideas. Zygote and Gdansk are interesting.

For me all the "funny" episodes failed completely, I guess that's not my kind of humor. AT ALL. It's too repetitive and sometimes naive/pointless. For instance, the cooking show, I saw the first two gizmos, and I think I skipped the last ones to the next episode, they were all too obvious and repetitive and not really funny, just parodying something won't make it automatically hilarious. Same with the president one, too far fetch (though extravagant presidents exist of course, like that crazy Thailand dude), Kapture and God, they made no sense and they were too obvious at the same time. And again, for me, they're not even funny to justify them.

There are some things that didn't make sense, like why are people in Kapture filming for VHS? I guess it's just for the "feeling" of a shaky cam/low quality video? Makes no sense when they're using drones, and mind control they don't have a decent camera? Also, if you want to make humor episodes, you need to hire a good comedy writer. There's a lot to learn from Love, Death & Robots about how to make comedy shorts.

Again, I don't want to be harsh, the "serious" chapters had something redeemable about them, but the funny ones are plain bad.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I hate Leia.
8 June 2022
Leia is so annoying, they're trying to portray her as this smart kid, but she's freaking stupid, risking everyone's lives, being a spoiled annoying kid who can't follow a single basic rule.

Also, she can outrun THREE bounty hunters. Worst. Bounty. Hunters. Ever.

I hope this gets better over time, so far this series is a complete disappointment.

Yes, more of this please!
18 May 2022
I've read and respect other reviews calling it "try-hard" and "boring". I guess it's not everyone's cup of tea. But for me it is. It's "Seven (1995)" but staring Batman. I love that kind of dark police/detective thriller theme to it and I really enjoyed it.

Yes... it is a little too long, but it doesn't have unnecessary scenes. Everything moves the plot or the characters forward.

It actually feels like a good start, I'm hoping to get the second part with The Joker and with higher stakes.

My little girl was bored (even more than I was) and we're from south america.
6 February 2022
The characters have charisma, I give your that. The setting is great, and the animation, well, it's Disney, so it's top shelf. Songs are... ok I guess (all completely forgettable though, except for "we don't talk about Bruno", but some nice tunes here and there).

However, the story is not interesting, the songs are more like "musical exposition" trying to put you up to date with the movie explaining the characters. The first song is exactly that "this character does this, this character does that, this one has this magical power, those are the Madrigals!". Show, don't tell. Same with Bruno's song, "this happened between bruno and me. Bruno predicted this for me. Bruno ruined my wedding by doing this... etc..."

SHOW, DON'T TELL.

Compare it with Frozen or Moana. Things actually happened in the movie, and then they took a break and sang a song about what happened, how they felt at that moment, where they needed to go, what they needed to do. The songs were not full exposition trying to explain the movie or the characters to you, those songs were memorable because they had HEART, they were not just part of the script cut out and turned into lyrics. It was a pause in the movie to separate parts of the story, to make you stop and think about everything that happened and set up the next part of the movie.

The excuse for the magic was the laziest writing I've ever seen. It was a dark time and all of a sudden a magic thingy appeared and from then on... magic. It wasn't even like "we were walking through an enchanted forest" or "a good witch casted a spell for us"... nope. OUT OF NOWHERE and FOR NO REASON this magic thing that NOBODY EVEN KNOWS WHAT IT IS appeared and protected them forever. It feels like it was written by some film student instead of, you know, big Disney top of the line movie writers. This is Disney, it's not a small studio, I expect A LITTLE bit more.

The conflict was internal, it was mostly "family issues", they need to solve something and it got solved. It wasn't a real threat (like Moana's world ending conflict), or interesting enough (like Elsa's internal conflict) to feel invested in what was happening, it was something that needed to be changed. And the fact that they made it into a profecy made it even more uninteresting because you knew it will eventually happen so... everything up to that moment felt like the writers were stalling.

I'm not saying it's bad for everyone, I'm seeing good reviews from people that enjoyed it, good for them, I just saw an empty story with interesting and charismatic characters that could have had so much potential and fell short on almost every aspect.

If I go full "conspiracy theorist" I'd say that for this movie the story didn't matter and they went full on merchandise mode, creating the most distinct and interesting characters just to sell toys. They didn't care to craft a well written story, some basic vague conflict and weak story to string all together was enough.

I hope your kids enjoy it more than mine did. After all, that's the only thing that matters.

Fun, but why are we teaching kids that cats are evil/mean?
10 October 2021
Yes, I know it's a puppies movie. We took our little girl to see it, and she had a lot of fun, but it bothered me a little that the bad guy had cats for minions. What's with that? To be fair I don't watch the show more than a few glances over my shoulder while she's watching so I don't know if the bad guy is a recurrent character, but why cats? Why not a pet snake or something that kids should really fear, or better, why not making him hate all animals alike. For moments it felt like "Cats & Dogs (2001)" all over again, dogs are the loved heroes and cats are the evil bad guys. Like a literal a-hole of a cat pushing a coffee mug off a desk just because. We have both dogs and cats at home, so I don't understand that "cats are mean creatures" message.

