Gore Good. The rest .... BAD.
25 September 2009
To make a long story short, here are my points to make things clearer.

1. bad acting

2. more bad acting

3. doesn't make a difference in 3D

4.Plot and storyline is utter bulls**t

5. a 10 year old kid could make this movie...

6. potential contender for the worst movie of all time....

While i'm giving this movie a 6 out of 10 ratings, mostly because i praised for the perfectly coordinated death scenes, which in 1 word, Spectacular.... and oh, also for the awesome soundtrack in the opening scene. So, what do Hollywood have say for themselves huh? 6 out of 10 ratings.

It should have surpass Vol.1. Why was it lower?
28 July 2009
Though it was originally filmed as a single movie, Vol.2 somehow almost distant itself from Vol.1 completely. In a way, it doesn't disappoint, it surpass them. Strangely, I don't understand why this volume was rated lower then the first one. Vol.2 contain all that is missing in the first one. Character development and a better driven plot.

The Bride has taken care of the her first two ex-partners. Now is up to her to finish off the remaining members before she can get to Bill. Throughout this journey, she has to learn the new ways of the Chinese Martial Arts, escaping from being buried alive, destroying a trailer and most obviously, tracking down her man responsible for the death of her loved one. Also, her unborn daughter.

The action, the style and the content sticks to it pretty much similar to the first picture. A high praise still. Tarantino added in more characterization in to the characters. Especially The Bride and Bill himself. The late David Carradine, did an amazing job at being that character. We did not see much of how capable he was in the previous release. In this chapter, audience will get a taste out of David for his calmed and twisted martial arts expert Bill. So buckle up people, for one last ride. As The Bride will go through all of hell to Kill Bill.

Ultraviolent Masterpiece !
28 July 2009
Since the day I started watching Tarantino films, by god! He never lets you lose focus of the story. He wants you to pay attention to what's happening on screen. Non-stop pounding, sword dicing action that only here to please you one thing for you viewing pleasure.... The Art Of Action! Kill Bill Vol.1 contains a simple but yet very complex tale of revenge themed movie that sets out what it sets out to do. To Kill Bill. And yes. Violence everywhere. Guts spilling off. Limbs flying god knows where. Swords swooping. A** kicking on every scene. Every shot, every scene are executed extremely well. Incredibly stylized visuals and camera movements that honors every influence that Tarantino watched when he was learning how to do films on his own. I mean not just taking stuff from the West but from East as well. Marrying together to make a well crafted action film though with slightly depth in the story telling and plot.

Uma Thurman eventually did an amazing job playing the character of the no nonsense ex-assassin on a mission bloody violence and revenge for the one he loved the most. The other rest of the cast also did very well in their performance. Lucy liu should be credited too. Angela Basset was really convincing in this role as both a mother and a assassin which to me spells as a no brainer but delightfully it did balanced well. While not much to say about this part of Kill Bill, there are a few scenes where the movie reveals some details and backgrounds of some the characters. Though I've said there's not much we can talk about in this part. Its more action driven and a feast for the visuals. All I can give you based on what I felt, revenge is best served cold fellow audience!

Sell Out! (2008)
8/10
A smart genre-bending comedy that pokes fun at society in Malaysia and probably as well as Asia. Yet still, it has flaws.....
14 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
What is the word for it? Hmm. AMAZING. All I can sum up is amazing. A creative, out of the norm comedy film that is fresh and absolutely smart on every level. Sell Out! can be describe as more of a genre- bending no proper specification of a comedy movie that works really well with the issues that are shown in the movie. Truly a remarkable Asian/Malaysian film one really really needs to sit and enjoy it all the way.

The movie revolves around Rafflesia Pong who is, well, a bitch-like TV host who has no regards whatsoever for people. Selfless and incredibly rude. She is trying to get a name for herself in a place she works called FONY (a parodied version of SONY I bet.) Tired of the lame job she was working as and the deterioration in her show's popularity, she tried putting up a new idea for a show that allows her to compete with her arch rival who seems to be grabbing more praise from the audiences then with Rafflesia. Aside from that, Eric, who's an aspiring project manager is getting the beating of his life while working at FONY too. He tries to give out the idea of a machine that can make 10-in-1 kind of soya related material. But his bosses keep preventing him from expanding such ideas for they are afraid that the benefits will go directly to Eric. Both characters are stuck in a situation that pretty much seems to push them down on to their knees and a learning the hard way of life as it is.

