Not bad, as long as you're watching with an Adam Sandler fan
31 October 2020
Lazy and unambitious comedy, just like the others. Thankfully though in this one, you get some semblance of a structure/groundwork, a passable storyline and at least two to three laughs.

You'll enjoy the 103 mins if you yourself are, or happen to be watching with, a fan of this slapstick, SNL crowd and their collective genre of easy humour (and it happens to be a locked-in Halloween afternoon).

None of the subtlety or richness of the original

Huge budget, and they still manage to dramatically fail at 'good cinema'; this film is a perfect example. All the beautiful aesthetics in the world couldn't save a bad script, obvious dialogue and terrible direction. The 4 is simply for the fact that I didn't want to tear my eyes out, thanks to the casting and scenery.

Skip this, and please opt for the shouldn't-have-been-touched-by-Netflix classic!

Painfully mediocre second-half brings its downfall
9 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Everything is very enjoyable until you are presented with the rubbish 'antagonist' of the story, who is given as much character development as his unnamed, forgettable army of 'evil comrades'.

That's when the mystical world the makers tried to build all comes crashing down. Everything, from the over-graphicised setting to Mordo's descent, starts to actually feel artificial and forced.

The only thing that's stays consistently good in the whole film is the Cloak (which has more of a personality than the villain, Kaecilius).

Finally, something new!

Fantastic Tamil movie after so long!

Well-executed action thriller that follows a great script, moves at a fast pace, keeps us guessing and actually develops characters enough to make us care (the latter being where most films in this genre fails).

Cast, director & namely the editor have done a great job. Can't wait for the sequel!

Clever & gripping for those who 'get it'
4 May 2020
Watched it with my techie husband who usually isn't impressed with the masses of South Asian films - he loved it! As did I.

The script keeps you guessing 'til the end and all the plot lines are technically well-researched and a treat to watch.

I have noticed a trend that the people calling it dull, are mostly people who fall into the category of those that didn't understand the nuances and plausibility of the writing. They got bored with the same intricate details that gripped others.

P.S. GVM is wonderful in this!

Fan service first half, underwhelming second half
12 January 2020
The movie starts off with plenty of exciting scenes for Rajini fans. The plot seems promising, the characters seem interesting and the story seems worth watching...

But then it ALL comes crashing down in the nonsensical second half: a disappointing villain, illogical sequences and a bordering-on-stupid script ending with a dull climax.

Pros: Rajini, father-daughter sentiment, Yogi Babu. Cons: Unintelligent direction, amateurish dialogue, boring climax.

Huge disappointment
17 October 2018
It's like the makers wanted to kill the most exciting new franchise Hollywood was blessed with in recent years. I adored the first film. As a kid who grew up on the streets of London, it was a wonderful thing to see a familiar culture entwined into a brilliant script and film on the big screen.

I can't lie and say I wasn't excited for the sequel, and maybe that didn't help, but man this film was bad. Tediously long, boring and full of characters you either never care about, or sadly as a result of the most unexciting storylines in this film, no longer do.

Step outside your comfort zone.

The film itself focuses on an issue never before explored so closely. The topic of Tamil gangs in the UK has often been blanket-approached by the media, leaving most of the population clueless about its substance.

The director has used raw cinematic talent to pull the audience into this world with an attractive plot and storyline. There are twists, a need to focus midst a warmly familiar setting.

The casting, and screenplay has been cleverly structured to make the audience believe in the story. Not in the mood for a brainless Hollywood 'fun-fest'? Watch The Gangs of Tooting Broadway for a refreshing experience in the dark streets of London.

Expect a little, and appreciate a fresh topic.
