Supergirl: Magical Thinking (2021)
Mostly amazing, with some terrible thrown in
To sum up: amazing scenes with the core characters & Nyxly, but inserting William into the fold this late in the game felt very out of place and forced.
There was so many amazing scenes between the core characters, and it was nice to see some dynamics strengthen like Lena and Nia's. They did well to include some light hearted and comedy moments whilst still grounding it in serious battles. Every single Dansen scene had me yelling, no spoilers but I LOVED THEM.
Peta did an amazing job at Nyxly this episode, her character gets some hilarious scenes and though I don't care much for her as a villain I am loving the actress.
Katie and Melissa once again knocked their scenes as Lena and Kara out of the park, I am loving their journey this season and seeing their dynamic as the two key people able to fight the big bad.
The bad... I missed Jesse as Brainy this episode, it seems each week one actor has to be missing likely for covid restrictions and it does feel like an empty space.
And William. I understand what they were trying to do with him and this storyline, but it just feels so forced. When we have so little time left to wrap up the core characters storylines I'd rather the time and focus be spent on them, instead of building up other characters. I didn't enjoy him telling several women how to do their jobs/roles over the course of the episode, but at least they are finally writing him consistently.
Supergirl: The Gauntlet (2021)
Hilarious AND Meaningful!
I must admit when I saw the promo last week and heard about how 'funny' this episode would be, I expected the worst, it looked like a chaotic mess.
But, this was actually one of the best episodes of the season in my opinion! They did give some funny light hearted character moments, that really did make me laugh, but they also gave us a lot of raw, character driven moments too!
It was nice to see Dansen interacting as the solid couple they are, both at home and in the field, and it was also great to have Lena back interacting with everyone. I feel like having at last one character missing over the last couple episodes really did leave it feeling incomplete, but finally all the main characters are back and working as a proper team.
Supergirl: Blind Spots (2021)
Powerful, the true meaning of what Supergirl should be.
This episode displays the potential Supergirl has always had as a show. It has the potential to tackle real issues whilst including character back stories, and displaying real moments between characters. So much of the history of these characters have been ignored lately, including the fact that Kelly was even in the Army. Azie was able to beautifully include so many references to things we know about our favourite characters, showing us that they do still matter.
I have never been so blown away by the writing of this show, it was so raw and powerful, so moving. It was so important to have characters like Kara admit that they WANT to be helping, they want to do what they think is best for everyone, but that sometimes they are going to have blind spots and miss things, because like Kelly said: your experiences are different, you won't always get it. Showing that white guilt isn't enough, showing that its not an active emotion, that these issues can not be fixed with one right moment, one conversation, it was all so amazing.
So perfectly done. I'm excited to see what Azie writes next!