Now, first of all, the movie sets aside from all the other cliché parodies that are showing in cinemas worldwide. Sell Out! directly parodies our country's society and by God if u were to spend a whole life in Malaysia you'll understand what the director is trying to tell to audience. Poking fun on every action and behaviors that our people make Literally, it's still quite understandable to people from other countries too. On the other hand, obsession with reality TV shows that many people loves to watch in today's ever growing modern society were also shown. Another noteworthy is the parody of art house films from Malaysia which was notorious for its really slow paced shots and scenes that doesn't make sense to anyone. I guess it reflects the alternative cinema that Malaysian filmmakers are trying point out in their films. But in such a manner, their films sometime contains no meaning and going as far to say 'creating the definition of "nothing" ' in their films. One unusual mix in this movie is the music in this film. Catchy and tuneful, the musical moments help to bring up the scenes together with a breath of life to it. Lyrics reflects the tone for a situation but most of all the characters thoughts and feelings which I find it surprisingly fitted well with the thematic nature of the film. Praise for the acting must really go to all of the cast. Not one did a horrible job at all and great authenticity from the main actor and actress.

Okay. The flaws. Well Im not surprised. Not everything is perfect in life. Well I wanted to say I was a little a disappointed by the comedic timing of some the scenes there in the movie. Some scenes didn't very work well with the lines because it felt not engaging enough. And although I really enjoy some of the dialog, I couldn't feel any connection with some of the sarcasm they were telling to me. Films like this remind me a lot of the Hot Fuzz and Shaun of The Dead movies for parodying seriousness of movies which I find that it didn't suit my taste. So I guess its a matter of liking which style of parody it is.

Anyways, do not let down by my negative criticism I put in this review. Its still a well made comedy that is for sure to bring down the house. A loud applause for Yeo Joon Han. One of the better Malaysian works since Sepet. Can I call it a Masterpiece? Well that's up to you to decide. So...

Malaysia Memang Boleh my friends!
29 April 2009
Before this movie came along, I never really like Malaysian films. Most of them are very stiff, boring, lousy and horrible. Rarely there's any really good films from this country has to offer. Then of course you have the old P.Ramlee movies which is still quite a hit with Malaysian audience of young and old. But seriously, I never bother to watch Malaysian films. Then came this movie Sepet which I saw on a cable channel on one Hari Raya back in 2006. I heard it was an indie produced movie. A rarity for our country. So i go check it out. Soon as I watch the opening, I literally stick through the whole movie without leaving my sit.(Laugh)What really makes this movie works is the formula that dear Yasmin was using. Not your typical Malay movie one watches in cinema. Bad acting, lack of character development, stupid lines, illogical scenes and whole lot of AWFULNESS painted all over those movies. This one tends to stray away all those elements. It was really the first proper piece of Malaysian Cinema.

Sepet tells a simple story yet a complicated relationship between a young Malay girl and Chinese VCD seller. Both with different religious and life backgrounds. What Kak Yasmin was trying to show is that love is a wonderful thing in the world. But there's still issues among us when it comes to love. And that is race and religion. Especially here in Malaysia when it comes to religion. There's still a divide between non-Muslims and Muslims. Such issues like banning certain foods. Touching, cuddling and kisses are not allowed. This eventually made others feeling divide over such matter. The themes are strongly show here in Sepet. Is not about religion as a factor. Its about finding out your true love regardless of what religious background he/she is from and spend the rest of his/her life with them.

In terms of story telling and its plot. Its kind of moving. And also funny. If one was a Malaysian, you'll surely laugh harder with those comical scenes.I love most of the character in there. The movie is also rich with Malaysian culture as it portrays accurately of everyday Malaysian citizen of what they're like. Everything from their accent, their culture, their mannerism and their thinking. How that we are also rich in music coming from different countries. At this point, I wouldn't even call this movie a Malay movie but a Malaysian movie. The only weak point that i gave this movie is probably the use of static camera. It works greatly with some scenes. But some scenes with this method didn't make it engaging enough. Yasmin could've use more closeup shots.

Right after this movie, I began to open up to Malaysian films. To my surprise i found there are movies that are as good as Sepet. With the rise in a new wave of Malaysian film directors, the future for Malaysian Cinema is bright. Sepet I save to say, should be an influential film for newbies in the industry as it shows the prowess of true Malaysian Cinema. It'll give them inspiration to push further for our growing film industry

Red Cliff II (2009)
8/10
A superb sequel that is still as good as its predecessor.....
29 April 2009
I guess i do not need to explain this part in detail. Part I has already explain much of the style and depiction of the movie. And all i could tell you is that its great. Part II starts where the 1st one left off. The 1st defeat of Cao Cao's army didn't make the PM any less confident as he is about to commence his second army to take the charge. The Navy. He's determine that he will take down Red Cliff like an iron fist. Meanwhile, Zhou Yu and company are finding ways to cripple the large naval fleet that Cao Cao has already settle in opposite side of their fort.