Asides from that, the movie is fun for kids, I didn't find much for adults, not even a few subtle jokes between the lines, but all kids seemed to enjoy it.

It has A LOT of flaws, but I actually enjoyed it.
26 September 2021
Let's begin by what's entertaining. The main villain/monster/evil idea is actually pretty cool (though the execution is really goofy and laughable at moments). But the main issue with this movie is that they put this villain in a generic horror B movie full of tropes, like they copy/pasted the script from any generic slasher and they replaced the "monster".

The direction is fine I guess, a lot of good camera shots, but it doesn't make up for the rest of the movie.

So what's wrong about the movie? Everything else.

-Generic B horror movie plot, from beginning to end, it's all 100% predictable by the book.

-Generic hollow characters that are only remembered by who they are (the protagonist, the sister, the mother, the detective, etc...) they have no depth at all. There's also ONE character that's only there stablish that "the male detective is hot", that's her only reason for being in the movie (yes, THAT's the level of character development in this movie).

-Generic detectives always one step behind and not calling for backup.

-Generic trope of abandoned hospital person that goes alone to investigate the past and finds detailed files and footage about everything.

-The mother character is completely useless, she's only there for exposition.

-In this case when it's CGI most of the time it looks "decent", but when it's practical effects, it's goofy, cringe and laughable.

-Gore somehow well executed, but it's not scary, it's just gory.

-Generic obvious resolution of the movie.

-The very last line of the movie... man, get a writer ASAP.

It's not THAT bad if you want to watch a generic B movie with "something different" of a monster, I don't regret watching it, it was fun somehow, but I can't overlook all these flaws.

Why was it cancelled??
8 July 2021
Yes, Jupiter's legacy is not perfect, it has a few flaws, but overall is a pretty decent series and really entertaining, the narrative with flashbacks was really well done, it keeps you interested in knowing "what happened?" between the past and the current time.

It has it flaws, of course, a little too much exposition sometimes, and of course as any superhero movie/series it makes no sense at times, but I really enjoyed it and I see crappy superhero projects getting a lot of seasons while this one didn't.

I don't know what happened, but I want my season 2.

It's not perfect, but it's definitely worth to watch. I really liked it, it's really tense, very creepy, a couple of good jumpscares and some scenes are very well done. Though it lacks some explanation on a few things. Also some elements could have been exploited a little more. But it's still a really entertaining scary movie.

Overall I had a great time.

I was hoping for a little more but I'm satisfied. It's a pretty decent psicological horror movie, really engaging, you really feel what the protagonists are going through, I won't spoil it but there are a couple of really smart plot twists and it shows you part of the crude and cruel reality of refugees. I'd say watch it, don't expect a masterpiece but a really enjoyable psicological horror movie.

Amazing documentary work.
17 October 2020
Of course I'm going to speak about the direction and editing, because the case itself is heart-breaking, I think I shed some tears (I'm a 38 year old male) since I have a 5 y.o. daughter and there are some things I can't believe the human being can be capable of, I'm out of words.

But the editing is amazing, luckily they have the police footage and the documentary is really well organized. So the work here is 10/10, congrats to the director and all the crew that put this together, amazing work.

Entertaining but disappointing.
28 September 2020
It's not a bad movie, it's... acceptable, but I think it's a little too pretentious for what it actually has to offer. It starts really slow, then it gets interesting, but by the middle of the movie you kinda know what's going on and the final "twist" is super obvious, cliché (I can think of at least 10 movies with the same "plot twist" or "revelation") and you see it coming from a mile away. It has a good and interesting 2nd act, but the 1rst is boring and the 3rd is obvious. I expected more but now I'm just disapponted.

Disappointed, but I appreciate the effort.
8 April 2020
I like when small filmmakers take risks, and in this movie they definitely took some risks. Unfortunately this is not cosmic horror as some people classify this movie to be (If you want a good cosmic horror movie done lately, watch "The Void (2016)") the fact that there is an "entity" and a cult doesn't automatically make it cosmic horror.

Trying not to spoil the movie, the story itself doesn't really give you much to think either once you understand how the "mechanic" of what's happening works. And the mechanic itself doesn't give you a meaningful message or something, it's just what's happening, so it didn't feel deep or that it was going somewhere or let me wonder about higher powers (like The Void did) since what's happening is confined to that camp/area in the desert. It felt more like witchcraft than cosmic horror.

This movie didn't connect with me, I see some people giving 9/10 or 10/10, which is fine, but I like filmmakers taking risks outside what's commercial, so I'd watch more films from these guys even if this one failed to connect with me.

Decent
7 April 2020
This movie is not perfect, it's not a comercial movie, it's low budget, but it nails a lot of things right. You have to be in the mood for a slow burner, the sense of dread is there, the mistery is there, and for being a low budget film they did a great job, I enjoyed it.

I'm not sure the payoff for all that mistery was enough though (no spoilers) you sort of expect a little more for enduring the whole film, so the ending was a 5/10, but overall the movie was entertaining for me.

It's not for everyone, and you have to be in the mood for a slow burner.