With characters already introduced in the 1st part, the movie didn't seem to lose the magic as it keeps surprise audience in it's story. This part starts off with the latter half focusing entirely on character development. The final half goes in for the battle. Just like part I, the battle scene still packs a huge punch at your guts with many brilliantly choreographed movements and kinetic action. The ending ends up in a very fair manner but that's up to you to decide.

Anyways, it's still as good as the 1st part. One of the best film adaptation from novels. Many should know it's basically the same thing because it was shot back to back. So what really determines how good is part 2, you'll have to watch part 1 first.

8.8 out of 10 rating.

Red Cliff (2008)
9/10
I hope when this movie comes out to the West, I expect it to be at top 250 list, This is PERFECT!
29 April 2009
Its been years since I last watched a great Chinese movie. Growing up in Malaysia, watching many Chinese movies, the one I most fond of was Wong Kar Wai, Tsui Hark, Stanley Tong, Jackie Chan and of course the masterful John Woo. In his movies, the elements he combined made his movie very unique and distinctive from any other Chinese films i've watched. His use of kinetic shots and slow motion gave a fresh look, if not, reinvented the action genre while Hollywood was still producing plain and boring action movies.

After nearly 18 years, John returns to Chinese cinema, with a big present install for all of us. And that is Red Cliff. Beautifully shot, big on scale, action-plenty, great performances and a smart adaptation of the historical epic, The Three kingdom makes this movie one of the best Chinese epics in decades.(with the exception of Hero) True to his style. After his last three films, i began to think whether John's losing his edge already or is it because the Hollywood system that was in the way. In this case, I choose to think the Hollywood system was the cause of it. Red Cliff shows he still have the similar trademark he use in his films. The only difference is that this movie is huge in scale.

The themes he use; brotherhood, humble and honor are one of the driving formulas which made his classic movies a hit with audience is still very visible here. Visuals are breathtaking as this is one of the greatest visual effect shots I ever seen in an Asian movie. For an Asian like me I'm very proud of that. The cinematic shots were stunning and beautiful. One which John's interpretation is still very sharp. The production behind this movie are mind blowing-ly HUGE. With the amount of extras and props used, makes any filmmaker-wannabe to ask "how did he do that?" I couldn't even imagine all the headache he has gone through for this movie.

Now, in terms of story telling, plot and character development, the elements which i mention up there surprisingly fits together. The pacing for each scene has a mind of its own. For action it goes into overdrive. Cleverly building in the battle and action, the scenes were outstanding. It almost has a classic hong kong action feel to it where every action seems to be very unpredictable. The dramatic scenes and character development fits like a shoe, as the acting boost up all the character's emotions. Whether its seriousness, ego, humor, sad or depressed all the characters has it. So, to my surprise I still can't get over the fact that John can still balance both action and drama together like he always did in his films. Two thumbs up for that. The plot came in quite well in timing. With no hesitation except for the small intro, it goes straight into the battle scenes first before any dramatic scenes take place. Slowly it builds up, from the inroduction of characters each revealing themselves in detail, to the forming of strategies to stop the invasion and ends in with an amazing climatic battle scene.

All in all, Red Cliff is one of the best movies in 2008 that I've seen. I'm gonna review Part II later. So to end this review. I gave it A MUST HAVE for people.

Very Satisfying ending , better than part II.
10 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Well, what can I say . Its a damn good film. You have everything that you hope for in this movie. Humor, romance, action-adventure, epic battles , dramas and emotions. All smack into 1 film . Especially when it is a final chapter. The 1st film i was blown out of the sea. I mean , the performance was so good and funny . Johnny Depp made me laugh so hard while watching him portraying Jack Sparrow. The action was kinda different from other swashbuckling films (unlike the dumb Cutthroat Island movie). Story was good.

When it comes to the 2nd one , it was good at first . But the more i watch it , the more i found out it wasn't all that good. They are a lot of plots that are unnecessary. Like the fight between Jack, Will and Norrington should've shorten it. Including the scene when Kraken was eating the ship where Will was on.

This 3rd one . I could agree more. It is much of a redemption chapter. The film got everything that I have expected. The humor and the big and final battle at the end . I heard people said that the plot was to complex for them to follow. Come on, I'm 16 and i can even follow through the plot. I found the third to be very similar to star wars return of the jedi. But thats OK. Anyway, the scene i hate the most is the Davy Jone's Locker. It didn't surprise me at all. It was not as funny as i predicted. When Jack meets up with Barbossa he act as if he is not so surprise. But after from there, the chemistry between Jack and Barbossa started to take form. They were so funny. They are like the ultimate odd-couple in fantasy movies.

The climatic was the height of the film. All the characters clash in one big battle. It was a cool scene. The fight is like nothing I have ever seen before in cinema. They really pull of a spectacular sequence for 2007. Overall it was a satisfying final chapter. My hopes is that they don't try to make part 4 cause the story is about pirates. It ends here. All I'm waiting for is a Jack Sparrow spin off.

An OK installment ....
21 December 2006
When I first watched this film in theaters, I was very excited cause I was gonna watch Star Wars! I was surprise with this chapter. I was only nine . So as I was all grown up , I've notice that there were many problems with this chapter of Star Wars and I was disappointed.

First of all , the acting . I felt most of the actors here have stiff and wooden acting. They were at times both mature and childish particularly with jake's acting . George could've choose someone else to play the part of Anakin. Another bad acting comes from Natalie Portman. Her performance as Padme was very , very stiff . I mean it almost look as if she has no interest in the movie and just go there do her job without commitment or whatsoever. But throughout the prequel trilogy her performance have improved. The only actors I found amusing was Ewan Mcgregor,Samuel L. JAckson and Liam Neeson. They were very easygoing with this film .

Second, its the story . I found that the story George made wasn't quite exciting as the original trilogy . I didn't say it was bad but just OK.It could've been better. There were things that I didn't like in the plot. What the hell is with the midichlorian thing? It has already been explained that life exist because of the Force and not because of midichlorians. And why does the universe felt slickier than the original trilogy? The things that I liked about this film is the visual effects, the action and the podracing scenes. The visual effects are a big applause in this movie . It looked so real and so breathtaking. The lightsaber choreograph was awesome. They use elements from real Chinese martial arts skills that made it look more faster than the original trilogy. I especially love the duel between Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon and Darth Mual. I thought the podracing scenes were exilirating. Its even better than real life race . :p So overall this film seems to be an OK film. Its among the lowest of the Star Wars film rankings.

Improvement over the first chapter....
21 December 2006
This chapter seems to be an improvement over Phantom Menace. The story was interesting but the story of Anakin being in love with Padme was a no-no. The excitement in this film was not as good as The Phantom Menace. They were many slow paced scenes particularly with the Anakin-Padme scenes . They were boring and stupid . The chemistry was very bad because both performances were awful. The romance has lack of passion. George should use more romantic elements in it both emotionally and passionately. When I thought Jake Llyod's acting was poor , I was hoping Hayden could do a better job but he was just as worst as him. While Natalie Portman's wooden acting is still there except improved . The battle on Geonosis was the greatest field battle since Episode V . Last for not least, the climatic duel between Yoda and Dooku was the most that surprised me . I finally get to see Yoda in action for the first time .

Overall this movie was good but still a little bad but still cannot compare to the original trilogy. #5 in my ranking of the Star Wars movies. 7.5/10

An awesome ending....
29 November 2006
Well I know most people think that part 3 is the least favourite of the trilogy. But i liked it. It's better thn part 1 but not as good as part 2.The plot is very smart and complex. I don't think any writers in HK can pull off something like that. Its so complex and so messy but at the end it ends up to be a brilliant script. I think the directors did a great job. This film should've deserve an award for best screenplay in both HK Film Awards and The Golden Horse Award. The other cast did a great job too. Especially Leon Lai. His sinister character just give me the chills and I really hate him. He too should've deserve an award for best supporting actor.

Awesome ......
29 November 2006
Let me just say one thing about this movie : AWESOME !!! I mean I cant get this movie out of my head. It's just so damn good. I've never seen such a great Bond Film since From Russia With Love. Daniel Craig really did a great job. He surpassed Sean Connery and even Pierce Brosnan. At first I thought the only thing that's gonna blow me away in this movie is the action sequences. NO . I was so wrong . Im more glue to the character than the action. I mean whats not to like about Bond . This time James Bond is more SMARTASS than ever . He got that macho thing that many people liked to see.

Smart screenplay, with many memorable scenes, good plot but not too good and of course the action sequences. Characters are very interesting.

8.5/10 Recommended for all Bond fans.
